New York Jets Sign RB Le’Veon Bell

The New York Jets have a new running back and his name is Le’Veon Bell.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter the New York Jets are signing RB Le’Veon Bell to a 4-year, $52.5 million deal, with $35 million guaranteed.

The two-time All-Pro will now join new head coach Adam Gase and second-year QB Sam Darnold in the Big Apple.

In what had already been an incredible evening with the news of the Odell Beckham, Jr. trade to the Cleveland Browns, Bell topped with his free agency announcement to the Jets.

Bell tweeted after the news broke,

Bell sat out the 2018 NFL season after refusing to sign his franchise tender of $14.5 million with the Pittsburgh Steelers opting to take his chances during free agency.

The running back sat out the 2018 NFL season in hopes that the Steelers would not franchise him for a third consecutive season, which ultimately proved true.

The pro-bowler, averaged of 128.9 total yards per game from 2013 to 2017, the highest for an NFL back over the first five seasons of a career.

During that span, he rushed for 5,336 yards and 35 touchdowns while catching 312 passes for 2,660 yards and another 7 scores.

According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the San Francisco 49ers made an eleventh hour push to try and sign Bell, but the Jets were able to secure the back with their final and best offer.

One of the great running back in Jets history in Curtis Martin, will now see a new generation of Gang Green attempt to duplicate his Hall of Fame successs in the form of Le’Veon Bell, who loved the former Jets star.

Bell will now be with the J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets.

Giants Trade WR Odell Beckham Jr to Browns

0

One of the most shocking trades in recent memory unfolded in the NFL on Tuesday night.

The New York Giants traded Odell Beckham, Jr. to the Cleveland Browns, per Adam Schefter of ESPN.

The Giants receive Browns S Jabril Peppers, their 2019 1st-round pick (No. 17 overall) and the Browns second 3rd-round selection.

In a move that rocked the entire National Football League, the Browns have instantly become the favorite in the AFC North with the addition of Beckham.

Browns GM John Dorsey and new head coach Freddie Kitchens provide second year QB Baker Mayfield one of the most dynamic weapons in all of football.

Beckham, a three-time pro-bowler, is reunited with former LSU teammate Jarvis Landry to create one of best duos at WR in the entire NFL.

In what has already been a dramatic off season for the Browns, with the addition of RB Kareem Hunt, now has become even more stunning with the addition of Beckham.

Beckham, the fastest WR to 5,000 receiving yards, brings a new dimension to the Browns offense with his dynamic playing ability. He provides the Browns the number one receiver target they have desperately coveted.

Needless to say the Browns are going for it and they might not be done just yet.

For now, Odell Beckham, Jr. is the newest member of the Cleveland Browns.

Professional Sports Leagues Content Distribution Models: Local vs. Regional vs. National

Why does the National Football League use a national television distribution model?  Why does Major League Baseball mostly use a local and regional television distribution model through their individual franchises?  Why does the National Basketball Association and the National Hockey League have somewhat of a mixed bag of national and local television distribution?  Why, finally, is Major League Soccer now pursuing a national-based television distribution model?

    There are three reasons why.

Amount of Games & Attention Span

Football is played every Sunday during the season, generally once per week with one Monday night and a second Thursday night game each week.  There are also some Saturday games during the holidays and the playoffs.  Football models more closely a popular television show like American Idol or America’s Got Talent or your favorite linear television show.  Baseball is played seven days a week with a team generally taking one day off here and there during the 162 game season.  Baseball models more closely your local news service.  It is played so often that it would not make sense to have it broadcasted every night as people’s attention spans would subside.  Baseball like other American professional sports leagues also utilizes social media and national television distribution for select games, ideally the seemingly more popular games between rivals, etc.

Soccer is like football in that they basically play once a week so it makes sense to model after a national television distribution similar to football.  Basketball and hockey have a mixed bag of distribution because all teams play two to three times per week so they want to reach national, local, and regional audiences.  It is interesting to see more leagues and teams utilizing social media and streamers to distribute content because that is where there customers are located.  Professional sports leagues and teams are hedging their bets by placing content in multiple places unlike what entertainment content streamers have been doing and where they are going, unfortunately

    Fan Bases & Demographics

Demographics, age, ethnicity, gender, and geographic location all provide data as to preferences in sports programming.  This data helps leagues and teams plan for better or the best distribution model with their fan bases.  For example, in soccer, the fans are generally younger and in major cities so they have a tendency to want to view content on streamers or social media platforms.  Baseball fans tend to be older and living in less populated areas where local and regional television distribution better reaches the consumer.

    Nature, Timing, & Engagement

Some of the differences in distribution models comes down the nature of the sport (its essence), the length of the match, and engagement.  Baseball is a pastoral game played in ballparks that can be enjoyed leisurely through conversation and experiences.  It is also the original analytical sport based around collecting and analyzing statistics.  Baseball, because of its pace and length (e.g., there is no clock in baseball), even if just psychologically as football games last generally just as long as baseball games (3 hours +/-), attracts a certain personality—you either love or hate the game of baseball.  Although baseball is consumed leisurely it does not mean its fans are leisurely fanatic about their sport and team.

However, football fans get bursts of excitement that keep them engaged on each play.  Football is like a boxing title fight, some dancing with big hits.  Baseball is like a dance that is performed over a period of time.  Basketball and hockey are very similar in their breaks and flow.  Soccer is in some sense the perfectly-timed sport because it is played in two halves without timeouts.  The clock keeps running.

Interestingly and possibly unsurprisingly, the pace and flow of professional sports also determines commercial breaks, dollars, and distribution.  Advertisers love breaks because they can fill that time with their own paid content.  As an example, YouTube wonderfully performed the advertising dance during the 2017 and 2018 World Series and it looked like linear television was being watched on YouTube by ad placement.

Going forward, it will be very interesting to watch what happens as distribution grows internationally by way of internet companies like AT&T purchasing entertainment companies like Time Warner, Disney purchasing Fox entertainment assets, and Comcast purchasing Sky in Europe.  There also seems to be a rush to go the platform route through streamers and social media.  In the end, all has changed, but nothing has changed—content is only as good as the people it reaches and each American professional sport has its own model based on the aforementioned.

Raiders Acquire Steelers WR Antonio Brown; Brown To Be Highest Paid WR In NFL

The Oakland Raiders have acquired Antonio Brown from the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Raiders will send a 3rd and 5th round pick to the Steelers in exchange for the nine-year wide receiver, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Brown, 31, will receive a reworked contract that will make him the highest paid receiver in the NFL.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Brown will now receive $50.125 million over the next three years and can earn up to $54.125 million with incentives.

The trade, which can not be finalized until the league year starts next week, brings closure to what has been a protracted ordeal for the Steelers and Brown.

Brown has gone back and forth in the media for several months chronicling his reasons for wanting out of Pittsburgh.

He requested a trade in February after posting his goodbyes to Steelers fans on Instagram saying it was,

‘Time to move on and move forward.’

After meeting with owner Art Rooney II to ‘clear the air’ back in February, Brown finds himself a new home in Oakland with owner Mark Davis.

The Raiders, who will play their final season in Oakland, will be moving to Las Vegas in 2020. Adding Brown provides a big name that will help move tickets when the team arrives in Nevada, creating additional buzz for the team.

Jon Gruden will be going into his second season with the team as head coach, while new general manager Mike Mayock will be going into his first.

Mayock’s first major move as GM sees him bring in a WR who has an NFL record six-consecutive 100 catch seasons.

During that span, Brown has amassed over 9,100 yards and in 2018 had a career high 15 touchdowns.

The All-Pro will bring explosiveness and big play ability to a Raiders offense that after, trading away Amari Cooper to the Cowboys, became stagnant.

Last year the Raiders finished 18th in the NFL in receiving yards, and their 19 touchdowns ranked 24th in the league.

Brown’s addition instantly upgrades an offense that lacked big play ability and gives QB Derek Carr a lethal downfield weapon.

In 5 career games against the Raiders, Brown has averaged nearly 102 yards per game receiving with 1 touchdown.

A seven-time pro-bowler, Brown will now have the opportunity to build a new relationship with Carr. Carr, 27, was ecstatic about the trade as seen on Twitter.

Brown’s previous relationship with Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger has been well-documented.

While the on-field working relationship was productive, Brown and Roethlisberger were never seemingly on the same page off the field.

This led Brown to say on Twitter that Roethlisberger had a, ‘owner mentality.’ Brown doubled down on those comments recently on HBO’s The Shop, hosted by LeBron James, where Brown said Roethlisberger acted like the, ‘owner.’

For the Steelers, JuJu Smith-Schuster becomes the number one target coming off a career high 111 catches and going to the pro-bowl for the first time.

Smith-Schuster’s production primarily was a by-product of Brown being opposite him. With Brown gone, it remains to be seen how Smith-Schuster will handle his role as the primary receiver.

For now, the Raiders have their new number one receiver in a four-time All-Pro with a career 834 catches and over 11,000 yards receiving. Numbers that would put Brown in Canton if he were to retire today.

Brown was thought to be traded to the Buffalo Bills late Friday evening, but Bills GM Brandon Beane nixed the rumor saying that the deal that attempted to bring in Brown didn’t, ‘make sense.’

Late Saturday though the Raiders were able to make a deal that made sense to the Steelers and now Antonio Brown has a new home donning the silver and black.

NFL Regional Combine Wrap Up: Who Showed Up, Who Shined, And What’s Next

The path to the 2019 NFL Draft continued Saturday in Kansas City at the NFL Regional Scouting Combine.

The 2nd Annual NFL Regional Scouting Combine Invitational took place at Arrowhead Stadium, home of the Kansas City Chiefs, inside the University of Kansas Health System Training Complex.

31 of college football’s best were invited to participate in front of NFL teams, scouts, and personnel. Most of the invited 31 players showed, with only 7 not participating in Saturday’s workouts.

Players looked to standout in front teams and scouts in attempt to improve their draft stock as they head into their pro days, which begin next week.

Participants in today’s combine represented schools from the NAIA, Division Three, Division Two, FCS, and FBS levels respectively. Players went through similar combine drills as those who participated in the NFL Scouting Combine last week in Indianapolis.

Players arrived in Kansas City on Friday to go through medical testing and classroom work, with on-field drills taking place Saturday morning and lasting through the afternoon. Combine results for on-field drills were not made available to the media, though players and scouts were made aware of their individual results.

Full results of the participant’s workouts in Saturday’s Combine will be made available in the coming days.

There were several standouts during Saturday’s workouts in one of the final opportunities for players to impress teams looking to find deep sleepers for this year’s draft.

One of the hallmarks of the Regional Combine is the opportunity for small-school players to showcase their skills with the hopes of catching the eyes of a team that otherwise would not have taken notice.

One of the players to take full advantage of his opportunity was Bowie State (DII) QB Amir Hall.

Hall had an impressive workout in front of scouts showing his strong arm and athleticism throughout Saturday’s drills. The 2017 Black College Football Player of the Year displayed impressive arm strength and accuracy during throwing drills also. Hall led all of DII Football with over 4100 yards passing and finished 5th with 31 TD passes.

The Bowie State product was last seen on the field at the 2019 NFLPA Collegiate Bowl where he too impressed scouts with his poise and accuracy from the pocket. Speaking with Kevin Gray of Sports Radio America, Hall stated that he wants to continue,

“…improving on my footwork, that was really the main thing, I came out of college really trying to work on, and I’m working on it now, and its getting better each and every day and I think I’m going to showcase it on my pro day.”

Hall led Bowie State to the 2018 CIAA (Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) Championship breaking the CIAA record for passing yards and TD’s in a season.

Another small-school standout during today’s Combine was secondary player Chris Johnson out of North Alabama. Johnson showed outstanding footwork and balance during DB drills while displaying natural hands catching the football.

During his last two seasons Johnson had 8 interceptions, along with 47 tackles in 2018. The former first-team All-Gulf South Conference performer ran well in the 40 yard dash and displayed natural hips during defensive drills. Johnson said of his performance today,

“…just getting out here in front of the scouts again, any exposure that you can get and put on a show is good exposure, I think it was important…I have the natural skills to play free [safety]…I think consistency is what they want to see from a small school guy…and show them that I can do that.”

Other standouts included WR Tyron Johnson out of Oklahoma St., DT Fred Jones of Florida St., and DE Kyle Phillips of the University of Tennessee, of which we’ll have additional coverage of.

Scouts and personnel from several teams including the Detroit Lions, New York Giants, Washington Redskins, New England Patriots, etc. were on hand for Saturday’s combine workouts.

Teams looking for diamonds in the rough were treated to some outstanding combine performances as they look to improve their teams during this year’s draft.

It was an outstanding day of workouts for these NFL hopefuls as they continue their path to the NFL Draft.

The 2019 NFL Draft will take place Thursday April 25th – Saturday the 27th in Nashville, TN.

The Internet Highway is the Future for Profits in Distribution

Photo Courtesy of the Associated Press

Previously this author wrote about Bundling to Change the Future. This article is about how distribution is still queen and wearing the pants in the form of the carrier that provides the digital broadband internet highway to distribute content.

According to CNBC, “Broadband is a higher-margin business than TV, which has become a near-term net loser for new bundlers of programming.”

In the entertainment, media, and sports industry, there have been two recent simultaneous changes.  The first is with bundling where streamers are becoming like the traditional cable providers bundling their services with other service providers versus cable providers bundling individual networks or television shows.  The second is that internet broadband carriers have purchased content providers and/or created streaming platforms to distribute content using their own broadband internet services.  The end result is that these larger companies are hedging their bets by having two revenue streams, with one (the broadband internet services) proving to be more profitable over television programming or bundling.

This is nothing new of course.  Companies have always looked for ways to adapt, change, and increase profits.  What is interesting and what will be interesting going forward is whether regulation will eventually cut-off the digital relationship between broadband providers and streaming platforms and specifically the act of the broad-banders buying the content distributions (e.g., AT&T-Time Warner—to date it has been allowed and is a sign of the changing industry, economy, and consumer needs).  One thing the United States Justice Department and the courts have always frowned upon is the big guys buying up the little guys or competitors to remove competition using anti-competitive activity to control the marketplace.  To date, the mergers have not been challenged successfully.

In this economy, however, where consumers are cancelling their bundles and cable television in general, Phoenix, Arizona-based Cable One might be the model of the future.  The company’s leadership has stated clearly that, what now seems logical and common sense in hindsight, people are not cancelling their internet when they cancel their cable television so an investment in broadband internet services would be wise.

Most of the changes in content distribution today comes down to economics.  It is cheaper and easier to sell a digital broadband internet highway in the age of a free marketplace free of net neutrality regulations when compared to creating the content to be distributed.  Moreover, where a company owns both the content and the internet highway, all the better for their bottom-line as the company controls content, costs, and access.

In some sense, the packaging of talent in the agency business has taken a similar model in distribution where the internet carriers have packaged content distributors together.  The future model, at least for smaller companies unable to purchase content providers, might be to provide and invest in the thing that carries that content, the internet, because until the internet is replaced it is how all of us receive the content we watch.  As gas runs the car, so the internet runs the content.

Edge of Extinction: Who’ll be the first to go in 2019 NFL QB class?

    0

The 2019 NFL quarterback class hasn’t generated the buzz of last year’s prospects at the position. However, there are plenty of franchise quarterback candidates and future starters in the group.

Even so, no NFL draft is an exact science, meaning these quarterbacks can prove doubters wrong. Of course, the right team must select the correct signal caller, plus have a system in place to succeed. In today’s NFL, most first QBs play right away instead of waiting and learning the position. With this in mind, SportsRadioAmerica.com examines three of the top quarterback prospects this year.

    Kyler Murray

Despite his size, Murray has dynamic arm strength. He’s an extremely explosive quarterback athlete who makes up for his lacks of ideal height with high football IQ. He flashes the touch to make all NFL throws and has the “wow” power to penetrate deep down the field. In his college offense, the majority of his decisions were made pre-snap.

When Murray resorts to scrambling around, he’s at his best. He needs to work on his progression reads on a consistent basis, as he’s quick to scramble. He’s an electric runner, but NFL defenses will adapt. Overall, Murray has the tools to be an NFL starter, but I have concerns about his durability. As Baker Mayfield and Russell Wilson have shown, shorter QBs can succeed in the NFL.

    Dwayne Haskins

Haskins is the most pure pocket passer in this year’s draft. He has outstanding arm strength, poise and production. He can drive the football into tight widows and has a beautiful touch on his deep ball. Haskins has a tendency to get a little aggressive at times and throw into coverage he shouldn’t.

His biggest issue arises when he’s forced to move off his spot in the pocket. Throwing on the run, his accuracy is average. He’s used sparingly on designed QB runs. Overall, Haskins has the necessary tools to win games from the pocket and must learn to use his legs to escape pressure, lest he become a standing target.

    Drew Lock

Standing at 6’4” and 225 lbs., Lock has the size and ability the NFL dreams of. He owns a quick release on his throws. He’s tremendous at placing the ball between coverage of a corner and safety versus. He also has one of the best pump fakes in this year’s draft class.

Lock gets sloppy with his footwork at times, which causes him to throw balls high over receiver’s heads. He’s very aggressive, which leads to explosive plays, but frequent turnovers. You’ll have to take the good with the bad with Lock. While his footwork may be sloppy, he’s nimble enough in the pocket to escape pressure there. He’s an excellent athlete. Overall, Lock needs to polish his footwork and tone down turnovers, but he has a special skill set and tremendous upside to lead a team.
