Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award- Player of the Week

Each week during the 2026 season the Maxwell Football Club will recognize an outstanding performance by a college freshman with the Shaun Alexander Freshman Player of the Week award. The Shaun Alexander Player of the Week will be recognized for overall performance on offense, defense or special teams and players selected do not have to be represented on the Shaun Alexander Award preseason watch list.

LB – Xavier Griffin

Alabama

Alabama linebacker Xavier Griffin has been named the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Week following a standout performance in the Crimson Tide’s 56-23 win over Mississippi State.

Griffin anchored the defense with a career-high nine total tackles, three of them solo and six assisted, and recorded the first sack of his young college career. His ability to get into the backfield and make plays from sideline to sideline made a difference, as Alabama’s defense helped fuel a dominant victory over the Bulldogs.

Griffin’s effort showcased the versatility that makes him a disruptive presence in the middle of the defense. With a talent like his, we expect his role to grow as the season continues.
