The Luck of the Irish

Notre Dame quarterback Sam Hartman’s debut was all one could ask for. It left him crediting coaches, the offensive line, running backs, and the defense for their roles. The Irish dominated 42-3 victory over Navy in Ireland’s capital. Hartman had 12,967 passing yards at Wake Forest before he came to Notre Dame. He doesn’t have to wear the pressure of a full career in South Bend like those quarterbacks did.

Hartman threw four touchdowns, including two to Jaden Greathouse, and completed 19 of 23 passes for 251 yards. Notre Dame, ranked 13th, displayed prowess in the air and on the ground. He was able to maintain an undefeated record against Navy in Dublin. Two factors stood out in Hartman’s debut.

The Passing Attack

He gives Notre Dame a dangerous down-field passer. According to Pro Football Focus, Hartman was 3-of-4 for 69 yards and three TDs on passes 20 yards or more. He also spread the ball out to his receivers. Greathouse (three catches, 68 yards, two TDs), Jayden Thomas (four catches, 63 yards), Deion Colzie (three catches, 45 yards, one TD), and Chris Tyree (three catches, 36 yards) put up great numbers.

The O-Line and RB; Navy Falters

Hartman emphasized the offensive line’s protection, allowing him ample time for reads. Leading the rushing attack, Audric Estimé tallied 95 yards on 16 carries, including a one-yard touchdown. Navy’s offense struggled, attempting only one pass in the first half, reflecting its one-dimensional approach. Hartman’s debut tied records for most touchdown passes by a Notre Dame quarterback in their first game with the team.

Notre Dame’s promising performance sets a positive tone for the season, with a favorable schedule ahead. Navy now has a break before facing Wagner on September 9. The impact of this victory on Notre Dame’s ranking remains uncertain, given it was a week zero game against a weaker opponent.

Missouri Gets a Fresh Start Against South Dakota

Photo Cred: SEC football

After going 6-7 a season ago, Missouri will hit the reset button as it hosts South Dakota to open up the 2023 season on Thursday. The Tigers lost four games by one possession in 2022 and they hope to get over the hump as the new season approaches. In order to start off on a high note, Missouri will need to come out victorious against the Coyotes.

One thing to keep an eye out for is the Tigers’ quarterback situation. Missouri head coach Eliah Drinkwitz stated that both Brady Cook and Sam Horn will see the field during the season opener. Cook was the starting QB all season last year, despite suffering a shoulder injury in the Tigers’ Week 2 loss to Kansas State. Horn is emerging as a candidate to lead the offense in his sophomore year. How both QBs perform on Thursday will be interesting to watch.

Missouri’s running back room could be dangerous with the duo of Cody Schrader and Nathaniel Peat. Schrader, who is a transfer from Division II Truman State, was named a captain for this season after a sensational 2022. The St. Louis native ran for 745 yards and nine touchdowns in his first year with the Tigers. Peat, who is a transfer from Stanford, is expected to start the season as RB2. The graduate student RB ran for 438 yards and two touchdowns. He was playing his first season of college football in his hometown of Columbia.

The wide receiver core is what Missouri fans should be very excited to watch on Thursday. Luther Burden III is a name that comes to mind. The sophomore receiver played in all 13 games as a true freshman last year. He recorded 375 yards and six touchdowns. Joining the former five-star recruit is Oklahoma transfer Theo Wease Jr. Wease is coming off an impressive 2022 season, as he finished with 378 yards and four touchdowns. The talented WR played three seasons with the Sooners before transferring to Missouri. The Tigers WR core will also consist of talented receivers such as Mehki Miller and Mookie Cooper.

The Tigers offense will face off against a Coyotes defense that’s looking to improve. South Dakota allowed an average of 29.18 points per game last season when they went 3-8. Their defense also struggled in multiple games, as it allowed 58 points to Northern Iowa and 45 points to Youngstown State. Regardless, the Coyotes did have a couple of strong defensive games, such as a 12-10 victory over Illinois State and a 20-13 win over Missouri State. The leader of South Dakota’s defense is senior linebacker Stephen Hillis, who finished last season with 61 solo tackles and four sacks. Missouri’s offense will also have to deal with defensive back Myles Harden, who led the team in interceptions with three and had 27 solo tackles a season ago. Harden was named to the Preseason Buck Buchanan Award Watch List.

The Coyotes also have talent on the offensive side of the ball. Sophomore QB Aidan Bouman will be the leader of the team. Last season, he threw for 892 yards, eight touchdowns, and just one interception. The Buffalo, Minnesota native was also named to the Missouri Valley Football Conference All-Newcomer team. Travis Theis is the leading returning rusher for the Coyotes this upcoming season. He ended last year with 774 yards and five touchdowns.

The duo of WR Carter Bell and TE JJ Galbreath is one that the Tigers’ defense needs to keep an eye on. Bell had 245 yards and three touchdowns last season, while Galbreath finished with 255 yards and a touchdown. WR Jack Martens is also a player to watch out for the Coyotes offense as well.

Defensively, Missouri should be feeling confident heading into Thursday. The Tigers’ defense put up multiple impressive statistics last year. They were first in the SEC in tackles for loss (7.2/gm), third in rushing defense (125 yds/gm), and fourth in total defense (340.8 yds/gm). The Tigers are bringing back a majority of their defensive production as well. DB Ennis Rakestraw Jr., defensive lineman Realus George Jr., DB Dreyden Norwood, and others will continue to lead the group. Their defense also has some strong additions coming in. Defensive end Joe Moore III joins Missouri from Arizona State, while safety Sidney Williams comes from Florida State.

Kickoff time is set for 7 P.M. Thursday at Faurot Field on SEC Network.

ACC Expansion News

0
Photo Cred: On3.com

The landscape of college sports is ever-evolving, with conferences constantly seeking to enhance their competitive edge. The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) has made significant waves with its expansion strategy, signaling a renewed commitment to fostering athletic excellence and regional rivalries. They may make another splash.

The ACC has been meeting about adding the University of California, Sandford University, and Southern Methodist University. One of the key motivations behind the ACC’s expansion is the elevation of the overall athletic prowess of member schools. By strategically inviting institutions with football traditions, the conference aims to raise its profile on the national stage. The schools that may join aren’t the best programs but could bounce back and bring value. Tradition has been thrown out the window during expansion as it’s all about TV markets.

This move has the potential to create thrilling matchups, enticing fanbases with the promise of fierce rivalries and high-stakes contests. Additionally, expansion can bring about new geographic and cultural dynamics. Dallas and California introduce fresh perspectives and regional flavors to the ACC, making it a more diverse and dynamic conference. Fans can look forward to witnessing storied matchups between these newcomers and established ACC powerhouses, creating an amalgamation of traditions and fan enthusiasm.

From a financial standpoint, the ACC’s expansion holds the potential for increased revenue streams. With new markets and larger fanbases in play, television contracts, sponsorships, and ticket sales are likely to experience a boost. This influx of resources can translate into enhanced facilities, better recruitment efforts, and improved overall infrastructure for member institutions.

As with any significant change, there are challenges to address. Balancing the competitive landscape while maintaining the conference’s identity and values is crucial. Ensuring that the new members align with academic and athletic standards while fostering a sense of unity among the diverse members is a task that requires careful consideration and planning.

The ACC’s recent expansion ushers in a new era of collegiate athletics. If Stanford, and SMU joining the fold, the conference is poised to redefine its competitive landscape, elevate its national standing, and ignite passion among fans. As these institutions become integral parts of the ACC’s story, sports enthusiasts eagerly await the rivalries, upsets, and memorable moments that are sure to follow.

College Football- Week 0/Week 1 Top Games

Photo Cred: On3.com

The 2023 college football season kicks off this Saturday and fans couldn’t be more excited to welcome their favorite sport back after a long offseason! Although Week 0 offers a few games to watch, Week 1 next Saturday is the first full slate of action featuring every FBS team as well as lower levels. With too many games to keep track of, I broke down the top games to watch in Week 0 and Week 1 to kick off the upcoming college football season.

Week 0- Saturday, August 26th

Navy vs. Notre Dame, 2:30 PM on NBC

The first college football game of the 2023 season kicks off at 2:30 PM. It features two of America’s favorite teams battling overseas, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish battling the Navy Midshipmen. 13th-ranked Notre Dame should be heavy favorites over American conference member Navy.

IB Nation Sports Talk: Navy Insider Preview, Sam Hartman's NIL, Freeman On Payne And Sneed - Sports Illustrated Notre Dame Fighting Irish News, Analysis and More

This will be a great way to start the college football season, bringing American traditions, big fanbases, and two different styles of football. Navy’s run-heavy offense will battle new Notre Dame quarterback Sam Hartman in his first game as a member of the Fighting Irish. If none of that excites you, tune in simply because it kicks off what should be an incredible college football season.

Ohio @ San Diego State, 7:00 PM on Fox Sports 1

Next up is a battle featuring two higher-end Group of Five teams battling on the West Coast. The Ohio Bobcats finished with a 10-4 record last season, losing to Toledo in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) championship. However, they did take down Wyoming in the Barstool Sports Arizona Bowl. Meanwhile, the San Diego State Aztecs had a win over MAC champions Toledo and had an up-and-down 7-6 season last season.

The Aztecs were able to be one of the best Group of Five teams in the country in the 2021 season. San Diego State had a 12-2 record and victories over Pac-12 teams Arizona and Utah. Ohio returns quarterback Kurtis Rourke, who had over 3,000 passing yards last season, while SDSU plays great defense. Expect a close game where the Aztecs will be slight favorites at home.

Hawaii @ Vanderbilt, 7:30 PM on SEC Network

I would have picked San Jose State at #6 USC, but the game is on the Pac-12 network. It will be unavailable for many viewers and it should also be a blowout win for USC. There will be plenty of chances to see Heisman trophy-winning quarterback Caleb Williams in action this season, just not during Week 0 against a mismatched opponent. A more intriguing matchup, in my opinion, is Hawaii visiting Vanderbilt. A rematch from last season, Hawaii seeks revenge after losing at home to the Commodores 63-10.

Vanderbilt-Hawaii final score: A historic blowout for the Commodores - Anchor Of Gold

However, they will be 17.5 underdogs visiting an improved SEC squad that went 5-7 last season. Vanderbilt will feature quarterback AJ Swann and receiver Will Sheppard. Hawaii returns quarterback Brayden Schager in the run-and-shoot offense. Star running back Tylan Hines returns as well. In the end, Clark Lea’s Vanderbilt Commodores should open the season with a convincing win against Timmy Chang’s rebuilding Hawaii Rainbow Warriors. This should give Vanderbilt some momentum in the non-conference slate that they will need going against much tougher SEC teams later in the season.

Week 1- Thursday, August 31st

Florida @ Utah, 8:00 PM, ESPN

Shifting ahead to Week 1, the best matchup before a loaded Saturday slate takes place on Thursday night when the Florida Gators visit the Utah Utes. Florida won last season’s matchup against Utah 29-26 in Gainesville but stumbled to a 6-7 record and an embarrassing bowl loss. Meanwhile, Utah rose up to win the Pac-12 championship for the second year in a row.

Late Interception Sends No. 7 Utah Home With Heartbreaking Loss To Florida

Cam Rising’s (the Utes star quarterback) status is still up in the air for this game. He continues to rehab from an injury sustained last season, while Florida will start former Wisconsin Badgers quarterback Graham Mertz. Mertz started three years for the Badgers before transferring to UF. Utah is currently favored by 5 points at home. Assuming Rising suits up, the Utes should be able to avenge last year’s loss to the Gators and start this season with a win.

Saturday, September 2nd

Colorado @ TCU, 12:00 PM, FOX

Although a matchup between a 1-11 Colorado Buffaloes team and the national championship runners-up TCU Horned Frogs may not sound like a compelling game, the storylines in this game are aplenty. Deion Sanders and his reshaped roster will face a tough test as they visit last year’s title game loser at TCU. Colorado will also move to the Big 12 from the Pac-12 next year, along with Utah, Arizona, and Arizona State.

This matchup could play out as a conference game as soon as next season. Fans will get to see how good (or not so good) a new-look Colorado team truly is. They will also get to see how a revamped TCU team that lost a handful of players to the draft will follow up last season’s national championship blowout loss to Georgia. This is the game to watch in the early 12:00 time slot.

Boise State @ Washington, 3:30 PM, ABC

This game pits one of the best Group of Five teams in the nation against the 10th-ranked team in the country. #10 Washington is also a sleeper to win the Pac-12 and possibly sneak into the College Football Playoff. The Boise State Broncos, famous for their blue home turf, are coming off a 10-4 season.

Vegas Bowl Prediction: #19 Boise State vs. Washington Huskies - UW Dawg Pound

They lost in the Mountain West championship to Fresno State but had a bowl win over North Texas in the Frisco Bowl. The Washington Huskies are coming off an 11-2 season and a bowl win over Texas in the Alamo Bowl. Both teams expect to make noise in their own conferences. Seeing how a high-end G5 team does against a high-end Pac-12 team should be a great game to watch in the late afternoon time slot.

West Virginia @ Penn State, 7:30 PM, NBC

You can’t go wrong with a night game in Happy Valley. The seventh-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions head into this season’s opener with a lot to prove. They are coming off an 11-2 season and a Rose Bowl win over Pac-12 champions Utah. Five-star recruit Drew Allar is set to take the reins at quarterback for the team. Many analysts see this year to be the one Penn State upsets one of Ohio State or Michigan. That way, they can really stake their claim in the Big Ten and the College Football Playoff race after falling short the past few seasons. Welcoming another Power Five opponent in the West Virginia Mountaineers poses an interesting challenge. Regardless, it should still be a statement victory for Penn State.

North Carolina @ South Carolina, 7:30 PM, ABC

Another contest to keep your eye out for in the evening time slot is a battle of the Carolinas. #21 ranked North Carolina battles South Carolina in a neutral site game at Bank of America Stadium, which is home to the Carolina Panthers. North Carolina is coming off a 9-5 season, including an ACC championship loss to Clemson. South Carolina had an 8-5 season, which included victories over Tennessee and Clemson.

However, they would lose to Notre Dame in the Gator Bowl. UNC returns star quarterback Drake Maye for his final season before being drafted early in next year’s NFL draft. Meanwhile, SC returns Spencer Rattler and looks to build on an upstart year where they had a couple of upset victories. A rematch of the Duke’s Mayo Bowl from a few years ago, this game should be an exciting non-conference game to watch in primetime.

Sunday, September 3rd

Northwestern @ Rutgers, 12:00 PM, CBS

This game is one that both Rutgers and Northwestern fans have been looking forward to for a long time. A Sunday standalone game on national television, these two Big Ten teams will have the eyes of the nation on them. They’re both trying to rebound from poor showings last season. The Rutgers Scarlet Knights have made significant improvements on both sides of the ball. Gavin Wimsatt looks to make a season-opening statement in his first season as starting quarterback. After winning their first three games in the non-conference slate, Rutgers struggled the rest of the way last season. They only won one game in the Big Ten against Indiana to finish with a 4-8 record.

Back to the Birthplace Game: Sunday, Sept. 3 vs. Northwestern - Rutgers University Athletics

Meanwhile, Northwestern has dealt with a hazing scandal, which led to them replacing longtime head coach Pat Fitzgerald with former defensive coordinator David Braun. They too have improved at the quarterback position with transfer Ben Bryant from Cincinnati. However, they are coming off an abysmal 1-11 season, where their only win was against Nebraska in last year’s season-opening game in Ireland. Both teams would like to start the season with a conference win, and both teams need it for any hopes to get to a bowl game. The hype all offseason leads to this Sunday showdown in Piscataway, so make sure you tune in to this one!

LSU @ Florida State, 7:30 PM, ABC

Arguably the game of the week, this Sunday night showdown features two top-ten teams. #5 LSU faces #8 Florida State. These two teams met in last season’s opener, with Florida State edging out LSU. The Seminoles blocked the Tigers’ extra-point attempt on a last-second LSU touchdown to win the game 24-23. The two teams went on to pretty successful seasons. Louisiana State won the SEC West and finished 10-4 on the season, ending it with a 63-7 bowl win over Purdue. The Tigers return lots of talent, including quarterback Jayden Daniels and playmakers on both sides of the ball. Meanwhile, Florida State finished with a 10-3 record and returns a very talented roster themselves. This includes quarterback Jordan Travis and a top defense, as well as transfers such as wide receiver Keon Coleman from Michigan State on offense.

LSU Football: Instant analysis from loss to Florida State

There is a lot of hype surrounding the Seminoles this season, as they won the Cheez-It Bowl over Oklahoma last season. They are one of the favorites to win the ACC alongside Clemson. LSU had a monumental upset over Alabama last season and looks to return to the SEC Championship Game. This game has College Football Playoff implications, as each team is one of the best in their conference. However, even one loss could hurt their chances, making a win even more important. You don’t want to miss this game, and the lights will be shining bright in Orlando for this monumental clash.

What Will Happen with Jonathan Taylor?

0
Photo Cred: CBS Sports

Background

Recently, the Indianapolis Colts gave star running back Jonathan Taylor permission to seek a trade. The news came after a bounty of troubles caused within the Colts’ organization due to Taylor’s contract demands. These troubles included public statements from Colts owner Jim Irsay. In April, everything seemed to be going well between Taylor and the team.

Indianapolis Colts hope to calm waters surrounding Jonathan Taylor

Before the draft, Taylor gave an interview amid the controversy about paying running backs. In this interview, Taylor stated that, though he was disappointed, he still had one year left on his contract with the Colts and planned to play it out. The interview would be the last time JT personally spoke to the media. Afterward, Taylor hired a new agent, RBs around the league had a concerned Zoom meeting, and now he wants out.

Potential Trades

As a Colts fan, I have no issues with trading Taylor. The caveat is that the Colts receive a trade package in return akin to what the 49ers gave up for Christian McCaffrey last season. Trade compensation will depend heavily on whether Taylor will demand a contract extension with his new team. Taylor also has health questions, though it’s unknown whether that’s related to contract disputes. The bare minimum to expect in any trade the Colts accept would be a 2nd round pick plus some other assets. The team is currently looking for a package of or equal to a 1st round pick, though that seems unlikely.

Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins are the obvious team to talk about in potential Jonathan Taylor trade destinations. Miami has been in play for every RB on the market this offseason. Before bringing back Jeff Wilson Jr. and Raheem Mostert, the team pursued a trade for Vikings RB Dalvin Cook. After the Vikings cut Cook, the Dolphins pursued him again, but they lost out to the Jets. They drafted RB De’Von Achane in the third round, though it’s unknown how involved he will be in the backfield this year. Now, the Dolphins can grab a bona fide top-five running back in the league, further pursuing their all-in attempt at a Super Bowl.

Chicago Bears

The Bears would be another exciting landing spot for Taylor, as they are currently boasting one of the least inspiring RB rooms in the league. The addition of Taylor could have the same effect the Colts hoped to have when drafting Anthony Richardson. Justin Fields and Jonathan Taylor would make for one the most dynamic backfields in the league, one that other teams would fear.

Bears: Jonathan Taylor trade Chicago must offer Colts

The Bears are doing everything to ensure they know whether Justin Fields is their guy, and adding Taylor would give him no further excuses if he doesn’t improve. From the Colts’ perspective, a Chicago 2nd round pick in 2024 is the most desirable asset from any of these teams. Throw in one of Khalil Herbert or Roschon Johnson, and we may have a deal.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs have probably imagined Jonathan Taylor on their team ever since they drafted Clyde Edwards-Helaire over him in the 2020 NFL draft. Now, they have an opportunity to acquire the star RB. A trade with the Chiefs would require more than a 2nd, as everyone expects that second to be at the backend of the round. Throw in RB Isaiah Pacheco and a couple of mid-round picks, and Kansas City could have a new star in their backfield.

Chiefs YEA or NAY: RB Jonathan Taylor in Round 1 -

Photo Cred: ArrowheadOne

The Chiefs are the least likely option here, as it’s unknown if they would be willing to hand Taylor the large contract he desires. KC didn’t want to give WR Tyreek Hill a monster new contract and traded him away for assets instead. It seems unlikely that they will now make the opposite move for a less valuable position.

Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles have been linked to JT ever since the news came out that the Colts were letting him seek a trade. The Eagles have built a makeshift RB room over the offseason after former 2nd-round pick RB Miles Sanders went to the Carolina Panthers. They traded for RB D’Andre Swift from the Detroit Lions and signed former Seahawks RB Rashaad Penny. This is in addition to 2021 fifth-rounder Kenneth Gainwell and 2018 signing Boston Scott.

🚨WOW! Jonathan Taylor TRADE In The MAKING? 👀 Eagles CLOSING In On TRADE For STAR Running Back?🔥🚀 - YouTube

Their group is good on paper but comes with two massive injury concerns. The potential of Taylor behind their offensive line would be huge, and they could include one of their four running backs in the trade. The Colts and Eagles have strong links, as Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni is the Colts’ former OC, and Colts’ head coach Shane Steichen is Sirianni’s former OC. Like the Chiefs, I’d expect a mid-round pick to be included with a second-rounder.

NFL 2023-24 Position Group Rankings: Defensive Line

0
Photo Cred: Pro Football Network
1. Philadelphia Eagles

The team’s roster boasts a blend of top-tier talent and remarkable depth, positioning them as the premier defensive line unit in football. During the 2022 season, Philadelphia clinched the NFL lead with an impressive 70 sacks as a collective (with Kansas City trailing at 55). This group excels in generating pressure from both the exterior and interior positions. Haason Reddick stands out as one of the NFL’s finest edge rushers, having notched 16 sacks last season, leading the team. In his 12th season, Fletcher Cox remains dominant in both pass and run situations from the interior.

The Eagles retain high-caliber rushers in Josh Sweat and Brandon Graham. Their versatility allows them to be deployed strategically across the line, causing considerable matchup challenges for opponents during passing plays. In terms of run defense, the sizable presence of Jordan Davis in the center contributes to effectively occupying space. He’s expected to perform even more capably in his second year. The emergence of talented rookies from Georgia, namely Jalen Carter and Nolan Smith, adds a reservoir of skill to the depth, making them ready for instant contributions when called upon.

5 Philadelphia Eagles that should take a major step forward in 2020

2. San Francisco 49ers

Once again, the San Francisco 49ers will field one of the most formidable defensive fronts in the league. A pivotal figure is Nick Bosa, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year. Bosa’s impressive tally of 18.5 sacks in the previous season, coupled with 48 quarterback hits, underscores his consistent disruption of opponents’ backfields. The responsibility of starting opposite Bosa is likely to fall on 2022 second-round pick Drake Jackson, who will step into a more significant role.

The presence of Bosa should draw considerable attention, thereby creating advantageous circumstances for Jackson. The interior defensive line has been fortified with the addition of former Eagles standout Javon Hargrave, who partners with Arik Armstead. Hargrave’s career-high 11 sacks last season highlight his prowess, which should thrive particularly against offensive lines overcommitting to countering Bosa.

3. Washington Commanders

The Commanders boast one of the NFL’s most talented defensive lines, a force that significantly impacted games two seasons ago when they were in full health. Chase Young, who missed the entirety of 2022 due to a torn ACL, is poised for a return and, alongside Montez Sweat, carries the potential to become an elite edge duo. The interior of the Commanders’ line holds even more promise. Jonathan Allen reached a career-high with 16 tackles for loss in 2022, and Da’Ron Payne’s breakout saw him accumulate 11.5 sacks from the inside. While depth might be a concern, having exceptional players across all four-line positions is a rarity and positions the Commanders favorably.

4. Dallas Cowboys

Addressing their defensive tackle concerns was a priority for Dallas this offseason. The selection of Mazi Smith in the first round of the draft aims to rectify these issues, although its efficacy remains to be seen. Nevertheless, the prowess of the edge duo might overshadow any shortcomings. DeMarcus Lawrence, entering his tenth season, continues to be a productive force in quarterback pressure. On the opposite edge is Micah Parsons, an unstoppable talent demanding weekly gameplan attention from opposing offenses. With two Defensive Player of the Year runner-up finishes in his first two seasons, Parsons’ performance highlights his destructive impact.

5. Cleveland Browns

2023 NFL Offseason report: Cleveland Browns | NFL News, Rankings and Statistics | PFF

Photo Cred: PFF

Opting for more pass rush potency at the expense of run defense, Cleveland replaced Jadeveon Clowney with Za’Darius Smith this offseason. Smith’s 10 sacks in the previous season (his third double-digit sack campaign) positions him as a key edge presence. Smith’s role opposite Myles Garrett places him in favorable single-coverage scenarios. Garrett, one of the league’s premier pass rushers, has recorded 16 sacks in each of the past two seasons. Notably, Cleveland’s offseason also witnessed the additions of defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson and defensive end Ogbonnia Okoronkwo. Okoronkwo’s consistently effective edge defense and Tomlinson’s contributions in the middle address a historical area of weakness for the Browns.

6. Miami Dolphins

Retaining their starting lineup from the previous season, the Dolphins enter a phase where their players are hitting their primes. Christian Wilkins’ emergence as a prominent defensive tackle accentuated his performance in the past season. Zach Seiler also bolsters the interior as a stout presence against the run. Bradley Chubb, although marred by durability issues, carries undeniable talent as a former top-10 pick. His tenure with the Dolphins is expected to be marked by impactful play. Jaelan Phillips, an edge rusher, appears poised to transition into the NFL elite during his third season. Accumulating 15.5 sacks in his initial two Miami years, Phillips stands out as one of the most promising talents in the league.

7. New York Giants

The Giants are among the few teams capable of breaking into the upper echelons of this list. Leonard Williams and Dexter Lawrence shine on the interior, effectively pressuring opposing pockets even when double-teamed. Kayvon Thibodeaux, a top-five 2022 draft pick, has the potential to elevate this group’s performance in the upcoming season. The latter half of his rookie season revealed his speed-power combination’s efficacy in pressuring tackles off the edge.

8. Pittsburgh Steelers

Alex Highsmith’s breakout 2022 campaign complements T.J. Watt’s formidable presence on the edge, creating a potent tandem. Despite his injury struggles in the previous season, Watt retains his status as one of the NFL’s premier edge rushers. Watt’s 2021 season, where he secured 22.5 sacks and the Defensive Player of the Year honor, exemplifies his impact. Cameron Heyward’s continued stellar performance on the interior, even at 34 years of age, solidifies the Steelers’ standing as a standout defensive line unit.

9. Tennessee Titans

A top-five unit is attainable for the Titans in 2023, contingent on edge production. The contribution of free agent acquisition Arden Key, building on a strong 2022, and the recovery of Harold Landry III from a season-long injury will be pivotal. In terms of interior defense, Jeffrey Simmons, Denico Autry, and Teair Tart combine to form a formidable trio. Simmons’ consistency over the past two seasons is underscored by his 16 sacks and consecutive second-team All-Pro selections.

10. Buffalo Bills

Buffalo’s defensive line depth rivals the best in the league, outside of Philadelphia. Von Miller’s potential impact, although influenced by his age and recovery from a torn ACL, remains substantial. The Bills possess four starting-caliber edge rushers beneath him—Greg Rousseau, A.J. Epenesa, Leonard Floyd, and Boogie Basham. Ed Oliver’s interior presence, combined with DaQuan Jones, solidifies the middle and addresses concerns from the 2022 season.

11. Cincinnati Bengals

Cincinnati has a very well-rounded defensive line, with stout defenders against the run and as pass rushers. Former Saint Trey Hendrickson has been stellar in his first two years with the Bengals, making two Pro Bowls and racking up 22 sacks. He is complemented on the other side by Sam Hubbard, a stout run defender who sets the edge well. Behind them, rookie first-round picks Myles Murphy and Joseph Ossai provide one of the best second unit edge rushes in football. Inside, D.J. Reader has become a good defensive tackle, and B.J. Hill eats up blocks in the run game.

12. New York Jets

The Jets have a good mix of young and old on the defensive line, especially on the edge. Veterans John Franklin-Myers and Carl Lawson will start outside New York but look for young guns Jermaine Johnson and Will McDonald to get plenty of work out there. On the interior, Quinnen Williams has grown into an elite defensive tackle over the past few seasons and reached new heights last year with 12 sacks and a first-team All-Pro selection.

13. Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs have improved mightily across their defensive line in the last few years, but it all starts with Chris Jones. Jones is one of the top pass rushers in football at any position, and it only makes it more impressive that he does it from the interior of the Chief’s front. Jones tied career highs in 2022 with 15.5 sacks and 29 QB hits and added 17 tackles for loss. Second year man George Karlaftis should improve after a strong rookie season, and free agent acquisition Charles Omenihu was particularly good in a limited role last season in San Francisco.

14. Los Angeles Chargers

Health is always the question mark for the Chargers, along with the interior of the defensive line. Sebastian Joseph-Day was supposed to sure up the inside for Los Angeles but had a poor first season in powder blue last year. On the edge, Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa form one of the top duos in the league when healthy, but staying on the field has been a problem for both in recent years. Last season, Mack played all 17 games, but Bosa appeared in just five.

15. Carolina Panthers

Panthers move to keep Derrick Brown through 2024 NFL season - al.com

Photo Cred: AL.com

Lost in the Panther’s up-and-down season was the breakout of defensive tackle Derrick Brown. Brown racked up 40 QB pressures in 2022 while consistently serving as an elite defender in the run, living up to his billing as a top-10 pick back in 2020. With Brown in the interior and star edge rusher Brian Burns on the outside, Carolina will be a nightmare for opposing offensive lines to block.

16. Indianapolis Colts

The Colts have two monsters on the interior, with Grover Stewart eating up space in the run game and DeForest Buckner wreaking havoc on opposing backfields week after week. Buckner remains one of the best passes rushing defensive tackles in football and will anchor this Colts defense again in 2023. On the edge, Indianapolis is much less proven, with former first-round pick Kwity Paye and journeyman Samson Ebukam on the outside. Paye has yet to make a significant impact, while Ebukam has never been a true edge player.

17. Las Vegas Raiders

The Raiders’ defensive line is very one-dimensional, but it still has the star power to be effective as a unit. The interior is unreliable, leaving the Raiders vulnerable against the run, but they can get after the quarterback. Maxx Crosby is one of the elite edge rushers in the league, finishing 2022 with 12.5 sacks and 22 tackles for loss to lead the NFL. On the other side, Chandler Jones had a down year in 2022 with just 4.5 sacks but had reached double digits in his previous six healthy seasons, so he should bounce back. The Raiders also drafted Texas Tech star Tyree Wilson seventh overall to add depth on the edge.

18. Houston Texans

The Texans don’t have elite talent on the defensive line, but No. 3 overall pick Will Anderson Jr. should have an impact. Anderson is solid against both the pass and the run and jumped off the screen throughout his time at Alabama with his elite get-off and production. On the other side, veteran Jerry Hughes still has some gas left in the tank and is coming off a nine sack season. On the interior, Maliek Collins and Sheldon Rankins should get most of the work, but there isn’t a lot of reliable depth behind them.

19. Baltimore Ravens

The Ravens have a couple of breakout candidates on the edge, and if one or both pans out, this defensive line can be highly effective. Odafe Oweh has shown flashes in his first few seasons but is looking for more consistent production in year three. Former Michigan star David Ojabo played in just two games last season because of an achilles injury but can be an effective pass rusher in his first season. The Raven’s run defense should be serviceable with big-nose tackle Michael Pierce eating up double teams and new addition Jadeveon Clowney in the mix.

20. New Orleans Saints

Predicting the New Orleans Saints starting defense after 2023 draft

Cameron Jordan continues to be one of the best defensive linemen in the NFL, but he is entering his age 34 season. Carl Granderson had a wonderful year in 2022 and should continue to improve as he enters his fifth season. However, this team lost David Onyemata and Marcus Davenport, two quality pieces, and failed to replace them. That leaves the Saints without adequate talent or depth to be any higher on this list.

21. Green Bay Packers

The Packers have talent up front on defense, but for now, it’s a case of “I’ll believe it when I see it” for this group (and the whole defense). Green Bay has consistently underperformed on this side of the ball over the last few years, and it starts with a lack of resistance in the run game and a haphazard pass rush. Veteran Kenny Clark remains a stalwart, and Preston Smith is still a talented edge. But his production has declined over the past few seasons. Rashan Gary is a supreme talent and looked like a future star in 2021, but he’s coming off a torn ACL.

22. New England Patriots

Matthew Judon is as steady as they come rushing the passer in New England, recording 28 sacks in his two seasons as a Patriot. Bill Belichick has a young group outside of Judon that was improving in 2022. If they can continue that upward trend. This could be a standout unit. Christian Barmore was a star in college who is just finding his footing in the NFL, while versatile edge rusher Josh Uche quietly had a good season for the Pats.

23. Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings are in a bit better shape after Danielle Hunter signed a $20 million extension for this season, but there’s still much to be desired upfront. The Vikings added Marcus Davenport from New Orleans, who is a solid piece, but the interior of this unit is looking a little shakier. Khyiris Tonga was solid at nose tackle last season, but Harrison Phillips and especially Dean Lowry can be vulnerable spots inside.

24. Atlanta Falcons

The Falcons are one of the rare teams that will be good on the interior of the defensive line but will struggle on the edge. Atlanta added Calais Campbell and David Onyemata to go next to Grady Jarrett in the middle of that defense, and while the three of them are all aging, they are all still very productive. However, Bud Dupree and Lorenzo Carter will be on the edge for the Falcons, two players who failed to stick on their previous teams.

25. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Tampa Bay Buccaneers sign DT Vita Vea to four-year, $73 million contract extension | NFL News, Rankings and Statistics | PFF

Photo Cred: PFF

The Bucs still have talent on the defensive line from their Super Bowl-winning team in 2020-21, but they will need a more productive season in 2023. Shaquil Barrett played just eight games last year but still has a great burst off the edge. Vita Vea remains one of the top run stuffers in the middle. Can the Bucs get more production from multi-year starter Joe Tryon-Shoyinka? They might need it to finish the season higher up on this list.

26. Los Angeles Rams

Aaron Donald is the only thing keeping the Rams from the bottom of this list. The future Hall-of-Famer is still one of the best players in the world but is entering his age 32 season and struggled with injury in 2022. Donald was still a force when healthy, posting five sacks and ten tackles for loss in 11 games despite facing constant double and triple teams. The sad news for Donald is that he’ll see plenty of those because the Rams have run out of talent around him. Los Angeles drafted a lot of bodies up front in the late rounds of the 2023 Draft but has nobody with any proven NFL history outside of Donald.

27. Detroit Lions

Aidan Hutchinson, the No. 2 overall pick in 2022, came on strong as his rookie season went on. He’ll be a foundational piece on the Detroit defensive line. Where else can the Lions find production in 2023? Alim McNeill has been a good pass rusher from the interior, but it remains as to whether he can be a consistent force when he gets more attention. The rest of Detroit’s line is very unproven, so they land toward the bottom of the rankings despite the promise that Hutchinson has shown.

28. Jacksonville Jaguars

If the Jags want to fulfill their lofty expectations in 2023, the line must step up. It starts with former top 10 pick Josh Allen, who is coming off a strong 2022 but needs to take the next step for Jacksonville to be on the edge. DaVon Hamilton and Folorunso Fatukasi form a strong duo in the middle. The success of this group will come down to the development of Travon Walker. Walker was good against the run as a rookie, but the 2022 No.1 overall pick needs to be a force rushing the quarterback in year two.

29. Denver Broncos

If Randy Gregory can stay on the field, he gives the Broncos an explosive player on the end of their defensive line. The problem is that Gregory has struggled to be available for many reasons during his career, the most recent being a knee injury that limited him to just six games in 2022. The Broncos also found something late in the year in edge rusher Baron Browning, who’s recovering from offseason knee surgery and added Frank Clark from the Chiefs. There’s some talent on the edge in Denver, but they will struggle up front on the interior.

30. Seattle Seahawks

Boye Mafe, Derick Hall showing Seahawks' pass rush upside: 'We feed off each other' - The Athletic

The Seahawks’ defensive line has been a talking point for years, and they are still looking for answers. They found a versatile piece last season when Uchenna Nwosu came over from the Chargers, immediately becoming the best man in Seattle’s front four. However, the Seahawks have missed on a ton of draft picks in these spots in recent years. This season will be on the shoulders of Boye Mafe and rookie Derick Hall to provide some pop off the edge.

31. Chicago Bears

The Bears had a chance to add talent to the defensive line in the 2023 Draft but instead opted to get Justin Fields some help up front. It’s an understandable choice, but the defensive line will suffer this season. They were one of the worst pass rushing teams in football a season ago and attempted to remedy that by adding DeMarcus Walker and Yannick Ngakoue in free agency. Those two will help the pass rush, but it will still be an uphill battle against the run.

32. Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals lack NFL bodies on the defensive line. They lost their three best players up front from last season in J.J. Watt, Zach Allen, and Markus Golden, and are just looking to find future building blocks under new head coach Jonathan Gannon. Zaven Collins could become one of those after reports that he could move to the edge more in 2023, but this group will be vulnerable.

His adaptability could make TCU a team that’s hard to predict and defend against.

NFL 2023-24 Position Group Rankings: Offensive Line

0
Photo Cred: Pro Football Network

We’re just over one month away from the 2023-24 NFL season, and the excitement is building as the preseason is almost underway. Over the next few weeks, I’ll dive into each position group, from the quarterbacks to the kickers, and rank them before the season kicks off in Kansas City on Sept. 7. We turn to the big guys and rank the top offensive line units heading into the season.

1. Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles enter this season with the best offensive line in football, just like they ended 2022. Offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland is becoming a household name as the best in the business. The Eagles have the talent to back it up. Lane Johnson has long been one of the top tackles in the game. Jordan Mailata has progressed into a good tackle on the other side. On the interior, veteran Jason Kelce is still one of the best centers in the game, and left guard Landon Dickerson is elite. Right guard Isaac Seumalo is gone, but in his place is 2022 second-round pick Cam Jurgens. I’ll give Stoutland the benefit of the doubt and assume Jurgens will be fine as a part of this league-leading unit.

2. Detroit Lions

The Lions broke out as one of the top offenses in the NFL last season, and one of the reasons was their elite front five. Taylor Decker and Penei Sewell allowed just six sacks combined from the tackle spots, and both played all 17 games. Frank Ragnow was also very consistent for Detroit at center in 2023. They cycled through numerous guys as they dealt with injuries at guard, but Jonah Jackson and Halapoulivaati Vaitai are back healthy to start 2023 at those spots.

3. Cleveland Browns

The Browns have everything you could want in an offensive line. Center Ethan Pocic, guards Wyatt Teller and Joel Bitonio form the best interior trio in the league. They excel at paving holes for Nick Chubb in the run game. Their two shakiest links last season were their two most talented players: left tackle Jedrick Wills and right tackle Jack Conklin. If those two superstar talents can stay on the field and cut down on the penalties a bit, this has the potential to be the best unit in football.

4. Dallas Cowboys

If this unit stays healthy for the entire season, it could end up as the best front line in football. Tyron Smith is always beat up but will be back to start the season at left tackle. Tyler Smith will slide inside to left guard after blowing away expectations as a rookie at both tackle and guard. On the right side, Terence Steele is back at tackle, and All-Pro right guard Zack Martin is back at camp after signing a new contract extension. On paper, this is one of the best units in the league and is a force to be reckoned with when they’re all healthy.

5. Kansas City Chiefs

Kansas City has revamped its offensive line in recent years; it has become an even scarier offense. Creed Humphrey has been one of the best centers in football since he stepped onto an NFL field, and guard tandem Joe Thuney and Trey Smith allow Kansas City to excel in both the run and pass game. The Chiefs are experiencing some turnover at tackle in 2023, with Donovan Smith and Jawaan Taylor coming in, but both are solid enough to make this an elite unit once again.

6. Green Bay Packers

The Packers return all five starters from a strong unit a season ago, and star left tackle David Bakhtiari should only be getting healthier after his catastrophic knee injury in 2021. Zach Tom played well in limited snaps at right tackle last season, and the interior of this line is very experienced. Left guard Elgton Jenkins, right guard Jon Runyan, and center Josh Myers are a talented and experienced trio. Last season, Packers running back Aaron Jones averaged three yards before contact, one of the best marks in the league.

7. Atlanta Falcons

Arthur Smith loves to run the football. He’s got an excellent group of bruisers on the front line to help him do that. All-Pro right guard Chris Lindstrom is paired with one of the top tackle duos in the league to form one of the best front fives in football. Kaleb McGary is back at right tackle, and Jake Matthews returns on the left side. There are questions at quarterback for Atlanta, but Bijan Robinson running behind this offensive line will be a scary sight for defenses.

8. Baltimore Ravens

The Ravens have a strong group on paper, with a great interior duo of Kevin Zeitler and Tyler Linderbaum and the consistent Morgan Moses at right tackle. But the ceiling of this group is determined by left tackle Ronnie Stanley. He’s one of the best tackles in the league when healthy, but he has played just 18 games over the past three seasons due to injury. New offensive coordinator Todd Monken will throw the ball more than Greg Roman did. The Ravens will need a consistent year from Stanley on Lamar Jackson’s blindside.

9. Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings allowed a ton of pressure on Kirk Cousins last season. They return all five starters and should see improvement in 2023. They are strong at tackle with the tandem of Christian Darrisaw, Brian O’Neill, and Garrett Bradbury becoming an above-average starter at center. As this group meshes and builds more chemistry, their pass protection should catch up to their already-strong pedigree in the run game.

10. Carolina Panthers

The Panthers have continuity up front in 2023, returning all five starters from last season’s team. Ikem Ekwonu played well in the back half of his rookie season last year, and if he can match his pass protection to his ferocious power in the run game, he can be a franchise tackle. Center Bradley Bozeman was banged up and should have a better season if he can stay on the field. Overall, Carolina had a solid group in pass protection last season, which should only be helped by the pocket presence and mobility of Bryce Young.

11. Los Angeles Chargers

All the Chargers need on the offensive line (and everywhere else on their roster) is to get healthy. Rashawn Slater was an All-Pro left tackle as a rookie in 2021. Then he missed most of last season with a bicep injury, and he will be back in 2023. Corey Linsley is a standout at center, and Jamaree Salyer will move inside to left guard after filling in for Slater at tackle a season ago. On the right side, tackle Trey Pipkins showed improvement a season ago, while 2022 first-round pick Zion Johnson should improve in year two.

12. Cincinnati Bengals

People scrutinized Cincinnati’s offensive after their Super Bowl loss, but they have invested a lot of resources into it and improved in 2022. They should continue to improve this season. New addition Orlando Brown Jr. will slide into left tackle and allow Jonah Williams to move over to the right side. Williams struggled last season but should be better at right tackle. Add in the veteran interior duo of Alex Kappa and Ted Karras, and Bengal’s front line should be a strength in 2023.

13. Denver Broncos

The Broncos tried to rectify last season’s problems up front by adding left guard Ben Powers and right tackle Mike McGlinchey. That alone won’t solve all of Denver’s problems. Center Lloyd Cushenberry III will have to take a step forward, and left tackle Garrett Bolles needs to find his 2020 level in his return from injury. At a minimum, the Broncos should have a good run-blocking offensive line.

14. New York Jets

The Jets could end up making this ranking look foolish, for better or worse. Alijah Vera-Tucker is a good right guard. The combination of him left guard Laken Tomlinson, and rookie center Joe Tippmann should give the Jets a solid interior offensive line. The question mark is the health of the tackles. Duane Brown will be 38 when the season starts. Along with Mekhi Becton who has played just one game in the past two seasons. If they both can stay healthy and one can adjust to playing right tackle, the Jets could have a stellar front five.

15. San Francisco 49ers

We’ve grown accustomed to the 49ers having elite offensive lines, but it could be the group that holds this offense back in 2023. Trent Williams is still the cream of the crop at left tackle. But it gets bleak quickly after that in the Bay Area. Center Jake Brendel was average at best last season, and the other three starters are inexperienced heading into 2023. Longtime right tackle Mike McGlinchey is gone, and new right tackle Colton McKivitz will need to step up.

49ers 2023 Roster Breakdown: Offensive Line

16. Indianapolis Colts

There’s no way around it: Colt’s offensive line was a massive disappointment in 2022. Quinten Nelson was banged up and had the worst season of his career. Center Ryan Kelly has started to decline over the past two seasons. However, I’m giving this Colts group the benefit of the doubt. Nelson should be back closer to his usual self. Left tackle Bernhard Raimann should be better in year two after being forced into the lineup prematurely as a rookie. Additionally, new head coach Shane Steichen will use more play-action. The mobility of rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson will make this group’s job much easier than it was last season. Expect a bounce-back season from the Colts up front.

17. Seattle Seahawks

After years of turmoil on the offensive line, the Seahawks scored in the 2022 draft. They picked two tackles who look like long-term starters. Charles Cross and Abraham Lucas were both stellar as rookies. The duo had their difficulties (16 sacks allowed, 14 penalties combined), but both should improve in year two to form one of the best tackle duos in football. Damien Lewis is a strong veteran at left guard. Seattle is weak at the other two spots, but they should have a good enough unit to protect Geno Smith in 2023.

18. Houston Texans

The Texans’ offensive line has quietly developed into one of the best units on their roster in recent years. This is thanks in no small part to the stellar play of left tackle Laremy Tunsil. Tunsil is one of the best offensive linemen in the game. But he isn’t the only talented blocker in Houston. Right tackle Tytus Howard had a rough 2022. But has flashed a lot of potential and should improve this season in his fifth year in the NFL. Shaq Mason is an experienced veteran guard, and 2022 first-round pick Kenyon Green should be much better in year two at left guard. The situation is everything for rookie quarterbacks, and the Texans have a good enough front to keep C.J. Stroud upright.

19. Buffalo Bills

Buffalo is solid but unspectacular. They are helped a lot by the mobility of Josh Allen at quarterback. But the Bills will need to improve up front in 2023 if they want to have more consistency on that side of the ball. Connor McGovern, Ryan Bates, and Mitch Morse form a trio on the interior. Dion Dawkins is coming and had a strong season at left tackle. The question mark comes on the right side, as Spencer Brown was the weak link for the Bills last season and will need to improve for this unit to vault up these rankings.

20. New Orleans Saints

Trevor Penning, a first-round pick in 2022, is the x-factor for this unit. Penning has potential at left tackle but played just 66 snaps last season. New Orleans is good at center (Erik McCoy) and right tackle (Ryan Ramczyk), but Penning is the difference in this group from becoming average and or particularly good.

Saints' Erik McCoy, Ryan Ramczyk among most-underrated NFL players

21. New York Giants

The interior of the Giants’ offensive line is underwhelming. It’s holding them back in this ranking, but the tackles should be strong in the big apple. Andrew Thomas is one of the elite left tackles in football; should only continue to improve. On the right side, 2022 first-rounder Evan Neal struggled a bit as a rookie but has superstar talent and got better as the season went along. If Neal can take a leap in year two, this Giants group should be in decent shape for this season and beyond.

22. Miami Dolphins

In 2022, Terron Armstead was the difference between the Dolphins being a solid unit and a bad one. When Armstead missed time, the Dolphins crumbled up front. On the other side, right tackle Austin Jackson also has shown promise but played just 84 snaps a season ago. The interior of the Dolphins line is solid with center Connor Williams and right guard Robert Hunt, but it’s all going to come down to the health of the tackles for Miami in 2023.

23. Pittsburgh Steelers

Reinforcements are coming on the left side of the line for the Steelers in 2023. First-round pick Broderick Jones will step in immediately at left tackle. Pittsburgh also picked Isaac Seumalo from Philadelphia to play left guard. This should be a solid unit in pass protection, but they were terrible in the run game last year and made Najee Harris run into a ton of traffic at the line of scrimmage.

24. New England Patriots

The Patriots return four out of five starters up front and have a lot of pedigree on the offensive line, but they’re an older group, and the production wasn’t there in 2022. The Pats struggled to block in the run game, a problem for a team that wants to grind defenses down. If Trent Brown can find his Pro Bowl form again at left tackle, he can be a centerpiece of this unit, but he hasn’t found that level from 2019 since returning to New England.

25. Chicago Bears

The Bears bolstered one of 2022’s worst units by completely remaking the right side of the line. They brought in former Titan Nate Davis at Guard, and drafted Darnell Wright to play right tackle. On the left side, second-year man Braxton Jones has upside at right tackle. Teven Jenkins should improve as he gains more experience after transitioning to guard last season. The youth of this group bring their ranking down a bit, but it’s a unit that has the potential to overperform.

26. Arizona Cardinals

The tackle duo of D.J. Humphries and Paris Johnson Jr. is enough to keep them from the bottom of this list. I can’t move them any higher than 26 when the interior of their line looks the way it does. Guards Elijah Wilkinson and Will Hernandez were both penalty machines a season ago. Center Hjalte Froholdt has never started a game. Johnson Jr. was the best tackle prospect in the 2023 draft, while Humphries remains a good tackle, but the interior makes this a below-average group overall.

27. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Bucs’ interior offensive line should be better in 2023. Center Ryan Jensen returning from injury, but there are still questions abound for this unit. Jensen may not be ready for week one but will stabilize when he returns. Star tackle Tristan Wirfs is moving over to left tackle after the departure of Donovan Smith, so it remains to be seen if he can keep the same level from the other side. In his place at right tackle is 2022 second-round pick Luke Goedeke, who struggled mightily last season.

28. Jacksonville Jaguars

The offensive line will be a make-or-break unit in Jacksonville in 2023. They’re loaded everywhere else on that side of the ball. They will have to hold up upfront and keep Trevor Lawrence clean if they want to reach their goals. Right tackle Jawaan Taylor is gone from last season. Starting left tackle Cam Robinson is suspended for the first four games. First-round picks Anton Harrison and Walker Little will be filling the gaps at tackle. So who will stay in the starting lineup at right tackle when he returns? On the inside, Brandon Scherff is still one of the best guards in the game, but the rest of the interior is below average-at best.

29. Las Vegas Raiders

Massive left tackle Kolton Miller has been consistently solid protecting the blind side in Vegas. But the quality up front for the silver and black drops off significantly after that. Guards Alex Bars and Dylan Parham were both shaky at best last year. Parham was just a rookie last year. He could improve, but right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor could also be due for regression after having the best season of his career last year.

30. Washington Commanders

Washington could scrap together a decent offensive line, but they don’t have any high-end talent up front. Left tackle Charles Leno Jr. is on the wrong side of 30. The right tackle Andrew Wylie spent most of his five years in Kansas City inside at guard. On the inside, Washington will need one of Chris Paul, Sam Cosmi, or Nick Gates to take a leap to bolster this group, or they risk putting a shaky offensive line in front of their young quarterback.

31. Los Angeles Rams

The Rams offensive line injuries piled up in 2022, so injury regression could help them outperform this ranking. However, there is no doubt that this group has regressed significantly over the past few years. Tackles Rob Havenstein and Joe Noteboom are coming off bad years last season. Both will need to find their old form if they want to keep Matt Stafford upright in 2023. On the interior, the Rams are very inexperienced at guard. On top of that, center Brian Allen has struggled to stay on the field for most of his career.

32. Tennessee Titans

First-round pick Peter Skoronski out of Northwestern should bolster the group. He’ll probably slide over to guard in the NFL. The problem for Tennessee is that Skoronski might immediately be the best man on the front line. Ben Jones and Nate Davis are also gone from a unit that was already bad last season. The Titans will be playing with new pieces without depth or talent up front.

Rutgers Football Game-by-Game Predictions

With the college football season just a few short weeks away, fans nationwide are getting geared up and excited for the 2023 season! New Jersey is no exception, as Rutgers fans are looking forward to what should be a promising campaign from the Scarlet Knights. With an improved roster on both sides of the football, Rutgers (RU) has a good chance to win at least six games and get back to a bowl game this season. They also have a manageable schedule especially early on in the season. Let’s see how each game shakes out, with score predictions and what to expect in every game.

Game 1: Rutgers vs. Northwestern (Sunday, September 3rd at 12:00 pm)

Rutgers' series history with Northwestern - On the Banks

In the season-opening Sunday matchup, Rutgers hosts the Northwestern Wildcats (NU). NU is a Big Ten West opponent that will be playing with a new head coach in David Braun. This game will be in front of a national audience on CBS. Braun replaces longtime Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald after a widespread hazing scandal caused Fitzgerald to be fired. Northwestern also struggled on the field, going just 1-11 last season. Their only win came in Week 1 last season in Ireland against Nebraska. On the other hand, the Scarlet Knights won all three non-conference games as well as a conference game against Indiana. Finishing with a 4-8 record is not excellent by any means but it is still significantly better than what Northwestern did. Rutgers has to take care of business against the inferior Wildcats that are battling a scandal and coming off the worst record in the Big Ten. Gavin Wimsatt builds rapport with his new receivers in JaQuae Jackson and Naseim Brantley. Sam Brown V has a 100-yard rushing performance in his return. The Rutgers defense holds up at home, holding the Wildcats to just 10 points. In the end, the Scarlet Knights break 20 points themselves and set the tone for the season, winning by a score of 24-10.

Score prediction: Rutgers wins 24-10

Record prediction: 1-0, 1-0 Big Ten

Game 2: Rutgers vs. Temple (Saturday, September 9th at 7:30 pm)

Rutgers defense dominates Temple in 61-14 victory - On the Banks

Coming off an inspiring victory over Northwestern, Rutgers stays home to take on a familiar regional opponent in the Temple Owls. Rutgers won both of the last two matchups against Temple in dramatically different fashions. They defeated Temple 61-14 in the 2021 season opener. However, they barely survived an upset scare in Philadelphia last season, edging the Owls by a score of 16-14. This season, expect a happy medium. The Scarlet Knights win comfortably against a Group of Five opponent in Temple. Wimsatt goes off for 300 yards and three passing touchdowns to pair with a rushing touchdown. Al-Shadee Salaam scores a touchdown on the ground, and the defense prevents Temple from getting much going offensively under the lights at SHI Stadium. The Scarlet Knights prove to be too much for the Owls, as Rutgers cruises to a 41-17 victory and a 2-0 record.

Score prediction: Rutgers wins 41-17

Record prediction: 2-0, 1-0 Big Ten

Game 3: Rutgers vs. Virginia Tech (Saturday, September 16th at 3:30 pm)

Rutgers concludes their opening-season homestand with a Power Five matchup against the Virginia Tech Hokies. The Hokies had similar struggles to Rutgers last season, going 3-8 last season. Their final game against Virginia was canceled due to the tragic shootings of three Virginia football players. This is one of the biggest games of the season for both teams, as it is a pretty even matchup. Both teams finished with similar records and both need to win every winnable game to get to a bowl game this season. The home crowd should give the Scarlet Knights a boost and Wimsatt continues to impress. Although this game comes down to the final possession, the RU defense gets one final stop. An Aaron Lewis sack will seal the game for the Scarlet Knights.

Score prediction: Rutgers wins 27-24

Record prediction: 3-0, 1-0 Big Ten

Game 4: Rutgers @ Michigan (Saturday, September 23rd at 12:00 pm)

Five takeaways from Michigan football defeating Rutgers

After three straight wins to start the season, the schedule gets tougher for Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights make their first road trip of the season, visiting the two-time defending Big Ten champion Michigan Wolverines (UM). The Wolverines, led by returning quarterback J.J. McCarthy, have made the College Football Playoff in back-to-back seasons. They bring back many of their top players on both sides of the ball. Although Michigan has yet to win a College Football Playoff game, they are still much better than RU. That should show in this matchup in Ann Arbor. Rutgers has caught the Wolverines sleeping recently, with Michigan escaping with 48-42 and 20-13 wins in years prior. However, this was before the Wolverines had a more convincing 52-17 win in Piscataway last season. Even in that game, the Scarlet Knights had a 17-14 lead at halftime. Although RU keeps it closer than expected, Michigan gets going early in the game this year. UM soundly defeats the Scarlet Knights 38-17, handing Rutgers their first loss of the season.

Score prediction: Rutgers loses 38-17

Record prediction: 3-1, 1-1 Big Ten

Game 5: Rutgers vs. Wagner (Saturday, September 30th, time TBA)

After a tough outing at Michigan, Rutgers returns home to play an FCS opponent in the Wagner Seahawks. Last year, Wagner proved to be no match for Rutgers, as the Scarlet Knights got a 66-7 victory. Expect something similar this year. The Seahawks will continue to struggle in the FCS, and playing a Big Ten opponent on the road will certainly not help matters. Rutgers gets a chance to rest their starters in the second half and the Scarlet Knights get to see what they have in some of their younger recruits. In the end, RU gets the blowout victory to get back into the win column and improve to 4-1.

Score prediction: Rutgers wins 70-3

Record prediction: 4-1, 1-1 Big Ten

Game 6: Rutgers @ Wisconsin (Saturday, October 7th at 12:00 pm)

Rutgers dismantled by Wisconsin as calendar turns to November - On the Banks

Rutgers returns to the road to face another Big Ten West foe, the Wisconsin Badgers. Quietly ranked #19 in the country in the AP preseason poll, Wisconsin brings in new head coach Luke Fickell. He recently led Cincinnati to become the first Group of Five team to make the College Football Playoff. The Badgers present a tough matchup for most teams, as they play a typical Big Ten West style of football. They run the ball heavily and also like stopping the run on defense. Although Rutgers likes to play a similar style, Wisconsin will win this game on the lines of scrimmage. The Badgers will overpower the Scarlet Knights by running hard and also not allowing much on the ground for Rutgers. Wimsatt struggles through the air, and a garbage time touchdown to Maine transfer tight end Shaun Bowman is not enough to prevent a difficult loss for Rutgers.

Score prediction: Rutgers loses 42-10

Record prediction: 4-2, 1-2 Big Ten

Game 7: Rutgers vs. Michigan State (Saturday, October 14th at 12:00 pm)

Football Falls Short at Michigan State - Rutgers University Athletics

The Scarlet Knights host Big Ten East rival Michigan State Spartans for homecoming. This matchup is a must-win for RU as well. The Spartans won’t be an easy opponent by any means. However, Michigan State has been on the downturn lately and is projected to be a bit worse. Payton Thorne and Keon Coleman are at different schools now, while Kenneth Walker III is in the NFL. Last season, Rutgers fell to Michigan State 27-21 in East Lansing. However, Gavin Wimsatt and Kyle Monangai had monster games and managed to keep Rutgers in the game. This season in Piscataway, the Scarlet Knights are better on both sides of the ball and the Spartans are worse. Rutgers hangs on for a thrilling victory and improves to 5-2. Wimsatt leads the offense down the field in the final two minutes to set up new starting placekicker Jai Patel with a game-winning 39-yard field goal as time expires.

Score prediction: Rutgers wins 34-31

Record prediction: 5-2, 2-2 Big Ten

Game 8: Rutgers @ Indiana (Saturday, October 21st at 12:00 pm)

Rutgers visits another Big Ten East rival in the Indiana Hoosiers for a chance at bowl eligibility. The Scarlet Knights should not blow their shot against a similarly-talented Indiana team. Rutgers has won the last two games in the series, with a dominant 38-3 win in Bloomington two seasons ago and a gritty 24-17 win in Piscataway last year. This season’s contest is similar to last year but Rutgers grinds out a 31-24 win. Brown V finds a hole in the Indiana defense for a 71-yard touchdown run. This will ice the game and clinch a bowl game for the Scarlet Knights.

Score prediction: Rutgers wins 31-24

Record prediction: 6-2, 3-2 Big Ten

Game 9: Rutgers vs. Ohio State (Saturday, November 4th, time TBA)

Ohio State vs. Rutgers: 5 things we think we learned in victory

RU comes off their bye week having clinched a bowl berth in October. The Scarlet Knights fans pack SHI Stadium in early November to see their team battle one of the nation’s best, the Ohio State Buckeyes. Unfortunately for Rutgers fans, the bowl game celebration is ruined by new starting Ohio State quarterback Kyle McCord. He will find star wide receivers Marvin Harrison Jr. and Emeka Egbuka for four combined touchdowns. Miyan Williams pairs with TreVeyeon Henderson for four more touchdowns on the ground. The Scarlet Knights realize they have a lot more work to do to compete with the Big Ten elite and get blown out at home 59-21. With that being said, Wimsatt hits Jackson in stride for an 88-yard touchdown. Monangai scores twice on the ground as well, while Brown V rushes for another 100-yard performance.

Score prediction: Rutgers loses 59-21

Record prediction: 6-3, 3-3 Big Ten

Game 10: Rutgers @ Iowa (Saturday, November 11th, time TBA)

Rutgers football vs. Iowa: Live updates from Big Ten opener

Rutgers hits the road once again to take on a third Big Ten West opponent, the Iowa Hawkeyes. Similar to RU, Iowa has an elite defense and special teams unit as well as a lackluster offense. However, the Iowa offense should be better this season, as former Michigan starting quarterback Cade McNamara transferred here. He even brought tight end Erick All along with him. The vaunted Iowa defense wears down the Rutgers offense. McNamara finds All and former Ohio State receiver Kaleb Brown in the end zone late to give the Hawkeyes a 21-10 win over the Scarlet Knights.

Score prediction: Rutgers loses 21-10

Record prediction: 6-4, 3-4 Big Ten

Game 11: Rutgers @ Penn State (Saturday, November 18th, time TBA)

Rutgers' series history with Penn State - On the BanksPhoto Cred: On the Banks

Rutgers stays on the road to visit one of their biggest football rivals, the Penn State Nittany Lions. Penn State has been the dominant team in this rivalry. This includes a 28-0 win in Happy Valley two years ago and a 55-10 win in Piscataway last season. The Nittany Lions look to get even better with five-star quarterback Drew Allar set to start this season. Their running back duo of Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton looks great, in addition to a great defense and solid offensive line. RU will be overmatched once again despite their off-season improvements. Although Max Melton returns an interception for a touchdown, there isn’t much more scoring from the Scarlet Knights. Penn State runs away with it 50-13.

Score prediction: Rutgers loses 50-13

Record prediction: 6-5, 3-5 Big Ten

Game 12: Rutgers vs. Maryland (Saturday, November 26th, time TBA)

Rutgers' series history with Maryland - On the Banks

Rutgers returns home for their regular-season finale. They’ll take on the Maryland Terrapins (MD) for rivalry week on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. RU and Maryland entered the Big Ten in the same year in 2014 and have been competitive in football until very recently. The Terps have taken the last two games 40-16 in New Jersey and a 37-0 shutout last season. The Scarlet Knights should come a bit closer this season around, but Mike Locksley has taken Maryland to another level. MD is closer to competing with the Big Ten East’s top three teams than the bottom three. Wimsatt finds Naseim Brantley on a 55-yard deep route, while Sam Brown V and Kyle Monangai score on the ground. Taulia Tagovailoa throws three touchdowns on his own, with another from Roman Hemby. MD wins a close game to end the season 28-21 and sends the Scarlet Knights to 6-6 after a hot 6-2 start.

Score prediction: Rutgers loses 28-21

Record prediction: 6-6, 3-6 Big Ten

Bowl Game prediction- Pinstripe Bowl vs. NC State (December 28th at 2:15 pm)

Knight Flicks: A Look Back at Rutgers - NC State 2008 Bowl Game - The Comeback - YouTube

Despite the fall-off in November, Rutgers gets rewarded for their six-win season with a bowl game at Yankee Stadium in nearby New York City. They take on a past bowl opponent in NC State, who they beat 29-23 in the Papajohns.com bowl in 2008. NC State likely qualifies for bowl eligibility this season with six or seven wins, setting up a rematch in the Pinstripe Bowl fifteen years later. Wimsatt has a legacy performance, throwing for 300 yards and three touchdowns, while Brown V scores two more on the ground. The defense remains formidable and Rutgers gets to a winning record and a bowl victory for the first time since 2014.

Final Score: Rutgers 38-35

Record prediction: 7-6, 3-6 Big Ten

Conclusion

So there you have it. I have Rutgers clinching and winning a bowl game this year at 6-6, although it highly depends on Rutgers’ ability to win their toss-up games. RU comes in as clear favorites against Northwestern, Temple, and Wagner, so they should be able to handle business in those games. Games against Michigan, Penn State, Ohio State, and Wisconsin will almost definitely be hefty losses for Rutgers. Other Big Ten matchups against Maryland and Iowa loom as possible but unlikely upsets. The swing games for Rutgers are against Virginia Tech, Michigan State, and Indiana. RU cannot afford to misfire even once here. They need to win all three games against similarly talented opponents on top of the games that they are favored to win. If they do that, then the Scarlet Knights have a path to six wins and a bowl game. The fun all starts on September 3rd, when Rutgers opens the season at home against Northwestern. It will be a standalone Sunday afternoon game on CBS. Stay tuned and keep chopping!

Top Point Guards Heading into the NBA Season

0
Photo Cred: Pro Sports Outlook

With the NBA training camp approaching in a few weeks, we should dive into the top point guards heading into the season. We all know that the NBA has become a guard-dominant league, and with top guards, play can lead to a championship. Here are the top five-point guards heading into this NBA season.

1. Steph Curry

Steph Curry is still the best point guard in the league and has been for years. He is the best shooter in history and the number one reason the Warriors will still be in championship contention. Expect MVP-type numbers for Steph Curry this season, and he and the Warriors will look to bounce back after their second-round loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.

2. Luka Doncic

Luka Doncic is one of the best players in the league. At an early age, Luka uses his size, strength, ball handling, and shooting ability to score. He’s also gets his teammates involved. Luka has an MVP trophy in his future, and I expect him to play this season with tremendous urgency as the Mavericks look to have a better season than they did last year. Luka can fill up the stat sheet, which is the key to Maverick’s success this year. I fully expect Luka to have an MVP-type season.

3. Damian Lillard

Damian Lillard will be the second-best point guard this season. Most forget Lillard was shut down for the latter half of last season because the Blazers fell out of playoff contention. Lillard, like Curry, is a terrific three-point shooter and can pull up from anywhere. Who knows what team Lillard will be playing for next season but expects him to come out and put on a show. Lillard also has extreme athleticism and can finish at the rim with the best.

4. Jamal Murray

Jamal Murray, recently off winning an NBA championship last season with the Denver Nuggets, will be looking to continue his stellar play and repeat as NBA champions. Murray proved last season that he one of the best players in the league. Many didn’t know how he would play after being injured for so long. Murray is also very athletic and a capable defender. I expect Murray and the Denver Nuggets to be at the top of the Western Conference this season.

5. Ja Morant

Ja Morant has extreme athleticism and an extremely high upside. Morant and the Grizzlies have struggled with injuries/off the court issues. Morant is suspended for the first 25 games of the regular season. When he returns, I expect him and the Grizzlies to bounce back from their first-round exit to the Lakers. If everyone can stay healthy, Ja can lead this team deep into the playoffs.
