Yesterday, the University of Alabama-Huntsville Chargers traveled to Rome, Georgia to face the Shorter University Hawks. This was the second game in the men’s lacrosse Peach Belt Conference, which began last week. The Chargers had come up against the Hawks seven times before the game, with UAH having only lost once. Given that Shorter’s last win was back in 2016, it was clear that they were at a disadvantage. Throw in Huntsville’s excellent performance this season, and it seemed like the Hawks’ home-field advantage might not be enough.

The first quarter showed a discrepancy in skill between the two teams, as the Chargers scored nine points. Initially scoring a point every two minutes, UAH picked up the pace and began scoring almost every minute! Shorter tried to mount an offensive of their own, but the Chargers just proved to be indomitable. The quarter ended 9-0 in favor of Huntsville.

The second quarter appeared like it would be a repeat of the first. The Chargers opened the quarter by scoring seven points in a row. With five minutes left on the clock, the Hawks suddenly began to regroup. Shorter managed to prevent any other Charger goals in the quarter and managed to score two of their own. This brought the halftime score to 16-2 in favor of UAH.

The Huntsville players began to tire from their offense in the third quarter. They managed to score right as the quarter started, but the Hawks scored immediately after. This brought life back to the Chargers, as they proceeded to score another four uninterrupted points. With five seconds until the end of the period, Shorter’s Jaden Sealey scored a point, bringing the score to 21-4, UAH.

At this point, UAH had truly worn itself out. The Hawks opened the quarter with three straight goals, desperately trying to bridge the point gap. Huntsville managed to score a point of their own, which was followed by the Hawks once again. Finally, the Chargers rallied one last time for a final point, which was met by a final point from Shorter. These last-quarter points were not enough, though, and UAH won 23-9.
