Arkansas Dominates the Paint, Hands Missouri 13th Loss of the Season

The Missouri Tigers faced a tough challenge in the paint as they succumbed to a 91-84 defeat against the Arkansas Razorbacks on Wednesday at Mizzou Arena, extending their winless streak to 0-8 in conference play and marking their 13th loss of the season. The Razorbacks asserted their dominance in the paint, outscoring the Tigers 56-30 in that crucial area. Mizzou March Madness hopes lessen every week.

Fifth-year senior forward Makhi Mitchell showcased his prowess with an impressive 19-point performance, including five powerful dunks that proved challenging for Missouri’s defense, particularly in the first half where he notched 14 of his total points. Missouri head coach Dennis Gates lamented the team’s struggles with 50/50 balls and Mitchell’s ability to control the offensive glass early in the game. Keyon Menifield Jr. played a pivotal role for the Razorbacks, connecting with Mitchell for multiple dunks and contributing to Arkansas’ commanding lead.

Tramon Mark emerged as the leading scorer for Arkansas with 22 points, 14 of which were earned in the paint. Mark’s steals and fast-break points further widened the gap between the two teams. Arkansas forward Jalen Graham added 13 points, with the majority coming from inside the paint, while freshman guard Layden Blocker showcased his skills with 9 points, including a fast-break dunk that helped secure a 41-26 lead towards the end of the first half. Despite the loss, Missouri’s Tamar Bates led his team in scoring with 29 points, including 12 in the paint.

Bates acknowledged the team’s flawed strategy, noting that they were too focused on drawing fouls instead of seeking the right opportunities for shots. The Tigers received contributions from Connor Vanover and Aidan Shaw, who scored four points each in the paint. However, all seven of Vanover’s points were in the first half, and Shaw’s efforts came in the final minutes of the game. Missouri now faces the challenge of regrouping and refining their approach as they look to bounce back from this defeat in the upcoming games.
