There are already several key matchups that stand out for the upcoming NFL season now that the full schedules for every team have been released. One of the biggest games is the first Sunday Night Football matchup of the year between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Commanders. The Eagles became the first NFC East team to win the division in back-to-back seasons last year after no team had repeated as division champions during the previous 20 seasons.

Despite consistent regular-season success and playoff appearances, including two Super Bowl runs and a championship in 2024, the Eagles still find themselves surrounded by controversy. That has become a consistent theme during this era in Philadelphia, as they have arguably had the best roster in the league every season since 2022. The team has now brought in a new offensive coordinator who will be calling plays for the first time after the firing of the much-maligned Kevin Patullo, who took much of the blame for the offense’s disappointing performance last season.
The Eagles have now had a different offensive coordinator in each of the last five seasons. This is a major reason for the year-to-year inconsistency the team has experienced since 2022. Their loaded roster gives them a certain floor, which has been an 11-6 record and a playoff appearance. But for them to reach their ceiling and make another deep postseason run, the coaching staff must also perform at a high level.
That is where much of the controversy surrounding this team comes from each year, as head coach Nick Sirianni’s value, role, and responsibilities remain difficult to define. Sirianni began his tenure calling offensive plays, but struggled enough that he was forced to hand over those duties midway through his first season. Despite that, reports have consistently suggested that every offensive coordinator Philadelphia has hired still operates within Sirianni’s overall offensive philosophy, limiting their ability to fully innovate and create new upside for the offense.

Sirianni has also been involved in multiple sideline confrontations over the years, including shouting matches with star players and exchanges with fans during games, creating additional drama and negative attention around the team. Because of all of this, many believe Sirianni provides little positive value and, at times, may actually hold the team back more than he helps it. At the same time, it is understandable why he has remained employed.
Despite the criticism, Philadelphia continues to win games and reach the playoffs every season. When the Eagles succeed, Sirianni receives credit as the head coach. When they fall short, blame is often shifted toward his coordinators, who are then replaced. However, this could finally be the year where Sirianni is placed under a true microscope and held accountable by the front office if the Eagles fail to meet expectations. The pressure will be there immediately, beginning in Week 1 under the lights on Sunday Night Football against Washington.
