Rutgers Football 2023 Season Preview

Photo Cred: Rutgers Athletics

It has been a busy offseason for the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (RU) football team. They’ve had critical losses to the NFL Draft but also got huge additions via recruiting and the transfer portal. These additions will bolster the team’s defense and improve the offense, particularly in the passing game. The Greg Schiano 2.0 era looks to take the next step this year, as Rutgers looks for its first six-win season since 2014 and first bowl berth since 2021. That was when they were able to go to the Gator Bowl, despite finishing with five wins. Last year, the Scarlet Knights went 4-8, however. With strong recruiting and a favorable start to the 2023 schedule, the team will look to return to a bowl with six or more wins.

Let’s Meet the Players!

OC and QB updates

After firing former offensive coordinator Sean Gleeson midseason, Rutgers had Nunzio Campanile serve as the interim OC to finish the 2022 season. Head coach Greg Schiano hired Kirk Ciarrocca this offseason from Minnesota to be the Scarlet Knights’ next OC. Ciarrocca has worked for many college football teams in the past. This includes previous Big Ten experiences as offensive coordinator at RU, Penn State, and Minnesota. Veteran quarterback Noah Vedral exhausted his eligibility after a sixth college football season and will not be back with the team next season. Although inconsistent, Vedral won Big Ten football games with the Scarlet Knights and brought stability to the quarterback position. He served as a mentor to backup quarterback Evan Simon, who made several starts this season due to Vedral’s injury.

Simon struggled at times but helped the team win some games in non-conference play as well as playing in several Big Ten games. He returns to back up projected starting quarterback Gavin Wimsatt. Wimsatt came to Rutgers during his senior year of high school, where he played in a few games during the 2021 season while maintaining his redshirt. During the 2022 season, he saw some action in the early part of the season before suffering an injury against Temple.

Wimsatt then took over as starting quarterback for the Minnesota game and played out the slate in the starting role. This allowed him to gain experience against some of the best teams in the conference. He looks to take the next step this year with an improved offensive line, several new wide receivers, and a strong running back room. There will be a return of multiple starters, including former four-star recruit RB Samuel Brown V.

Now, Onto the O-Line

On the offensive line, Rutgers loses one of their top offensive lineman (J.D. DiRenzo) to the NFL. He had a great season last year, as he was named team offensive MVP after transferring in from Sacred Heart. Schiano hired Pat Flaherty to coach the offensive line. He’s a long-time NFL o-line coach who won two Super Bowls with the New York Giants. Ireland Brown is expected to start at center, with Mike Ciaffoni at left guard, Curtis Dunlap Jr. at right guard, Hollin Pierce at left tackle, and Tyler Needham at right tackle.

All five offensive lineman return from last year and bring size and experience to the position, in addition to very capable backups at all five spots. They look to protect Wimsatt from opposing defenders, give him more time to throw, and open up holes for the running backs to get through. This will greatly improve Wimsatt’s play and help the offense score points to keep up with other high-powered Big Ten offenses.

Take a Look at the Pass-Catchers!

Greg Schiano also brings back former offensive coordinator Dave Brock as the current wide receivers coach. The Scarlet Knights lost some of their top wideouts from this past season, with Sean Ryan, Shameen Jones, and Aron Cruickshank all graduating. All three have been selected by NFL teams as undrafted free agents as well. RU does bring in a lot of talent in the receiving game regardless. Former Division II All-American wide receiver JaQuae Jackson looks to be a big playmaker for the Scarlet Knights, as does former FCS All-American wideout Naseim Brantley. While both receivers are making the jump to the Big Ten level, they have played at an extremely high level in their respective programs. Jackson and Brantley were highly coveted by many other Power Five programs.

Rutgers also brings in tight end transfer Shawn Bowman out of Maine, also in the FCS. Bowman ranked as a top-45 tight end nationally and brings size, coming in at 6-5 and 263 pounds. The Scarlet Knights also return swiss-army knife tight end Johnny Langan. He’s played everything from quarterback to wide receiver and running back but is primarily a bigger, pass-catching tight end. Other names to look out for in the receiving game are veteran receivers Chris Long, Isaiah Washington, and Christian Dremel. All three played supporting roles last season and are now the team’s more experienced receivers. Max Patterson scored two touchdowns in the spring game and looks to see more playing time this season, as well as RB/WR Rashad Rochelle. Rochelle contributed in big games last season when his number was called as a true freshman and will look to build on that in his sophomore season.

Rounding Out the Offense With the RBs

One of the biggest strengths of the Rutgers offense last year was the running game. The Scarlet Knights return quite a few capable options to pick up yards on the ground. Samuel Brown V looks to pick up where he left off last season and is the most talented back on the roster. He had 28 rushes for 101 yards and a touchdown the game before he got sidelined. Brown V has definitely shown the potential to be the lead running back for next season. Veteran running back Aaron Young also returns for his senior season. After missing many games with injuries last season, he is expected to have a big role as well.

Kyle Monangai carried the load for the Scarlet Knights at running back later on in the season when Samuel Brown V was sidelined with a season-ending injury. Monangai had a standout game against Michigan State, taking 24 carries for 162 yards. On top of all of that, RU has Al-Shadee Salaam in more of a reserve role. That being said, he is a shifty back who can make defenders miss and had some long runs last season. One of his most important runs included his 22-yard touchdown that helped give Rutgers a season-opening win over Boston College.

Starting the Defense off With the D-Line

Rutgers retained defensive coordinator Joe Harasmyiak, who was previously the DC at Minnesota and the head coach of Maine. On the defensive side of the ball, the Scarlet Knights ranked in the top 10 nationally in various categories early last season. This was a large part of the reason that the team hung around in big games and won several others. On the defensive line, DT Ifeanyi Maijeh graduated and was signed by the Seattle Seahawks after the NFL Draft.

However, RU returns many starters, including some who missed time with injuries, and also adds new pieces to their defense. Aaron Lewis, who ranked as the second-highest defensive tackle behind former Alabama star (and current Houston Texan) Will Anderson Jr., will start at left defensive end. He will pair with Wesley Bailey at right defensive end. Isaiah Iton, a transfer from Ole Miss, is projected to start at left defensive tackle, with Kyonte Hamilton at right defensive tackle.

Now, It’s the Linebackers’ Turn

Returning starters Deion Jennings and Tyreem Powell will start at the linebacker positions. They will be joined by Mohamed Toure, who will be returning after missing last season with a torn ACL. The same is true for Moses Walker, who could see some playing time at linebacker along with other veterans such as Mayan Ahanotu and Jamier Wright-Collins. The D-line and linebacker groups look to build on a strong 2022 season, where they lived in their opponents’ backfields and put pressure on opposing quarterbacks. They will be backed up by a tough Rutgers secondary, which will be the last line of defense for the Scarlet Knights.

The Last Line of Defense: DBs

RU will lose three key defensive backs: cornerback Christian Braswell (drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars) and safeties Avery Young and Christian Izien (signed by NFL teams as UDFAs). The three players had their share of interceptions and forced incompletions. More importantly, they limited opposing pass catchers and kept them out of the end zone on big gains. Two of the top Scarlet Knight DBs, cornerback Max Melton and Robert Longerbeam, do return this year. Other notable defensive backs returning are Kessawn Abraham and Desmond Igbinosun, who looks to start at free safety.

Rutgers gets safety Michael “Flip” Dixon in the transfer portal from Minnesota, and he projects to start at strong safety with both Izien and Young having left the team. Cornerback Eric Rogers joins the Scarlet Knights’ defensive back corps after transferring from Northern Illinois and looks to see playing time as well with Braswell having been drafted. The defense looks to build on their success from last season and will be helped by an improved offense and a strong special teams unit.

Last, but Not the Least, the Special Teams

Star punter Adam Korsak, who now plays for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the Canadian Football League, will be deeply missed. He finished his college days as the NCAA leader in career punts, net punting yards, and career punting yards. Korsak will be replaced by fellow Australian and ProKick Australia punter Flynn Appleby. In the kicking game, Jude McAtamney returns after a strong season last year. He will be backed up by former five-star recruit Jai Patel among other kickers on the roster. Aron Cruickshank was also used as a punt and kick returner, as was Joshua Youngblood. Unfortunately, Youngblood left in the transfer portal to play at Delaware next season. It remains unclear who will return punts and kicks next season, but there are some notable options. The list includes wide receiver and running back Rashad Rochelle, running back Aaron Young, and wide receiver Chris Long.

Overall Outlook of This Team

This season will be focused on Gavin Wimsatt and his development. He will have everything he needs to put up better numbers and put the team in a position to win more games. A better offensive line, an improved wide receiver and tight end room with several transfers, and a deep running back room will surely make that happen! The defense loses some key players but brings back many others both in the defensive line and secondary. Several transfers, as well as players returning from injury, will just add to the depth and quality. The special teams unit will be missing star punter Adam Korsak but returns kicker Jude McAtamney. What remains to be seen is how many wins this roster will attain, but my prediction is they will win six games to qualify for a bowl game.

The Scarlet Knights’ 2023 Schedule

As I said before, the schedule looks favorable to start the year, so I expect Rutgers to capitalize against teams in the non-conference and early part of the season. They should knock off Northwestern, Temple, and Virginia Tech at home to start the season 3-0 again. A tough game at Michigan (the defending Big Ten champion) is followed by a lower-division opponent in Wagner, so the Scarlet Knights should end up 4-1. They will likely fall to Wisconsin to end the first half of the season at 4-2.

I predict that Rutgers wins two important Big Ten contests against rivals Michigan State and Indiana to then clinch bowl eligibility at 6-2. Michigan State had lost their starting quarterback and one of their top receivers in the transfer portal, and RU looks to make it three straight wins against the struggling Indiana Hoosiers. After this, the schedule gets much tougher, as they take on perennial Big Ten and national contenders Ohio State. This will follow tough road games against Iowa and Penn State before the Scarlet Knights face Maryland. This team has dominated Rutgers for the last couple of years and has taken major strides forward.

I expect Rutgers to lose all four of these games, as Wimsatt and the RU offense would have to be on another level to even compete with Maryland and Iowa, let alone Penn State and Ohio State. If Rutgers can start the season strong, they will still be able to clinch a bowl game. They could then face a similarly-talented team and have a chance to win that game to have a winning season at 7-6.

Get Ready for the 2023 Season!

It’s a good time to be a Scarlet Knights fan, as Greg Schiano looks to once again return Rutgers football to relevancy in the Big Ten. Recruiting has looked great for both this season and the next, and the roster looks to be in good shape to win some games this year. Kickoff against Northwestern, which will be a Sunday afternoon game on CBS, is less than 50 days away! Tune in to Rutgers football this season and keep chopping!

Analyzing Offseason Moves of NFL Contenders: San Francisco 49ers

Photo Cred: ClutchPoints

The San Francisco 49ers started the 2022 NFL season on a disappointing note. The team was 3-4, coming off a loss to the eventual champion Kansas City Chiefs. They had just traded a mountain of picks to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for star RB Christian McCaffrey. Then, their luck turned a corner, as the team ended the season on a 10-game winning streak to finish 13-4. They were the 2nd seed in the NFC playoffs, with a stout defense and a healthy McCaffrey making their collection of playmakers genuinely electric.

Despite season-ending injuries in Weeks 1 and 13 to both QBs Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo, Mr. Irrelevant QB Brock Purdy came in and looked electric himself. Purdy steered the ship to the NFC Championship game, where the QB injury curse again took its toll. Purdy went down in the first quarter against the one-seeded Philadelphia Eagles, leaving fourth-string QB Josh Johnson to take on the NFC’s best team… and they were stifled, 31-7.

DeMeco Ryans, Steve Wilks, and QBs

The 49ers entered the 2023 offseason needing to answer questions at critical positions. To start, they had to replace DC DeMeco Ryans, a tremendous defensive mind who will now become head coach of the Houston Texans. Former Carolina Panthers’ 2022 interim head coach, Steve Wilks, comes in to take his spot on the coaching staff. The injuries the Niners faced throughout the season at the QB position gave them all the excuses for losing the NFC Championship two years in a row. How can you win without a real quarterback?

Jimmy Garoppolo’s time with the team ends, as he heads off to the Las Vegas Raiders on a three-year, $67.5 million contract. Former Panthers QB Sam Darnold comes in as a new backup, a disappointing high draft pick who will become the next reclamation project for Head Coach Kyle Shanahan. They will head into the 2023 season with an open competition between Trey Lance and Brock Purdy to be their starting QB, assuming both are healthy. Most seem to be rooting for the fan-favorite Purdy at this point, despite the team having traded three first-round picks to move up for Lance in the 2021 NFL Draft. Fans will hope whoever gets the job can stay healthy throughout the year.

SF’s D-Line Additions & Subtractions

San Francisco kicked off the 2023 free-agency period with a bang, signing Philadelphia Eagles DT Javon Hargrave to a four-year, $84 million deal. The team prides itself on having an overwhelming D-line, and Hargrave will be that third high-paid piece next to DT/DE Arik Armstead and DE Nick Bosa. The only question with the Hargrave move is that he signed the same contract that DT DeForest Buckner signed with the Indianapolis Colts. The same Buckner who they traded away back in 2020 for a first-round pick…

After using that pick on what looks to be a bust in DT Javon Kinlaw, the team realized their mistake and paid up to get another dominant player on the D-line. Despite the addition of Hargrave, the team will lose some key pieces on that defensive line, with rotational edge rushers Samson Ebukam (Indianapolis) and Charles Omenihu (Kansas City) heading off to new horizons. They will be banking on a year-two leap from 2022 second-round pick, DE Drake Jackson, to replace the pair’s production.

How Will the O-Line Fare?

With so many star players, the Niners were going to inevitably lose many vital pieces along the way. Their O-line took a significant hit this offseason, losing starting G Daniel Brunskill and starting RT Mike McGlinchey. Brunskill signed a two-year, $5.5 million contract with the Tennessee Titans, while McGlinchey signed a massive five-year, $87.5 million contract with the Denver Broncos. The team surprisingly spent no significant draft capital along the O-line, instead choosing to rely on 2022 fourth-round pick, G Spencer Burford, and 2020 fifth-round pick, OT Colton McKivitz, to take their starting spots. The offensive line will undoubtedly be their largest question mark heading into 2023.

The State of the DBs

San Fran will also face some large turnovers on the back seven of their dominant defense. FS Jimmie Ward follows Ryans to Houston, signing a two-year, $13 million contract with the team. Their decision to let Ward walk may become questionable, but they will hope to replace him with an impactful rookie year from third-rounder, S Ji’Ayir Brown. CB Emmanuel Mosely will also need to be replaced, as he headed north to the Detroit Lions on a one-year, $6 million deal. Former Atlanta Falcons CB Isaiah Oliver will help them do so, signing with the team for two years, $6.75 million.

The LBs and Kicker

The 49ers will be hoping that their star linebacker duo (Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw) can remain healthy throughout the year, as third linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair signed a one-year $5 million deal with the Tennessee Titans. Lastly, long-time kicker Robbie Gould remains a free agent, unlikely to return after the team spent a third-round pick on his replacement (Jake Moody).

To Conclude…

The 49ers once again should dominate a weak NFC conference en route to the playoffs, where they will be looking to dethrone last year’s champions, the Eagles. Their D-line has become even more dominant, and their playmakers remain elite. The three main questions holding them back will be their health, QB, and OL. They must stay relatively healthy, their young replacements must prove to be as good as they expect, and they must make the right choice at quarterback. If they do, this team showed last year that they can beat anybody.

How will Jordan Poole fit in Washington?

Photo Cred: Marca.com

Jordan Poole was recently traded for Chris Paul and is now a member of the Washington Wizards. He will be playing alongside Kyle Kuzma. It will be an exciting young duo to watch this season. The main reason for the Warriors trading Poole is his relationship with Draymond Green. Their relationship hasn’t been the same since Green punched Poole at the start of last season. Poole is also getting paid huge money, and the Warriors wanted to get off his salary to sign Green to an extension. This trade will give Poole a fresh start and allow him to be more ball dominant and in charge more on the offensive side of the ball.

There is no secret that Poole is gifted offensively. We’ve seen the past few seasons he’s constantly put up 20+ points. Poole will now, along with Kuzma, be able to dominate the ball offensively. He won’t have to differ from anyone as he did with Steph Curry and Klay Thompson. He will be free to play stress-free basketball. His confidence should rise to where it was when they won a championship.

He can fully tap into his offensive skill set. Poole increased his scoring every season with the Golden State Warriors. He averaged over 20 points per game last year, and I fully expect that number to rise again this season with the Wizards. Poole can make the all-star team in the future, especially being in the Eastern Conference, where it may be slightly easier for him to be an all-star Poole will be striving for revenge to show everyone who he is as a basketball player.

Wizards: Jordan Poole sidesteps Draymond Green punch question after trade

Poole is also very quick on his feet and has super lateral movement. The guard has the potential to be a solid defender. Poole’s hard work this offseason will define his greatness. He can either be upset by the trade or overcome the drama. As a player, you would rather play for the Warriors than the Wizards.

Washington Wizards: A great chance for a fresh start for Jordan Poole

Photo Cred: Wiz of Awes

However, he is now in Washington, he has his money, and all that’s left is to fulfill his potential. The Wizards will allow Poole to take the next step. There is also no pressure to win in Washington like in Golden State. Poole should be able to play stress-free ball. This will be an extreme confidence boost for him and Kuzma, who are both under contract for the next few seasons. Who knows, maybe the duo can become one of the better ones in the entire association.

Cristiano Ronaldo Chooses Saudi Arabia Over MLS

Photo Cred: CNN

Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the greatest players ever to grace the game. His career spans over two decades. The Portuguese superstar has broken numerous records to claim his place as the G.O.A.T. With over 800 career goals and counting, Ronaldo is one of the most lethal marksmen in soccer. He is the all-time record international goal scorer with 118 strikes and boasts of being the all-time leading scorer in the UEFA Champions League (140).

Cristiano Ronaldo has embraced the competitive challenge offered by Saudi Arabia’s football scene over the allure of Major League Soccer (MLS) in the United States. After a recent friendly loss with his team, Al-Nassr addressed the media, expressing his firm decision not to return to Europe, where he starred at clubs like Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus. Despite the buzz surrounding Lionel Messi’s move to the MLS, Ronaldo believes that Saudi Arabia offers a more intense and competitive football environment.

When asked whether a move to the MLS could be on the cards, Ronaldo said, “No because in Arabia, the competition is much better than in the United States. I want to play in Arabia.”

The 38-year-old forward made a lucrative move to Al-Nassr in December, reportedly earning a staggering $200 million per year. Since his arrival, other notable footballers, such as Karim Benzema and N’Golo Kante, have also signed deals with the Middle Eastern league, further enhancing its reputation on the global stage. Ronaldo reflected on his storied career, voicing his concerns about the declining quality of football in Europe.

He said, “I am 38 and a half, and it’s not worth it because my view of football is that in Europe, it’s lost a lot of quality. The only league in the world for me that has quality, that is a level superior to the others is the Premier League. I think the Spanish league does not have great quality, the Portuguese league is good, but not a superior league in my opinion. The German league also I believe has lost a lot. So, I can say that I won’t be returning to Europe.”

While his decision to leave the highly competitive European football scene might surprise some, Ronaldo firmly believes that the Saudi Pro League offers him the ideal platform to continue his illustrious career. Embracing new challenges and opportunities, he hopes to impact the footballing world while playing in Arabia.

WNBA Power Rankings

Photo Cred: USA Today

We’re officially at the midway point of the WNBA season, and the All-Star festivities have wrapped up. Sabrina Ionescu lit the three-point contest on fire, and Jewell Loyd took home All-Star MVP honors, but now it’s time to focus on the playoff push and separate the contenders from the pretenders. The Las Vegas Aces and their star-studded lineup have separated themselves from the pack, but the middle is very murky. Who can challenge them? Who should be looking ahead to the loaded 2024 Draft?

Tier 1: The Aces

  1. Las Vegas Aces (19-2)

WNBA DRAFT '22: Las Vegas Aces Acquire No. 8 and 13 picks

Photo Cred: KTNV

It’s no secret that the Aces are head and shoulders above every other team in the WNBA, and it’s hard to see that changing. Their All-Star starting lineup, led by defending MVP and Finals MVP A’ja Wilson, is unstoppable when they are clicking, and the defensive tandem of Wilson and Candace Parker inside is a handful to deal with. Guard Jackie Young has taken a leap this year and has become one of the elite guards in the league alongside Kelsey Plum and Chelsea Gray.

The work that the Aces have done on the fringes, however, is what puts them over the top. The signing of Alysha Clark gives them another versatile guard off the bench, and Kiah Stokes gives them frontcourt depth. Add in the genius of head coach Becky Hammon and the championship experience they gained last year. It’s hard to see anyone knocking them off of this spot.

Tier 2: The Contenders

2. New York Liberty (14-4)

Liberty is the new “superteam” on the block this year after the additions of Breanna Stewart, Jonquel Jones, and Courtney Vandersloot, but haven’t quite been able to match the Aces’ level yet. Stewart is the MVP favorite, Sabrina Ionescu is shooting the lights out, and Benitjah Laney is filling in the gaps and defending like her hair is on fire.

New York’s talent is undeniable, but they’re still figuring out how the pieces fit together, and their backcourt defense is an issue. Marine Johannes has been struggling mightily off the bench, and Jones has struggled to fit in. But if they put it all together? Watch out.

3. Connecticut Sun (15-5)

Connecticut Sun News - WNBA | FOX Sports

Photo Cred: Fox Sports

Brionna Jones’ injury has thrown a wrench into things for the Sun, and her loss means they can’t match the top two teams’ body-for-body anymore. But when they get good guard play, they can still be dangerous. The do-it-all force is Alyssa Thomas, and she’s driving them, serving as a constant triple-double threat who is also arguably the best defender in the league. DeWanna Bonner provides the swag that they need to compete. Tiffany Hayes and Natisha Heideman have been solid in the backcourt. If they’re making shots from the perimeter, they will be a tough out for anyone.

4. Washington Mystics (11-8)

The Mystics get the benefit of the doubt for their drop in the standings due to injury issues. They remain in the contender tier for now. The defense is still good (tied for first in opponent points per game, first in FG% defense, and second in forcing turnovers), and the talent is there to make it work on the other end. Elena Delle Donne is still one of the best offensive players in the league when she’s healthy, and Ariel Atkins has started to heat up from the outside after a cold start to the season. Throw in the versatility of Brittany Sykes and Shakira Austin and the experience of Natasha Cloud, and you have a dangerous team.

Tier 3: The Playoff Push

5. Dallas Wings (11-9)

Dallas Wings Basketball - Wings News, Scores, Stats, Rumors & More | ESPN

Photo Cred: ESPN

The Wings have holes, but their star power is undeniable. Arike Ogunbowale and Satou Sabally can get buckets with anyone, and Natasha Howard is quietly filling it up and dominating the glass alongside them. The combination of Howard and Teaira McCowan dominates the boards (first in rebound margin) and makes the Wings a nightmare for opposing frontcourts. The defense needs to get better, and the bench will be a problem late in the year, but the Wings have the kind of firepower that can get hot and scare some people higher on this list.

6. Atlanta Dream (11-8)

They may fly under the radar, but the Dream has three All-Stars. Rhyne Howard has continued to emerge as a future star in her second season, and Allisha Gray has leveled up in her first season in Atlanta. Cheyenne Parker is having a career year, and the Dream is firmly in the playoff mix. The roster thins out significantly after that, however, and Aari McDonald’s injury issues have exposed the guard room. Is Atlanta ready to compete with the big girls? No. But adding playoff experience to this core will toughen them up for the future.

7. Los Angeles Sparks (7-13)

Los Angeles Sparks - Sports Illustrated

Photo Cred: SI

The Sparks have surrounded Nneka Ogwumike with a solid core; that has talent at all positions and good depth for a team with a losing record. Part of that comes back to the health of their rotation. Lexie Brown has missed a lot of time with an illness. With her returning healthy and paired with Jordin Canada in the backcourt, it should help the Sparks thrive. Chiney Ogwumike and Azura Stevens both are hurt. Getting them back gives LA the depth they need to get into the playoffs.

8. Chicago Sky (8-12)

The year is a lost season in Chicago. It would have been unfair to expect more after the loss of Candace Parker, Courtney Vandersloot, and Azura Stevens in free agency. But does any top seed want to deal with the backcourt of Kahleah Copper and Marina Mabrey in the first-round? They’re much too thin in the front court, but Copper and Mabrey provide an explosive combination of bucket-getting, driving, and playmaking.

9. Minnesota Lynx (9-11)

MINNESOTA LYNX

Photo Cred: ESPN

After playing only four games in 2022, Napheesa Collier has blossomed into one of the best players in the W this season. The roster around her is extremely thin, and any playoff push for the Lynx this year would be a bonus. Diamond Miller has shown she can be a foundational piece in her rookie year, so this year is already a win in Minnesota.

Tier 4: Caitlin Clark Watch

10. Indiana Fever (5-15)

2023 was always going to be an uphill battle for the Fever after a dismal 5-31 record in 2022. They have shown flashes and been much more competitive this year, but the young core is still trying to learn how to win. The good news is that Aaliyah Boston already looks like a superstar, earning All-Star honors as a rookie. Kelsey Mitchell is still one of the more solid lead guards in the W, and Nalyssa Smith has leveled up in her second year. Overall, this is still one of the most talented young cores in the league.

11. Phoenix Mercury (4-15)

Phoenix Mercury Logo PNG vector in SVG, PDF, AI, CDR format

Photo Cred: Logowik

There’s no way around it; 2023 has been a major disappointment in Phoenix. Former head coach Vanessa Nygaard was fired 12 games in. The Mercury have remained at the bottom of the standings since. Brittany Griner hasn’t missed a beat since coming back, and Diana Taurasi has a throwback game every once in a while. But there isn’t much to cheer for in Phoenix outside of that.

12. Seattle Storm (4-16)

The Storm is predictably in the basement after losing Breanna Stewart to free agency and Sue Bird to retirement. Watching Jewell Loyd get buckets has been fun, and Ezi Magbegor has been assessing the limits of her game. The Storm doesn’t have the talent to compete right now. They will be in a good position for the loaded 2024 draft.

James will be going into his seventh season with the Lakers next year and hunting to win another ring before he walks away from the game. LeBron turns 39 later this year in December, so the clock is ticking for the Lakers and LeBron. Can the Lakers win another championship while LeBron is still there? The answer is yes.

The Lakers have had a great offseason so far. They retained guys they traded for at the trade deadline in D’Angelo Russel, Rui Hachimura, and re-signing Austin Reaves. Reaves showed tremendous upside potential in their playoff run all the way to the Western Conference finals. Reaves, only 25 years old, will be entering his prime over the next few seasons, and having him under contract is a big win for the Los Angeles Lakers.

He signed a four-year $56 million contract with the Lakers this off-season. It’s a win for both sides and will keep Reaves with the Lakers for at least the next four years. The Lakers had one of the best records in the league after the trade deadline last year, going 17-9. This brought them back into the play-in tournament, where they beat the Minnesota Timberwolves and a spot in the playoffs. A huge reason for the post-trade deadline success was the guys they traded for. Russel and Hachimura played massive roles. When starting Russell, they had an immediate impact. Retaining these guys are critical aspects of their quest for another championship.

Through free agency, the Lakers added former Miami Heat guard Gabe Vincent, who has playoff experience and is a capable three-point shooter, which is what the Lakers need. The Lakers also added forward Tauren Prince, guard Cam Reddish, and center Jaxson Hayes. Prince is a good wing who can stretch the floor and give you length at the defensive end. Cam Reddish is an exceptionally talented young prospect who has only been in the league a few seasons but has shown the ability to put the ball in the basket. Hayes is a big body who is extremely athletic and will be great in the pick-and-roll scenario. The additions have highly improved the Laker’s roster.

The key is still LeBron James and Anthony Davis. The health of Anthony Davis is always a question mark, but he can stay healthy; this Lakers team can be dangerous. I still expect LeBron to average 20+ points next season but look for him to play more in the post and less running around on the perimeter to conserve his energy for the latter half of the season. The Nuggets should still be the favorite to come out of the West next season. They did sweep the Lakers, it was a close sweep.

Most games came down to the wire and could have gone either way. The bottom line is the Lakers got better this offseason, and the Nuggets got worse. With the loss of Bruce Brown, Thomas Bryant, and Jeff Green, the Nuggets turn to their younger guys to step up. LeBron James and Anthony Davis are still fully capable of leading this Lakers team to a championship next year. LeBron’s playoff record speaks for itself. With this new and improved roster, I fully expect the Lakers to be in the championship mix next season.

Five Bold Predictions for this NFL Season

Photo Cred: PFF
  1. Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets finish in last place in the AFC East.

Aaron Rodgers left the Green Bay Packers after 18 seasons for the New York Jets

The biggest off-season story by far was Aaron Rodgers’ retirement saga. It became evident when the New York Jets hired Nathaniel Hackett as their new offensive coordinator. While Rodgers is one heck of an upgrade from Zach Wilson, last season Rodgers proved his better days are way behind him. Rodgers will turn 40 this season, and the Jets offensive line is underwhelming. The AFC East this season is poised to be possibly the best division in the NFL with the upstart Miami Dolphins, the juggernaut in the Buffalo Bills, and Bill Belichick’s New England Patriots very well could be some hard times in New York for Rodgers and company.

  1. The Washington Commanders make the postseason.

Commanders not 'all-in' on Sam Howell as starting quarterback?

It could be Ron Rivera’s final season as an NFL Head Coach. He’s putting his faith in a former top draft prospect in Sam Howell. Once regarded as a 1st round pick, he became a 5th round draft pick. Sam Howell played in 1 game last season and did enough to win the job. Washington brought in Eric Bieniemy to help run the offense should spice things up. Washington’s defense under performed in 2022. That should change with Chase Young’s rookie contract coming up. Hopefully, it lights a spark, and Washington’s D Line becomes the monster it’s supposed to be.

In a weird NFC East with teams like the Eagles who are currently riding the coat tail of a QB, many thought before last season was in question if he was the guy in Jalen Hurts. Now he’s one of the highest-paid QBs. The NFC East is always the wildest division. I think Washington shocks a lot of people and gets into the postseason.

  1. Baker Mayfield leads the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the postseason and a playoff win.

Photo Cred: USA Today

It wasn’t that long ago when Baker Mayfield was the absolute man in Cleveland, putting his team in a position to play in the AFC Championship game to being run out of the city. Baker now finds himself at the helm of another franchise. This time he has to fill the shoes of a seven time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady. If one thing is for sure, exceptions are pretty low. The Buccaneers aren’t expected to be a great team this season. One of Mayfields best qualities has always been the chip on his shoulder.

A player that is never afraid to speak his mind and competes at the highest level. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are still a team with talent on offense and defense. They play in the absolute weakest division in football. This could be a possible rebirth of Baker Mayfield’s career if he could lead the Buccaneers to a division title and a playoff victory this postseason.

  1. The Denver Broncos make it to the AFC Championship.

Russell Wilson...

Last offseason, when the Broncos signed Russell Wilson, the Broncos went from the worst team on paper to everyone’s second pick in the AFC after the Bills to make it to the Super Bowl. The Broncos were one of the biggest disappointments of the season. The offense was in complete disarray until they fired Nathaniel Hackett. The Broncos made former Baltimore Ravens Special Teams coordinator Jerry Rosburg interim head coach. The Broncos offense went from being a complete joke to going toe to toe with the Kansas City Chiefs and beating the LA Chargers. With the hiring of Sean Payton, the Broncos offensive production should excel, and with a stout defense, the Broncos in 2023 are the second-best team in the AFC.

  1. The Kansas City Chiefs become the first team since the 2004-2005 New England Patriots to win back-to-back championships.

Every time I’m ready to count out the Chiefs, they always surprise me. The Chiefs endured losses this off-season, but it doesn’t feel it will affect them much. They have the best player in football, they have the best coach in football, and this season they are the best team. No team has won back-to-back super bowls since Tom Brady and Bill Belichick did that with the Patriots in Super Bowl 39. This year I believe Reid and Mahomes will get it done.

How Does Chris Paul fit with the Golden State Warriors

Photo Cred: Twitter

The Warriors recently traded Jordan Poole, Ryan Hollins, a protected 2030 first-round pick, and a 2027 second-round pick to the Wizards in exchange for Chris Paul. The Warriors unload Poole’s contract that kicks in at the start of this coming season and get a future Hall of Fame point guard in Chris Paul. Paul is past his prime but is still a good game manager and mid-range shooter. It will be interesting to see how the fast-paced Warriors offense fits with Chris Paul’s methodical pace of play. It was clear the Warriors were prioritizing re-signing Draymond Green over keeping Poole.

Will Chris Paul End Up Not Playing For The Warriors Next Season After All?

Since Green punched Poole in the pre-season, their relationship hasn’t been the same. It was clear to everyone within that organization and in the NBA that if the Warriors wanted to get back to championship contention, the odds of them keeping both Poole and Green were low. Green’s fit and close relationship with Steph Curry is one you can’t match, and which played a large part in when newly appointed general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr traded Poole. This trade gives Poole a fresh start in a rebuilding situation with the Washington Wizards. Poole will be one of the primary scoring options. He’ll have the ability to be completely free on offense. Poole can fully display his entire skillset, which in turn could potentially lead to an all-star bid soon. Paul is a dynamic pick-and-roll player with Draymond Green and Kevon Looney.

Paul’s passing ability will also benefit Curry and Thompson. It will allow Curry to play more off the ball where he is most dangerous. Chris Paul will also add more leadership to the Warriors locker room and can help mentor young players such as Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody. The Warriors are looking to take advantage of Steph Curry still playing at an extremely prominent level, and adding a guy like Chris Paul made the most sense for this Warriors team. Not only do the Warriors get a high-IQ player, but it also takes Paul off the free-agent market. Let’s not forget that if the Wizards couldn’t find a trade for Paul, they would’ve waived him. The Warriors trading for Paul takes him away from teams that would have loved to have Paul’s services, such as the Lakers, Clippers, and Kings, will challenge Golden State in the Western Conference.

I expect the Warriors to make a deep playoff run next season and compete for another championship. I also wouldn’t rule out the potential for another trade at some point before next season’s trade deadline. This trade also gives the Warriors cap flexibility because they must decide on Klay Thompson. All signs point to them wanting to extend Klay when his contract expires, and getting Poole’s max contract off their books helps. It is clear after this trade that the Warriors want to keep their core of Curry, Thompson, and Green around for the near future.

The Biggest Winners and Losers of NBA Free Agency Part 2

Photo Cred: The Ringer

Winners:

Los Angeles Lakers

This list of winners starts no differently than any other. The Lakers hit a slam dunk during the 2023 free-agency period. The Lakers prepared for free agency by releasing C Mo Bamba and G Malik Beasley. These two players are underrated losses for the team, but the cap space they cleared by doing so justifies the moves. They used that cap space to retain all their core free agents, including F Rui Hachimura, G Austin Reaves, and G D’Angelo Russell.

The team did more than bring back their players, adding significant depth that they lacked post-Westbrook trade. PG Gabe Vincent from the Miami Heat provides a much-needed shooting upgrade to Dennis Schröder in the Lakers guard rotation. Vincent comes off a remarkable postseason run with the Miami Heat, where he averaged 16 ppg in a seven-game conference final. F Taurean Prince was signed for a bargain one-year, $4 million deal, which brings another 3-and-D player into the fold.

This year, the Lakers’ championship aspirations will continue to rely on the health of 38-year-old LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Still, GM Rob Pelinka has done everything he can to re-ensure the pair is surrounded by a championship-caliber roster.

Milwaukee Bucks

The Bucks land on this list due to the large number of players they were fortunate enough to re-sign. The offseason could have torn apart the entire core built around star PF Giannis Antetokounmpo. Thankfully, Milwaukee was able to retain unrestricted free agents SG/SF Khris Middleton and C Brook Lopez. Middleton returned on a three-year, $102 million extension, an expensive contract for someone who was the second-best player on their championship team just two years ago. He will look to bounce back following an injury-riddled 22-23 season. The chances of the Bucks letting Middleton walk always seemed low.

On the other hand, Lopez nearly signed with the Houston Rockets in free agency before ultimately re-signing on a two-year, $48 million contract. The team did lose a couple of notable role players, however, like G Jevon Carter and F Joe Ingles. Carter lands with the Chicago Bulls, while Ingles heads down to Orlando. Milwaukee brought in SG Malik Beasley to help replace them, signing him to a minimum-salary contract after a down year with the Lakers. Beasley has a chance to be the steal of free agency, as he has previously shown his massive upside as a lights-out three-point shooter. He’s precisely the type of player to play alongside Giannis. Overall, the Bucks needed to bring their core players back, which they did, and then some.

Losers:

Denver Nuggets

The reigning champions had what many would consider a disappointing free agency period. The Nuggets were not quite able to retain all their core players. G/F Bruce Brown, their most significant free agent, left to sign a two-year, $45 million contract with the Indiana Pacers. Brown was a key contributor in their postseason run, but his departure always felt likely due to the limited contract Denver could offer. PF Jeff Green, another playoff rotation player, signed a two-year, $16 million contract with the Houston Rockets. The Nuggets brought in F Justin Holiday to help replace the pair, but they undoubtedly lost two of their best defenders.

PG Reggie Jackson was their signature re-signing, now on a two-year, $10.25 million contract. Jackson went to the Nuggets last season after being traded from the LA Clippers and bought out by the Charlotte Hornets. He was disappointing in his time with Denver, barely cracking their playoff rotation. They arguably could’ve spent that money to re-sign Jeff Green or bring in a better replacement for Bruce Brown. C DeAndre Jordan also returned on a minimum-salary deal, but he looks to be nothing more than a locker-room veteran at this point in his career.

Denver also lost their backup C Thomas Bryant, a player they traded for at the deadline last season. The team will need C Zeke Nnaji to step up in the regular season to eat minutes when star C Nikola Jokic is on the bench. The Nuggets should enjoy their first NBA Championship, but there’s no doubt the team got worse heading into next year on paper.

Houston Rockets

The Rockets unsurprisingly make this list after seemingly being the league’s laughingstock following free agency. The team led the NBA in available cap space, using it on their two major signings of PG Fred VanVleet and SG/SF Dillon Brooks. VanVleet, coming over from the Toronto Raptors, becomes one of the highest-paid players in the league after netting $126 million over the next three years. Thankfully for them, the third year of his deal is a team option, meaning he will likely be off the books when their young core needs contract extensions.

VanVleet was an All-Star just two years ago, and his signing undoubtedly makes this team better (even if they overpaid). Brooks, who joins the team after a sign-and-trade with the Memphis Grizzlies, will be on a four-year, $86 million deal worth up to $90 million. Brooks is a controversial player around the league and takes far too many shots, given his shooting ability. While Brooks does improve this team’s defense, he may still be here in three years, eating up far too much cap space. As previously mentioned, they also signed F Jeff Green to a solid contract for a great locker room veteran.

The biggest reason the Rockets land on this list is their failure to sign C Brook Lopez, who returned to the Bucks. The team even traded away young prospects like PG TyTy Washington Jr. and PF/C Usman Garuba to clear up cap space for their third significant free agent signing. The reigning DPOY would’ve been a massive addition to improve the Rockets’ defense but, unfortunately for them, Milwaukee decided to pay up.

Top 5 NFL Contenders for the Upcoming Season

With the NFL season only a few months away, here are my top five contenders to win the Super Bowl.

  1. Kansas City Chiefs

Patrick Mahomes fires back at Ja'Marr Chase with Super Bowl ring jab

Photo Cred: USA Today

The Chiefs have been in the AFC Conference championship game each of the last few seasons and have hosted all those games. Even without all-pro receiver Tyrek Hill, the Chiefs still showed how dynamic their offense can be. It starts at the quarterback position with Patrick Mahomes, then tight end Travis Kelce, on top of that all-pro defensive tackle Chris Jones. I fully expect the Chiefs’ offense to be one of the best in the league and Mahomes to have an MVP-type season. Mahomes is widely considered the best player in the league, and until someone takes him out, I’m rolling with the Chiefs as my number-one team to win it all this season.

  1. Philadelphia Eagles

Jalen Hurts: Quarterback signs record-breaking five-year extension with Philadelphia Eagles; reportedly highest-paid player in NFL history | CNN

Photo Cred: CNN

The Eagles showed tremendous progress last season, making it to the Super Bowl but falling short to the Kansas City Chiefs 38-35. The Eagles have had a great offseason up to this point, most notably adding running back D’andre Swift. The Eagles also had a very promising draft, adding Jalen Carter, Nolin Smith, and Keele Ringo, all of whom attended the University of Georgia. Expect Jordan Davis and Devonte Smith, who are both entering their sophomore year in the NFL, to take a step forward, and expect Jalen Hurts to compete for the MVP trophy. From top to bottom, the Eagles are the deepest team in the entire league, plus the coaching of Nick Sirianni; expect the Eagles to be right back in Super Bowl contention.

  1. Cincinnati Bengals

Joe Burrow tipped off Ja'Marr Chase about Bengals' pick the night before 2021 draft - Cincy Jungle

Photo Cred: Cincy Jungle

It starts with Joe Burrow. Burrow has shown, like Mahomes, that he steps up his play during the playoffs. Burrow is cool, calm, and collected in high-pressure moments, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. I fully expect Burrow and Chase to be one of the best combos in the league. Also look for Tee Higgins to have one of the best seasons of his career. Zac Taylor is also one of the best head coaches in the NFL and one of the youngest coaches who can draw up high-level plays in pressure situations. Ultimately because of Burrow, Chase, and the experience he has, I have the Cincinnati Bengals as my number three team to win the Super Bowl this season.

  1. Buffalo Bills

NFL News: Josh Allen Speaks On Buffalo Bills Wide Receiver's Offseason Attitude

The Bills have experienced a few heartbreaking losses in the past few seasons. They still have Josh Allen. He’s one of the better quarterbacks in the league and has a great coaching staff. The Bills have had significant success in the regular season but are having trouble translating success into playoff success. We will see if they make any more moves before the season starts. I expect a Bills team to play with a sense of urgency and pride this coming season.

  1. San Francisco 49ers

2023 NFL linebacker unit rankings: San Francisco 49ers claim the top spot for second consecutive year | NFL News, Rankings and Statistics | PFF

Photo Cred: PFF

The 49ers were plagued with injuries last season but still had a stellar season. Trey Lance isn’t the answer. The organization was ready to move on from Jimmy Gorropollo. Mr. Irrelevant Brock Purdy stepped in and didn’t lose a single game until the playoffs. The 49ers lost to the Philadelphia Eagles. Purdy got injured at the start of that game and didn’t return, so who knows what would have happened. I fully expect Purdy to be the starting quarterback. The Niners have one of the best defenses in the entire league and some of the most dynamic playmakers. Those include Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, and George Kittle. Combining this with the coaching of Kyle Shanahan, expect the Niners to be in the mix this season.
