In a game etched into the annals of football history, Hunter achieved an unprecedented feat that no FBS player had managed in the past two decades. He not only excelled on both offense and defense but also left an indelible mark on the sport. Meticulous research by the Colorado coaching staff revealed that Hunter is the first FBS player in the last 20 years to achieve a rare combination of 100-yard receiving and an interception in a single game. This remarkable accomplishment underscores Hunter’s exceptional abilities and capacity to influence different facets of the game.

However, what truly sets Hunter’s performance apart is his remarkable endurance and determination on the field. He was an ironman throughout the game, remaining on the field for 144 snaps. This incredible feat comprised 80 defensive snaps and an additional 64 on offense, obliterating the Colorado University record of 114 snaps in a single game.

Missouri will look to build off of its dominating performance over South Dakota as it hosts Middle Tennessee State (MTSU) on Saturday. The Tigers haven’t won their first two games of the season since 2018. That was when they won 40-13 over Wyoming. Head coach Eliah Drinkwitz and his team will look to change that as they welcome the Blue Raiders.

Series History

The two programs have faced off twice in the past and split the series so far. MTSU won the last matchup in 2016 with a 51-45 victory in Columbia. Former Blue Raiders quarterback Brent Brockstill, who is now MTSU’s QB coach, had a stellar performance with 280 yards and four touchdowns. Drew Lock, who now plays for the Seahawks, put up 281 yards and two touchdowns for the Tigers.

Missouri came out victorious in its first matchup with Middle Tennessee State in an overtime shootout in 2003. QB Brad Smith ran for a three-yard touchdown to lift the Tigers to victory and survive the Blue Raiders’ upset bid.

What to Look Out For: MTSU

The Blue Raiders are looking for their first win of the season after getting blown out by No. 4 Alabama 56-7 last Saturday. Head coach Rick Stockstill’s team was never in the game as they trailed 14-0 after the first quarter and the deficit kept widening from there.

Their offense is led by redshirt sophomore QB Nicholas Vattiato. He finished with 127 yards, a touchdown, and an interception in his 2023 debut against the Crimson Tide. Freshman running back Jekail Middlebrook led MTSU in rushing yards in his first college game. He ran for 32 yards on eight carries and aims to build off of that against Missouri.

The Tigers’ defense will need to watch out for the Blue Raiders’ receiving core. The duo of wide receivers DJ England-Chisolm and sophomore WR Bryce Bailey flashed signs of being dangerous against the Crimson Tide. England-Chisolm caught three passes for 16 yards, and Bailey caught two passes for 10 yards. This included him scoring the lone touchdown for MTSU.

Missouri’s offense will be facing off against a talented MTSU defense on Saturday. Cornerback Teldrick Ross and safety Tra Fluellen were both named to the Jim Thorpe Award watch list before the season. Ross recorded five tackles in the Blue Raiders’ season-opener against Alabama. Fluellen put up four tackles.

Safety Jokobe Thomas and linebacker Jonathan Butler have been the leading tacklers so far for Middle Tennessee State. Thomas recorded eight total tackles against the Crimson Tide, and Butler finished with three. Junior defensive tackle Marley Cook is also a name to watch out for as he was named to the preseason Lombardi Award watch list.

What to Follow: Missouri

After playing both QBs each half against South Dakota, Drinkwitz named junior Brady Cook to be the starter moving forward. He finished with 172 yards and a touchdown last game. Sophomore QB Sam Horn will still be involved and see time on the field despite Cook being QB1.

Senior running back Cody Schrader also got off to an impressive start to the year. He rushed for 148 yards and a touchdown in the Tigers’ 35-10 victory over South Dakota. One thing to keep an eye on is that the senior is 48 yards away from reaching 2,000 career rushing yards. It also includes his time back with Truman State.

The WR duo of Luther Burden III and Mehki Miller got off to a strong start to the season last Thursday. Burden recorded 96 yards and a touchdown in Missouri’s season-opener. Miller caught a touchdown pass and finished with 49 yards.

Defensively, defensive linemen Johnny Walker Jr. and Josh Landry have been leading the way so far after one game. Walker put up six total tackles (four solo) and Landry recorded five total tackles (four solo). Defensive back Ennis Rakestraw Jr. is also off to a good start as he finished the Tigers’ first game with five total tackles (two solo).

DBs Kris Abrams-Draine, Marvin Burks Jr., and Joseph Charleston are each coming into Saturday’s matchup with four total tackles. LBs Chuck Hicks and Ty’Ron Hopper also had four tackles in Missouri’s win over South Dakota.

The Demise of the Pac-12

0
Photo Cred: The Ringer

The Pac-12 Conference was once a powerhouse known for its competitive athletic programs, academic excellence, and a rich history of success. But in recent years, the conference has faced challenges that have led to its demise. Only Washington State and Oregon State remain, as the Pac-12 is dead. Oregon, Washington, UCLA, and USC are moving to the Big 10, while Arizona State, Colorado, Utah, and Arizona are leaving for the Big 12.

Analysis: Conference realignment has mangled the college sports map, but to what benefit? | AP News

Photo Cred: AP News

One of the primary things that plagued the Pac-12 is its financial instability. The conference has lagged its counterparts in terms of television revenue. This disadvantage hampered the conference’s ability to invest in state-of-the-art facilities. The Pac-12 also has struggled to consistently compete for national championships, with teams often being overshadowed by powerhouses like Alabama, Clemson, and Ohio State.

Similarly, in college basketball, Pac-12 teams have had limited success in the NCAA tournament, which further erodes the conference’s national reputation. The Pac-12’s struggles in recruiting have been compounded by its financial limitations, making it difficult to compete for the nation’s top prospects. Outside of the California schools, it’s been difficult for schools to recruit. Recruitment is the lifeblood of any successful college sports program.

Being on the West Coast and out of the spotlight hinders the school’s exposure to millions on the east coast where more people live. Many of the nation’s top high school athletes gravitate towards schools in the SEC and Big 10, where they perceive better opportunities for exposure and success. The Pac-12’s recruiting struggle is compounded by its financial limitations, which make it difficult to compete for the most coveted prospects.

Students are looking to go to pro sports, and education comes second. Education is a point of pride for the conference, but it has also created challenges. Some Pac-12 schools prioritize academics over athletics, which can result in a lack of investment in sports programs. The vast geographic expanse of the conference, from the West Coast to the Mountain region, can lead to travel fatigue and logistical challenges for student-athletes.

In 2024, the Pac-12 will be gone. It hurts even more because Pac-12 football is doing well. With Colorado having Deion Sanders as a coach, the league has the most interest since the USC and Pete Carroll era. The league has won at a high clip so far this season. It’s sad that it’s too little too late for a league that was once the best in the nation.

Facing off against a Big 12 opponent like TCU was a significant test. He passed with 510 yards and four touchdowns; despite being considered the underdogs, they rose to the occasion, thanks in large part to the exceptional play of their quarterback. Sanders, who had been making waves since his arrival at Boulder, demonstrated poise beyond his years throughout the game. He made precise throws, managed the game clock effectively, and exhibited a deep understanding of the sport. His stats were impressive. He was 38/47, being named the Davey O’Brien Quarterback of the Week.

At the post-game press conference, Coach Prime praised Shedeur Sanders for his skills, leadership, and humility off the field. Sanders credited his teammates, coaches, and the Colorado community for their support and for believing in the team’s ability to win such a historic victory. As the college football world buzzes with excitement about this game, it’s clear that Shedeur Sanders has a bright future ahead of him.

Deion Sanders is Changing the Game

The landscape of college football has undergone a significant transformation. This stems from Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rights for student-athletes. This revolutionary change has changed the college football experience for players, fans, and the industry. Deion Sander is using it to his advantage.

Coach Sanders has used NIL as a recruiting tool to attract top talent to Jackson State and Colorado. The promise of guidance and opportunities related to NIL is enticing for high school athletes considering where to play college football. Before NIL, student-athletes faced strict regulations preventing them from profiting from their own names, images, or likenesses. Players couldn’t earn money through endorsements or sponsorships.

Sanders has openly encouraged his players to take advantage of NIL opportunities. He believes athletes should be able to profit from their hard work and talent, and he has used his influence to promote his athletes for NIL deals. Coach Sanders has been using his brand and celebrity status to raise the profile of Jackson State University and now Colorado. His ability to attract top talent to a recently weak football program has garnered national attention and disrupted the traditional power dynamics of college football recruiting.

He encourages his players to build their brands. The coach allows players to have their social media handles on their jerseys during practices. This allows exposure for the individual players and people to follow them on social media. Sanders understands Generation Z athletes. His approach is new but working. It’s all about branding and building.

As Sanders once said, “If you look good, you feel good, If you feel good, you play good, If you play good, they pay good.”

Sanders’s presence on social media generates income for himself and indirectly benefits the university and his athletes through increased visibility. His social media team drops videos. The coach educates his players about NIL opportunities and responsible financial management. He has organized workshops and brought experts in to help players navigate NIL deals and endorsements. This guidance is invaluable.

Sanders’ influence extends beyond the football field. His emphasis on community engagement and philanthropy, such as supporting local businesses and organizing charitable events, fosters a sense of responsibility among his players and contributes to the betterment of the community. His commitment to academic success, football, and life skills sets an example for other college football programs.

Other schools need to take note of the Sander effect. NIL is not only about empowering star players but also about leveling the playing field. It allows can allow smaller programs to gain recognition and financial support. With the power of social media, athletes from all walks of college football can engage with fans and sponsors, offering a more diverse representation of the sport.

Shocker in Durham

In a stunning shock, the ninth-ranked Clemson Tigers were defeated by the Duke Blue Devils with a final score of 28-7 in their season opener. Since defeating Clemson in 1989, this was Duke’s first victory over a top-10 foe. The Blue Devils, entering the matchup as two-touchdown underdogs, orchestrated an exceptional performance under the guidance of coach Mike Elko. This victory ended Duke’s 19-year winless streak against Clemson but also represented their first win against a top-10 opponent since legendary coach Steve Spurrier’s era in 1989.

Clemson has rebuilt offense under the direction of first-year coach Garrett Riley and quarterback Cade Klubnik, but the Tigers had trouble getting going. Costly mistakes within the red zone, including a blocked 23-yard field goal and two fumbles near the goal line, marred the Tigers’ performance throughout the contest.

Duke’s quarterback, Riley Leonard, emerged as a star, demonstrating versatility and poise. His electrifying 44-yard touchdown run in the third quarter shifted the game’s momentum in Duke’s favor, and they maintained their lead. Leonard demonstrated his ability to succeed against one of the best defensive units in the country by finishing the game with 273 total yards.

Clemson’s sophomore quarterback, Cade Klubnik, entered the season with considerable expectations and Heisman Trophy considerations. However, his performance in this game raised doubts about whether he lived up to the preseason hype. Klubnik had trouble completing long passes, finishing with 209 passing yards and an average of less than 5 yards per attempt. His sole touchdown came from a short pass to Will Shipley in the first half.

The defeat has prompted questions about the standing of Clemson’s head coach, Dabo Swinney, among the top coaches in college football. While Swinney has garnered substantial acclaim in the past, some now speculate whether his previous success was linked to the presence of exceptional talents such as Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence. The strong debut of former Clemson quarterback DJ Uiagalelei at Oregon State, where he threw for 239 yards and scored five total touchdowns, further cast doubt on Clemson’s offensive struggles. He hasn’t adapted to the changing landscape of college football. He has been vocally against NIL and the Transfer portal.

Although the victory may technically be an upset, it was well-earned and comprehensive. Duke outperformed Clemson in every facet of the game, highlighting their physicality, speed, and determination. The Blue Devils’ offensive line demonstrated resilience against Clemson’s formidable defense, and their team speed rivaled, if not surpassed, that of the Tigers.

Clemson faces a formidable challenge to rebound from this unexpected setback. Conversely, Duke has gained substantial momentum and will look to build on this historic win as they prepare to face Lafayette in their next game. Duke’s remarkable triumph over Clemson not only surprised the college football community but raised questions about the trajectory of both teams in the 2023 season. As the season unfolds, fans and pundits will closely monitor how Duke and Clemson respond to this early-season twist of fate.

Ravens Season Preview

Lamar Jackson took over the Ravens’ starting job in 2019 and has established Baltimore as a regular season juggernaut. They’ve gone 39-14 in games he has started. Despite their regular season success, the Ravens have only won one playoff game. Baltimore enters the 2023-2024 season with their most talented roster in the Jackson era. If this roster remains healthy, they can definitely contend for the Lombardi Trophy.

Jackson and the Ravens’ offensive attack receives media attention, but the defense has been the anchor. Baltimore’s defense is versatile in the schemes they present. Defensive Coordinator Mike Macdonald likes to incorporate different defensive packages to confuse opposing offenses. Two stud linebackers, Patrick Queen and Roquan Smith, anchor the Ravens’ defense.

Queen struggled early in his career, specifically in coverage. GM Eric DeCosta solved this problem by trading for Smith. He is a stout coverage linebacker who will allow Queen to play as the WILL linebacker. That position is certainly a better fit for Queen’s skillset. Behind Queen and Smith is an elite secondary highlighted by Marlon Humphrey and Marcus Williams. Players have filtered in and out of this defense but, overall, it’s fair to expect the Ravens’ defense to remain a top-five unit.

Roquan Smith and Patrick Queen Are 'Arguably the Best Linebacker Duo in the League'

Photo Cred: Baltimore Ravens

Throughout the Jackson era, the biggest hole in an otherwise elite offense has been the lack of a clear #1 wide receiver. In comes Zay Flowers. Flowers is the 22nd overall pick in this year’s draft. He is an elite route runner and also has the speed as well as strong cuts to create separation. Mark Andrews has been a reliable target for Jackson over the middle. The addition of a trustworthy outside option will allow the Ravens passing game to take the next step. The Ravens’ rushing attack has been elite throughout the Jackson era. With J.K. Dobbins fully healthy, there is no reason to expect any regression. If the Ravens’ passing attack can make progress, it will open the run game to see an improvement.

Outside of wide receivers, the main roadblock for the team has been injuries. Some recent examples are: Jackson missing the playoffs last year and Ronnie Stanley playing just 18 games over the past three seasons. The Ravens have always been down key players come playoff time. If the Ravens can avoid injuries, there is certainly enough talent and experience for Baltimore to make a deep playoff run.

It was a historic day for the Cincinnati Bearcats by all means. They made their Big 12 debut in rather dominating fashion, and the players also naturally made history. Quarterback Emory Jones put up six touchdowns overall in the first half! The game was basically a blowout 66-10 win against the Eastern Kentucky Colonels on Saturday at Nippert Stadium.

It was a game of the first, as the former University of Louisville head coach led the Bearcats to the victory in his Cincinnati debut. This was thanks to 667 offensive yards overall. The offense seeks to keep the momentum left by former head coach Luke Fickell, who left for Wisconsin. Jones finished 19-of-23 for 345 yards and five touchdowns. He spread those touchdowns to five different receivers. Additionally, he ran for two rushing touchdowns. His performance was a single-game school record of seven total touchdowns by a quarterback.

Other stars on the offense were Junior running back Corey Kiner, who rushed for 105 yards. Backup quarterback Brady Lichtenberg had his first two career touchdowns. The competition may not have been great, but UC showed Nippert that the Bearcats will be difficult to manage once the Big 12 conference games start.

“First thing I want to say is how awesome it was to play in Nippert; it was everything that I anticipated being and then some,” Satterfield said. “We fed off that energy right from the start. I think on our first drive we went down and hit a big touchdown, and from that point forward, we really didn’t slow down. Our players were very focused and intent on coming out and playing a great game. They did that. It was awesome to see.”

The defense harassed EKU’s quarterback Parker McKinney. He only had 177 passing yards overall. The Bearcats safety Bryon Threats and cornerback Justin Harris recorded an interception in front of a sold-out crowd of 38,193. EKU couldn’t get much going on the ground either. Cincinnati will go to land of the ACC and play Pittsburgh this Saturday.

NCAA Suspends Maason Smith

This past Thursday, the NCAA announced that they were handing a one-game suspension to the LSU sophomore. The NCAA received word that Smith accepted an improper benefit from an autograph signing in the summer of 2021. The signing took place before NIL deals went into action.

NIL Deals

NIL deals came into effect on July 1, 2021. The term NIL means name, image, and likeness. This describes what college athletes can receive financial compensation on. This allows all NCAA D1, D2, and D3 student-athletes to receive marketing and promotional endeavors through their name, image, and likeness.

Smith Cooperates with NCAA

The NCAA completed its investigation into Smith and Kayshon Boutte after it was alleged that the two signed autographs for fans in exchange for cash. The incident took place just one month before NIL deals came into action. Boutte fulfilled his suspension last season and sat out during the Tigers’ matchup against New Mexico. However, Smith was injured at the time and was not able to complete his. Now that he is back playing, the NCAA is determined for him to accept his consequences.

Paul Finebaum Comments on the Situation

Paul Finebaum released a clip of his show on Twitter, where he commented on Smith and the NCAA. Attached to the clip was a comment saying, “With the Maason Smith case, the NCAA shows who they truly serve. No one.”

In the clip, Finebaum says, “Maason Smith was at this signing one month before it was legal. If he’d done the signing the next month, they couldn’t have investigated it. That’s where the NCAA—just use common sense. Say, ‘You know what, it may not technically be kosher here, but we’re going to show some fairness.”

Smith’s Comeback Season

The season opener against Florida State was set to be a redemption game for Smith. However, this suspension serves as only a minor setback. The defensive tackle suffered a season-ending injury during the Tigers’ matchup against the Seminoles last season in New Orleans. Although Smith is disappointed by the NCAA’s decision, he is excited to be back on the gridiron for week 2 against Grambling State.

Buffs Shock TCU in First Game Under Coach Prime

Photo Cred: Action Network

Colorado entered the 2023-24 college football season with questions and almost no answers. On Saturday, they may not have left with definitive answers but they did gain the attention of everyone around the country. They beat no. 17 TCU 45-42 on the road. This win comes a few weeks after the Buffs announced they would return to the Big 12. How convenient is it, then, that they found themselves tangled in an old-fashioned Big 12 shootout! It was also the first game with Deion Sanders at the helm as well. It was a back-and-forth affair that saw six lead changes in the second half alone.

The Buffs kicked off the third quarter in style, with Shadeur Sanders hitting true freshman running back Dylan Edwards on a screen. It went for a 75-yard touchdown and gave CU a 24-14 lead. The Horned Frogs responded with two Chandler Morris touchdown passes, though. This gave them a 28-24 lead towards the end of the quarter. The teams traded rushing touchdowns, and then TCU got the Buffs to third-and-16. TCU still held onto a four-point lead. Sanders found Travis Hunter up the seam for 43 yards to convert the third down. He then followed it up with a 26-yard touchdown strike to South Florida transfer Jimmy Horn Jr.

A massive kickoff return followed by a Trey Sanders touchdown run put TCU back in front, but the Buffs’ new signal-caller was far from done. He hit Edwards out in the flat on 4th and 2, and the speedy freshman did the rest, making two defenders miss and taking it 46 yards for the decisive score. The Buff’s defense was shaky throughout, giving up far too many big plays, but when the time came to buckle down and get a stop, they did. On 4th and 9 with under a minute to play, Arkansas transfer Myles Slusher made an excellent open-field tackle to seal the deal and give the Buffs their first win under Coach Prime.

Much was made of the number of fresh faces brought into Boulder this offseason, but there’s no denying they showed up in week one. Sanders lit up the Horned Frog defense to the tune of a school-record 510 yards and four touchdowns in his Colorado debut and was excellent throughout, displaying everything you want in a Power Five quarterback. He was decisive and on time but didn’t force anything that wasn’t there. His accuracy and arm talent were on display with multiple beautiful deep balls on the outside. Sanders also displayed great poise in the pocket and escapability, making quite a few plays after the initial play broke down.

Not to be outdone by his Jackson State counterpart, Hunter (the two-way star) put on a scintillating show on both sides of the ball. He finished the day with 11 catches for 119 yards on offense. On defense, he consistently played lockdown coverage and even produced a crucial red zone interception on defense. Hunter played over 120 snaps at the end of the game. His day was modest considering what he left out on the field. Over the course of the game, a few key things happened. He let a long touchdown pass slip out of his hands as he came to the ground. He was even interfered with on another near-touchdown. Lastly, he nearly had a second interception on a slant that he jumped and batted away.

While not as highly touted as Sanders and Hunter, Edwards also showed off his explosive ability in the receiving game on Saturday. He finished the game with five catches for 135 yards and tallied four total touchdowns (one rushing, three receiving). Running back Emani Bailey notched an efficient 164 yards on 14 carries. His counterpart, Trey Sanders, scored three times on the ground. On the TCU side, new quarterback Chandler Morris got off to a rocky start but settled in over the course of the afternoon, finishing 24-for-42 with 279 yards, two touchdowns, and two picks.

Shilo Sanders and Marvin Ham II led the team with ten tackles. Safety Trevor Woods also excelled with nine tackles and a critical first-half interception. He was the lone holdover from the 2022 Buffs defense. There’s still obviously a lot of football left. However, the Buffs could not have asked for a better start to the Deion Sanders era! They were exciting and explosive throughout. Just enough was done on defense to pull out a road win against last year’s national runner-up. The Buffs will try to keep the momentum going next weekend. They take on rival Nebraska in their home opener with kickoff in Boulder at 10 A.M. MST.
