USA Defeats Canada to Open the T20 Cricket World Cup

The T20 Cricket World Cup is now in its sixth day, with action across 12 games so far. Starting off the tournament, we saw a repeat of the first recorded cricket game in the history of the sport. Thunderstorms affected the weather in the days prior, and there was some trouble selling tickets. Nevertheless, a crowd of 6,000 fans gathered at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas, Texas to watch a North American rivalry unfold on the cricket pitch. Fans of all ages and backgrounds cheered on the American and Canadian squads.

Both teams are a melting pot of various nationalities and backgrounds. American flags and colors filled the stands, alongside India and Pakistan jerseys. Many South Asian Americans showed off their love for the game, even for the USA national team! Rival Canadian fans also appeared in significant numbers, and the diversity of the players and spectators highlighted the game’s global appeal. Even then, the game had a uniquely American atmosphere to it, with chants of “USA” echoing throughout the crowd.

Milestones Hit, Records Broken

For the first time, America proved its cricketing might to the world. They chased down an impressive 194 runs from Canada, signaling to the rest of the group that they shouldn’t be taken lightly. Aaron Jones was the star of the June 1 evening, scoring 94 runs not out. His 10 sixes were the joint second-most in T20 World Cup history, trailing only the legendary West Indian Chris Gayle. He was rightfully awarded Player of the Match for his outstanding performance.

Canada scored 194/5 in 20 overs, but the US chased it down in 17.4 overs with a score of 197/3. This marked the third-highest T20 World Cup run chase. The match also witnessed the US’ highest T20I partnership as well. Andries Gous and Jones amassed 131 runs off 58 balls. Jones reached his 50 in just 22 balls, the fastest-ever by any American. Notably, the US set a new record for the fastest century partnership in any Men’s T20 World Cup game, achieved in just 42 balls.

First Innings

Canada Did Not Back Down

It appeared Canada’s strategy was to attack from the outset. Only two of their seven batters on Saturday night had a strike rate under 100. Openers Aaron Johnson and Navneet Dhaliwal accumulated 43 runs off the first five overs of their innings. After Johnson’s dismissal, Dhaliwal picked up the pace following a slow start. Nicholas Kirton (51 off 32) and Dhaliwal (61 off 44) then formed a crucial 62-run partnership, emerging as the team’s top scorers. Even after losing four wickets, wicketkeeper Shreyas Movva and Dilpreet Bajwa maintained the run scoring. Movva, previously averaging 13.67 with a strike rate of 102.50, delivered his career-best T20 performance. His 16-ball 32 not out, alongside Bajwa’s 5-ball 11, concluded Canada’s innings at 194/5 in 20 overs.

The US’ Fielding Was on Point…

The American effort on the field kept fans’ hopes alive. Steven Taylor started by stopping a surefire four by Dhaliwal to end the fourth over. Jasdeep “Jessy” Singh effected a runout four overs later to remove Pargat Singh after a brief stay at the crease. Captain Monank Patel had a stumping opportunity that could have removed Dhaliwal even earlier. Aaron Jones made a diving effort to end the 14th over, keeping a possible Kirton four to only two runs. Though two runs were scored on the last ball of the 17th over, the fielder made a fast throw to hurry the runners.

Gous, a South African-origin player, almost removed Shreyas Movva before his run rampage started. He was a little late tracking the ball in the air, resulting in a missed catch opportunity. Former US captain Steven Taylor managed the second American runout on the field, removing Bajwa to end the 19th over. Patel was on the receiving end of both successful attempts, successfully whipping off the bails each time.

…but the Bowlers Need to Be Better

Ali Khan, usually a star bowler for the US, struggled in this game. He conceded an expensive 41 runs in four overs (10.25 economy). He did, however, manage to remove the dangerous Kirton at a time when the run rate was dropping. In the field, Khan had a misfield that allowed an extra run to the Canadians.

Former New Zealand star Corey Anderson was dynamic in the first innings. His experience proved valuable as he took the wicket of Navneet Dhaliwal on his first delivery. He nearly dismissed Movva in the same over, fielding a ball off his own bowling and hitting the stumps. However, Movva safely reached the crease at the non-striker’s end despite Anderson’s effort. Anderson’s three overs ended at 1/29 (9.66 economy), and he also caught Kirton off Khan’s bowling.

Indian-born spinner Harmeet Singh was the standout US bowler, with figures of 1/27 in four overs (6.75 economy). Jessy Singh and Saurabh Netravalkar (another former USA captain) both had economy rates of 8.00, helping to control the game. Steven Taylor’s one-over part-time off-spin had a rough start, but he limited the Canadians to three runs off his last three balls after conceding two sixes. Shadley van Schalkwyk, also originally from South Africa, finished with figures of 0/34 in three overs (11.33 economy) after a decent first over that went for six runs.

Second Innings

Canada’s Relentless Pursuit Continues

Canadian top bowler Kaleem Sana opened the second innings by dismissing Steven Taylor lbw (leg before wicket). It was a dream start for the Maple Leafers, who managed to limit the US to only 10/1 in two overs. Gous and Patel struggled to connect with the ball early on. While Sana’s second over went for 14 runs, USA did not fully awaken until the ninth over. Up to that point, they were teetering at 48/2 in eight overs. The eventual pair that formed a third-wicket century partnership, Gous and Jones, struggled to have a strike rate above 100. Patel was removed for a-run-a-ball 16 by Guyanese-origin player Dilon Heyliger.

USA Lets Loose!

Despite all the pressure that Canada placed, 33 runs off the ninth and 10th overs brought the Americans almost level with Canada’s position after 10 overs. Andries Gous and Aaron Jones then ramped up the pressure, scoring 10, 15, and 20 runs in the next three overs. This was just a prelude to what followed. The pressure intensified in a crucial 14th over, where Guyanese-origin player Jeremy Gordon made a series of mistakes.

In total, Gordon allowed a whopping 33 runs! Three wides and two no balls resulted in five extra balls and six extra runs. Three sixes and two fours were also struck, propelling Gous and Jones to 64 and 63 runs respectively. What’s more shocking about this unexpected turn of events was that Gordon had a solid first two overs, conceding only 11 runs. That was the turning point the Americans needed. What once was 69 runs required off 42 balls became only 36 runs needed off 36 balls! Jones finished just six runs away from triple figures (hitting a 40-ball 94), and Gous eventually departed for 65 off 46.

Canada Will Have to Do Some Soul Searching…

Kaleem Sana may have wrapped up his four overs by picking up a wicket and only allowing 34 runs, but his colleagues weren’t as fortunate. Gordon wasn’t brought back after that fateful 14th over, ending with figures of 0/44(3). Captain Saad Bin Zafar basically faced a similar fate. After only giving up nine runs in his first two overs, he conceded 33 in the next two to finish 0/42(4). Just like Steven Taylor was asked to bowl an over, Pargat Singh yielded 15 runs off his off-spin.

The worst bowler of the game was Nikhil Dutta. His 19-run ninth over marked the beginning of the US blitzkrieg. He seemed to bounce back by taking a wicket and giving up six runs in his next over. However, he faltered in the over where the US sealed the deal, giving up 16 runs in four balls. In his over, Gordon appeared to have taken Gous’ wicket, but he had overstepped the bowling line. That resulted in a no-ball that granted Gous and the Americans a momentary reprieve before he perished three balls later. Dutta also had a chance to take Jones’ catch, but he missed his opportunity. Despite Heyliger’s stranglehold on the US, bowling 1/19 in three overs, he was not given a chance to finish his full quota. The Maple Leafers conceded 19 extras, accounting for the third-most runs accumulated for the US’ batting.

A Lot to Look Forward To!

The United States will need to maintain their impressive form to advance to the next round, as their competition will only get tougher. The Americans faced Pakistan today, Thursday, June 6th, in a thriller of a match. Group matches against India and Ireland are still ahead. However, this win against Canada was a significant start. It provided momentum for the American side, while the atmosphere of the game showed that cricket can continue to gain traction and grow in the United States. An exhilarating run chase exemplifies the kind of excitement cricket can bring.

Dawgs Advance to Super Regional for the First Time in 15 Years

Following an extra-innings thriller on Sunday night, the University of Georgia Bulldogs baseball team has clinched a spot in the super regional for the first time since 2008. It’s a significant milestone for first-year coach Wes Johnson’s squad. Despite being heavy favorites to advance in the regional tournament, the Bulldogs encountered formidable challenges. It made their journey to the super regional all the more memorable.

The Bulldogs kicked off their regional campaign against the #4 seeded Army team. They expected to handle business smoothly. However, Army came out swinging, securing an early 2-1 lead in the first inning. Despite being deadlocked at 4-4 with Army through five innings. The Bulldogs rallied in the bottom of the sixth to take a 7-5 lead. Yet, their pitching struggles persisted. Georgia allowed Army to tie the game in the eighth inning.

UGA ultimately clinched a narrow 8-7 victory, despite their favored status. In their matchup against the two-seeded UNC Wilmington, the Bulldogs showcased their prowess. UGA dominated the game from start to finish. Despite surrendering eight hits, the Bulldogs stifled UNC Wilmington’s offense, limiting them to just two runs while exploding for 11 runs themselves.

Facing off against Georgia Tech in the final, the Bulldogs initially trailed 2-1 after the first inning but fell behind further with a four-run inning from Georgia Tech. However, they refused to go quietly. UGA staged a late-game comeback fueled by the long ball. Solo home runs from Tre Phelps and Kolby Branch in the eighth and ninth innings knotted the game at 5-5. Despite a tense bottom of the ninth inning where Georgia Tech loaded the bases, the Bulldogs held on, It sent the game into extra innings. UGA seized control in the 10th inning, scoring three runs to secure an 8-6 victory, clinching their spot in the super regional.

Although the Bulldogs faced pitching challenges throughout the tournament, their resilience and ability to overcome adversity were evident. To progress further, they’ll need to maintain their offensive momentum and shore up their pitching. This hard-fought victory propels the Bulldogs into the super regional for the first time in over 15 years UGA will square off against the 10-seeded NC State Wolfpack in Athens. The upcoming best-of-three series determines which team earns a spot in the College World Series in Omaha.

After a hitless streak spanning 14 at-bats, Mookie Betts broke through with a leadoff homer to left field against the Rockies Austin Gomber, giving the Dodgers an early 1-0 advantage. Following suit, Freddie Freeman launched a solo shot to center, doubling the Dodgers’ lead to 2-0 in the first inning. Starting pitcher Geno Stone and a trio of relievers combined to limit the Rockies to just five hits, securing a 4-0 victory for the Dodgers (38-23) over the Rockies (21-37) in the series finale at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California.

Although the Rockies claimed their first win at Dodger Stadium since October 2022 with a 4-1 opener victory on Friday, the Dodgers dominated, outscoring them 8-1 for the remainder of the series. The Rockies’ struggles at Dodger Stadium continued as they dropped to a dismal 4-12 over the past two seasons when playing there. Gomber (1-3) labored through three innings, needing 79 pitches and surrendering three walks in addition to five hits and two homers. It marked Gomber’s shortest outing of the season, following 14 combined innings where he allowed only one run in wins against the San Diego Padres and Oakland Athletics.

Stone (6-2) delivered five shutout innings with six strikeouts, conceding only four hits and two walks. This victory marked Stone’s second consecutive win after pitching a seven-inning shutout against the Mets in a 3-0 win on May 28 in New York. Following a series loss to the Diamondbacks and a sweep by the Cincinnati Reds, the Dodgers bounced back by sweeping the Mets and winning two of three against the Rockies.

Freeman went 1-1 with three walks, a solo homer, two RBIs, and two runs. Miguel Rojas contributed with a 1-3 performance, driving in a run. Dodgers relievers struck out five batters and allowed just one hit over four innings. With this win, the Dodgers extended their lead in the National League West to 6.5 games over the Padres.

Despite collecting only six hits, one home run, and one RBI in the first two games of the series, Ezequiel Tovar struggled in the series finale, going 0-4 with two strikeouts for the Rockies. Ryan McMahon managed a 1-2 performance with two walks, while Charlie Blackmon went 1-4. Following a 4-2 homestand against the Phillies and Guardians, the Rockies stumbled on the road, dropping to 8-23 with the two losses to the Dodgers, while remaining rooted in last place in the NL West with a 21-37 record.

The Rockies will return home for a three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds (26-33) starting Monday. Left-handed pitcher Andrew Abbott (3-5, 3.29 ERA) will take the mound for the Reds, while right-hander Ryan Feltner (1-4, 5.46 ERA) will start for the Rockies. Meanwhile, the Dodgers will enjoy a day off on Monday before heading to Pittsburgh for a three-game series against the Pirates (27-32). Throughout the regular season, the Birmingham Stallions faced significant challenges and emerged as one of the top teams in the UFL. Being comfortable in uncomfortable situations will ultimately be the key to securing victory. Star wide receiver Deon Cain could also be the x-factor, as he is unstoppable when the ball comes his way. It is simply a matter of winning the line of scrimmage and finding the hole in the defense. If these two can find a connection from the jump, there is no telling how far the Stallions can go when the season is on the line.

Conversely, there is no better opportunity for the former Atlanta Falcon, Carlor Davis, to regain momentum as the league’s best defensive player. The lights will be bright, and the stakes will be high; if Davis shifts the game in favor of Birmingham, executives will be in a position to hand him the award unanimously. In fact, Davis boasted his best game of the season in week two against Michigan. He finished the contest with two tackles for loss and two sacks in a battle that came down to the final second.

With an eye towards rejuvenating their coaching staff, the Cavaliers are actively pursuing a range of candidates to fill the void left by Bickerstaff’s departure.

They are eyeing Kenny Atkinson and James Borrego. Both have significant coaching experience. Atkinson is currently serving as an assistant with the Golden State Warriors. He was head coach of the Brooklyn Nets from 2016 to 2020. Atkinson compiled a record of 118-190 and guided the team to one postseason appearance. The Birmingham Stallions bid for a perfect season came to an end with a frustrating nine-point loss to the San Antonio Brahmas at the Alamodome. The defeat was particularly hard to swallow for MVP hopeful Adrian Martinez. He struggled to find his rhythm throughout the game. Despite accumulating 267 total yards and a lone passing touchdown, Martinez’s performance was marred by 14 incompletions and his third interception of the season.

Despite the setbacks, the receiving duo of Marlon Williams and Jace Sternberger showcased their skills for the Stallions. Williams led the pack with five receptions for 40 yards. Sternberger excelled at tight end, amassing 110 yards and a touchdown. Defensive coordinator John Chavis’s game plan failed to reach its full potential. The game of cricket is popular all around the globe. England and many former British colonies (India, Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and the West Indies) notably see the most action across the world. While it has yet to truly catch on in the United States, that is set to change today! The 2024 T20 Cricket World Cup arrives in the U.S. and West Indies from today, June 1st to the end of the month (June 29th). The Twenty20 format brings excitement to an age-old game, with batters only having 20 overs or 120 balls to score as many runs as possible. Showcased in the Indian Premier League (IPL) this season, scoring is at an all-time high, highlighting the unpredictability of the format. Many of the world’s top cricketers will suit up for their countries in an attempt to win one of the game’s biggest international trophies.

Stadiums and Tournament Information

16 matches will be hosted by the United States, split between Florida, Texas, and New York. The remaining 41 matches will be hosted by the West Indies. The semifinals will take place in Trinidad and Tobago, with the final taking place in Barbados. Several high-profile matchups, all from Group A, will take place in the United States. India and Pakistan will face off on June 9th at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in Long Island, New York. It’ll be one of the most highly-anticipated showdowns of the entire tournament.

A record 20 countries will battle it out for supremacy, split into four groups of five teams. The first group stage will feature each team playing every other team in their group once, similar to the FIFA World Cup. The top two teams from each group then advance to the Super Eight stage, where they will be divided into two groups of four. Each team will then play the other three teams in their group. The top two teams in each Super Eight group will advance to the semifinals, with the winners facing off in the final at the end of June. Let’s take a deeper dive into each World Cup group.

Group A: USA Witnesses High-Profile Cricket

Group A features perennial cricket powers India and Pakistan going against challengers Ireland, Canada, and the host nation United States. The Indian team features world-class bowlers such as Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, and Jasprit Bumrah. India also features elite batters, especially at the top of the order. Captain Rohit Sharma is one of the game’s best opening batters, and he will be joined by long-time star Virat Kohli. Yashasvi Jaiswal, Suryakumar Yadav, and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant are three explosive, T20-ready hitters to always keep an eye out for.

India’s archrival Pakistan will be led by captain Babar Azam, alongside power-hitting all-rounders Imad Wasim and Shadab Khan. The Pakistani bowling unit is set to be pace-heavy, featuring the always ferocious Shaheen Shah Afridi and veteran Mohammad Amir. Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf, and keeper Mohammad Rizwan will also be key figures for the side. Ireland has always been a scrappy side in the T20 World Cup, having made it into the Super Eight stage in 2009 as an Associate nation. After becoming a Full Member nation in 2017, they even reached the Super 12 in 2022. Captain and opener Paul Stirling will lead the way, with the Adair brothers (Mark and Ross) also featuring for the Irish. Gareth Delany, George Dockrell, and Josh Little will help in challenging India and Pakistan for a top-two spot.

The North American Brethren

Canada, making their T20 World Cup debut, is led by captain and all-rounder Saad Bin Zafar. The Pakistani-Canadian cricketer brings experience, batting, and bowling for the relatively young Canadians. The U.S. and Canada will be underdogs to India, Pakistan, and even Ireland. However, the United States recently pulled off an improbable series win against Bangladesh and has an upset win against Ireland in 2021 that almost resulted in a 2-0 series win.

Group B: Two Old Rivals and Three Upstarts

Group B similarly features two top teams and three teams vying to challenge them for a spot in the knockout stage. Australia is fresh off an ODI World Cup championship, winning it last year in India after defeating the host nation in the final. Travis Head scored 137 runs to chase down India’s target of 240 runs in just 43 overs. Long-time all-rounder Mitchell Marsh will captain the Aussies, with some of the other big names including David Warner, Pat Cummins, and Glenn Maxwell. Star bowler Mitchell Starc (a star contributor for 2024 IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders) will be joined by Josh Hazlewood and Adam Zampa.

Australia’s Ashes rival England will be their biggest competition in the group. England won the most recent T20 World Cup in 2022, with Australia winning the previous tournament in 2021. Captain Jos Buttler will lead the way for the defending champions, alongside Will Jacks, Phil Salt, and Jonny Bairstow at the top of the batting order. One person who we are all looking forward to is Jofra Archer. He will make his return to the English national team after more than a year of being sidelined with injuries.

Three Experienced Associate Nations

England’s geographic rival Scotland will also be a feisty contender to advance out of the group. Michael Jones and Brad Wheal are two players with prior World Cup experience who’ve made a return for the Scots. They managed to upset the West Indies in the 2022 T20 World Cup and in the 2023 ODI World Cup Qualifier. Richie Berrington will serve as captain, while Mark Watt and George Munsey round things up in terms of form and experience.

Oman should also not be underestimated, as eight members of their 2021 T20 World Cup team return this year. Additionally, those who participated in the recent ACC Premier Cup finals team also keep their place. Batting all-rounder Aqib Ilyas was named captain, while former captain Zeeshan Maqsood also returns to the team. Both serve as reliable all-rounders. The team’s top bowling options include different styles from Bilal Khan, Kaleemullah, and Fayyaz Butt. The opening pairing of Kashyap Prajapati and Naseem Khushi have contrasting styles (steady anchor, power hitter) that will balance things out. Wicket-keeper batter Pratik Athavale should help in bolstering the lower-order.

Finally, Namibia makes their return to the T20 World Cup after advancing to the second group stage in 2022. They went unbeaten in the ICC’s T20 Africa Qualifier, led by impressive all-rounder Gerhard Erasmus. The bowlers are led by spinner Bernard Scholtz and pacer Jan Frylinck, with assistance from former South African international David Wiese. There might be a little disappointment that Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton was left out despite scoring a century in just 33 balls against Nepal. That being said, this fairly young roster still has the potential of new talent being discovered through this tournament.

Group C: Three Island Countries Face Off!

Moving on to Group C, West Indies, New Zealand, and Afghanistan will all be contenders to advance. They are joined by the newcomers from Uganda and Papua New Guinea.

The West Indies are co-hosting the tournament along with the United States and are one of the most successful T20 teams. They’ve previously won two T20 World Cups, tied for the most all-time along with England. Rovman Powell will captain the side, while Alzarri Joseph will be the vice-captain. The West Indies have many big hitters, with Johnson Charles and Brandon King taking the top-order spots. Veterans Andre Russell, Romario Shepherd, and Shimron Hetmyer bolster the rest of the batting order. Debutant pacer Shamar Joseph will be must-see TV on the bowling side. The West Indians will look to delight their home fans and compete for a title after failing to advance to the Super Twelve stage in 2022.

One of their biggest competitors in the group is New Zealand. A semifinalist in 2022 and runner-up in 2021, the Black Caps look to make another run for the title and win their first T20 World Cup this year. Kane Williamson will lead the way as captain for New Zealand, while fellow veterans Tim Southee and Trent Boult will serve as the team’s top fast bowlers. Youngster Rachin Ravindra and vet Matt Henry look to bolster the Kiwis as they make their T20 World Cup debuts. Other notable vets include Devon Conway, Daryl Mitchell, and Glenn Phillips.

So Much Young Afghan Talent

Afghanistan has climbed up the cricketing ranks in the last few years, developing many stars to compete against the world’s best. Rashid Khan is one of the game’s top spin bowlers and will captain the Afghans. Rahmanullah Gurbaz will serve as the team’s wicketkeeper as well as an opening batter. Both players play for some of the world’s best cricket clubs in the Indian Premier League.

At one point, the Afghans were known to produce numerous spinners, but they’ve recently produced fast bowlers such as Naveen-ul-Haq and Fazalhaq Farooqi. Wicketkeeper batter Mohammed Ishaq makes his T20 World Cup debut after promising showings in international youth cricket. Afghanistan has a very good shot to upset the West Indies or New Zealand in a bid to advance to the Super Eight stage, especially with the services of Mohammad Nabi and Najibullah Zadran. One point of contention is that 26-year-old opener Hazratullah Zazai is a standby player and not in the 15-man roster. In 2019, Zazai hit Afghanistan’s highest individual score of 162 not out in 62 balls, signifying his potential with the bat.

Two of the Lowest-Ranked World Cup Teams

Papua New Guinea makes their second appearance in the T20 World Cup after first participating in 2021 during COVID complications. Winning the East Asia-Pacific Qualifier Regional Final against Japan, Assad Vala will captain the side. He will be assisted by all-rounder Charles Amini. The island nation features multiple dual-threat contributors with bat and ball, including Norman Vanua and Sese Bau. Tony Ura, the country’s only centurion and leading run-scorer, will lead from the front as an opener. While PNG shouldn’t be taken lightly, they will have a tough road ahead against more experienced competition.

Similarly, Uganda makes their T20 World Cup debut, qualifying out of Africa with a win over regional power and Full Member Zimbabwe. The Zimbabweans are the lone Full Member to not qualify for the World Cup, despite the expansion to 20 teams. Brian Masaba leads the side along with his vice-captain Riazat Ali Shah. The Ugandans also feature 43-year-old Frank Nsubuga, as well as many other players with a decade or more of international experience. Ugandan top scorer Simon Ssesazi and top wicket-taker Henry Ssenyondo will try to add to their respective tallies. While Group C will likely be tough sledding for them, their best chance of a World Cup victory could come against PNG. Both teams will look to make their mark on the biggest world stage.

Group D: The Potential “Group of Death”

Moving on to Group D, perennial powerhouses South Africa will face steep Asian competition in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, as well as up-and-coming challengers in Nepal and Netherlands. The South African side is one of the top in the world but often struggles to win tournaments. Hopefully, they get to change this narrative in the West Indies starting June 3rd. The Proteas have a strong batting lineup with captain Aidan Markram joining Quinton De Kock, Reeza Hendricks, Heinrich Klaasen, and David Miller. The pace bowlers will be led by Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje, while Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi will be the top spinners for the side.

Can the Two Asian Sides Break This Rut They Are In?

Despite losing the series to the USA, Bangladesh is still a top-10 T20 nation in the world. Full Members should only be doubted at their own peril. They will be led by captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, while veteran Shakib Al Hasan returns to the side after nearly a year off. Wicketkeeper Litton Das and all-rounder Mahmudullah will look to keep up their six-hitting prowess.

On the bowling side, vice-captain Taskin Ahmed and star pacer Mustafizur Rahman should help their country challenge South Africa and Sri Lanka for a spot in the Super Eight. “The Fizz” is the reason why the US could not complete the 3-0 sweep on May 25th. In his four-over spell, he took six wickets at an economy rate of 2.50. One thing they will be keeping an eye on is the health of Shoriful Islam, who might’ve picked up a hand injury in today’s warmup match against India.

Sri Lanka brings a mixture of star power and experience to the T20 World Cup, previously winning the tournament in 2014. All-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga will serve as captain, while middle-order batter Charith Asalanka will be his vice-captain. Hasaranga’s side features plenty of spin not only from their specialist bowlers, which should be good for depth and flexibility purposes. Veterans Angelo Mathews (former captain), Dasun Shanaka (former captain), ODI captain Kusal Mendis, and Test captain Dhananjaya de Silva will provide further leadership to the side. Five of their top specialist bowlers, including Dushmantha Chameera and Matheesha Pathirana, have taken part in recent IPL seasons, thus enhancing their credibility. The Sri Lankans will look to break out of the group stage and return to their former glory as one of the world’s top cricketing nations.

Two Similarly-Ranked Associates Grouped Together

Nepal has one of the youngest sides of the tournament, with only one player past the age of 30. Regardless, they do have some stars to compete with the bigger names in the group and tournament. The Nepalis played well in the recent ACC Premier Cup as well as in a home series against the West Indies A team. Captain Rohit Paudel hit a century in the first game against West Indies A, while Dipendra Singh Airee recently hit six sixes in one over against Qatar.

Both will lead an explosive batting lineup including the two Kushals, Bhurtel and Malla. Sompal Kami and Karan KC are the veteran fast bowlers providing valuable international experience for this young side. One key player missing from the side is the nation’s leading wicket-taker Sandeep Lamichhane, who was caught up in legal troubles. After being cleared of his charges, he had the opportunity to participate in the tournament but was denied his US visa. After making their T20 debut in 2014, Nepal looks to challenge the powers and stay competitive in a group with three full-member nations.

The Netherlands have definitely been a standout team over the last few years. They were the only associate nation to play in the 2023 ODI World Cup and finished in the top 12 of the 2022 T20 tournament. The only issue is that the country is fielding a weaker side than they normally would. Former South African pair Colin Ackermann and Roelof van der Merwe chose to continue playing county cricket instead of the World Cup. Meanwhile, four top bowlers (Brandon Glover, Timm van der Gugten, Fred Klaassen, and Daniel Doram) have been lost to injury.

The nation’s leading run-scorer (Max O’Dowd) and wicket-taker (Paul van Meekeren) feature in the country’s fourth consecutive World Cup. Captain and wicketkeeper Scott Edwards has made it popular to maximize running between the wickets for two-run opportunities. The Netherlands has managed to be a scrappy side and look to continue their recent success in a crowded group with a real chance to advance. Group D might be the most competitive of them all, with three test-playing nations and two associate members that are climbing up the rankings.

The Super Eight Contenders

The First Two Groups

So, who will advance to the Super Eight stage and beyond? In Group A, the United States team looks promising after two victories over Bangladesh. Ireland is capable of springing many upsets of their own and has more experience than the Americans and Canadians. Both the US and Canada are making their T20 World Cup debuts, yet both are capable of taking on tough opponents. However, at the end of the day, India is one of the world’s top cricketing nations. They boast a team with world-class batters and bowlers, many of whom are coming off the Indian Premier League season and are in top form. Pakistan is coming off of a runners-up finish in 2022 and is bringing a talented squad to the US and Caribbean. A few upsets might occur, but expect India and Pakistan to advance out of Group A.

In Group B, Scotland is not an easy opponent, while both Namibia and Oman bring some experience and talent to the big stage. Scotland joins Ireland as teams who could spring some big upsets. However, Australia and England are just on a different level. England is coming off the T20 World Cup championship and looks to repeat. The Aussies recently defeated host nation India in the ODI World Cup and brings a talented side to the T20 tournament. Many of its top hitters and bowlers participated in the IPL and had huge impacts as overseas players, so they will be in top form in the West Indies. Expect both the Australians and the English to continue their dominance.

The Last Two Groups

Group C presents an interesting case, with New Zealand, the West Indies, and Afghanistan all being capable of advancing. Newcomers Uganda and Papua New Guinea will likely struggle against much more experienced nations, but each team has the chance to record at least one win in the group stage. The Windies have recently struggled in the T20 format, even failing to advance to the Super Twelve stage in 2022. However, the side has the batting firepower and has won the tournament twice. Having matches on their own turf should help them advance this time.

New Zealand advanced to the semifinals in 2022 and brings back a very talented team in their own right. Afghanistan is very capable of making a deep run with star players of their own, but I believe they will fall short of taking a spot away from the West Indies and New Zealand. Home-field advantage will help the Caribbean side finally break out of their slump.

Finally, in Group D, South Africa should be the favorites. They feature a powerful hitting lineup with international superstars, similar to Australia and India. Bangladesh has struggled lately, despite having a veteran lineup, while Sri Lanka brings a lot of experience and talent in their own right. Despite making it to the Super Twelve stage in 2022, the Dutch side will likely fall short this time. So will a young Nepal side lacking the experience other teams have. South Africa and Sri Lanka are likely to make it out, while Bangladesh and the Netherlands are likely left behind.

Who Will Be This Year’s Upset Picks?

I predict two teams who will cause upsets in the group stage: Afghanistan (Group C) and Netherlands (Group D). Afghanistan has been on the rise for many years, featuring such stars as Rashid and Gurbaz. Gurbaz, notably, was one of KKR’s openers in this year’s IPL, making two notable contributions in crunch-time situations. This is as good a year as any for the Afghans to advance, especially if one or both of New Zealand and West Indies struggle.

The door to the Super Eight could also be wide open for the Dutch as well. They’ve been a thorn in South Africa’s side in two of the last combined World Cups (T20 and ODI). If they can pull off another upset against the Proteas, I feel like the Dutch could have a good shot at advancing further. The Flying Dutchmen will also have to take down a couple of Asian sides, which is no easy task. However, they might just be better than Bangladesh based on current form. They should not be too much of an underdog against Sri Lanka, who they just recently took down in a warmup match.

Honorable Mentions

The Americans and Irish will be fired up to produce some upsets as well, but India and Pakistan will likely be too much to overcome in Group A. Since Australia and England should dominate Group B, it doesn’t leave much room for upsets to occur.

Playoff Predictions!

In the end, I see the four semifinalists being India, England, Australia, and the home team West Indies. This could produce scintillating semifinals, with India possibly battling their old rivals England. A top Australian team could take on the always explosive West Indies side, one that is looking to regain their old dominance. A rematch of the 2023 ODI World Cup final may be in order, as both India and Australia appear to be above all others. However, this time, my prediction has India’s star-studded lineup powering through. They should be able to avenge their prior defeat to take home their second T20 title, their first since 2007.

What a Champions League It Has Been!

The UEFA Champions League is usually a star-studded affair every year, and things were no different this time around. Having previously covered up to the Round of 16 last time, I am going to bring my unique takes to the quarterfinal and semifinal matchups leading up to today’s final.

Quarterfinals

Four Exciting First Legs

The first leg of this year’s Champions League had multiple talking points in April. All four matches went down to the wire and entertained fans, setting up several nail-biting second legs.

In a clash of European powerhouses, Arsenal and Bayern Munich squared off on April 9th. Bukayo Saka and Harry Kane showcased their top-level ability, securing crucial goals for their respective teams. The match might have ended in a 2-2 draw but there was drama and excitement throughout. Substitutes Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard connected on a pass to tie the game for the Gunners, who might’ve felt that they should’ve been awarded a penalty in the 90+3rd minute. Frenchman Kingsley Coman also missed a potential game-winner for Bayern in the 90th minute as well. The anticipation for the second leg on April 17th was very high!

April 9th also saw fans rewarded with the draw of Real Madrid and Manchester City, and the match did not disappoint. Madrid was looking to get revenge for last year, when City eliminated them in the semifinals in a seemingly one-sided affair. Bernardo Silva set the tone for the match with a goal in the second minute, putting the pressure on Madrid. However, a Ruben Dias own goal and Rodrygo goal came in quick succession to hurt City. Both teams were able to rally and tie the game 3-3, as Man City had two second-half goals to take the lead but Federico Valverde’s 79th minute strike ensured that Real weren’t going to just sit quietly. Heading back to Etihad Stadium in Manchester for the second leg is such an exciting way to finish off the series.

Despite the statistical advantage from Dortmund, Atletico Madrid managed to be victorious 2-1 against the German club on April 10th. The match highlighted the importance of converting opportunities into goals, with Atletico’s efficiency being the key factor in the win. As they looked ahead to the next rounds, both teams aimed to defy expectations and continue their impressive run as underdogs in the tournament.

The April 10th clash between PSG and Barcelona was also nail-biting, with both teams displaying moments of brilliance on the pitch. Barcelona edged out the Paris club 3-2, with Brazilian national team player Raphinha having a world-class performance. Barca must’ve been on a high as they went back to Paris for the second leg.

The Time to Determine Winners: The Second Leg

Despite the first-leg deficit, BVB showed their class in an all-out 4-2 performance on April 16th. For all the talk about converting their chances in the first leg, it was the Bundesliga team that finished well this time. A double strike in the 34th and 39th minutes gave them the aggregate lead, but Mats Hummels conceded an own goal to keep things tied again. While Angel Correa might’ve thought he had done enough for Atleti in the 64th minute, Niclas Fullkrug and Marcel Sabitzer had other things in mind. Their double strike after the 70th minute ensured a 5-4 aggregate victory over the La Liga team to take Borussia Dortmund into the semis.

Another team that had to overcome a deficit, the Parisian giants dispatched Barcelona with three second-half goals on April 16th. While Raphinha led off the scoring, Kylian Mbappe reigned supreme in this matchup with two goals to win 4-1 and have a 6-4 aggregate victory as well. It was a testy matchup, with 22 fouls and nine yellow cards combined. The Blaugrana had to play a man down due to a 29th-minute red card to Ronald Araujo, and the floodgates did open after he left the field.

If April 16th was the day when teams made sure that their opponents had no chance of coming back, April 17th was a day of waiting to determine winners. Arsenal was not able to continue its run thanks to a 63rd Joshua Kimmich goal that broke the deadlock in the match and the aggregate. While Bayern only had 3/15 shots on target, all they needed was one to go in to advance to the semifinals.

Finally, Real Madrid and Manchester City made sure that there was plenty of drama in a game that ended in a penalty shootout. Rodrygo got a 12th-minute goal to start things off, but Belgian midfield mastermind Kevin De Bruyne tied the score again in the 76th minute. Each time had extra time chances that weren’t converted, and then they had to go to penalties.

Madridistas must’ve had their hearts up to their chests when Luka Modric missed the first Real penalty. However, Bernardo Silva’s tame chance and Mateo Kovacic’s attempt were stopped by Andriy Lunin to add pressure on City. Unfortunately for the Premier League side, Madrid went a perfect 4-for-4 in the remaining PKs, thus ensuring that the three Man City penalties were in vain. Los Blancos managed a 4-3 penalty shootout victory after a 1-1 tie (4-4 aggregate).

Semifinals

A First Leg Repeat of Close Games

April 30th and May 1st almost seemed like repeats of the first leg of the quarterfinals, with close scores determining the two matches. Real Madrid opened the scoring in a game that saw three more second-half goals scored in total. Leroy Sane and Harry Kane had goals in quick succession but, just as fans have come to expect, no lead has been safe so far. Vinicius Junior added an 83rd-minute penalty to have his second goal of the game to keep the leg drawn at two-all.

Meanwhile, BVB’s Fullkrug managed to add another goal to his tally early in the 36th minute, and that’s all that was needed for Dortmund to get the win. Both teams had low conversion percentages (4/13, 3/14). Chances may have gone missing, but this 1-0 scoreline was a defender’s dream. Gregor Kobel’s multiple saves still keep his Dortmund team in games.

A Second Leg for the Ages!

In what could be one of his last games in the black and yellow, Mats Hummels’ 50th-minute goal was the decider in another 1-0 (2-0 aggregate) victory over PSG. Die Borussen only shot the ball seven times, with three on goal, playing smarter, not harder. Compare that to Les Parisiens going seven for a whopping 30 chances and not landing a single goal! Gregor Kobel and the Dortmund defense ends up with another clean sheet. Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappe’s possible last game in Paris ends his seven-year run on a sour note.

Did anyone think that this edition of the Champions League was not exciting enough? Well, look no further than the second leg of Bayern Munich vs. Real Madrid! After a scoreless first half, Alphonso Davies’ 68th-minute shot might’ve kept the German giants’ hopes for a 2024 trophy alive. They did have five shots on goal out of eight chances. Things were looking on the up… and then a man named Joselu (who is on loan, I might add) flipped the script. An 88th-minute goal was not enough to quench his thirst, so he casually decided to add a stunner in the 90+1st minute. Thanks to his late contributions, Real won 2-1 and 4-3 on aggregate. What an ending that was!

The Final Preview of the Current Edition

The first leg of the 2024 Champions League quarterfinals was filled with competitive action that left fans wanting more. The finishing scores perfectly set up entertaining second legs, where the winners separated themselves with clinical displays.

In the semis, we saw two low-scoring PSG vs. Dortmund games that were enough to decide a winner. At the same time, a 90th-minute stunner saw Los Blancos reach their 18th UCL final. They had to fight back to tie the game in both legs, eventually winning it in the second one.

Now, we have the final to talk about, one that has so many major implications. For Jude Bellingham personally, it’s a battle between the club that gave the world a chance to show them who he was versus the club that has essentially ascended him into superstardom. Several offseason decisions need to be made on both sides, with aging veterans like Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, Marco Reus, and Hummels either retiring or leaving their respective sides soon.

Real Madrid keeps rolling no matter the outcome, with several possible additions on the way. This list includes two players who came up short in the semifinals this year (Mbappe, Davies). This is their 18th UCL finals appearance and they’ve only lost three times, so history is clearly behind them. Meanwhile, this is Dortmund’s third appearance and they can possibly add to their 1997 title. Tune in at 3:00 PM ET for the final of this edition of the Champions League!

The 2023 season for the Oakland Athletics was another dreadful one, as they went 50-112 and finished last in the AL West for the second year in a row. Before the 2024 season, rumors swirled around the team’s potential move to a different location. This prompted low home game attendance, as evidenced by their last-place ranking this year. They are averaging almost 6,000 fewer fans than the next team, prompting fans to boycott owner John Fisher. What is going on with this once-storied franchise? Let’s take a closer look at what has happened since last year.

Future Relocation

On June 13, 2023, the team experienced their infamous “reverse boycott”, which saw the stands filled with more than 37,000 people and chants of “sell the team” aimed at Fisher. While the A’s have been trending downward in recent years, 2023 showed how little the front office seems to care. On the flip side, many fans do care and want to see changes made in their own city rather than in someone else’s.

Amid all this, Fisher made a significant announcement: the team will no longer play in the Oakland Coliseum after the 2024 season. With their lease expiring, the A’s plan to play their home games in West Sacramento, California, for three years before eventually moving to Las Vegas. Sutter Health Park, home of the San Francisco Giants’ AAA affiliate, will host the team starting next year. They also plan to drop “Oakland” out of their name, simply becoming the “Athletics” or the “A’s”.

The Stars of the Show in 2023

Despite the tough times last year, there were still some bright spots on the roster. Some rookies stood out and showcased their talents on the field and at the plate in 2023.

Second baseman Zack Gelof made his debut in July and, in just 69 games, recorded a 134 OPS+. OPS+ measures a player’s performance adjusted to the ballpark, with 100 being average. This meant he was performing 34% better than the average player. He hit .267 with 20 doubles and 14 homers last year. The one drawback to his game was frequent strikeouts, with over 80 Ks in less than 70 games. Nevertheless, he made a name for himself and had A’s fans excited for the upcoming season.

Rule 5 draft pick Ryan Noda, 27, (formerly of the Dodgers) was a key part of the offense as well. After making the Opening Day roster, Noda became the team’s primary first baseman. Despite only hitting .229, he accumulated 118 OPS+ thanks to 39 extra-base hits and only seven errors in the field.

Acquired in a 2022 trade, Shea Langeliers finished second on the team with 22 home runs, which earned him the nickname “Shea Bangeliers”. The 26-year-old catcher, part of the Matt Olson trade with the Braves, has solidified his role as the team’s primary catcher. Outfielder Esteury Ruiz also made significant contributions, stealing an impressive 67 bases, tying for the team lead with 114 hits, and leading the A’s with 24 doubles.

While all these contributions were notable, the team’s lone All-Star representative was designated hitter Brent Rooker. For the first time in his career, the 29-year-old played more than 60 games in a season, having previously been with four different teams. He emerged as a standout player, finishing the season with 20 doubles, 30 home runs, and a team-leading 69 RBIs. Rooker also tied with Ruiz for the most hits on the team.

Their pitching staff could not match the offensive firepower, finishing last in the AL with a team ERA of 5.48. However, relief pitcher Austin Pruitt and closer Trevor May were bright spots, as Pruitt posted a 2.98 ERA in 38 games, while May recorded 21 saves in 49 games.

A Tough but Interesting Offseason

After the season ended, the Athletics began their offseason in typical fashion: losing key players to higher-paying teams and only signing inexpensive, younger or older players with hopes of turning them around. The abovementioned pitching standouts, Pruitt (Rangers) and May (retirement), left the team shortly after the regular season concluded. Other notable departures included 2B/LF Tony Kemp (Twins), infielder Jace Peterson (free agent), and RP Shintaro Fujinami (Mets).

The current 26-man roster in 2024 features 14 new players acquired through various methods: two free-agent signings, two waiver claims, a Rule 5 selection, five minor league signings who were promoted, three trade acquisitions, and a prospect promotion. Key additions include RP Scott Alexander, 3B J.D. Davis, 3B/LF Miguel Andujar, RP/SP Mitch Spence, and 3B/2B Abraham Toro.

The additions did not stop there, as they acquired three pitchers who are currently injured. SP Ross Stripling was traded by the Giants on the same day that the A’s signed Alex Wood, a former teammate from both the Dodgers and the Giants. RP Trevor Gott was the team’s second offseason signing, after the now-optioned Osvaldo Bido. However, his season ended before it began as he had to undergo Tommy John surgery.

A Sudden Resurgence After a Slow Start

Despite low expectations from fans and experts for the 2024 season, the A’s surprised many. After losing seven of their first eight games, they bounced back with a 6-2 record in the following eight games. By the end of the first month, they held a 14-17 record, positioning them in the top three of the American League West.

This sudden turnaround is attributed to a mix of veteran players meeting expectations and young stars continuing to shine. The team currently boasts four starters and two backups with an OPS+ above 100, and their bullpen ranks among the strongest in the league.

2024’s Offensive Standouts

Leading the offensive charge are Rooker and Langeliers. Rooker boasts a .280 batting average with 11 home runs, while Langeliers has already contributed 12 homers with a 120 OPS+. Meanwhile, last year’s standout performers Gelof and Noda have had slow starts to the season, batting .176 and .128, respectively. However, their contributions are being offset by other players stepping up.

Toro, on his fourth team at just 27, is off to the best start of his career. He is currently batting .290 with 60 hits in 55 games. Another standout is OF JJ Bleday, who played 82 games in 2023 for the A’s and hit a mere .195. This year, he has turned it around, pairing a .250 BA with 26 extra-base hits.

The Real 2024 Showstoppers: The Bullpen

Their starters have been serviceable so far, with 28-year-old lefty SP J.P. Sears leading the way with a 3.88 ERA. However, their bullpen has been one of the biggest surprises of the season. Two pitchers have been particularly impressive: Austin Adams and Mason Miller. Adams was acquired in March from the Mets for cash considerations. The 33-year-old has only pitched in more than 25 games twice in his career but has been on a tear this season. In 26 games, he has a 2.41 ERA, only giving up five earned runs on 15 hits while striking out 25 over 18.2 innings. He leads the team with 13 holds as well.

The only person overshadowing him is their new closer, Mason Miller. After pitching in just 10 games in 2023 and posting a 3.78 ERA, Miller showcased his skills in Spring Training and secured a spot on the Opening Day roster in 2024. He has been untouchable since then!

He features a four-seam fastball averaging 100.9 mph, reaching 104 already this season, alongside a slider averaging just under 90 mph. So far, Miller has only allowed six earned runs in 26.0 innings while striking out 51 and walking just 10. His control has been exceptional, consistently placing 102 mph fastballs in the corners of the strike zone. On the next pitch, he might repeat the same or switch to his slider or changeup, both averaging below 93 mph.

Earning the league minimum salary, Miller is establishing himself as one of baseball’s premier pitchers. He has an impressive 0.88 WHIP (walks plus hits per nine innings) and 17.7 K/9 (strikeouts per nine innings). Despite being only 26, Miller is poised for a substantial payday at season’s end.

Keep Believing, A’s Fans!

Unfortunately, the Athletics eventually regressed after reaching a high point of 17-17 on May 4th… They experienced a 6-18 downturn since their six-game win streak at the start of the month. While notable individual performances haven’t been enough to turn the team around and put them in the playoff conversation, they offer hope for the team’s future. These are elements that Oakland residents have one last chance to cherish before their team is taken away from them… The Athletics become the second team in the past four years to move from the Oakland area to Las Vegas, following the Raiders’ relocation in 2020.

The Athletics have a storied history, boasting nine World Series titles, 15 AL Pennants, and 17 AL West Division titles. From Philadelphia to Kansas City to Oakland, they are now destined for their latest move to Las Vegas. The opening of the new stadium in 2028 will mark their sixth stadium in franchise history. While A’s fans will continue their support in a new city, it will be a somber time for Oakland. The city has lost several sports teams in the past six years, with their efforts to attract sports teams in the future remaining uncertain. Nonetheless, the A’s look forward to a fresh start in Sacramento and Las Vegas.
