USC Opens Season with Historic 73-13 Victory Over Missouri State

The USC Trojans wasted no time making a statement in their season opener, delivering their highest-scoring performance since 1930 with a 73-13 rout of Missouri State at the LA Memorial Coliseum. Missouri State briefly held the lead after kicking a field goal on its opening drive, but USC quickly seized control and never looked back. By halftime, the Trojans had poured in 42 points, showcasing their offensive depth and defensive dominance against a Bears squad making its debut as a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) program in Conference USA.

Quarterback Jayden Maiava set the tone early, displaying poise and command in contrast to some of last season’s inconsistencies. He completed 15 of 18 passes for 295 yards and added two rushing touchdowns. With Maiava steering the offense, the Trojans scored six first-half touchdowns and built a commanding lead. Missouri State’s lone highlight of the half came when wide receiver Tristian Gardner scored the Bears’ only touchdown late in the second quarter.

Freshman quarterback Husan Longstreet took over in the second half and looked flawless in his collegiate debut. Longstreet went a perfect 9-for-9 passing, throwing one touchdown while also adding two rushing scores. His efficiency and confidence only deepened USC’s offensive dominance and provided a glimpse of the team’s promising future behind Maiava and the young playmakers developing in Lincoln Riley’s system.

The Trojans spread the wealth, with nine different players finding the end zone. Standout performances came from wide receiver Makai Lemon, safety Bishop Fitzgerald, and running backs Waymond Jordan and King Miller. USC also scored on defense, underscoring the complete, complementary football Riley said he expected to see.

“That shows some of the versatility of this team,” head coach Lincoln Riley said after the game. “We were able to get a lot of different guys involved. We (also) scored off defense. It was exciting to see. I anticipated that we would play something like this. It’s kind of what I’ve seen on the practice field. I expected we would come out and play well on all sides and be complementary, and we did that.”

Missouri State, which managed 224 yards of total offense compared to USC’s 597, struggled to match the Trojans’ physicality and speed. Quarterback Jacob Clark completed 16 of 24 passes, but the Bears were largely stifled once USC found its rhythm. “Tough night for the Bears. Really, really good football team,” Missouri State head coach Ryan Beard said. “When you look at their roster and you look at their sheer size, strength all across the roster, it’s a good learning experience for us. Obviously wish the score could have been a little different. This is the league you’re stepping into.

When you go to FBS, this is what the top, best FBS looks like. So I think it was a good view for everybody to see. USC (1-0) will look to keep momentum rolling when it hosts Georgia Southern on Sept. 6 at the Coliseum. Missouri State (0-1) heads to Marshall on the same date in search of its first FBS win.

Tigers Roar in Season Opener: Missouri Dominates Central Arkansas 61-6

0
St. Louis Post Dispatch

On a warm Thursday night in Columbia, Missouri, an electric crowd at a sold-out Memorial Stadium watched the Tigers roar into the 2025 season with a statement victory. Missouri dominated from start to finish, dismantling Central Arkansas 61-6. The biggest takeaway? The Tigers’ offense proved it can move the ball at will.

The opening quarter was a little uneven as the unit searched for rhythm, but once the wrinkles were ironed out, Mizzou looked unstoppable. Quarterback Beau Pribula left no doubt that he is the man to lead this team. He officially won the starting job in unsettling fashion after Sam Horn suffered a leg injury that will sideline him indefinitely. Still, Pribula wasted no time showing his full skill set—dropping accurate deep balls, finding checkdowns, and making plays with his legs. His 31-yard scramble for a touchdown set the tone for a complete performance.

Poised in the pocket and confident on key downs, Pribula finished the night 23-of-28 for 283 yards. He wasn’t short on weapons. Wide receiver Marquis Johnson lit up the secondary with a 49-yard touchdown grab to open the scoring, while Mississippi State transfer Kevin Coleman Jr. added steady production, averaging eight yards per catch. The receiving corps consistently created separation, giving Pribula clean reads and easy decisions.

On the ground, transfer running back Ahmad Hardy was just as impressive. The former Louisiana-Monroe star showed off his power and vision, bouncing off tacklers and turning small gains into big plays. Once the offensive line settled in, Hardy found his rhythm, averaging 10 yards per carry. He capped his debut with 100 rushing yards, a touchdown, and a highlight 44-yard run that had the crowd on its feet.

Defensively, Missouri was just as dominant. The Tigers held Central Arkansas to two conversions on 13 third-down attempts and a mere 73 passing yards. Quarterback Luther Richesson was under constant pressure, completing just 13 of 23 passes and tossing an interception. Up front, the defensive line gradually wore down the Bears, finishing with six tackles for loss as the unit rallied to the ball with relentless pursuit. The only blemish came in the tackling department, where a handful of missed stops will give the coaching staff something to emphasize in practice.

With the tune-up complete, the real test arrives next week. The Tigers will welcome the Kansas Jayhawks to Memorial Stadium in the long-awaited revival of the Border War rivalry. Mizzou looks ready for the challenge—but in a rivalry this emotional, nothing comes easy.

Missouri Tigers Football Preview 2025: Players to Keep an Eye on in Week One

1
Photo Cred ESPN

The Missouri Tigers will open their 2025 college football season on Thursday, Aug. 28, when they host the Central Arkansas Bears at Memorial Stadium in Columbia, Missouri. With kickoff just days away, the Tigers still face several pressing questions. Who will win the quarterback battle? Who steps up to replace Luther Burden III? And can Mizzou once again rely on its defense to carry the load?

Head Coach Eli Drinkwitz made it clear that the starting quarterback job is still undecided. Beau Pribula, a transfer from Penn State, is the headline newcomer. The dual-threat QB arrived in Columbia with a reported $1.5 million NIL deal. He brings both experience and production with nine passing touchdowns, 10 rushing scores, and just one interception across three seasons with the Nittany Lions. Now he takes center stage. His ability to extend plays with his legs gives him a dynamic edge.

Challenging Pribula is redshirt junior Sam Horn. Though limited to four appearances over the past two years, Horn has patiently waited behind Brady Cook and now has an opportunity to prove himself. His numbers — 54 passing yards, one touchdown, and one interception — are modest, but his familiarity with the program could serve him well in the competition. At receiver, the departure of Luther Burden III leaves the Tigers with a glaring void.

In fact, all three starting wideouts from last season must be replaced. Leading the charge is transfer Kevin Coleman Jr., who arrives from Mississippi State after a breakout year with 932 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. His precise route running and separation skills should make him a reliable No. 1 option. Joining him is junior Marquis Johnson, best remembered for his 122-yard, one-touchdown performance in last year’s Music City Bowl win over Iowa.

Tight end Brett Norfleet also looks primed for a bigger role; with 432 career receiving yards already, he gives the Tigers a versatile weapon over the middle. Defensively, Missouri is in much better shape. The Tigers return significant production up front, where their defensive line could emerge as one of the nation’s best. Edge rushers Zion Young, Darris Smith, and Georgia transfer Damon Wilson II headline a group that brings both speed and power. On the interior, returning starters and a deep rotation make the front four the heart of this defense.

The secondary was last year’s Achilles heel, but Drinkwitz attacked the portal aggressively. Cornerback Stephen Hall (Washington State) and safeties Jalen Catalon (UNLV) and Mose Phillips II (Virginia Tech) add experience and playmaking ability to a group that needed an overhaul. Perhaps the most exciting newcomer overall isn’t on defense, but in the backfield. Running back Ahmad Henry, who transferred from Louisiana-Monroe, was the top freshman rusher in FBS last year with 1,351 yards.

Known for his balance and toughness, Henry should fit seamlessly into offensive coordinator Kirby Moore’s zone-run scheme and give Mizzou an immediate impact weapon. The pieces are there, but how quickly Missouri can bring them together will define the season. After Central Arkansas, the Tigers jump straight into a bitter rivalry showdown with Kansas — a matchup that could set the tone for everything to come. With new faces and fresh talent, Drinkwitz’s squad must find its rhythm fast if it hopes to build on last year’s success.

Sunday, August 31st – Virginia Tech vs. #13 South Carolina (Atlanta)

South Carolina Gamecocks v Virginia Tech Hokies | Week 1 | College Football 26

Photo Cred: YouTube

The spotlight shifts to Mercedes-Benz Stadium for another marquee ACC–SEC showdown on the final Sunday before the NFL kicks off. South Carolina, fresh off a 9–3 campaign that included multiple top-25 victories, just narrowly missed out on the 12-team College Football Playoff last season. The Gamecocks return with high expectations behind star dual-threat quarterback LaNorris Sellers and rising defensive centerpiece Dylan Stewart, a former five-star edge rusher with NFL potential.

Head coach Shane Beamer faces an especially emotional challenge, squaring off against the program his father, Frank Beamer, built into a national brand. Virginia Tech enters 2025 eager to shake off a frustrating 6–7 season that was plagued by close losses to Vanderbilt, Rutgers, and several ACC rivals. With quarterback Kyron Drones showing flashes of star power and head coach Brent Pry settling into year three, the Hokies view this matchup as a chance to prove they belong back on the big stage. They’ll have little time to rest either—another SEC test looms the following week, when Vanderbilt heads to Lane Stadium for a revenge-fueled rematch of last year’s opener.

#6 Notre Dame at #10 Miami (FL)

Week 1 closes Sunday night with one of the most anticipated top-ten showdowns of the early season: Notre Dame vs. Miami. The Irish, fresh off a national championship appearance, march into South Beach with playoff ambitions and a roster stacked with talent. Running back Jeremiyah Love headlines the offense, looking to follow up his breakout 2024 campaign with another dominant year.

The Hurricanes, meanwhile, have reloaded in a big way. Former Georgia quarterback Carson Beck transferred in to replace Cam Ward, giving Miami one of the most proven arms in the ACC. Paired with a strong returning defense, the ‘Canes see this game as a launching pad for a playoff push. The matchup also stirs echoes of the legendary “Catholics vs. Convicts” rivalry, most famously remembered for Notre Dame’s dramatic 31–30 win over then-No. 1 Miami in 1988. With both programs firmly in the national conversation again, this clash could have enormous playoff seeding implications by season’s end.

Monday, September 1st – TCU at North Carolina

Week 1, 2025 - TCU vs UNC

Photo Cred: Youtube

Labor Day night provides one final treat as the curtain closes on opening weekend: TCU at North Carolina, in what will be remembered as the official college football debut of Bill Belichick. The legendary NFL coach takes over the Tar Heels with a rebuilt roster headlined by dual-threat transfer quarterback Gio Lopez, who threw for 2,500 yards and rushed for nearly 500 more at South Alabama last season.

TCU enters Chapel Hill after a 9–4 campaign and remains dangerous on both sides of the ball. Quarterback Josh Hoover nearly reached 4,000 passing yards with 27 touchdowns a year ago, and his connection with explosive receiver Eric McAlister gives the Horned Frogs one of the Big 12’s top aerial attacks. Defensively, TCU boasts experienced playmakers across the field, making them a tough out for anyone.

For Belichick, this game is more than just an opener—it’s a moment of intrigue across the football world. How will his decades of NFL success translate to Saturdays in the college game? With Sonny Dykes looking to reestablish TCU as a playoff threat, and UNC stepping into a new era under one of football’s greatest minds, this Monday night matchup promises drama, strategy, and storylines that will resonate long beyond Week 1.
