What’s the Best Landing Spot for 49ers Star Brandon Aiyuk?
Since the start of the offseason, Brandon Aiyuk’s name has been a topic of trade rumors involving the San Francisco 49ers. Aiyuk has made it clear that he desires a new contract elsewhere. It leaves fans and analysts speculating about his next destination. Although there remains a possibility that he could stay with the 49ers, several teams have shown significant interest. It includes the Washington Commanders, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Los Angeles Chargers.
Among the potential suitors, the Washington Commanders are viewed as the most plausible trade partner for Aiyuk and the 49ers. General Manager Adam Peters is expected to make a compelling offer. Potentially including a second-round pick, to bring Aiyuk back to the team where he had a standout collegiate career at Arizona State. Aiyuk is coming off a career-best season—boasting 75 receptions, 1,342 yards, and seven touchdowns. He would seamlessly integrate with Washington’s offensive arsenal. His addition would provide a significant boost to the Commanders’ receiving corps, which already features standout players like Terry McLaurin.
If Washington can strike a deal with San Francisco, the Commanders’ offense could become a major threat in the league. Despite the Commanders’ strong interest, the Pittsburgh Steelers could present a more attractive trade package. Pittsburgh might be willing to offer multiple draft picks along with a high-end defensive lineman to entice the 49ers into making a deal.
Such a trade would enable the Steelers to pair Aiyuk with George Pickens. It would significantly enhance the offensive options available to starting quarterback Russell Wilson. This combination could be a game-changer for Pittsburgh, providing Wilson with an impressive array of weapons for the upcoming season. The Los Angeles Chargers also stand out as a team with a pressing need for Aiyuk’s talents. Competing in the highly competitive AFC West, the Chargers are eager to strengthen their roster to keep pace with their division rivals.
They could propose a package that includes a future second-round pick and a fourth-round pick to secure Aiyuk. With newly hired head coach Jim Harbaugh at the helm, the Chargers lack a proven veteran wide receiver, and Aiyuk could effectively fill that void. His presence would be a valuable asset as Los Angeles seeks to enhance its offensive capabilities. Although there are other teams that might pursue Aiyuk, Washington appears to be the most fitting destination for several reasons.
The Commanders possess a high draft pick that could be enticing to the 49ers. Aiyuk’s wish to play alongside rookie Jayden Daniels could be fulfilled there. Additionally, Aiyuk would be a key player in Washington’s new offensive scheme under offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury. Kingsbury, known for his innovative offensive strategies, would likely thrive with Aiyuk as part of his roster. If Aiyuk is traded to Washington, the team might also offer him a long-term contract extension, making it a potentially ideal situation for both player and team.

Derrick Rose: The Biggest ‘What If’ In NBA History
In the annals of basketball history, numerous players have experienced significant setbacks due to injuries. The Bulls have experienced this twice It’s a sobering reality that underscores the physical demands of the sport. Lonzo Ball has been out of the NBA for over a year. Despite extensive recovery efforts, athletes are ultimately constrained by the limits of their bodies. Among these stories, Derrick Rose stands out as a poignant example of a promising career altered by injury.

Drafted as the first-overall pick by the Chicago Bulls in 2008, Rose was anticipated to become a transformative force in the NBA. His potential was evident. He was a five-star recruit and showcased his skills as a Memphis Tiger. The point guard averaged 14.9 points, 4.7 assists, and 4.5 rebounds per game during his single collegiate season. His impressive performance earned him numerous all-conference honors and elevated him to the top of NBA draft boards.
As a rookie, Rose quickly captured the league’s attention with his remarkable blend of speed, agility, and basketball IQ. He was named Rookie of the Year after averaging 16.8 points and 6.3 assists per game across 81 appearances. While he could no longer dominate as he once did, Rose managed to reinvent himself as a valuable contributor off the bench. He added value to the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Detroit Pistons. This allows them to benefit financially from their athletic skills and popularity while still in school. Additionally, players are exploring entrepreneurship and brand-building opportunities. As they become more aware of their personal brands, they will seek to monetize them. This could lead to increased fan engagement and even opportunities beyond football.

Recruiting Dynamics
NIL deals have become a critical factor in recruiting, as top programs leverage their market size and connections to attract high-profile athletes. Schools in larger media markets or with strong alumni networks may have an edge in securing top talent. Popular schools that can generate significant revenue through their football programs tend to hold the advantage. Georgia, Alabama, Texas, Michigan, and Ohio State are a few examples.

Team Dynamics and Locker Room Culture
NIL deals could lead to disparities within teams, with some players earning a significant amount of money while others earn little or nothing. This could create tension or affect team chemistry. The transfer process may increasingly resemble college “free agency”, as I have mentioned before. College sports may now start to resemble their professional counterparts. Players might gain more influence over their careers, leading to increased movement through the transfer portal. This will be more prevalent especially if they believe they can secure better NIL opportunities elsewhere.

Changes in College Football Economics
The rise of NIL could introduce new revenue streams for schools and their athletic departments. They may seek partnerships with companies to help their athletes secure potential deals. This shift in power dynamics could challenge the influence of traditional revenue sources, such as TV contracts and conference alignments. Individual athletes now have greater economic power and the ability to generate income independently.
NIL Through the Years
- July 1, 2021 marked the start of this landmark policy. At the time, only 28 states had NIL laws passed and in effect, including 12 on July 1. Three main guidelines were established, and other states were working through their own legislation.
- In 2022, the NIL Summit introduced the NIL Awards to reward student-athletes, colleges, and certain brands/organizations for the best use of name, image, and likeness.
- That same year, the NCAA Board of Directors issued NIL guidance to ensure NIL deals would not be forbidden during the player recruiting process.
- 2023 saw the launch of the NIL Marketing Partnerships Report.
- NCAA President Charlie Baker created a letter with proposed NIL regulation changes on December 5, 2023.
- A day later, three US Senators and a US Representative reintroduced a significant federal bill. According to them, college athletes would be classified as employees with the right to unionize and would be granted certain rights.
- As of 2024, only 33 states, along with the District of Columbia, have some form of NIL legislation. Delaware still has a law regulating the actions of student-athletes’ agents, however. Alabama is the only state to repeal its NIL Act.

- Seven of the 17 states without legislation at least have high school NIL laws: Alaska, Idaho (with some stipulations), Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, North Dakota, and Rhode Island.
- Quarterback Jaden Rashada sued Florida head coach Billy Napier and Gators booster Hugh Hatchcock on May 21, 2024. This was due to a failed NIL deal after he flipped his commitment from Miami to Florida.
- May 23, 2024 was another historic day for college athletes. The NCAA and the “Power 5” conferences decided that players are allowed to be paid directly.
- On August 1, 2024, the “core guarantee” rules, unanimously adopted in April 2023, went into effect.

Will NIL Threaten Tradition?
NIL in college football is a positive development for athletes, but it comes with potential drawbacks. While it empowers athletes and opens new opportunities, it also presents challenges in maintaining competitive balance and the tradition of college sports. What makes college football special is that athletes play for the love of the game, not for money. This dynamic is changing, whether people want to acknowledge it or not.

My hope is that athletes don’t lose sight of their education and degree aspirations amid the potential earnings. At the same time, they should continue focusing on developing their skills for the next level, a reality for only 1% of these athletes. NIL should be embraced, but we must not get away from the history and tradition of the game.
Top 5 College Football Contenders
There are many extremely talented teams heading into the upcoming college football season. This year will be different, as 12 teams will make the playoffs. This change may allow a few teams to suffer one or even two losses but still make the playoffs. Here is a list of my top five championship contenders for 2024-25:

Ohio State Buckeyes
Ohio State suffered yet another disappointing loss to Michigan last year, prolonging their wait to win that final game. However, head coach Ryan Day has practically won every other game so far besides those against Michigan. The Buckeyes are still filled with five-star talent across their roster and will be in championship contention again this year. Watch out for recruits such as WR Jeremiah Smith and DE Eddrick Houston. Assuming everyone remains healthy, they will be a tough out for every other team in this new College Football Playoff (CFP) format.

Alabama Crimson Tide
There is still a championship standard at Alabama, even without Nick Saban at the helm. New head coach Kalen DeBoer has many in Tuscaloosa counting on him. Despite the big shoes to fill, I still expect the Crimson Tide to make the playoffs and be a serious championship threat. DeBoer had a great coaching record at Washington, reaching the CFP National Championship last year but falling short to Michigan. With quarterback Jalen Milroe–a projected 2025 top draft pick–returning for another season, Alabama should be a team to keep an eye on.

Michigan Wolverines
After winning the national title last year, the Wolverines have their sights set on repeating. Michigan did lose QB J.J. McCarthy to the NFL, so it will be interesting to see who will lead them under center. Redshirt sophomore Alex Orji should be the favorite to start this year. He has a combination of strength, size, and athleticism perhaps never before seen in a Michigan quarterback. With a very talented roster, featuring DT Mason Graham and TE Colston Loveland, the Wolverines should make a deep run this year.

Texas Longhorns
Texas started last season strong, most notably beating Alabama on the road by 10 points. The Longhorns have one of the deepest teams in the country, especially at QB. Quinn Ewers is expected to start, and he has more support this year. Top wide receiver Isaiah Bond transferred from Alabama and is poised to make a significant impact. Not only do they gain one of the best wide receivers in the country, but they also take him from a direct rival. This is especially significant now that Texas is officially part of the SEC. I believe the Longhorns will be ready for the rigorous schedule that SEC schools face every season.

Georgia Bulldogs
The Bulldogs fell short of a three-peat last season, suffering a disappointing loss to Alabama in the SEC Championship Game. That defeat cost Georgia a spot in the playoffs. Quarterback Carson Beck is back for another season and will be a contender for the Heisman Trophy. With Nick Saban retired, a strong argument can be made that Kirby Smart is now the best coach in the country.
The Bulldogs had the top recruiting class in 2024, featuring five-star recruits like cornerback Ellis Robinson IV and local talent K.J. Bolden at safety. They should be welcome additions to one of the nation’s top defenses. With a projected 2025 first-rounder in Beck leading the way, UGA has no excuses for success this season.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State women’s soccer opens the 2024 season by hosting No. 24 Duke Thursday evening at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The match will kick off at 7 p.m. and be streamed on B1G+.

- This is the Buckeyes eighth match up against the Blue Devils. Duke leads the all-time series 6-1-0.
- Ohio State’s lone win against Duke was in 2014 at a neutral site in Chapel Hill, N.C., when Alexis Degler scored the game winner in the 67th minute.
- Ohio State is 22-24-1 all-time against current ACC teams
- Ohio State is in its 32nd season and its 28th under the direction of head coach Lori Walker Hock.
- The Buckeyes have 39 wins all-time against Top 25 ranked teams. Two of those wins came last season over No. 16 Indiana and No. 12 Wisconsin.
- Fifth-year Peyton McNamara, senior Sydney Jones and sophomore Amanda Schlueter were all named Big Ten Players to Watch this season.
- The Buckeyes were predicted to finish ninth in the Big Ten by the league’s 18 head coaches.
- Senior forward Kailyn Dudukovich is the team’s leading returning scorer as she has 25 career goals and 59 career points. Both totals are in the Top 15 in program history.
- Dudukovich is coming off a 27-point season last year as junior. That was the 9th most in a season in program history and the most since Sammy Edwards had 28 points in 2016.
- Sophomore forward Amanda Schlueter had a great freshman season, scoring six goals and tallying seven assists. Her 19 points were the sixth-most by a freshman in OSU history.
- Junior goalkeeper Molly Pritchard started all 19 matches last season and has appeared in 38 matches over her first two season. She made 78 saves last season and had three shutouts.
UCLA Selected as 2024 Big Ten Women’s Soccer Favorite

ROSEMONT, Ill. (August 13, 2024) – UCLA has been chosen as the favorite to win the 2024 Big Ten Conference Women’s Soccer championship, based on the annual preseason poll released on Tuesday. The poll results were determined by a vote from the conference’s 18 head coaches. Ranked No. 11 in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Top 25 Poll, the Bruins were projected to finish first as part of their inaugural season in the Big Ten. In 2023, the Bruins won their 14th Pac-12 Conference title with a 10-0-1 conference record and a 16-2-1 record overall.

UCLA returns seven starters, including All-American and two-time Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year Lilly Reale. Penn State was selected to finish second after ending the 2023 season with a 16-3-4 overall record, which included the program’s first National Quarterfinal appearance since 2018. The Nittany Lions extended their NCAA Tournament appearance streak to 29 consecutive bids, the second-longest active streak in the nation. Penn State was selected No. 4 in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Top 25.
Michigan State and Nebraska, who shared the Big Ten Championship in 2023 were projected to finish third and fourth, respectively. In the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Top 25, Nebraska was selected sixth and Michigan State 13th. Also among the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Top 25 were Wisconsin (19th), USC (23rd), Iowa (25th). The conference also unveiled the 2024 Big Ten Players to watch List on Tuesday, as selected by the league’s coaches.
Included in the list are 20 student-athletes who earned all-conference recognition in 2023. Among last season’s honorees are 2023 Big Ten Midfielder of the Year Justina Gaynor from Michigan State, Goalkeeper of the Year Jamie Gerstenberg from Indiana and Freshman of the Year Bella Najera from Michigan State. Also on the list is Pac-12 Defender of the Year Lilly Reale from UCLA and Pac-12 Freshman of the Year Maribel Flores of USC. The 2024 Big Ten Women’s Soccer season will kick off this week, as all 18 teams will take the pitch on Thursday, Aug. 15.
