Preview: The Birmingham Stallions are set to take on the St. Louis Battlehawks

Anticipation peaks as the Birmingham Stallions prepare to clash with the formidable St. Louis Battlehawks at Protective Stadium on Saturday afternoon. This showdown is poised to be the highlight of the season, with both teams boasting impressive records. While the Stallions have shone brightly across all facets of play, the Battlehawks, despite a stumble in week one against the Panthers, have emerged as a formidable force, eyeing their sixth consecutive victory.

Head coach Skip Holtz faces a pivotal decision regarding the starting quarterback position. Matt Corral, a former NFL third-round pick, brings exceptional arm strength and improvisational skills, while Adrian Martinez, the frontrunner for UFL MVP, showcases versatility, ranking second in rushing yards and delivering stellar passing performances. Holtz and his staff shoulder the responsibility of dissecting the Battlehawks’ defense to make the optimal choice.

The Stallions’ defense faces its sternest challenge yet, contending with A.J. McCarron, the linchpin of the Battlehawks’ offense. McCarron boasts the league’s best touchdown-turnover ratio, ranks second in yards, and excels in completion percentage, positioning himself as a contender for Most Valuable Player. Neutralizing McCarron’s aerial threat requires collapsing the pocket and applying pressure, enabling the defensive backs to capitalize on opportunities and force turnovers.

Beyond McCarron, the Battlehawks feature formidable talents in both the running and receiving departments. Jacob Saylors, a former Atlanta Falcon, ranks third in rushing yards, posing a significant threat with an impressive yards-per-carry average. In the air, Hakeem Butler leads the UFL in receiving, proving dominant and a prime target for McCarron, particularly in the red zone.

Both teams brace for a fierce battle on both offense and defense. The Stallions’ offense holds the key to establishing an early rhythm and driving the ball effectively, potentially securing a commanding lead. Attention centers on receivers like Deon Cain, whose performance could tilt the scales in favor of victory. With a chance to elevate their season to 7-0, the Stallions aim for an undefeated campaign, injecting an extra layer of excitement into the matchup.

Caitlin Clark Signs 8-Year, $28 Million Shoe Deal with Nike

The 2023-2024 NCAA women’s basketball player of the year and the 2024 first overall WNBA draft pick, Caitlin Clark, has inked a brand-new shoe deal with Nike, reportedly worth $28 million. She becomes just the third active WNBA player to have her own signature shoe, joining Breanna Stewart with Puma and Sabrina Ionescu (Elena Delle Donne, with Nike, would be the fourth player but she has recently stated that she will take a break from basketball).

Nike emerged victorious in the Clark sweepstakes, outbidding Puma, Adidas, and Under Armour. Although another company offered her a signature shoe, Nike presented her with the highest value. According to the Wall Street Journal, Under Armour was the only other company to propose a signature shoe, while Puma withdrew its offer upon learning of the price involved. Adidas’ offer was also nowhere close to Under Armour’s or Nike’s.

Before being offered the shoe deal, Clark was in talks to become the female face of Nike’s Kobe line, as she sported Iowa-colored Kobe 5s in the National Championship this year. Compared to her peers, this marks the largest shoe deal for a women’s basketball player in history. While the deal has not been officially announced yet, she wore Nike Kobe Protro ‘All-Star Game’ colorways during her preseason debut.

This deal comes at the heels of Clark’s legendary college career, during which she shattered the all-time NCAA scoring record previously held by LSU’s Pete Maravich. Additionally, she led her Iowa team to the National Championship, where they ultimately fell short 87-75 to the undefeated South Carolina Gamecocks. In total, she boasts over 30 awards and achievements, including being a two-time AP Player of the Year and a three-time NCAA season assists leader. Internationally, she also secured three gold medals for the US in the FIBA U-19 World Cup (2019, 2021) and the FIBA Americas U-16 Championship (2017).

As the first pick in the draft by the Indiana Fever, Clark received a 5-year, $388,056 contract for her rookie deal. However, fans are astonished by the value considering she had already earned over $3 million through NIL deals in college. The WNBA, in general, has operated under a hard cap ($1.46 million for the 2024 season), and players normally receive around 10% of the overall league revenue, hence the low value of the rookie deal.

The Call Took Eight Years: Astros Select Forrest Whitley

Photo Cred: Rich Schultz/Getty Images

With the 17th pick in the 2016 MLB draft, the Houston Astros selected right-handed pitcher Forrest Whitley from Alamo Heights High School in San Antonio, Texas. Coming out of high school, he was the top prospect in Texas and the 15th overall prospect in the country. Whitley had initially committed to Florida State University before signing with the Astros for a $3.15 million signing bonus.  Having showcased his talent on the under-18 national team and winning the U-18 Baseball World Cup in 2015. The Astros anticipated Whitley as a future ace when they drafted him.

He even threw a no-hitter during his senior year. Upon signing, Whitley joined the Gulf Coast Astros in the Gulf Coast League. It’s a rookie-ball league where started his minor league career. Despite a challenging start with a 7.36 ERA in four appearances (including two starts), Whitley demonstrated glimpses of promise with his command, tallying 13 strikeouts and only three walks in 7.1 innings.

After those four outings, he was transferred to the Greenville Astros in the Appalachian League. A rookie-ball league for high school prospects. He would conclude the 2016 season in Greensville. In his last four outings, all as starts, he recorded an impressive 3.18 ERA with 13 strikeouts. The year 2017 marked a breakout for Whitley. Beginning the season as the Astros’ No. 5 prospects, he was lights out. Across three minor league levels (A, A+, and AA), he boasted a 2.83 ERA over 23 appearances (18 of which were starts). Amassing 143 strikeouts across 92.1 innings. At just 19 years old, Whitley’s future seemed promising, but it was at this juncture that his fortunes took a turn for the worse.

Starting the 2018 season as the top RHP prospect and the No. 9 overall prospects in baseball. Whitley received a 50-game suspension on February 21st after failing an MLB-administered drug test. His first start didn’t come until June 8. During which he pitched four innings, surrendering one hit, and striking out five. He proceeded with seven more starts from June to mid-August, accruing a 3.76 ERA over 26.1 innings.

He started the next season in AAA but his performance was poor. He had an ERA exceeding 12 in eight games. By the end of the season, he had been demoted to three levels of the minors, finishing in the Arizona Fall League. Going from Triple-A to rookie ball, where he had started just three years prior, served as a harsh reality check for the pitcher. During this period, he suffered an injury that sidelined him, yet the Astros’ front office retained hope.

“He’s disappointed with how he’s performed, and I think this will be a good opportunity for him to take stock in where everything is and work with our pitching coaches and not be distracted by (pitching) 60 miles from his hometown,” then-Astros’ GM Jeff Luhnow said in an interview in 2019. “It’ll be a good opportunity for him. I think he’s mentally strong and I think he’s going to take this. He’s had setbacks before, and he’s made it through.”

Landing a spot on the 2020 40-man roster, Whitley was never called up and didn’t pitch during the 2020 season. Due to COVID-19, there was a cancellation of the minor league season in 2020. Returning for Spring Training the following season, Whitley was poised to play until encountering another setback. Experiencing discomfort in his right elbow, he was placed on the injured list once more. Eventually, he underwent Tommy John surgery and was sidelined for the entirety of 2021.

By the start of the 2022 season, he had returned and was ready to pitch, but he began at the bottom once more. Making one start for the Astros Blue team in the Florida Complex League, he allowed three runs over two innings. He then moved back up to single-A. He made two solid starts, allowing only one base runner over the two games. This performance earned him the call back up to AAA, but his struggles continued. He ended the 2022 season with an ERA of 7.09 in 40 innings.

In 2023, setbacks continued as he was diagnosed with a lat injury after eight games on the mound and 30 innings in AAA. This sidelined him for 3-4 months and effectively ended his season. Following this injury, the team decided to transition Whitley from the starting rotation to the bullpen. This is where he began the 2024 season and, although his appearances weren’t impressive, he was healthy: 7.20 ERA, 5.0 innings pitched, and eight strikeouts, giving up five hits, two walks, and three home runs.

With just five outings in the season, the front office saw all that they needed to. After eight long years, Forrest Whitley finally received the call he had been waiting for! On a team plagued by injuries, Whitley found a spot for himself. On April 14th, he was called up to the majors to make his debut, and he was on the mound in Houston facing off against the Atlanta Braves on the big stage just two days later!

He pitched in the ninth inning and secured the last two outs of the game, though he allowed a hit, one walk, and hit another batter. While he did not concede an earned run, Chadwick Tromp hit a two-RBI double on Whitley’s third pitch of the at-bat. This marked Whitley’s only appearance in the major leagues, as he was optioned shortly after the game to make room for Justin Verlander. Nevertheless, it was a moment he had awaited since being drafted almost 10 years earlier. Perhaps he will be called back up later in the year but, for now, we as baseball fans have seen our first glimpse of the 6’8 Forrest Whitley.

Celtics Command Cavs With Home Court Triumph 120-95

The Celtics burst onto the court, igniting a blazing 5-0 lead in the opening quarter fueled by Jaylen Brown’s effortless three-pointer and precision at the free-throw line. Despite a late surge from the Cavaliers, Morris Sr.’s buzzer-beating 26-foot three-pointer helped narrow the gap. Brown’s stellar performance amassed an impressive 15 points, propelling the Celtics to an early advantage.

In the second quarter, the Cavaliers struggled to keep pace with the relentless Celtics offense. A sharp three-point shot from Pritchard extended the Celtics’ lead into double digits early on, firmly solidifying their control for the remainder of the half. Despite efforts from Cavaliers stars Garland and Mitchell, who combined for 7 points, the team fell short in their attempt to halt the Celtics’ momentum.

Pritchard and Holiday added to the Cavaliers’ woes with five more points, leaving little hope for a late comeback. Though the Cavaliers fought until the final buzzer, with George Niang contributing four points from the free-throw line in the dwindling minutes, they ultimately succumbed to a resounding 25-point defeat, a stark contrast to their previous close encounter.

TSU is First HBCU to Introduce Collegiate Ice Hockey

Tennessee State University (TSU) President Glenda Glover and Director of Athletics Dr. Mikki Allen have proudly announced the appointment of Duanté Abercrombie as the inaugural head coach of the men’s hockey team, marking a historic milestone as the first head coach of a hockey program at a historically Black college or university (HBCU).

Expressing his enthusiasm for this groundbreaking opportunity, Abercrombie stated, “I am incredibly excited to embark on building this program, supported by God, my family, TSU students, alumni, and all those eagerly awaiting this moment. I firmly believe that one day, TSU will be recognized not only as a powerhouse on the ice but also as a program whose student-athletes leave a profound legacy on the world, enriched by the lessons learned at TSU.”

The journey towards establishing the men’s hockey program at TSU began in June 2023, when the university announced its plans to become the first HBCU to offer men’s hockey. Abercrombie’s appointment serves as a significant step forward in realizing this vision. The decision to compete against schools in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) and College Hockey Federation (CHF) underscores TSU’s strategic approach to laying the foundation for future success.

By engaging in competition with ACHA schools, TSU aims to emulate the path taken by institutions like Arizona State, gradually progressing towards Division I status. Similarly, competing against CHF schools, including familiar names like Auburn, Georgia, and Vanderbilt. This provides TSU with opportunities to showcase its talent to a broader audience, particularly in Nashville.

While TSU’s focus remains on building its men’s hockey program, there are plans to expand opportunities for women in the sport as well. According to Guerriero, TSU intends to eventually introduce a women’s hockey program. However, the addition of a men’s hockey team necessitates compliance with Title IX regulations, which mandate equitable opportunities for male and female athletes. Presently, TSU maintains Title IX compliance, but the addition of a women’s hockey program would require the establishment of another women’s team to maintain compliance.

This commitment underscores TSU’s dedication to fostering gender equity in athletics while pioneering new avenues for student-athletes to excel. In summary, Abercrombie’s appointment as head coach of TSU’s men’s hockey team heralds a new era of athletic excellence and inclusivity at the university. As TSU continues to break barriers and inspire other HBCUs, the establishment of its hockey program serves as a testament to its commitment to innovation, diversity, and the pursuit of excellence both on and off the ice.

Hartenstein emerged as a formidable force, single-handedly chipping away at the deficit with four quick points. However, it was Oubre’s clutch 3-pointer in the dying moments of the half that propelled the 76ers into their first lead of the night, concluding a fiercely contested first half with Philadelphia clinging to a slim 54-51 advantage. Returning from halftime with renewed determination, Philadelphia assembled their defensive prowess to stifle the Knicks’ offensive onslaught. Maxey’s acrobatic 27-foot jumper extended the 76ers’ lead into double digits for the first time.

They maintained their ascendancy until Anunoby’s timely three-point salvo restored dominance for the Knicks as the third quarter drew to a close. The final quarter witnessed a grueling battle for supremacy, with both teams exchanging possession in a relentless tug of war. Anunoby’s three-pointer narrowed the gap to a mere two possessions early in the quarter, setting the stage for a thrilling climax.

Brunson, exhibiting nerves of steel, rattled off five crucial points, including a pivotal jump shot and a dagger three-pointer with six minutes remaining. Brunson’s prowess propelled the Knicks into the driver’s seat. Despite Maxey’s heroic efforts to level the score at 111 with a clutch three-pointer, Hart’s three-pointer with just 25 seconds remaining swung the momentum decisively in the Knicks’ favor, securing a 3-point lead. With the 76ers resorting to fouling in a last-ditch attempt to salvage the game, the Knicks, unflappable in the face of pressure, calmly converted their free throws to clinch a thrilling victory.
