The Heisman race is heating up. With the College Football rankings on the way, these players will either led their team to the playoffs or fall just short. So, as we move into to November, who is leading the way to be the next Heisman?

1. Michael Penix Jr., Washington

Michael Penix Jr. - Football - University of Washington AthleticsPhoto Cred: Washington

Last week, Michael Penix Jr. maintained his top spot in the rankings with an impressive average of 368 yards per game, a completion rate of 70.8%, and an average of 10 yards per attempt. Penix appeared to be nursing an injury towards the end of the Oregon match and seemed off his game against Arizona State. While some have speculated about a connection, Washington’s coaching staff attributed his performance dip to being “under the weather.”

2. Bo Nix, Oregon

Bo Nix secured his second-place ranking with his remarkable performances. He boasts a stellar 78.4% completion rate and a passer rating of 180.3, with just one interception. Unlike Penix, Nix operates without the intense scrutiny that often accompanies frontrunners. This places him in an advantageous position to make a strong push in November and possibly overtake the competition.

3. Dillon Gabriel, Oklahoma

The senior left-handed quarterback completed 25 of 38 passes for 253 yards and three touchdowns in the 31-29 victory against the UCF Knights. Gabriel’s precision was evident as he distributed passes to nine different players, with redshirt freshman Nic Anderson standing out with five receptions for 105 yards and two touchdowns. In total, he has accumulated 2,131 passing yards and 230 rushing yards, steering the Sooners to an impressive 7-0 record.

4. Jordan Travis, Florida State

The seasoned senior was 27 of 36 passes with 268 yards and two touchdowns against #16 Duke. He led the charge on the ground, contributing a team-high 62 rushing yards and securing a touchdown. Travis truly shone in the late stages of the game, orchestrating three consecutive scoring drives that ultimately sealed the win for the Seminoles. With this victory, Florida State has extended their remarkable winning streak to 13 games, making them the sole undefeated team in the ACC.

5. J.J. McCarthy, Michigan

As the season unfolds, McCarthy’s statistics are nothing short of outstanding. He boasts an impressive completion rate of 78.1% through eight games, having amassed 1,799 yards and contributed to 21 total touchdowns. McCarthy’s exceptional performance continues to fuel Michigan’s winning streak and solidify his status as a standout quarterback. The star, now in his second year as the Wolverines’ starter, delivered an almost flawless performance in their resounding 49-0 triumph over Michigan State.

Notably, he has expanded his skill set, particularly in shooting.

Max Abmas is set to embark on a new chapter in his college basketball career as he joins the Texas Longhorns in a highly competitive conference for his fifth and final season. Abmas, known for his outstanding performance during his four-year stint with Oral Roberts, has already established himself as a formidable force in the NCAA. Notably, he maintained an impressive scoring average of at least 21 points per game for the last three seasons, amassing a career total of 2561 points.

His three-point shooting prowess is commendable, with a career shooting percentage of just under 39%. He will now contend regularly against formidable power conference opponents, quite different from his previous matchups with mid-major teams. As the season unfolds, the basketball community eagerly anticipates how Abmas’ game will adapt to this new environment. His combination of raw talent, invaluable experience, and a remarkable track record make him a rare find in college basketball, making him a player to watch this season.

Houston: LJ Cryer

Houston faced the challenging task of rebuilding their backcourt after losing key players, but they managed to secure a significant addition in the form of LJ Cryer. Cryer is a versatile combo guard with extensive Big 12 experience. As a junior, he made his mark by averaging an impressive 15.0 points per game while boasting excellent shooting percentages. He steps onto the court to partially fill the void left by the departures of Marcus Sasser and Tramon Mark, showcasing his ability to play both guard positions for the Cougars.

His remarkable outside shooting skills were on full display, as he maintained a 41% success rate from beyond the arc last season. The upcoming season places a heavier burden on Cryer to assume a prominent scoring role, especially given Houston’s new venture into the Big 12 conference. This season promises to be an intriguing chapter in his collegiate career as he strives to impact both ends of the court.

1. Michigan

In a not-so-surprising development, Michigan’s dominance on the gridiron has catapulted them to the undisputed No. 1 spot in the initial College Football Playoff (CFP) rankings. While debates about the Wolverines’ strength of schedule persist, there is no denying their sheer dominance against every opponent they’ve encountered this season. With an unblemished record and a clear path ahead, Michigan’s ascent to the top is a testament to their impeccable performance. CBS has officially bestowed the Wolverines with the coveted No. 1 ranking, setting the stage for highly anticipated clashes against Penn State and Ohio State, which promise to be must-see television events.

2. Ohio State

As Michigan solidifies its position at the pinnacle of the College Football Playoff rankings, Ohio State emerges as the rightful occupant of the No. 2 slot. The Buckeyes have bolstered their case with a collection of quality wins, including notable victories over Notre Dame and Penn State. Nonetheless, the CFP committee may place more weight on Michigan’s dominance and the elusive “eye test” when considering the rankings. It’s worth noting that, last year, the college football world came tantalizingly close to witnessing a regular-season showdown and a CFP rematch between these two powerhouses. As the 2023 season unfolds, fans can only hope for an encore.

3. Florida State

The ascent of Florida State in the College Football Playoff rankings should come as no surprise. The CFP committee is likely to view the Seminoles’ triumph over Duke as a significant feather in their cap. Despite Clemson’s ongoing struggles, a road win over the Tigers remains a noteworthy achievement. On paper, Florida State boasts a formidable roster on both sides of the football, with quarterback Jordan Travis emerging as a legitimate Heisman contender.

4. Georgia

Georgia, the perennial No. 1 team in various polls, finds itself hanging on to the fourth spot. It is undeniably intriguing to see Georgia positioned as the last team in, despite maintaining an impeccable record and relatively consistent performance over the past two years. While the Bulldogs may not currently exude the same level of dominance, they unquestionably remain legitimate contenders for the national title.

5. Washington

While their victory over Oregon undoubtedly stands as the highlight of the season, Washington’s recent encounter with Arizona State raised a few eyebrows. Nevertheless, the Huskies have maintained an unwavering and undefeated presence throughout the season. In the world of college football rankings, an unblemished record carries substantial weight and, as it stands, Washington appears poised for a potential return to the final four.

6. Oklahoma

Ohio St. and Michigan will knock each other out. A Big 12 Championship, combined with a perfect season, positions Oklahoma favorably for a coveted spot in the final four. While the road ahead may present its challenges, it remains uncertain. Additionally, Oklahoma may be on the brink of a highly anticipated rematch with Texas in their conference title game.

LSU Tigers: A Year of Promise

LSU WBB's 2023-24 roster: Can the Tigers repeat? - On3

Photo Cred: On3.com

Head coach Kim Mulkey’s tenure at LSU has been spectacular. With a national championship under her belt, she secured two top-tier players from the transfer portal: Hailey Van Lith and Aneesah Morrow. Mulkey also has secured the No. 1 high school recruiting class. Moreover, she now holds the title of the highest-paid coach in women’s college basketball, with a lucrative 10-year, $36 million contract. It doesn’t stop there, as the LSU Tigers’ prospects for the upcoming season look incredibly promising!

Even if they were just returning the likes of Angel Reese, SEC Freshman of the Year Flau’jae Johnson, Kateri Poole, and Sa’Myah Smith, they would still be strong contenders for a Final Four appearance. However, when you factor in the talented additions from the transfer portal, both of whom have the potential to become All-Americans, LSU emerges as the clear preseason No. 1. Mulkey will also have the luxury of incorporating gifted freshman Mikaylah Williams, the second-ranked recruit in the nation, and the towering 6-foot-5 Aalyah Del Rosario into a rotation that is deeper than in previous seasons.

UConn Huskies: A Tale of Talent and Uncertainty

Huskies Announce 2023-24 Non-Conference Schedule - University of Connecticut Athletics

In Storrs, the UConn Huskies boast a roster that rivals the best in the nation. Star players like Paige Bueckers, Azzi Fudd, and Aaliyah Edwards are undeniably among the top 10 or 15 players. Nika Muhl, who set a single-season school record for assists last season, adds a valuable dimension to the team. Aubrey Griffin and Caroline Ducharme, both former high school All-Americans, have proven their worth as highly productive contributors for UConn. However, a key question mark for the Huskies is how effectively head coach Geno Auriemma can get all these remarkable talents on the court together. Injuries have plagued the program for the past two years, and the concern remains.

Bueckers, who also missed a huge portion of the 2021-22 season due to knee injuries, recently injured her thumb in preseason practice. She and Fudd, two of the nation’s most highly touted recruits in 2020 and 2021, have played only nine games together due to various injuries. Edwards, who has been the most dependable of the group, exhibited tremendous growth last season and often carried the team on her shoulders. Although the Huskies’ remarkable streak of 14 consecutive Final Four appearances ended in the spring, a healthy UConn team would be the favorites to start a new one.

UCLA Bruins: A New Era of Excellence

UCLA Women's Basketball: 2023-24 Pac-12 Conference Schedule Announced - Sports Illustrated UCLA Bruins News, Analysis and More

Photo Cred: SI

The UCLA Bruins, under the guidance of Coach Cori Close, are poised for greatness in the upcoming season. This could very well be her best team to date. The top two recruits from the 2022 class, Lauren Betts and Kiki Rice, have chosen to wear the Bruins’ colors. They possess the potential to form one of the most formidable inside-outside duos for the next three seasons. Rice impressed with 11.6 points per game, along with her classmate Londynn Jones, and earned a spot on the Pac-12 All-Freshman team.

Betts, a Stanford transfer, stands tall at 6-7 and provides Close with a coveted rim protector and post presence by lightening the load on her talented perimeter players. Charisma Osborne, who decided to return rather than enter the WNBA draft, shines the brightest with an average of 15.6 points per game. Emily Bessoir, a 6-4 junior, displayed remarkable improvement across the board last season and is the Bruins’ most accurate 3-point shooter (35.7%). With the potential for Jones and Gabriela Jaquez to elevate their game as sophomores, Close could well oversee the Pac-12’s most versatile rotation.

Ohio State Buckeyes: Defensive Dominance

Ohio State women's basketball 2023-24 player preview: Rikki Harris - Land-Grant Holy Land

Photo Cred: Land-Grant Holy Land

The Ohio State Buckeyes have been a defensive force, culminating in the second-highest number of turnovers in the Big Ten last season. With the addition of Duke transfer Celeste Taylor, the ACC Defensive Player of the Year, the Buckeyes’ defense is better. Taylor joins Jacy Sheldon, who averaged 3.5 steals in the 13 games she played. That backcourt is poised to wreak havoc, particularly in coach Kevin McGuff’s full-court press strategy. The team might miss the scoring prowess of Taylor Mikesell, last season’s leading scorer, but the return of Cotie McMahon is a reason for optimism.

McMahon is the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, displayed remarkable potential, and was often the Buckeyes’ standout player on the court. She is a potential All-American for the next three years and perfectly suits Ohio State’s up-tempo style of play. The same holds true for Taylor Thierry, who significantly improved her scoring average from 2.9 PPG as a freshman to 13.5 in her second season. The return of 6-4 Rebeka Mikulasikova, who averaged 10.1 PPG, provides the Buckeyes with a proven inside scoring option.

Utah Utes: A Team on the Rise

The Utah Utes are ready to embark on a new season and have an advantage of all five starters returning. With the guidance of Coach Lynne Roberts, the team is in a great position to build upon their success, having finished just behind Stanford in the Pac-12 and reaching their first Sweet 16 since 2006. Alissa Pili, the reigning Conference Player of the Year, leads the returners with her dominant and efficient inside presence. She will be complementing her team with an impressive 42.6% shooting from beyond the arc.

The junior guard duo of Gianna Kneepkens and Jenna Johnson, who have a combined 110 starts in their first two seasons, averaged over 27 points per game last season. Kneepkens and Kennady McQueen are two three-point threats on the team, while senior point guard Isabel Palmer is the glue that holds everything together. The addition of Maty Wilke, a 5-10 guard who averaged 11.8 points per game as a freshman at Wisconsin, adds further intrigue to an already promising roster.

Can Purdue Avenge the Disappointment of their March Madness Loss?

Are you ready for Big 10 basketball? The Purdue Boilermakers have staked their claim as the best team in the conference and the sport. They have one of the best players in the country and one of the most outstanding coaches in the sport. Home-court advantage is theirs, and they have a formidable returning team. These attributes make Purdue the No. 1 team in the Big 10.

The heart of the team is Zach Edey, a center who is a powerhouse putting up 22.3 points and 12.9 rebounds. Edey is an obvious choice as preseason National Player of the Year. He is seeking to become the first back-to-back National Player of the Year since Bill Walton. He’s already one of the best Big 10 players in history and looks cement his legacy. In an era when the most substantial figures on the court were invariably the most towering, Edey is a throwback to that tradition, capturing the essence of college basketball’s must-see attraction. The reason for adorning Purdue’s logo with the No. 1 designation is my belief that Edey will elevate his performance even further in his senior season, despite potentially posting slightly lower statistics.

“Purdue has been great to me,” Edey said. “The campus loves me, the coaches love me, I love my teammates and then we have a chance to really compete for every championship there is in the country. So I think when you have an opportunity like that, it’s hard to pass up.”

Purdue is coming off a shocking loss to Fairleigh Dickinson during March Madness, a No. 16 seed. The loss looms large over the program. Purdue will lean on Mason Gillis and Caleb Furst for the scoring spark outside of Edey. A pivotal element of Purdue’s success will be sophomore point guard Braden Smith leading the team’s offense. He is poised for an impressive performance this year. Fletcher Loyer needs to pick up his three-point shooting, which once stood at 32.6%.

The Boilermakers welcome freshman Myles Colvin, a highly regarded four-star high school prospect. The Boilermakers possess a well-rounded arsenal, boasting depth, size, staunch defense, and seasoned wing play. Purdue has the catching, star players, depth, and mindset to avenge their disappointing lost showing from last spring. Most significantly, they are fueled by an unquenchable motivation to secure the school’s first Final Four appearance in over four decades.

In a surprising move during the offseason, Kyle Filipowski declined the NBA draft and returned to Duke. Filipowski was named the ACC Rookie of the Year, as he averaged 15.1 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 1.6 assists. The Blue Devils had a nine-game winning streak, thanks to his play. He will challenge Purdue’s Zach Edey for the National Player of the Year award at the end of the season, and he seems like a lock for the ACC Player of the Year honors as well.

Four other standout players also warrant close observation for the All-ACC First-Team:

  • Armando Bacot | Center | North Carolina: Bacot has decided to return for another season after averaging 15.9 points and 10.4 rebounds last year. This is a slight decrease from his 2021-22 season, where he averaged 16.3 points and 13.1 rebounds during UNC’s Final Four run.
  • Blake Hinson | Forward | Pittsburgh: Hinson is coming off a career-best season, recording averages of 15.3 points and six rebounds. He helped get the Panthers to the NCAA Tournament last year, their first time in six years. The Panthers are thrilled with what he can bring this year.
  • Nijel Pack | Guard | Miami: Miami lost their two top scorers (guards Isaiah Wong and Jordan Miller) to the NBA Draft. This creates an opportunity for Pack to assume a more prominent role. He put up 13.6 points during the regular season and an impressive 16.4 points during the NCAA Tournament. He was the third-best player on the team and will get more shots this year.
  • Tyrese Proctor | Guard | Duke: Proctor had the potential to enter the NBA Draft but has opted to return to Duke instead. He posted averages of 9.4 points, 3.3 assists, and 3.1 rebounds. This year, he’ll have more experience and free range in the offense. His decision to stay offers the Blue Devils more depth and experience.

This game is not at a neutral site but at the formidable Allen Fieldhouse, where Kansas enjoys one of the best home-court advantages in college basketball. The reigning champions have a tough schedule, with three ranked games in the opening weeks. UConn’s star big man Donovan Clingan is recovering from injury but should play in time for this game. The showdown between Clingan and Michigan transfer Hunter Dickinson is a must-watch. Not to mention Rutgers transfer Cam Spencer, who is ready to lead the team to back-to-back championships.

This is the most iconic rivalry in college basketball. Both teams return starters and key players. This year’s Tar Heels features familiar faces, with Armando Bacot and RJ Davis back, but also many new ones who Carolina fans hope will help them get back to the top of the mountain. It’s Hubert Davis and Jon Scheyer leading UNC and Duke. The Blue Devils emerged victorious in both games last year, but UNC has a lead in the head-to-head series with 143 wins to Duke’s 115.

Bo Nix etched his name into the NCAA record books on Saturday, marking his 54th consecutive start and leading the Ducks to a resounding victory against a struggling Washington State team. Oregon was determined to rebound after a heart-wrenching 33-36 loss to the Washington Huskies just a week prior, and their rivals from Washington State shared a similar sense of urgency after suffering back-to-back defeats against UCLA and Arizona. This game was pivotal for both teams to maintain their standing in the national conversation.

The Cougars showed promise early in the game by holding the Ducks to only field goal attempts on their first two possessions. Nikia Johnson’s rushing touchdown gave Washington State a 10-3 lead. Nevertheless, Oregon countered with rushing touchdowns from both Bucky Irving and Bo Nix, keeping Washington State at bay with a halftime score of 13-17.

The second half saw the Ducks asserting their dominance. A 42-yard touchdown pass from Nix to Irving, combined with an electrifying 43-yard TD run by Irving, significantly widened Oregon’s lead. Despite Cameron Ward’s impressive 438 passing yards for the Cougars, he struggled to find the end zone until the closing moments of the fourth quarter. Ward connected with Isaiah Hamilton for a 16-yard touchdown, resulting in a final score of 24-38.

The standout performer of the game for Oregon was undoubtedly running back Bucky Irving, who showcased his continued improvement throughout the season. Irving rushed for 129 yards and scored two rushing touchdowns, an impressive feat on its own. However, his contributions didn’t stop there, as he also made three receptions for 51 yards and added another touchdown to his impressive tally. On the opposing side, kicker Dean Janikowski had a solid outing for the Cougars, consistently converting field goals, including a remarkable 50-yarder in the third quarter.

The two teams displayed different offensive strategies, with Washington State amassing 495 total yards. They gained their yards primarily through the air, as they managed only 57 rushing yards. In contrast, Oregon’s offense demonstrated more balance, accumulating 540 total yards (293 yards in the passing game and 247 on the ground). Looking ahead, both teams are set to hit the road next Saturday, with Oregon facing a formidable Utah squad in Salt Lake City, while Washington State takes on ASU in Tempe.
