WKU Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams Lose in “100 Miles of Hate” Rivalry

Not every school has a rivalry as notorious as Texas vs. Oklahoma or Duke vs. North Carolina, but it does not diminish the significance of Western Kentucky’s matchups against Middle Tennessee State. They both have those games circled on their calendars! Let’s dive deeper into this storied feud, which takes center stage in one of the final games of the season for both the WKU men’s and women’s basketball teams.

The History of Hate 

The rivalry between the two teams earned the moniker “100 Miles of Hate” due to the distance between the campus towns of Bowling Green and Murfreesboro. Mostly recognized as a football rivalry, the two teams have been competing against each other since 1914. WKU and MTSU have maintained their competition through various conference moves, transitioning together through the Ohio Valley, Sun Belt, and C-USA conferences, and facing off against each other in all sports.

Crucial Blow for the Hilltoppers 

Western Kentucky was on a five-game winning streak, which included a 23-point victory over the Blue Raiders and a win against top-seeded Louisiana Tech. They aimed to continue steamrolling their opponents in this rivalry game, seeking to secure the first seed in the conference in their final home game this season.  

However, Middle Tennessee State’s Jared Coleman-Jones had a standout performance, leading both teams in points (20), rebounds (11- tied with teammate Justin Bufford), and assists (four). MTSU emerged victorious 74-72, rallying with a 40-point second half to erase a two-point deficit from the first half. WKU’s struggles on the road continued, which may potentially jeopardize their chances of a deep run in the C-USA… This home game could’ve been crucial in narrowing the gap in the Conference USA standings.

Speaking of which, these two teams face off once again today at 3:00 PM ET for the last time! The season series is currently split one-all, so this conference semifinal matchup will determine the victor in the heated rivalry.

Lady Toppers Could Not Manage the Upset 

The WKU Lady Toppers also clashed with Middle Tennessee on February 24th alongside their male counterparts. The Lady Raiders maintained an undefeated record in conference play (13-0) and possessed an overall record of 23-4. They arrived at Bowling Green pursuing another dominant win. At the beginning of the month, they hosted the Tops and secured a remarkable 80-48 triumph.

An upset would have been remarkable for Western Kentucky, as they are on a three-game skid while simultaneously aiming to maintain their position in the top half of the C-USA standings. However, WKU failed to find a solution against the Blue Raiders, as they couldn’t even score 10 points in two of the four quarters. Despite a solid defense, MTSU toppled Western 59-41.

Even though dual wins would have greatly benefited Western Kentucky, MTSU managed to win the rivalry this time around. While this rivalry might not bring about the same sense of significance for everyone, it holds immense importance for the students who despise seeing our teams lose to any opponent, especially a Blue Raider!

Colorado State Defeats San José State in Mountain West Tournament First Round

In a competitive battle between Colorado State and San José State, the Rams emerged victorious with a 72-62 win in the opening round of the 2024 Mountain West Tournament on Wednesday. Neither team showcased its best form leading up to the game. San José State arrived with a six-game losing streak, concluding the regular season with a 9-22 record. On the flip side, Colorado State had appeared in the top-25 rankings several times during the season but slipped to seventh in the Mountain West after four losses in their last seven regular-season games.

These recent challenges have raised questions about CSU’s NCAA tournament prospects, but a strong showing in the conference tournament could settle the debate. While Colorado State managed to secure the victory, their performance left room for improvement, allowing the Spartans to stay competitive throughout the game. The pivotal moment came with the score tied at 56-56 and just under five minutes remaining, when CSU embarked on a 16-6 run to close out the game. San José State struggled, shooting an abysmal 1 for 7 in the final 4:51, finishing below 25% from three-point range.

The Rams weren’t significantly better from beyond the arc, shooting 6 for 19, slightly above 31%. However, CSU shot over 50% from the field overall, led by senior forward Joel Scott, who tallied 18 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field and 6-of-8 from the free-throw line. Surprisingly, senior Joe Palmer came off the bench as the second-leading scorer for Colorado State, hitting four of his five three-point attempts to finish with 14 points in the win.

For San José State, Alvaro Cardenas and Myron Amey Jr. led the team in scoring with 18 and 17 points, respectively. Despite their double-digit contributions, it was a challenging game for Amey Jr., shooting 7 for 20 overall and 1 for 8 from three-point range. The Spartans struggled from deep, facing tough defense that resulted in four of their shots being blocked by the Rams.

The loss concluded San José State’s season with a 9-23 overall record and a 2-16 record in the Mountain West Conference. Next up for Colorado State is a matchup with No. 23 Nevada in the quarterfinals on Thursday night at 8 p.m. ET. CSU aims to avoid a season sweep against the Wolf Pack, having lost both previous meetings this season. A victory in this game would likely solidify the Rams’ spot in the NCAA tournament, pending the selection committee’s decision.

Since then, former Ohio State head coach Chris Holtmann was dismissed on Feb. 14 and succeeded by assistant coach Jake Diebler. This change at the helm ignited a winning streak for the Buckeyes, commencing with a victory over unranked Michigan State on Feb. 25. Before Holtmann’s departure, Ohio State’s prospects for competitiveness in the Big Ten Tournament seemed daunting and far-fetched.

Nevertheless, the Buckeyes’ triumph against No. 2 Purdue in Columbus on Feb. 18 ushered in a new era for Buckeye basketball. Players such as Bruce Thornton and Jamison Battle have showcased markedly improved performances compared to their time under Holtmann. Since that pivotal game, Ohio State has only suffered one loss, securing a stronger standing in the Big Ten tournament—an outcome that seemed improbable in February.

Presently, the team boasts a four-game winning streak, with each victory enhancing their chances of advancing to the Big Dance. However, the road ahead is challenging. Ohio State must secure multiple wins in the Big Ten tournament to entertain hopes of participating in March Madness. Their initial test comes against the Iowa Hawkeyes. The Buckeyes hold a 2-1 all-time record against the Hawkeyes in the Big Ten Tournament and are 33-18 all-time in Big Ten tournament contests.

The last time Ohio State claimed the Big Ten tournament championship was in 2013, when the tenth-seeded Buckeyes defeated the eighth-seeded Michigan State Spartans. Last year in the Big Ten Tournament, the Buckeyes were bested 80-66 by top-seeded Purdue in the semifinals following victories over Iowa and Michigan State. Despite their commendable performance in the previous Big Ten tournament, Ohio State failed to secure a spot in March Madness last year.

Their last appearance in the Big Dance was during the 2020-21 season, concluding with a 21-10 overall record and a 12-8 standing in the Big Ten, albeit falling to Oral Roberts in overtime during the second round. The Buckeyes’ most recent Final Four appearance was during the 2011-12 season, during which they achieved a 31-8 overall record and a 13-5 standing in the Big Ten. Since the 2012-13 season, every March Madness campaign for Ohio State has resulted in elimination during either the first or second round.

Despite Diebler’s recent successes with the Buckeyes, the path to March Madness remains formidable. The team must secure victories in the Big Ten tournament merely to be considered for a berth. Prediction: Ohio State defeats Iowa but falls short of advancing past the second round of the Big Ten tournament, effectively extinguishing their chances of participating in March Madness.

In the wake of Louisville’s defeat to North Carolina State in the ACC tournament on Tuesday night, the university promptly parted ways with Payne, the head basketball coach, as early as Wednesday. Payne, during his brief two-season tenure at Louisville, amassed a record of 12-52 (.188) overall and 5-35 (.125) in the ACC. Specifically, his team posted a 4-28 (2-28) record in 2022-23 and an 8-24 (3-17) record in 2023-24.

Mick Cronin has seen success at every coaching stop in his career, whether at Murray State, Cincinnati, or UCLA. With multiple NCAA Tournament appearances at each institution, he has been named Conference Coach of the Year at least once with every program. Notably, Cronin has ties to Louisville, having served as an assistant under Rick Pitino for two seasons. Despite making 14 trips to the Big Dance, he has advanced past the initial weekend only four times. Nevertheless, in every non-COVID season with the Bruins, including a Final Four appearance in 2021, UCLA has been a strong contender. However, this year they are on track to miss the NCAA Tournament entirely.

If there were an ideal candidate available, it would be Scott Drew. Drew possesses all the qualities sought after by the program, showcasing proven success in tournaments, adept recruiting skills, a talent for player development, a history of turning programs around, and an exciting brand of basketball. Drew has one NCAA Championship to his name. During the search for Chris Mack’s replacement in 2022, Bob Valvano reported that “If you talked, Scott Drew would listen.” Unfortunately, discussions of Drew joining the Cardinals did not gain significant momentum, resulting in the Cardinals hiring Kenny Payne instead.

Kelvin Sampson’s coaching career spans decades, starting in 1979 as a graduate assistant at Michigan State. With over forty years of experience, Sampson has guided four different teams to the NCAA tournament, with two making it to the Final Four. While Sampson’s coaching expertise and track record are undeniable, the likelihood of him moving to Louisville remains slim. Sampson has been with Houston for over a decade, consistently securing top-5 rankings and deep runs into March Madness. Houston has reached the Sweet 16 or beyond for four consecutive seasons. Despite the challenge of enticing a coach away from such a successful program, Sampson has substantial reasons that make a move to Louisville improbable.

Sunday, we will have the 68 teams ready to compete in March Madness. Some spots in the big dance may already seem locked, the conference tournaments present a golden opportunity for bubble teams to notch significant wins and bolster their resumes. They can also be a double-edged sword, potentially dashing hopes of teams on the cusp as unexpected contenders may rise and secure a bid through a conference tournament title.

A recent example of this upset potential unfolded as Drake triumphed over Indiana State to seize the Missouri Valley Conference title. Before this game, many bracketologists, such as ESPN’s Joe Lunardi, had Indiana State pegged for the NCAA tournament, while Drake was on the wrong side of the bubble. We may be looking at two MVC teams entering the big dance, altering the landscape for bubble teams like St. John’s, Colorado, and Virginia, who’s at-large bids could be in jeopardy.

With dwindling opportunities for bubble teams to make their case to the selection committee, the conference tournaments become crucial for punching a ticket to March Madness. Currently, 11 teams have clinched their spots in the NCAA tournament by winning their conference championships, leaving 21 more champions to be crowned before Selection Sunday commences at 6 p.m. ET.

That said, let’s delve into the major six conferences and their tournaments, and predict who might emerge victorious. While college basketball boasts more than these main conferences—ACC, Big 12, SEC, Big East, Pac-12, and Big 10—notably, we haven’t seen a team outside these six conferences claim the championship in over three decades. The last non-big six conference champion was UNLV in 1990 when they were part of the Big West. Since then, every NCAA champion has hailed from one of these major conferences, suggesting this trend might continue. With this in mind, let’s explore the tournaments.

ACC

The ACC tournament kicked off yesterday, and in the initial three games, we didn’t witness any upsets. I anticipate this trend to persist for most of the tournament. There’s a chance for Clemson to secure an upset win over Virginia in the Quarterfinals, provided they navigate past Boston College in the second round as expected. However, all signs point to a third showdown between top-seeded UNC and their arch-rivals, Duke. In this trilogy, it might be time for the Blue Devils to retaliate against their in-state rivals. It’s a tough feat to beat a team twice, let alone thrice, but I believe Duke Head Coach Jon Scheyer could have a solid game plan to help his team clinch their 24th ACC title.

Big 12

Following the ACC, the Big 12, arguably the deepest conference in the nation, has already begun its tournament. The Big 12 seeks to secure at least eight, possibly nine spots. They boast top teams like Houston, Baylor, Iowa State, and Kansas. In a second-round matchup, we’ll witness two teams near the bubble—TCU and Oklahoma—duking it out. Both teams currently hold spots in the NCAA tournament, but a win for one over the other could solidify their position while spelling doom for the other. I foresee Baylor emerging victorious. With a three-point shooting percentage hovering just under 40%, combined with the size of their starting five, Baylor stands as a strong candidate for the national championship.

SEC

Similar to the Big 12, the SEC boasts teams with strong tournament resumes. Teams like Alabama, Tennessee, Auburn, and Kentucky all have legitimate reasons to believe they could win the NCAA tournament this year, and the same holds for their conference tournament. Apart from these four contenders, I envision Florida making waves in the tournament, especially after facing one of the lower-ranked SEC teams in the second round. If they overcome this challenge, they will face Alabama, a team they defeated by 18 points just over a week ago. I don’t foresee Florida or any other team in this tournament slowing down the offensive of Kentucky. Riding on a five-game winning streak, including victories over Tennessee and Alabama, I believe we’ll witness Coach Calipari collect his seventh SEC tournament title.

Big East

Initially, I sought to avoid the easy pick of UConn and focus on other contenders like Creighton, Marquette, or even bubble teams such as Villanova and Seton Hall. With deeper inspection of the bracket, I realize I must acknowledge the inevitable. The defending national champions have shown even more prowess this year, and winning a Big East title would likely serve as sweet revenge for their early exit in last year’s tournament.

Pac-12

Here we are at the end of an era for the Pac-12. This conference, known as the Pac-10 or Pac-12, has been a constant presence, a proud bastion of West Coast college athletics. It feels surreal that the conference of champions will undergo a significant change. The final tournament and the season lacked the intrigue of other conferences. Similar to the Big East, one team towers above the rest—Arizona. While Washington State upset Arizona twice during the regular season, I don’t anticipate seeing them in the final, especially after losing two of their last four regular-season games.

Big 10

Lastly, we come to the Big 10, where I fear I may sound like a broken record as I pick another top-seeded team for the third consecutive conference. I’m betting on Purdue and the likely back-to-back Wooden Award winner, Zach Edey. Pairing one of the best big men seen in years with a team that shoots over 40% from beyond the arc appears to be a winning combination. While a potential quarterfinal matchup with Michigan State could prove challenging, I trust in the experience and talent of the Boilermakers to navigate through anything thrown at them during this championship week.

USC Women’s Basketball defeats Stanford in Pac-12 Tournament

The No. 5 USC Women’s Basketball team secured a remarkable victory, toppling the first-seeded Stanford with a commanding 74-61 win in the 2024 Pac-12 Tournament final. This victory marked their second tournament championship, showcasing the Trojans’ prowess on the court. McKenzie Forbes emerged as a standout player for USC, leading the charge with an impressive 26 points, ultimately earning the prestigious title of Pac-12 Tournament Most Outstanding Player.

Rayah Marshall made a significant impact as well, achieving a double-double with 10 points and a season-high 18 rebounds for USC. Kayla Padilla added 13 points to the Trojans’ winning tally. Despite USC’s lower overall shooting percentage compared to Stanford, with the Trojans shooting 39.7% (25-63) and Stanford at 42.4% (28-66), USC’s strengths in other areas secured the win. Taking advantage of Stanford’s turnovers proved pivotal for USC, as they converted 21 points off Stanford’s 11 turnovers.

USC also dominated the boards, outrebounding Stanford with an impressive 48 rebounds compared to Stanford’s 28, providing the Trojans with ample opportunities for second-chance points and control over the game’s tempo. Both teams showcased their prowess from beyond the arc, with USC holding a slight edge. The Trojans sank nine three-pointers (9-24), while Stanford managed seven (7-18), allowing USC to gain momentum during crucial moments and remain competitive throughout the game.

Despite a challenging night for JuJu Watkins, who tallied 9 points, she achieved a significant milestone by becoming the second-highest scorer in a single season at USC with 810 points. She trails behind Cheryl Miller with 814 points. Forbes’s exceptional performance earned her the title of Pac-12 Tournament Most Outstanding Player, while Watkins secured a spot on the Pac-12 All-Tournament Team, solidifying USC’s dominance in the tournament.

The Trojans’ triumph over Stanford not only marks a memorable victory but also cements their status as a force to be reckoned with in collegiate women’s basketball. USC looks ahead to the upcoming NCAA Tournament with confidence, aiming to build on this impressive performance and make a strong run for the national title. Can they make a March Madness run?

Haney will likely be the favorite due to his exceptional boxing ability and dominant performance the last time we saw him in the ring. Additionally, his perfect 31-0 record further adds to his credibility. Meanwhile, Garcia aims to regain his confidence after getting TKO’d by Gervonta Davis last April. This marked his first defeat in pro boxing.

Winning the UEFA Champions League is the pinnacle of achievement for any soccer club, cementing their place in history among the greatest. Last season, Manchester City claimed the title with a dominant performance, embarrassing Real Madrid in the semifinals before beating Inter Milan in the finals. As the stage is set for another thrilling tournament, numerous formidable contenders are vying for glory. 

Man City remains a force to be reckoned with, boasting the same skill that propelled them to victory last season. With a talented roster and impressive form, they are poised to defend their title and etch their name in Champions League history once again. Following dual 3-1 victories over Copenhagen, they have advanced to the quarterfinals with a commanding 6-2 aggregate score.

Real Madrid has experienced a resurgence with the addition of star midfielder Jude Bellingham. However, despite their undeniable talent, the team’s core is young and faces the challenge of replacing the departed legend Karim Benzema. Injuries to key stars Eder Militao and Thibaut Courtois further complicate their quest for victory, although their youth could prove to be their greatest asset. Madrid narrowly advanced to the quarterfinals after a tense 2-1 victory over RB Leipzig, despite a 1-1 draw in the second leg. 

Meanwhile, Inter Milan, last season’s finalist, finds themselves in a promising position for another deep run. With the advantage of a favorable group draw, their path to success appears relatively straightforward. This was highlighted by a solid 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Round of 16 matchup.

Meanwhile, perennial powerhouses such as PSG, Barcelona, Arsenal, Napoli, and Bayern Munich continue to wait in the wings. Paris Saint Germain boasts Kylian Mbappe, arguably the world’s finest player, and valuable Champions League experience. However, their journey is not without obstacles, compounded by the departures of Neymar and Lionel Messi as well as the uncertainty surrounding Mbappe’s future. Nevertheless, they have clinched a spot in the quarterfinals with back-to-back 2-1 victories (4-2 overall) over Real Sociedad. 

Barcelona is also facing internal upheaval, as club legend and manager Xavi will not return to the club next season. Despite this, their rich history and resilience make them a tough team to count out. They were deadlocked in a 1-1 draw with Napoli in the first leg, but they came out strong yesterday with a 3-1 win. Gli Azzurri almost pulled off an upset against the current third-placed La Liga team, but it was not to be.

Arsenal was seeking to maintain their momentum up, currently just two points behind Liverpool and one behind Man City in the Premier League. However, the Dragoes from Portugal, FC Porto, held a 1-0 lead in the first leg of their game. Thankfully, in yesterday’s second leg, the Gunners drew the overall matchup 1-1 with a 1-0 win. They will be advancing to the quarterfinals after winning in a penalty shootout 4-2.  

Lastly, Bayern Munich overcame an initial 1-0 defeat to Lazio in their journey to the quarterfinals. They secured a 3-0 second leg victory and a 3-1 overall result. The Champions League may represent their sole realistic chance at winning a trophy this year, as they have fallen behind in the Bundesliga and have long been eliminated from both the DFB-Pokal and the DFL-Supercup.

Let’s evaluate the playoff runs of the eliminated NFC teams and assign grades to their performances. We have also previously ranked the playoff teams in tiers as well as rated the runs of the eliminated AFC teams. 

Dallas Cowboys – F 

For the third consecutive year, the Dallas Cowboys’ season ended in disappointment as they were eliminated in the Wild Card round against the seventh-seeded Green Bay Packers. Once viewed as contenders heading into the playoffs, their early departure raises significant questions about the team’s future. The Cowboys’ failure to capitalize on their talent results in an F grade for their lackluster postseason performance.

Los Angeles Rams – B 

The Los Angeles Rams displayed resilience and competitiveness throughout the playoffs, despite their narrow 23-24 loss in the opening round against the Detroit Lions. With notable regular-season victories and a Super Bowl win two years prior, the Rams proved to be formidable opponents. Although they were unable to advance past the first round, their performance and competitiveness deserves a solid B grade.

Philadelphia Eagles – F 

The Philadelphia Eagles’ playoff campaign was marred by underperformance, reaching its lowest point with a lackluster 9-32 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card round. Despite a strong 11-1 start to the season, including victories over the Chiefs, Bills, Cowboys, and Dolphins, the Eagles struggled in the second half. The dismal conclusion to the season led to questions about coaching and team dynamics. Their disappointing postseason showing also merits an F grade.

Green Bay Packers – A+ 

The Packers had a season filled with highs and lows, but they displayed remarkable resilience in the playoffs. Despite facing setbacks, they secured the seventh seed in the playoffs and had an impressive 48-32 victory over Dallas in the Wild Card round, fully showcasing their potential. Although they fell short in a closely contested 21-24 game against the eventual NFC champions San Francisco 49ers, their playoff run exceeded expectations. The Packers demonstrated determination and skill, earning them an A+ for their playoff efforts.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers – B+ 

The Buccaneers’ playoff journey ended on a positive note despite a 23-31 loss to Detroit in the divisional round. With promising performances from quarterback Baker Mayfield and a decisive victory over Philadelphia in the Wild Card round, the Buccaneers demonstrated their potential for the future. Their playoff journey earns them a solid B+ grade.

Detroit Lions – A 

The Detroit Lions’ playoff run resembled a fairy tale for their long-suffering fan base. Bolstered by remarkable offseason moves and a talented rookie class, the Lions surpassed expectations with victories over Los Angeles and Tampa Bay in the first two rounds of the playoffs. They managed to secure themselves a spot in the NFC Championship game. Although they fell ultimately short against the 49ers with a narrow 31-34 defeat, their remarkable journey warrants a well-deserved A grade. 

Within the unpredictability of the NFL playoffs, each team’s performance narrates a unique tale. Some will enter the upcoming season with confidence, while others will face questions to address in the offseason. Nonetheless, the playoffs serve as a reminder of the thrill and drama that define football.
