Brazil to Host the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday Night of Week 1 of the 2024 NFL Regular Season

LAS VEGAS — Feb. 5, 2024 — The National Football League today announced that the Philadelphia Eagles will play as the designated team in the historic first-ever regular season game in Brazil, as part of the 2024 International Games. In another first, the game will be played on Friday, Sept. 6, 2024, the first time the NFL has played a game on Friday night of their opening weekend in over 50 years (Cardinals at Rams, Sept. 18, 1970).

The game will take place in the city of São Paulo at the Corinthians Arena, home to Brazilian soccer team SC Corinthians. The stadium was an official venue for both the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games. The Eagles’ opponent, along with the kickoff time, will be announced closer to when the 2024 NFL schedule is revealed this spring.

“This landmark first international game in South America demonstrates the ongoing expansion of our global footprint,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. “Playing on Friday night of Week 1 is a unique way to highlight our international growth and ambitions.”

“The league’s decision to play the game in the first week of the NFL 2024 season is a true testament to their confidence in our work as host city,” said Ricardo Nunes, mayor of São Paulo. “Having this historic spectacle on the eve of Independence Day and driving a great economic impact and job creation for São Paulo, will spotlight our city as a globally relevant destination for the world’s most exciting sport and entertainment events.”

“Welcoming the Philadelphia Eagles, such an iconic and popular NFL franchise, to our city is truly an honor,” added Gustavo Pires, president of São Paulo Turismo. “The passion and dedication of their fanbase will no doubt match the excitement that surrounds the city of São Paulo for this game.”

Five regular season games will be played as part of the 2024 NFL International Games, including the game in São Paulo, Brazil, with the designated teams for the Europe slate already announced.

Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London — the only purpose-built NFL stadium outside of the U.S. — will host games featuring both the Chicago Bears and the Minnesota Vikings, while the Jacksonville Jaguars will return to Wembley Stadium as part of their multi-year commitment to playing a game in the U.K., in what will be their 12th game in the capital.

Munich, Germany, will again host a regular season game, with the Carolina Panthers set to play in Allianz Arena — home of FC Bayern Munich.

With the game in South America, the NFL will have played a game (preseason or regular season) in five of the seven continents around the world.

Each team’s opponent, along with the dates and kickoff times will be announced closer to when the 2024 schedule is revealed this spring.

Following the expansion of the NFL schedule in 2021, up to four of the teams from the conference whose teams are eligible for a ninth regular-season home game were designated to play a neutral-site international game each year.

In 2023, NFL clubs voted to increase league-operated international game inventory from four (4) to up to eight (8) games a season beginning in 2025. Those eight (8) league-operated international games do not include club-operated games, such as the Jaguars hosting a game at Wembley Stadium.

On Saturday, February 3rd, the Virginia Cavaliers clashed with the Clemson Tigers in a highly anticipated ACC matchup at Littlejohn Coliseum. The Cavaliers, riding a five-game winning streak, faced a Clemson team struggling at 4-5 in conference play. Virginia’s vulnerability on the road was a point of concern, but Clemson’s solid 8-3 home record added an element of hope for the home team.

LAS VEGAS — Feb. 5, 2024 — PATRICK MAHOMES and BROCK PURDY were both in elementary school the last time an NFL team won consecutive Super Bowls.

When New England defeated Philadelphia on Feb. 6, 2005, to secure a second straight title in Super Bowl XXXIX, ANDY REID was on the Eagles’ sideline in a 24-21 loss. This time, Reid, Mahomes and the Chiefs have an opportunity to break the longest stretch of seasons without a repeat champion in NFL history. There were eight repeat winners over the first 39 Super Bowls, but none over the last 18.

Nineteen years ago, KYLE SHANAHAN had just ended his first season as an NFL assistant coach with Tampa Bay. And after watching his father, Mike, win consecutive Super Bowls (1997-98) as head coach of the Denver Broncos, the younger Shanahan with a victory this week would make that father-son tandem the first such duo in NFL annals to win Super Bowls as head coaches.

CHRISTIAN McCAFFREY’s dad, Ed, was a wide receiver on each of those Broncos teams and he also earned a ring in San Francisco’s last Super Bowl-winning season, 1994, when Mike Shanahan was the 49ers’ offensive coordinator. TREND TIME: San Francisco quarterback BROCK PURDY entered the league as the final choice in the 2022 NFL Draft, held in Las Vegas. Since that day, Purdy has an .808 winning percentage as a starter, has passed for 9.2 yards per attempt, has compiled a 47-14 touchdown-to-interception ratio and owns a 111.2 passer rating – all the best marks in the NFL among quarterbacks with a minimum of 20 starts (including the postseason).
NEXT GEN STAT OF THE WEEK: San Francisco wide receiver BRANDON AIYUK entered the NFL and joined the 49ers in the first round of a virtual 2020 NFL Draft less than three months after they lost to Kansas City in Super Bowl LIV. Fast forward three years to the 2023 NFC Championship Game. With 6:29 remaining in the third quarter and the 49ers trailing, 24-10, Aiyuk kept his focus in tracking a deflected deep ball and hauled in a 51-yard reception at the Lions’ 6-yard line. According to Next Gen Stats, Aiyuk traveled 10.3 yards while securing that completion. Three plays later, he caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from BROCK PURDY to cut the Detroit lead to one score. AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST: Kansas City’s ISIAH PACHECO is expected to become the first running back since Pro Football Hall of Famer TONY DORSETT in 1977-78 to start Super Bowls in each of his first two NFL seasons. The Chiefs selected Pacheco 251st overall, 11 picks before BROCK PURDY (262nd), in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Like Purdy, Pacheco’s name was announced at a podium in Las Vegas.

First-of-its-Kind NFL Flag Championships Coming This Summer

NEW YORK — Feb. 4, 2024 — The National Football League announced today that the NFL Flag Championships, the world’s premiere youth football flag tournament, will be hosted on July 19-21, at the Hall of Fame Village in Canton, OH. The NFL Flag Championships will feature over 280 teams of girls and boys, NFL Flag regional winners from across the country representing all 32 NFL clubs.

ESPN will provide LIVE coverage of the 30-game showcase, beginning with the round of 16 for 14U boys and 17U girls. The 15 boys and 15 girl’s games will appear on multiple ESPN platforms, including ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN Deportes, ESPN+, and ESPN YouTube. In addition, the games will be available to stream on NFL+.

“The worldwide broadcast of – and global participation in – the NFL Flag Championships, being held at the center of football excellence in Canton, Ohio underscores NFL Flag’s popularity and its global reach,” said Troy Vincent, Sr., executive vice president of NFL football operations. “This tournament emphasizes the importance of Flag Football and will showcase it as the highly competitive cornerstone of affordability, accessibility, and inclusivity of football for all.”

The platforms for the Championship finals will expand to include additional Disney platforms, with both the boys and girl’s games airing on ABC, Disney Channel, Disney XD and ESPN Deportes and streaming on Disney+, ESPN+ and NFL+.

Coverage of the NFL Flag Championships will be available in over 125 countries on ESPN branded networks including Mexico, Brazil, throughout Africa, Australia and New Zealand, Netherlands, the Caribbean, and the Pacific Islands.

The first half of the game concluded in a 31-31 tie, characterized by a defensive battle with both teams hovering around 40 percent shooting from the field. Colorado struggled from beyond the arc, shooting only 1-8 in three-point attempts, while Utah managed a slightly better 4-14 from long range. The Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers will to face off in Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas, Nevada Sunday, Feb. 11, 2024 at 6:30 p.m. EST. This will be the second time the two teams have met in the Super Bowl. The last time they met was in 2020, where the Chiefs beat the 49ers by a score of 31-20. The quarterbacks in that Super Bowl were Patrick Mahomes for the Kansas City Chiefs and Jimmy Garoppolo for the 49ers. This time, the 49ers will have Brock Purdy at the helm, while the Chiefs will have Mahomes again.

Statistical analysis:

In the 2023 regular season, the 49ers had one of the most dominant offenses in the league, averaging 398.4 yards per game and 28.9 points per game, which ranks second behind the Miami Dolphins among all offenses. Meanwhile, the Chiefs had the 9th ranked offense in the league, averaging 351.3 yards per game and 21.8 points per game.

The 49ers had a positive turnover differential in the 2023 regular season of +11, while the Chiefs had a negative turnover differential -11. However, in the postseason, the Chiefs have allowed the lowest passer rating of any other team in the playoffs, 75.2, and generated six total sacks. The 49ers have allowed a passer rating of 81.4 against playoff opponents and generated two sacks in the postseason thus far.

Patrick Mahomes, despite depending alot on Travis Kelce, who is ranked 6th in the NFL this year in passing yards (4,183), 8th in passing touchdowns (27), and had the 8th best QBR in the league (63.0). However, Mahomes also ranked 4th in interceptions this year with 14, tied with Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

Meanwhile, Brock Purdy is ranked 5th in the NFL this year (4,280), 3rd in passing touchdowns (31), and had the best QBR in the league in the regular season (72.7). However, Purdy is ranked 10th in the league in interceptions with 11, tied with Jordan Love of the Green Bay Packers and Matthew Stafford of the Los Angeles Rams.

The San Francisco 49ers have had the 4th best rushing attack of any team in the postseason, averaging 133 yards on the ground, with the Chiefs not too far behind, holding the 5th best rushing attack in the postseason, averaging 127.3 yards per game.

Key players:

The 49ers have a plentiful amount of star power on their team. Whether it’s Christian McCaffrey on offense or Chase Young and Nick Bosa on defense, there is a playmaker at about every position on the field.

Christian McCaffrey: CMC rushed for a career-best 1,459 yards on the ground this season, scoring 14 rush touchdowns and seven through the air. Cumulatively, McCaffrey had 2,023 yards of total offense, making him one of the most dynamic players in the NFL this season and a front runner for the MVP award.

Brandon Aiyuk: Aiyuk totaled a career-best 1,342 receiving yards this past season, ranking him seventh in the NFL. Aiyuk also put up seven receiving touchdowns and averaged 17.9 yards per catch.

George Kittle: Kittle put together his first 1,000-yard receiving year since 2019, accruing 1,020 receiving yards and six touchdowns. Kittle also had his highest average of yards per catch with 15.7 this season.

Chase Young: Former Defensive Rookie of the Year Chase Young was traded to the 49ers from the Washington Commanders in week six of the 2023 NFL regular season for a 2024 third-round pick. Since the trade has occurred, Young has put up 2.5 sacks for the 49ers and ten total tackles while also serving as another big defensive lineman for the 49ers to plug up an opponent’s run game.

Nick Bosa: Bosa put up 10.5 sacks in the 2023 season and forced two fumbles, recovering one of them. Bosa also had 53 tackles on the year and tallied two sacks in the NFC Conference Championship game against the Lions. The Chiefs found offensive help through their rookie wide receiver Rashee Rice and star tight end Travis Kelce this past season; however, the story as of recently has been more centered around the Chiefs defense, with players like LB Nick Bolton and CB L’Jarius Sneed making plays for the Chiefs in critical moments throughout the postseason.

Rashee Rice: Rice finished his rookie year with 938 receiving yards and seven receiving touchdowns, serving as Patrick Mahome’s number two receiving target outside of Travis Kelce this past season. So far in the postseason, Rice has 223 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Travis Kelce: Kelce had another dominant year, leading the Chiefs in receiving yards with 984 and recording five receiving touchdowns on the season. Serving as Patrick Mahomes No. 1 target, Kelce has 262 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns.

The Buffaloes’ men’s basketball team showcased a formidable road presence with a resounding 98-81 victory over the Washington Huskies in Seattle last Wednesday. However, their newfound success was short-lived as they succumbed to the Washington State Cougars in a closely contested 78-69 battle last Saturday in Pullman, Washington. This setback resulted in both teams being tied for 4th place in the Pac-12.

At the halfway mark of the conference season, the Buffaloes stand at (15-6, 6-4 Pac-12) and are eager to kick off the second half on a positive note against the Utah Utes (14-7, 5-5 Pac-12). Senior center Branden Carlson leads the Utes, averaging 16.7 points per game and 6.5 rebounds per game. Despite a tough road trip, Utah’s 11-0 record at the Jon M. Huntsman Center this year offers hope for a rebound.

Junior point guard KJ Simpson spearheads the Buffs with impressive averages of 19.2 points, 4.3 assists, and 5.3 rebounds per game. Recently named a late-season finalist for the Wooden Award, Simpson is crucial to Colorado’s success. Star freshman forward Cody Williams, who had a quiet game against the Cougars, will need to step up for the Buffs to secure a victory.

With a record of 1-5 in true road games this season, the Buffaloes face a challenging task. A week off may provide much-needed rest, but they must overcome their road struggles to triumph over the Utes. The matchup takes on added significance as both teams vie for a top-four seed and a first-round bye in the Pac-12 tournament.

In a high-stakes Big Ten matchup, the Ohio State Buckeyes (13-8, 3-7 Big Ten) faced off against the #14 Illinois Fighting Illini (16-5, 7-3 Big Ten) at Value City Arena on Tuesday, Jan. 30. The starting lineup for the Buckeyes featured sophomore guards Roddy Gayle Jr., Evan Mahaffey, and Bruce Thornton, fifth-year forward Jamison Battle, and sophomore center Felix Okpara. The Fighting Illini countered with guards Ty Rodgers, Terrance Shannon Jr., Justin Harmon, and forwards Quincy Guerrier and Coleman Hawkins. Ohio State entered the game on a challenging two-game losing streak, while Illinois boasted a two-game winning streak.

Illinois Head Coach Brad Underwood acknowledged the team’s demanding schedule, stating, “This is day sixteen for us on the road. I think we had nine games this month.”

The first half saw a competitive back-and-forth, with both teams exchanging leads multiple times. The Buckeyes maintained a field goal percentage above fifty, while the Illini struggled initially, shooting below forty percent. Despite the Illini’s early struggles, Marcus Domask led the team with eleven points, shooting fifty percent from the field. Roddy Gayle Jr. paced the Buckeyes with 11 points, hitting two-thirds of his shots. At halftime, the Fighting Illini held a 41-34 lead.

Gayle Jr. expressed confidence in the team’s improvement, stating, “We just had a high level of urgency going into the game.”

Ohio State started the second half slowly, allowing the Illini to extend their lead to 11 points at the 16:58 mark. However, the Buckeyes staged a comeback, narrowing the gap. Despite their efforts, the Illini secured their highest lead of the night at 56-44 with 14:34 remaining. The Buckeyes fought back, drawing fouls to preserve clock and potentially regain possession.

Ohio State guard Evan Mahaffey noted, “I think we see our improvements each day.”

In an attempt to mount a comeback, the Buckeyes focused on three-pointers, making only four out of twelve attempts in the entire game. The Illini also opted for long-range shots, with guard Terrence Shannon Jr. sinking a critical three-pointer at the 4:50 mark, bringing the score to 79-64. Despite the Buckeyes pulling within ten points with two minutes left, they couldn’t close the gap further. The game concluded with a final score of 87-75 in favor of the Fighting Illini.

Ohio State Head Coach Chris Holtmann acknowledged the team’s defensive struggles, stating, “We just have not been able to finish a defensive possession.” Despite statistical leads in the first half, the Buckeyes couldn’t maintain them. Terrence Shannon Jr. led the Fighting Illini with 23 points, while Jamison Battle led the Buckeyes with 21 points.
