The top-seeded Nuggets, who have never been this close to the NBA Finals in their 47-year history, were led by Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who scored 12 of his 17 points in the second half. Denver is making its seventh playoff appearance in a row, and the title game is now only one win away. The seventh-seeded Lakers, who hadn’t lost three straight games since early February, were led by Anthony Davis, who had 28 points and 18 rebounds. Los Angeles’ protracted, frantic push since the trade deadline has finally peaked against the Nuggets, who have won five straight playoff games.

After going 0 for 13 in the series, James hit three 3-pointers, and Austin Reaves added 23 points and seven rebounds. However, with 13 points, Rui Hachimura was the only other Lakers player to reach double figures, and the Lakers couldn’t overcome the Nuggets’ balanced effort down the stretch. In NBA history, no club has come back from a 3-0 series disadvantage.

Xander Bogaerts played 1264 games with the Red Sox from 2013-2022. He opposed them for the first time this season. The four-time all-star and five-time Silver Slugger award winner signed a massive 11-year contract with the San Diego Padres this offseason worth $280 Million. The native of Aruba was a part of the Red Sox organization since he was a teenager. When his contract with San Diego expires, he will be 41 years old.

Red Sox President of Baseball Operations Chaim Bloom failed to extend Bogaerts in the winter before the last year of his deal, reportedly offering him just a 4-year, $90 Million contract. Bogaerts played a role in winning two World Series in Boston, in 2013 and 2018, and was one of the faces of the franchise for the last five years. The San Diego Padres were happy to add Bogaerts to their star-studded lineup, which already featured all-stars Juan Soto, Manny Machado, and Fernando Tatis Jr.

Despite high expectations coming into the season, the Padres have struggled in the first two months. The main problem for the 2022 National League runner-up has been the inability to drive in runners in scoring position. Boston’s lineup hasn’t skipped a beat without Bogaerts; they currently are third in MLB in runs scored.

Right in the heart of the Boston batting order sits third baseman Rafael Devers, who the Red Sox extended the contract this offseason. Devers signed the largest contract in the history of the Boston Red Sox, at ten years, $313 Million. Devers and Bogaerts had secured the left side of Boston’s infield for five seasons together, and the two have a great relationship. He told the Boston Globe that the two still talk regularly.

The Padres and Red Sox had a three-game series over the weekend, with Blake Snell on the mound for San Diego and James Paxton making his second Red Sox start. Bogaerts enters the series with a batting average of .275 with six home runs. He is a player who currently has the most extra-base hits in the majors (25) while sitting in the Top 5 for total bases.

Nuggets Take Game One

With 34 points, 21 rebounds, and 14 assists, Jokic earned his sixth triple-double of the playoffs, propelling the Nuggets to a 1-0 series lead. Denver defeated the Lakers in the first round of the Western Conference finals for the first time, thanks to Jokic’s hot start and strong finish and Jamal Murray’s 31 points while suffering from an ear infection. After a poor start, Anthony Davis finished with 40 points and ten rebounds, and James had 26 points, 12 rebounds, and nine assists.

Rui Hachimura guarded Jokic in the fourth quarter, allowing Davis to crowd the area and make it difficult for the Nuggets’ big man to dominate. However, it was insufficient.

As the seconds ticked away, he buried one of two, and James misfired from three. The Nuggets are now up 2-0 after a 108-103 loss Thursday night at Ball Arena.

The Heat is comfortable being the No. 8 seed in the Eastern Conference, having qualified for the playoffs via a Play-In Tournament in which they trailed by three points with (what could have been) three minutes left in their season. They dispatched the top-seeded Milwaukee Bucks in five games and immediately took home-court advantage from the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

For Miami, no. The Heat will be visiting for the tenth time overall, the seventh time in the previous 13 years, and the third time in the last four years. On Wednesday, they will play Game 1 in Boston.

“Take a bow LSU women’s basketball. A player on your team mocked those who died on 9/11 by comparing it to a Porsche.” Another fan wrote, “Disgusting. I know people who still struggle to sleep at night because of what they did in the war after 9/11. She thinks it’s a joke.”

The University quickly caught wind of the backlash and controversial lines trending on social media. LSU released a statement the following day apologizing on Flau’jae’s behalf. The statement said, “She expressed sincere remorse for any possibility of a misunderstanding and immediately took the video down.”

The Minuteman offense tallied 16 hits Wednesday to beat in-state foes Stonehill (10-32) 10-6. UMass (12-30) wasted no time taking the lead, scoring four runs in the bottom half of the first inning. Nolan Tichy homered to give UMass a 3-0 lead after just three plate appearances. It was Tichy’s team-leading 10th home run of the season. Jake Given then drove home Mike Gervasi to chase Stonehill starting pitcher Max Bulport from the game after recording just two outs.

The Minutemen added two runs in the second inning and another in the third to give starting pitcher Scott LeSieur a comfortable 7-0 cushion. LeSieur had a brilliant afternoon on the mound for the Minutemen, throwing six scoreless innings while striking out seven. The senior left-hander from Marietta, GA, made the most of his third start, allowing six hits and walking none. UMass led 8-0 when LeSieur left the game.

LeSieur’s scoreless outing was preserved in the fourth inning when CF Kevin Skagerlind made a diving catch in the right-center gap. The play was on ESPN’s Top 10 Plays of the Day. Skagerlind also had a big game at the plate, going 3-4 and stealing a base. After allowing a run in the seventh, UMass ran into serious trouble at the top of the eighth.

The first three hitters in the inning reached base from Stonehill, and the Hawks managed to create productive outs to close the gap to 8-3 with two outs. Stonehill hit three consecutive singles to score 8-6 before the Minutemen finally got out of the inning. Jack Peters hit a two-run single to give UMass some insurance in the bottom of the eighth before Jackson Harrigan shut the door on Stonehill in the ninth to seal the UMass victory.

76ers take 3-2 series lead over the Celtics

After narrowly dropping Game 4 in Philadelphia, the Boston Celtics had a golden opportunity to take control of the series on Tuesday night on their home floor. The Celtics entered the game as 7.5-point favorites before losing to their division rivals 115-103. Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid reached the 30-point mark as Philly led for the rest of the game after taking a 13-10 lead.

The Sixers shot 50% from the field and 40% from beyond the arc. Maxey connected on six of his 12 three-point attempts to pace the Philadelphia offense. After scoring over 40 points in Games 1 & 4 of the series, James Harden took a different approach, only shooting the ball eight times. Harden still managed to put 17 points on the board while recording ten assists and grabbing eight rebounds.

The Celtics did not have the same shooting night as their opponent. Boston made 33 of their 83 field goal attempts, good for 39.8%. Their offense has lived and died by the three-pointer all year, and they died by it on Tuesday, shooting 12-38 from a distance. The Celtics will always take open threes given to them, created by driving to the paint to force the defense to crash before passing to the corner. Al Horford stood in the corner for most of the night and did not make any of his seven three-point attempts.

Jaylen Brown had a solid night in the losing effort, scoring 24 points on 9-16 shooting. Boston trailed by nine points at halftime. But came out flat in the third quarter. Philadelphia extended their lead to 16 by the start of the fourth. The 76ers outrebounded the Celtics 49-36 and made 23 of their 27 free throws in the victory.

The series moves back to Philadelphia on Thursday for a pivotal Game 6. The two teams split the two previous meetings in Philadelphia this series. Boston needs to win to avoid the end of their season. In a similar spot last season, the Celtics trailed the Bucks 3-2 in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. Jayson Tatum scored 46 points in Milwaukee to force a Game 7. The Celtics could use a brilliant performance from Tatum or Brown on Thursday. The winner of the series will play the winner of the Heat/Knicks.

Garrett Edwards Out For the Season

0

No. 1 LSU has had a rollercoaster season from their bullpen. After starting the season strong, it has been an up and down ride ever since. Right-handed pitcher Garrett Edwards is out for the rest of the 2033 season with a torn UCL. Edward’s injury happened on April 7, during the fifth inning of the Tiger’s matchup against South Carolina. The next day, head coach Jay Johnson commented on the status update of Edward’s injury.

“Through a preliminary evaluation with our trainer it was about as positive as it could be,” Johnson said. “We’re hopeful that it is not serious and that we will have him back soon. I am not a doctor, never going to pretend to be a doctor. We’ll get them further evaluated when we get home.”

Edwards underwent Tommy John surgery last week on a torn UCL. A Tommy John surgery will repair the ulnar collateral ligament inside the elbow. Following the surgery, Edwards wore a brace during this past weekend’s series against SEC rival Alabama. However, Garrett has not played since his injury against South Carolina and is ruled out for the rest of the season. Edwards is now on the road to recovery.

Prior to the injury, Edwards had emerged as one of the go-to options out of the bullpen for LSU posting a 1.93 ERA in 23 1/3 innings pitched. This is now the second straight season; the former Pitkin pitcher has battled with injuries. In 2022, Edwards appeared in just nine games with an ERA over six while dealing with a leg injury that limited his time on the mound.

This news comes as a blow to the Tigers. Before the injury of Edward, two other pitchers, Grant Taylor, and Chase Shores, had also been ruled out for the season due to injury. The coaching staff is now relying on bullpen members to carry the load. LSU now must rely on other bullpen members to carry the load of the pitching staff as the season ends.
