Dayton Leads Comeback to Edge Out Mustangs

In a nail-biting finish at Moody Coliseum, the University of Dayton Flyers edged past the SMU Mustangs with a thrilling 65-63 victory on Wednesday night. The win improved Dayton’s record to 5-2 for the season while dropping SMU to 5-3, marking a significant road win for the Flyers. The game, witnessed by notable attendee former President George W. Bush, showcased resilience and strategic play from both teams. Southern Methodist, with an impressive start, led the game for most of the match at almost 24 minutes. Their defense, barring a few slips, was holding firm.

In the first half, first-year guard Zhuric Phelps (from Duncanville High School) was a standout performer for the Mustangs. Dayton’s duo of DaRon Holmes II and Koby Brea turned the game on its head with their combined 42 points, each scoring at least 20. The game saw numerous lead changes, especially in the last 10 minutes, with SMU pulling ahead by five points with just over five minutes left. However, Dayton’s tenacious response, highlighted by a 10-0 run, turned the tide in their favor.

Brea’s career-high 22 points, including crucial baskets in the game’s dying moments, were pivotal for Dayton. He was well supported by Holmes, who added 20 points, showcasing an all-around performance with rebounds, assists, and blocked shots. After a shaky first half, Dayton’s defense tightened up in the second, significantly reducing Southern Methodist’s field goal percentage. The game’s climax was as dramatic as it gets. With Dayton leading by two, SMU had possession with just 3.3 seconds left on the clock.

Despite a valiant effort by the Mustangs, a shot at the buzzer by Phelps fell short, sealing Dayton’s victory. In the post-game interviews, SMU players Phelps and Keon Ambrose-Hylton reflected on the game’s intensity and the team’s need to improve. They highlighted the challenges posed by Dayton’s Holmes and the need for Southern Methodist to tighten their defense and rebounding going forward. Despite the loss, the game provided valuable lessons and insights as they prepare for their upcoming fixtures.
