On January 25, 2024, WKU faced off against the FIU Panthers in Bowling Green, KY. It was the annual “Block Out Cancer” Game, so the crowd wore pink shirts and passionately cheered on the Tops during their high-scoring 105-91 victory over the Panthers.

This was the inaugural “Pink Out” game where the Hilltoppers fans and the team demonstrated their support for cancer survivors. This event was aided by Bowling Green’s Med Center Health, which provided the first 5,000 fans with a pink “Block Out Cancer” shirt. The initiative featured auctions and fan donations, allowing supporters to purchase items such as Dontaie Allen’s warm-up shirt or even four tickets behind the WKU bench. Western Kentucky successfully raised $4,200 in donations, which went towards Coaches vs. Cancer and the American Cancer Society.

Challenging First Half for WKU:

The game initially appeared to be a closely contested battle for the Hilltoppers. It ended with a buzzer-beater from Panthers’ guard Javaunte Hawkins, resulting in a 49-46 score in favor of Western Kentucky. Despite the close score, the game felt less competitive than the numbers suggested. The Panthers encountered early foul trouble, with two key players (Dashon Gittens and Mohamed Sanogo) facing restrictions throughout the game.

WKU shot 57.1% from the field, with Dontaie Allen leading the charge with a remarkable 14-point first half at an impressive 80% shooting. This was already double his season average! Although the team struggled with three-point shooting initially, they rallied towards the end of the half. Allen contributed two key three-pointers to elevate the team’s three-point percentage to 42.9%.

FIU remained competitive by consistently launching three-pointers, preventing the Tops from ever establishing a substantial lead. Despite the Panthers shooting 41% from the field and attempting 20 three-pointers, their three-point percentage reached 50%! With 30 points coming from threes, WKU found it challenging to pull away from Florida International.

The Hilltoppers Surge in the Second Half:

In the second half, the Tops showcased their skills, with Dontaie Allen leading the charge. His stellar performance saw him end the game going 9-for-11 from the field and an impressive 5-for-7 from three-point range. This game marked a milestone for Allen, as he achieved his first 30-point game with WKU.

Head coach Steve Lutz commented, “You know, nobody has ever lost confidence in Dontaie and Dontaie works hard. He does the right things, and he deserves to be rewarded. So, like, as long as he sticks with it, he’s going to continue to have his nights, you know, and I say that with all of them.”

The Hilltoppers had a commanding 12-0 run within the first three minutes of the half, and they didn’t take their foot off the pedal until the game was out of reach for the Panthers. Florida International attempted many shots with about five minutes left in the game in order to salvage the situation. FIU would end up losing by 14 only, even though they trailed by 20 for most of the half.

A Good Win to Look Forward To:

This win was significant for Western Kentucky, especially after a rough two-game road skid. They faced setbacks in both losses, with second-half struggles proving costly, particularly in the New Mexico State game. Despite holding a 25-point lead with 14 minutes remaining, WKU suffered a 70-72 defeat.

In this home game, the Hilltoppers secured a majority of their season-high 105 points during the second half. This performance certainly gives hope to the fans that their team can reclaim the top spot in the conference. Their upcoming match against Sam Houston on Thursday, February 1st, 2024, holds added significance, as the Bearkats are currently tied for first place in the C-USA.

Two weeks ago, Jerry Jones announced that Mike McCarthy would be returning for the 2024-2025 season, a decision that surprised many given the Cowboys’ recent performance. Despite winning 12 games for the third consecutive regular season, the team fell short of reaching the conference championship—a feat not seen since 1970. Let us look at why many people thought that this was an improbable outcome.

Think about that for a second. Under McCarthy’s leadership, Dallas has consistently excelled in the regular season over the past three years. Despite that, they usually crumble in ugly fashion when the postseason arrives. The recent loss against the Packers in the Wild Card round marked the first home defeat for the Cowboys since Week 1 of the 2022-2023 season. Unfortunately for the team, this defeat could not have come at a worse time, as it has left fans with lingering doubts about several key figures within the organization.

Given the Cowboys’ impressive roster, passionate fanbase, and established culture, expectations for greatness are of the highest priority each season. Jones recently issued this statement:

“This team is very close and capable of achieving our ultimate goals and the best step forward for us will be with Mike McCarthy as our head coach. There is great benefit to continuing the team’s progress under Mike’s leadership as our head coach.”

The roster boasts standout players such as Dak Prescott, who delivered a remarkable performance with 39 touchdowns, 4,919 yards, and 11 interceptions. He was a frontrunner for the MVP title for a significant portion of the year. CeeDee Lamb, with an outstanding regular season, narrowly missed securing the wide receiver triple crown by one touchdown. He had the best statistical year a receiver has ever had with Dallas, which makes him a pivotal asset. Jake Ferguson, a promising young talent at tight end, adds further depth. Despite a somewhat down year, Tony Pollard still achieved a significant milestone by rushing for 1,000 yards.

The Cowboys’ defense demonstrated outstanding performance as well, consistently ranking in the top five across various categories leading up to the postseason. Bolstering this formidable defense is Micah Parsons, one of the most talented defensive players in the league. Despite these strengths, a historical upset occurred in the NFL postseason, as a 7-seed managed to defeat this highly regarded team for the first time since the restructuring of the playoffs.

Since Mike McCarthy joined Dallas, the team has faced a notable struggle in achieving playoff success. In his first year in 2020, the team finished with a 6-10 record and missed the playoffs entirely. It’s worth noting that McCarthy inherited the coaching role during a challenging period, and the team wasn’t in an ideal state when he assumed the position. However, playoff success has remained an elusive goal for the Cowboys during McCarthy’s tenure.

Heading into the 2021 season, Dallas aimed for significant improvement, achieving a notable turnaround with a 12-5 record. It was an impressive doubling of their win total within a year! They clinched the NFC East but faced an unexpected end to their season in the Wild Card round, suffering a 23-17 upset by the 49ers. Notably, this marked McCarthy’s first playoff loss with the team.

In 2022, the team maintained high expectations and once again secured a 12-5 record, earning the fifth seed in the NFC. They defeated the Buccaneers 31-14 in what turned out to be Tom Brady’s final game. Despite this victory, their playoff journey was cut short with a 19-12 loss to the 49ers in the divisional round.

Following the defeat against the Packers in 2023, McCarthy’s postseason record with the team now stands at 1-3, even though he holds a 42-25 record during the regular season.

Despite criticism directed at both the head coach and the quarterback, which is a common scenario for struggling teams, Jerry Jones expressed confidence in McCarthy. He has found postseason success in the past, having won a Super Bowl with the Packers in 2010.

In the NFL, the prevailing notion suggests that a franchise quarterback is required to secure a championship. However, examining the modern era reveals that even franchise quarterbacks have often clinched only one or none of the coveted Lombardi Trophies. The Super Bowl’s history features numerous instances where MVPs, all-time greats, and fan couldn’t guide their teams to Super Bowl win. Jim Kelly, Dan Marino, Matt Ryan, Phillip Rivers, Warren Moon, Dan Fouts, and Fran Tarkenton never won a ring.

NEW YORK — Jan. 30, 2024 — This year’s NFL playoffs averaged 38.5 million viewers (TV+Digital) for the Wild Card, Divisional and Conference Championship rounds – the most-watched playoffs ever (records date back to 1988). The 38.5 million average viewers across the NFL playoffs are up +9% versus last year.

Additionally, each individual round was up in viewership compared to last year, with the Wild Card round averaging 31.2 million (up +8%), Divisional Round averaging 40.0 million (up +7% and most-watched ever) and Championship Sunday averaging 56.1 million (up +11% and most-watched ever). More than half of all Americans using television in NFL windows were watching NFL games with a share of 53.3% for the full playoffs – highest on record. In total, 120.4 million viewers tuned in for Championship Sunday – the highest total unduplicated audience since 2016-17.

“Our record-breaking viewership is driven by the incredible play on the field that only the NFL postseason can deliver and presented by the best media partners in the business,” said Hans Schroeder, executive vice president of media distribution with the NFL. “All eyes now turn to Las Vegas for what will be the culmination of an unbelievable season with Super Bowl LVIII.”

The Kansas City Chiefs face the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday, Feb. 11 at 6:30 p.m. ET at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on CBS, Paramount+, Nickelodeon and Univision, and on mobile with NFL+.
