Nick Kelly is FWAA 2024 Edward Aschoff Rising Star

Kelly wins 2024 Edward Aschoff Rising Star Award

By Bill Bender / 2024 FWAA First Vice President

DALLAS (FWAA) – Nick Kelly, formerly of The Tuscaloosa News and now with AL.com, is the fifth recipient of the Edward Aschoff Rising Star Award, which is presented annually by the Football Writers Association of America. The award is named after Aschoff, the beloved ESPN college football reporter who died on Christmas Eve in 2019 on his 34th birthday from previously undetected Stage 4 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in his lungs.

“I hope I can carry on his legacy of really making an impact on people and the way he did his job,” Kelly said. “I really do hope I can continue to do that. It is such an honor to get an award with his name on it.”

Kelly, 26, graduated from the University of Missouri in 2020. He was recognized for his outstanding work on the Alabama football beat and coverage in the aftermath of Nick Saban’s retirement. Kelly accepted a writing position with AL.com ahead of the 2024-25 football season.

Wilson Alexander of The Advocate was the fourth winner of this award in 2023. Other past winners include Sports Illustrated’s Richard Johnson (2022), The Athletic’s Grace Raynor (2021) and The Athletic’s David Ubben (2020) – the first recipient of the Edward Aschoff Rising Star Award.

“Nick Kelly continually found ways to tell compelling and unique stories about Alabama’s football team despite access to players and coaches being severely limited,” ESPN.com’s Chris Low said.

“His sourcing within the program grew as he had time to develop genuine relationships and he wasn’t timid about wading into those issues that can be uncomfortable for beat reporters that have to be there every day.”

Kelly joined The Tuscaloosa News in 2021. He worked as an intern with Boston Globe Media and worked for the Columbia Missourian and Minneapolis Star-Tribune before taking on the Alabama beat.

“When I joined The Tuscaloosa News in 2021, you knew with Nick Saban’s retirement – there was a decent chance I would be covering it,” Kelly said. “I think you were always mentally prepared for it. It was surreal when it happened, but at the same time I was prepared for the plan of action.”

Kelly credits Tommy Deas, Kelly’s editor at the Tuscaloosa News, for helping put that plan into action when Saban announced his retirement on Jan. 10.

Kelly was able to use his relationship with Saban’s children – Nicholas and Kristen – to produce a profile of life after retirement for the entire family. Kelly said the key to producing content that stood out in that month was asking the right internal questions.

“How can we use the relationships I’ve built in my time here to tell different aspects of the story?” Kelly asked. “Everyone was talking about it. Everyone wanted to know about it. No detail was too small, so it was a matter of, ‘How can we cultivate those details?”

Kelly took two lessons from the late Cecil Hurt, the longtime columnist at The Tuscaloosa News who passed away in 2021, to stay grounded on the Alabama beat.

Kelly said Hurt was genuine at all times but also worked the beat with the tongue-in-cheek mantra of “everyone else knows more than you do.”

“The humility of ‘people know more than you do’ is such a mindset I try to keep when I go about my work.”

Kelly also has an appreciation for Aschoff – whose legacy endures with the Rising Star Award.

“I’m well aware of his legacy and seeing what people have said about him,” Kelly said. “Finding out I’m winning an award named for him is really, really cool because I know what he accomplished in a short time.”

Examples of Kelly’s recent work:

Epic Nick Saban stories, as told by Alabama football players who’d know as he retires

Thank you Cecil Hurt. Wish you could be at the wedding this weekend

Remembering Edward Aschoff
Aschoff graduated from the University of Florida in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. After covering Gators football, basketball and baseball from 2007 to 2011 for The Gainesville Sun, he joined ESPN in 2011 as an SEC reporter and distinguished himself as a rising star.

Aschoff moved to Los Angeles in 2017 to begin a more expanded national role that included television coverage. Over three seasons, he reported from campuses across the country for ESPN.com, SportsCenter, SEC Network and ESPN Radio, and he worked as a television and radio sideline reporter during college football games.

Aschoff inspired us through his storytelling, brightened our lives with his gregarious personality, and uplifted our spirits with his energy. The FWAA hopes to honor his memory and his commitment to aspiring journalists with this award.

“Edward epitomized everything you want in a sports journalist: He knew how to build relationships, to gain trust, to break stories but also to tell stories,” ESPN.com’s Andrea Adelson said. “And he did it all with a flair that made you want to watch his television pieces or read his written stories right away. His dogged determination and relentless work ethic allowed him to rise to the top at ESPN, and all his exemplary qualities serve as a model for young journalists everywhere about what truly can be achieved if you go after what you want.”

The University of Florida’s College of Journalism and Communications has established the Edward Aschoff Memorial Fund, which will provide support for students involved in sports journalism.

“Edward was one of our stars – not just because he was so talented as a journalist and storyteller, but also because of everything he did to help people around him. He always had a good word of advice for young journalists, he was always willing to give back, and he always made people smile,” said Ted Spiker, chair of the department of journalism at the University of Florida who taught Edward in several classes at UF.

Founded in 1941, the Football Writers Association of America consists of journalists, broadcasters, publicists, photographers and key executives in all areas of college football. The FWAA works to govern media access and game-day operations while presenting awards and honors, including an annual All-America team. For more information about the FWAA and its programs and initiatives, contact Executive Director Steve Richardson at 214-870-6516 or tiger@fwaa.com.

Forecasting the AFC East: Who Will Rise to the Top?

0

Every team in the AFC East has made changes in the offseason with hopes of contending for the playoffs this year. While some teams have a better chance than others, each team has at least one reason for optimism about a division win this season.

Buffalo Bills: James Cook’s Emergence

Midway through the 2023 season, the Bills were looking from the outside in on the playoff picture. Despite Josh Allen being one of the league’s top quarterbacks, the offense often stalled. They had a 5-5 record after Week 11. Offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey was blamed and relieved of his duties after a Week 11 loss to the Denver Broncos. The Bills quickly hired Joe Brady as his replacement. Brady aimed to expand the use of his elusive running back, James Cook.

Under Dorsey, Cook averaged 12 carries per game, but that number increased to just under 17 when Brady took over. With less offensive pressure on Allen, the Bills won six of their last seven games to secure the AFC East title.  Cook finished the season with an average of 4.7 yards per carry and over 1,100 rushing yards. Allen has historically been prone to interceptions due to the Bills’ pass-first approach. However, a more balanced offense with Cook getting more carries could reduce the pressure on Allen and limit his tendency to make risky throws.

Miami Dolphins: Speed in the Sun

The Dolphins’ offensive success in recent years has stemmed from Tua Tagovailoa’s ability to get his weapons the ball in space, including one of the league’s best WR duos, Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill. Hill, recently named the NFL’s top player on the NFL Top 100 list, had a phenomenal season last year. He led the NFL with 1,799 receiving yards and tied for the league lead with 13 touchdown receptions. His exceptional speed is a major factor in his success.

Similarly, Waddle’s elusiveness and burst contributed to his 1,000 receiving yards and four touchdowns. Hill and Waddle pose a significant challenge for opposing defenses, made even tougher by Miami’s speedy running back duo. Raheem Mostert, despite aging, proved he still has plenty of speed.

He rushed for over 1,000 yards and led the league with 18 touchdowns in 2023. His top speed was 21.62 mph during a 43-yard touchdown run in Week 2. Mostert isn’t even the fastest running back on his team; that title belongs to De’Von Achane, who reached 21.93 mph in Week 3 and led the league with 7.8 yards per carry among players with at least 100 attempts. With their explosive offensive speed, the Dolphins have a strong chance to claim the AFC East title in 2024.

New England Patriots: A Fresh Start

The Belichick era is officially over as 2024 marks the first season without the legendary head coach on the Patriots’ sideline since 1999. Under Bill Belichick, the Patriots won 16 AFC East titles and six Super Bowls. However, with New England’s recent struggles, the team has turned a page and hired head coach Jerod Mayo. Mayo, a former Patriots linebacker who helped win Super Bowl XLIX and later served as a linebackers coach, brings youthful energy to the team. At 37, he is expected to invigorate both the team and its defense.

The Patriots have also selected quarterback Drake Maye, hoping he will become the franchise cornerstone. Standing 6-foot-4 and weighing 223 pounds, Maye has the natural tools to become a star. There is also buzz around rookie quarterback Joe Milton, drafted 190 picks behind Maye, who also has the potential to succeed. While Maye is the likely starter, either quarterback having a breakout season could position the Patriots for future success.

New York Jets: Aaron Rodgers is Back

The Jets appeared to be building something special last season with the addition of multiple MVP Aaron Rodgers to their young roster. However, the 2023 campaign was derailed when Rodgers tore his Achilles just four plays into Week 1. Despite strong performances from their young offensive weapons and a solid defense, quarterback play from Zach Wilson, Trevor Siemian, and Tim Boyle was not enough to overcome the loss of Rodgers. The 2023 season allowed young players like Breece Hall and Garrett Wilson to shine.

Hall rushed for nearly 1,000 yards and scored five touchdowns. Wilson amassed over 1,000 receiving yards and three touchdowns despite inconsistent quarterback play. Heading into the 2024 season, Rodgers aims to return to the form that earned him back-to-back MVP awards in 2020 and 2021. At 40 years old, questions remain about whether his best days are behind him. But the Jets fortunes will largely depend on his performance. With solid quarterback play, the Jets have a chance to win their first AFC East championship since 2002.

Parque Villa Lobos to Host NFL Experience from Friday, Sept. 6 to Sunday, Sept. 8, to Celebrate Historic NFL Game in Brazil

NFL Experience is Non-Ticketed and Free for Fans of all Ages to Attend

SÃO, PAULO, BRAZIL — Aug. 6, 2024 — The NFL today announced it will officially touch down in Parque Villa Lobos, in the city of São Paulo, to celebrate its first-ever game in South America with NFL Experience: a free to attend three-day American football fan festival.

NFL Experience will begin on Friday, Sept. 6 and will be open across the 2024 NFL Kickoff weekend — bringing NFL watch parties and immersive American Football events and experiences to fans of all ages under the backdrop of the historic NFL São Paulo Game.

In partnership with SP Turis and the São Paulo Mayor’s office, NFL Experience will open from 3 p.m. on Sept. 6 welcoming fans to an official watch party of the first-ever NFL game in Brazil, where the Green Bay Packers will take on the Philadelphia Eagles at 9:15 p.m. local time. Additional watch parties will continue across the weekend, showcasing Week 1 NFL games airing in the afternoon on Sunday, Sept. 8.

Adding to the NFL-city takeover, fans can participate in interactive football challenges, NFL Flag football clinics and register for NFL RUN, a 5km race with a 2km recreational walk at NFL Experience at 7:00 a.m. local time on Sunday, Sept. 8 — organized by Ponto Org Eventos.

Fans of all ages can take photos at various American football exhibits, including with The Vince Lombardi Trophy — the trophy awarded each year to the Super Bowl winning team — all 58 Super Bowl rings, NFL helmets and an all-new Born to Play gallery showcasing the faces and places moving football forward across diverse regions of Brazil, by Brazilian photographer Luisa Dorr.

Activations from teams playing in-market, as well as the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots who hold marketing rights across Brazil via the NFL’s Global Markets Program, will pop up throughout the weekend at NFL Experience.

NFL Experience attendees are also able to purchase exclusive game merchandise at NFL Shop presented by Visa onsite. Additional NFL Shop presented by Visa stores are open throughout the region, with six retail locations across São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. All locations are operated by Fanatics.

“Hosting an NFL game in São Paulo reinforces our city as one of the main destinations for great world events,” said São Paulo Mayor, Ricardo Nunes. “To welcome the NFL, we have prepared a unique experience for all fans to feel the excitement and adrenaline of the games. We are thrilled to partner with the league on the NFL Experience, free and available to all Paulistanos — an initiative generating employment and economic impact for the city.”

“It is initiatives like these that make São Paulo one of the most important cities in the event sector around the world,” said President of SP Turis, Gustavo Pires. “An event as historic and monumental as the NFL São Paulo Game, with the NFL Experience fan festival open for all to attend, shows that São Paulo is the perfect partner to help reach and expand an audience — and that events hosted throughout the city are an incredible opportunity for its growth.”

“The NFL is taking over the city of São Paulo for the first-ever game in Brazil, providing a thrilling experience for fans,” said Managing Director, NFL International, Gerrit Meier. “We want to extend our thanks to Mayor Nunes and SP Turis for welcoming the league to this amazing city and such an iconic location. This will be an action-packed and monumental NFL-filled weekend.”

UK Accepts Probation & Vacates Football Wins From Violations

0

The University of Kentucky’s football program has agreed to sanctions imposed by the NCAA for rule violations. The penalties include a two-year probation period and the vacating of all 10 victories earned during the 2021-2022 season. This action comes after the discovery of 11 players in the Kentucky sports program who have received impermissible benefits. They were offered NIL money without fulfilling any requirements of the NIL.

The Football Season Guide

The situation began to unfold when the university self-reported these violations in September 2022. As part of its commitment to addressing the issue, Kentucky took immediate steps to address the situation internally. Two key players, star running back Chris Rodriguez and linebacker Jordan Wright, were benched at the start of the 2022 season. These players were initially sidelined due to what was publicly described as an undisclosed off-the-field issue. Rodriguez and Wright had both played in every game during the 2021 season. Which is now under scrutiny due to these violations.

The NCAA’s investigation into the matter determined that the infractions fell into the Level 2 category. This classification represents a less severe tier within the NCAA’s structured system for categorizing significant violations. Despite this classification, the sanctions imposed are substantial and include both a financial penalty and the vacating of all 10 victories from the 2021 season. This also includes the notable Citrus Bowl victory over Iowa, which was a highlight of that season. Additionally, the university will be under a two-year probation period, which will include closer oversight by the NCAA.

In response to the NCAA’s ruling, UK President Eli Capilouto issued a statement on Friday addressing the outcome. “Once the University of Kentucky became aware of the issues, we undertook a comprehensive investigation to understand the extent of the violations. We reported our findings to the NCAA and implemented our own set of sanctions to address the infractions. Much of this process has already been communicated and reported publicly. Today’s announcement by the NCAA represents the final determination and enforcement of sanctions concerning the UK Athletics program. We respect the NCAA’s findings and have fully engaged in the investigative process. We accept the final resolution and are committed to moving forward with integrity, transparency, and a renewed focus on maintaining the highest standards within our athletic programs.”

The university’s response highlights its commitment to compliance and accountability while acknowledging the need to uphold the integrity of its athletic programs. Moving forward, Kentucky will work under the constraints of the probation period, which will include increased scrutiny and oversight from the NCAA to ensure that similar violations do not occur in the future. The university’s leadership is focused on implementing measures to prevent future infractions and restoring confidence in its football program.

NFL and Jalen Hurts Light Up Handover to Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028

League Captures Excitement Around LA28, Which Will Feature Men’s and Women’s Flag Football

NEW YORK — AUG. 5, 2024 — As Paris 2024 continues, the spotlight after the Closing Ceremony will quickly shift to the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 (LA28) and the excitement around the official inclusion of men’s and women’s flag football on the LA28 sports program.

To celebrate this moment, the NFL, in partnership with the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) and LA28, launched an epic handover spot “Light It Up,” featuring Philadelphia Eagles quarterback and Global Flag Football Ambassador Jalen Hurts. The video, reminiscent of the iconic archer lighting the Olympic torch with a flaming arrow at the Olympic Games Barcelona 1992 Games, shows Hurts igniting the LA Coliseum torch with a flaming football, signaling flag as an official sport at LA28.

“The Olympic handover from Paris to Los Angeles is an amazing opportunity to have our global flag ambassador Jalen Hurts kickstart the excitement around the inclusion of men’s and women’s flag football in the 2028 program,” said Peter O’Reilly, executive vice president of club business, international and league events. “As one of the fastest growing sports globally, flag football has incredible momentum, and LA28 will spotlight the sport at the highest level and on the world’s biggest stage.”

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced in October 2023 that flag football would be included on the LA28 Olympic sports program. Its inclusion, led by efforts of the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) and supported by the NFL, showcases an aspirational new pathway to elite play and the incredible development of the sport globally.

“As we celebrate the successes of Paris 2024 and the ball is thrown to LA28, we have no doubt flag football is going to light up the Games when it makes its debut in four years’ time,” said IFAF President, Pierre Trochet. “Young, fast, creative and played by outstanding athletes, including our global flag football ambassador Jalen Hurts, the format is the perfect fit for the Games of a new generation. Together with our partners the NFL, we share a commitment to driving the international development of American football forward and believe that flag’s inclusion in Los Angeles will further accelerate the extraordinary participation growth we are seeing worldwide.”

In addition to flag football’s debut at the Olympic Games in four years, the NFL and IFAF are spotlighting the football format throughout this summer. First, the world’s premiere youth flag football tournament, the NFL Flag Championships, saw 2,800 players from around the world compete in Hall of Fame Village in Canton, Ohio. Last week, the NFL also announced the 2025 Pro Bowl Games will return to Orlando, Fl., where the league’s top players will compete in on-field and off-field skills competitions and in an action-packed flag football game at Camping World Stadium. Later this month, elite flag football talent representing 32 nations across five continents will converge on the biggest-ever IFAF World Flag Football Championships in Lahti, Finland.

Played by an estimated 20 million people in more than 100 countries across 6 continents, flag football is a short, fast, non-contact and gender-equal format. It is the most inclusive and accessible format of football, played by people of all ages and genders, with women and girls driving some of the sport’s fastest growth.

Carolina Panthers Success Will Come as a Surprise to Many

The first overall pick often possesses the potential to alter the trajectory of a franchise. In football, teams meticulously craft their rosters around the strengths of their top draft pick. The ultimate goal is capturing a Super Bowl title. This approach has yielded success for numerous teams. The Carolina Panthers exemplified this strategy when they made a blockbuster trade to acquire Bryce Young. He was widely regarded as a future superstar in the NFL.

Before the 2023 NFL Draft, Bryce Young was heralded as the premier talent in the draft class. His exceptional performances at the University of Alabama, both in the air and on the ground, made him the consensus first-overall pick. With his unparalleled ability to evade defenders and execute plays, Young seemed almost unstoppable. Recognizing his potential, the Panthers’ front office conducted a thorough analysis, leading them to trade away star receiver D.J. Moore and two future first-round picks to secure the 2021 Heisman Trophy winner.

Young’s rookie season with the Panthers, however, was somewhat underwhelming at first glance. He threw for 2,877 yards, with 11 touchdowns and ten interceptions. Despite his talent, Young faced considerable challenges, including being sacked a staggering 62 times, the second-highest total in the league. Additionally, the lack of quality offensive weapons hindered his ability to fully showcase his skills in a highly competitive conference.

As the Panthers were mathematically eliminated from playoff contention, the organization immediately began strategizing for the next season. The team made several significant moves to bolster their offensive capabilities. The acquisitions included wide receiver Diontae Johnson and offensive lineman Robert Hunt. These additions were aimed at providing Young with a more robust supporting cast, enhancing his chances of leading the team to a postseason appearance.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Panthers made strategic improvements as well, including the signing of safety Jordan Fuller and linebacker Josey Jewell. These additions were intended to fortify the defense and complement the team’s overall strategy for the upcoming season. Off the field, the Panthers undertook notable organizational changes, including the hiring of head coach Dave Canales. Canales brings a wealth of coaching experience and is expected to play a crucial role in developing Young’s talents and guiding him toward reaching his full potential.

Additionally, the Panthers made a strong showing in the draft, selecting wide receiver Xavier Legette with the 32nd pick. With these strategic moves and an enhanced roster, the Panthers are well-positioned to compete for the NFC South title in the upcoming season. The combination of a revamped team, a seasoned head coach, and a promising draft class sets the stage for an exciting and potentially transformative season for Carolina.

2025 Pro Bowl Games Presented by Verizon Will Return to Orlando

All-Star Event Will Feature 88 of League’s Top Players at Camping World Stadium, Which Has Hosted Five Pro Bowls Previously

NEW YORK — August 1, 2024 — The NFL announced Orlando, Fl., will host the 2025 Pro Bowl Games presented by Verizon.

The multi-day AFC vs NFC event will feature 88 of the NFL’s top players as they show off their on-field and off-field skills in unique competitions and compete in action-packed flag football at Camping World Stadium on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2025. Players will have the opportunity to celebrate the season’s accomplishments in a fun, memorable way, surrounded by their families and fans. ESPN and ABC will return to broadcast the event.

“The Pro Bowl Games presented by Verizon celebrates the biggest stars in the NFL in a format that’s fun, competitive and accessible to fans – with flag football at its core. The players helped create this new format two years ago, and each year we add new elements and surprises. We’re thrilled to bring this multi-day, all-star event back to Orlando, which has established itself as a beloved destination for our players, their families and NFL fans from around the country and the world,” said Peter O’Reilly, NFL executive vice president of events, club business. “Orlando has a history of hosting many successful Pro Bowls, and we look forward to partnering with the city, the county and Florida Citrus Sports once again to raise the bar on our all-star celebration for our players, their families and our fans.”

Orlando has hosted five Pro Bowls in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2024. This year’s event will feature events across Central Florida, including fan experiences that will celebrate the football season and bring fans close to their favorite clubs and players.

“We’re proud to have the Pro Bowl Games back at Camping World Stadium in 2025,” said Florida Citrus Sports CEO Steve Hogan. “Hosting this incredible showcase event for the sixth time in nine seasons is a remarkable achievement for Orlando and reinforces our standing as the top destination for sports and entertainment events. We’re grateful for the partnership with the National Football League and for the support of our leaders at City and Orange County.”

“We’re welcoming a world-class event with the NFL’s greatest athletes and their families to our vibrant community, showcasing our commitment to excellence and our ability to host some of our nation’s biggest sporting events and unforgettable experiences,” said The Honorable Mayor Demings, Orange County.

“We’re thrilled that the NFL Pro Bowl Games are returning to Orlando. As the nation’s top sports destination, our community is looking forward to again welcoming the NFL’s best players, their families and fans from around the nation,” added The Honorable Buddy Dyer, City of Orlando.

Last year, more than 55,000 fans attended the 2024 Pro Bowl Games in Orlando, and 6 million viewers tuned in across Disney, ESPN, ABC, Disney XD and digital. The skills challenges on Thursday averaged 1.2 million viewers on ESPN in primetime, up 9% for the program the year before, and the event was the most viewed Pro Bowl ever on social, with social video views up 12% from last year.

Helping to drive the success of the 2024 Pro Bowl Games was the star-powered coaching lineup, which featured Peyton and Eli Manning as head coaches, Ray Lewis and DeMarcus Ware as defensive coordinators, and Wes Welker and Keenan McCardell as offensive coordinators for the AFC and NFC respectively. The NFC ultimately prevailed over the AFC, solidifying back-to-back victories since the NFL reimagined the format of the all-star game.

As a result of feedback from players, teams and fans, the NFL reimagined the Pro Bowl as The Pro Bowl Games in 2023, introducing an entirely new format that featured a mix of live and taped skills competitions and spotlighted flag football as a critical part of the sport’s future.

Flag football continues to be a strategic priority for the league. In partnership with RCX Sports, the NFL’s flag football operating partner, the league will integrate the football format throughout the Pro Bowl Games as a celebration of all levels – from youth to the NFL’s best.

In addition to the AFC vs NFC flag games played by the Pro Bowl players, the inaugural NFL FLAG Championships presented by Toyota, organized with RCX Sports, recently took place from July 18-21 at the Hall of Fame Village in Canton. As the world’s premiere youth flag football tournament, the event featured almost 2,500 players. Over 240 teams of girls and boys from across the country represented all 32 NFL clubs, and for the first time, an international division made up of 14U athletes from around the world also competed, with six teams from Australia, Canada, China, Germany, Great Britain and Mexico. As the broadcast partner of the NFL FLAG Championships, ESPN announced the event reached 5 million fans over the weekend.

“Recently, we saw immense success at our inaugural NFL Flag Championships, where top players from the US and around the world competed,” said Stephanie Kwok, NFL vice president and head of flag football. “Looking ahead to Orlando, we’re thrilled to celebrate flag at the elite level, as the league’s best athletes enjoy this fast-paced, exciting game.”

Flag football is one of the world’s fastest-growing sports disciplines, played by over 20 million in more than 100 countries, across every continent. It is the most inclusive and accessible format of football, played by people of all ages and genders, with women and girls driving some of the fastest growth.

Further into the season, the NFL will provide the schedule and additional details surrounding the 2025 Pro Bowl Games presented by Verizon.

NFL Encourages Voting and Civic Engagement Through NFL Votes

NFL Votes is a League-Wide, Nonpartisan Voting Initiative to Inspire the NFL Family to Participate in the Democratic Process

NEW YORK – Aug.1, 2024 – The key to a healthy and vibrant democracy is active civic engagement among citizens, which is why the National Football League is encouraging the collective NFL family, including fans, to make their voices heard and cast a ballot in this year’s election cycle and beyond.

During the 2024-2025 NFL season, the NFL, its clubs, and players will come together and activate NFL Votes, including on the field during Weeks 8 and 9 of the regular season. This league-wide, nonpartisan initiative was launched alongside the NFL Players Association in 2020 and encourages voting and civic engagement throughout the NFL and its communities. NFL Votes is focused on driving awareness and participation around three key components of the electoral process: (1) voter education; (2) voter registration; and (3) voter activation.

NFL Votes will come to life through a national public awareness campaign highlighting the importance of civic engagement, with other key activations and touchpoints continuing throughout the first half of the NFL season and culminating on Election Day on November 5.

“The NFL has an unparalleled ability to bring people together around the game of football,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. “We recognize our privileged position as a national unifier and are committed to using our platform to encourage the entire NFL family to make their voices heard and help direct our country’s future.”

Show Up Big & Register | NFL Votes

Public Awareness Campaign

Starting today, an NFL Votes public awareness campaign will launch nationwide featuring two video spots. The first will debut during the NFL’s 2024 Pro Football Hall of Fame Game when the Chicago Bears take on the Houston Texans and will encourage eligible voters to check their local registration deadlines and ensure they are registered to vote ahead of the upcoming election cycle. To view the first spot, click here. The second spot, which will focus on voter turnout, will air later this fall.

Several NFL players and Legends will be featured in the spots, including Kelvin Beachum (Arizona Cardinals); Dion Dawkins (Buffalo Bills); Adam Thielen (Carolina Panthers); Raheem Mostert (Miami Dolphins); Kayvon Thibodeaux (New York Giants); Austin Ekeler (Washington Commanders); and NFL Legend Andrew Whitworth.

An NFL “NFL Vota” public awareness campaign will also debut alongside the first national spot, inspiring eligible voters in the Latino community to participate in the country’s democratic process. The spot will feature Dave Canales, head coach of the Carolina Panthers. For more information on NFL Vota in Spanish, click here.

Club Activations and Events

Throughout the season, all 32 NFL clubs will host activations and events to support civic engagement within their local communities, funded in part by grants from the NFL Foundation. Individual club activations will include:

  • The Kansas City Chiefs will partner with the other local professional sports teams in the region, including the Kansas City Royals, Sporting Kansas City and the Kansas City Current, to host a city-wide voter registration drive and civic education day across three locations in both Missouri and Kansas.
  • The Buffalo Bills will collaborate with its local Board of Elections to host an interactive voter and poll worker registration drive at their first two home games of the regular season.
  • The Seattle Seahawks “12s Vote” initiative includes a wide array of efforts to increase voter participation including educational outreach and targeted engagement, public service announcement collaboration with the Washington Secretary of State, internal team registration goals, and hosting an election center at Lumen Field in partnership with King County Elections. Seahawks.com/12sVote was created as a resource center for fans as well.

All NFL clubs offered the use of their respective stadiums or practice facilities for election-related activities, including as voter registration, ballot drop-off, early voting, or Election Day sites. The stadiums that will be used for election-related activities will be announced on a rolling basis. Clubs will also display in-stadium NFL Votes assets and branding during Weeks 8 and/or 9 of the NFL regular season.

All NFL league and club personnel, including players, coaches and staff, will be required to participate in a mandatory “Voting 101″ education course. This session will provide thousands of participants with a broad overview of the electoral process and voting requirements, including information on voter registration.

National Partners

To support NFL Votes, the league has partnered with several national nonpartisan organizations working to foster a more inclusive and engaged voting population. The NFL will leverage its platform to provide these organizations with the resources needed to help advance their missions.

  • I am a voter is a nonpartisan organization that aims to create a cultural shift around voting and civic engagement by unifying around a central truth: democracy works best when we all participate.
  • RISE is a national nonpartisan organization that educates and empowers the sports community to champion social justice and improve race relations. Through its RISE to Vote initiative, the group engages with and empowers teams, leagues, and athletes to get more involved, make a difference, and inspire fans to be civically active.
  • ROCK the Vote is a nonpartisan, non-profit organization dedicated to building the political power of young people. The organization leverages technology, innovation and research-driven programs to reach each new generation and ensure they can vote and be represented in our democracy.
  • Vet the Vote is a national nonpartisan campaign designed to recruit veterans and military family members to become the next generation of poll workers. Vet the Vote is leading the way in supporting safe and secure elections, helping to show that it’s still possible for Americans to work together in patriotic service.

League Events

NFL Votes will also be activated around key tentpole events, including the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio and the league’s annual primetime kickoff game on Thursday, September 5 when the defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs host the Baltimore Ravens at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. At both events, the NFL will work with national and local partners to help fans register to vote.

In addition, earlier this summer, the NFL partnered with BET Media Group and the Players Coalition to host several NFL Votes activations at the BETX Fan Fest, including a live panel discussion with NFL players and Legends about the importance of voter engagement in the Black community.
