Why the Braves Can Win the World Series

The 2023 Atlanta Braves have one the best lineups in MLB history. Ronald Acuna Jr. leads the team, a player who recorded the first-ever 40 HR/70 SB season in baseball’s 147-year history and is all but a sure thing to bring home the NL MVP. Hitting behind him are Ozzie Albies and Austin Riley, both of whom amassed 30 home runs this season. Hitting cleanup is Matt Olson, who led the league in home runs. Behind him is Marcell Ozuna, who hit 40 dingers. The back half of the Braves lineup is no cakewalk for opposing pitchers, featuring Eddie Rosario, Sean Murphy, Orlando Arcia, and Michael Harris II. This lineup tied the single-season record for most home runs hit, and there is no evidence to suggest they won’t keep up this pace in the postseason.

The Braves pitching staff provides more concern for opponents. Ace starter Spencer Strider finished with a 20–5 record and 281 strikeouts, both marks that led the MLB. While Strider’s ERA of 3.86 tells a different story, the 24-year-old is still a high-quality ace that Atlanta will have no problem trusting in big moments. Behind Strider is where things begin to get shaky. Charlie Morton has been ruled out of the division series with a finger issue. Bryce Elder was an All-Star but has since seen his ERA rise to over 5.00 in the second half of the season. Max Fried has been elite when healthy, but the lefty battled injuries throughout the season and was forced to miss his last few starts.

The Braves’ bullpen is a bit of a mixed bag. Raisel Iglesias has proven to be one of the most reliable closers in baseball this year. Collin McHugh, A.J. Minter, Kirby Yates, Joe Jiménez, and Michael Tonkin were all dependable in the middle-to-late innings at different points throughout the season. However, all of them have also had moments where they are unplayable. While the Braves don’t need all those guys pitching well to be successful, they’ll need to find a few guys who can be consistent options.

The Braves will take on the Philadelphia Phillies in the division series, a matchup between two NL East powerhouses. The Phillies made the World Series last season and are returning most of their key pieces. Their power and elite pitching is something to be feared, but the Braves lineup should prevail. The other NLDS matchup is the Arizona Diamondbacks vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers. Both teams are talented, but Atlanta is better and should have a straightforward path to the World Series.

Rookie QB Check-In

We are almost a quarter of the way into the 2023 NFL season, and the performance of the three rookie starting quarterbacks across the league has been positive. In the first round, only three signal callers were selected, and all three have solidified their positions as the starting quarterbacks for their respective franchises. Naturally, they have encountered their fair share of difficulties, as is typical for first-year quarterbacks. However, overall, all three rookies have shown promise. Let’s look at their performances over the last month, starting with the No. 1 overall pick.

Bryce Young, Carolina Panthers:

Bryce Young, the Carolina Panthers’ quarterback, appears to be performing slightly below the level of the other two rookies. However, it’s important to note that the current offensive environment in Carolina has not been conducive to his success. Expectations were high for Young to play behind a strong offensive line, guided by a coach with a history of success in NFL offenses.

In his first three starts, the offensive line, which I had ranked No. 10 in my preseason offensive line rankings, has struggled immensely. He missed Carolina’s Week 3 game due to an ankle injury. Young often faces significant pressure when dropping back to pass, making his job exceedingly challenging. Furthermore, he occasionally holds onto the ball for too long, resulting in a passing game that frequently stalls and incurs unnecessary negative plays.

The receiving corps hasn’t provided much assistance either. While Adam Thielen has been a reliable veteran presence for the Panthers, the group lacks speed and big-play ability. Consequently, Young frequently encounters tight man coverage and is forced to make difficult throws to receivers who struggle to create separation. Nevertheless, the QB continues to display the attributes that made him a promising prospect in college. His pocket presence and mobility remain impressive, even with limited protection.

He makes good decisions and displays accuracy, as evidenced by his streak of 18 consecutive completions last weekend against Minnesota. As Young matures, his focus should be on reducing sacks and negative plays while maintaining his timing and accuracy. This will make him a potent passer in short and intermediate situations. Despite the challenging circumstances around him, the quarterback’s long-term potential remains promising.

C.J. Stroud, Houston Texans:

C.J. Stroud has been the standout performer among the three rookie quarterbacks thus far. He has emerged as one of the NFL’s better quarterbacks overall. This achievement is particularly noteworthy given his situation: he plays behind an improvised offensive line and throws to a talented but unproven receiving corps. As a result, the Houston Texans, currently sporting a 2-2 record, have been one of the league’s surprise teams. This is primarily due to Stroud’s exceptional performance.

The rookie’s composure and command of the game have been nothing short of impressive, almost resembling that of a veteran quarterback. Stroud has the freedom to alter plays and protections at the line of scrimmage, and he consistently does so to put the Houston offense in advantageous positions. All the attributes that made him one of college football’s top quarterbacks have seamlessly transitioned to the NFL.

His accuracy and anticipation have stood out the most, delivering passes at all levels. While he may not possess Josh Allen’s arm strength, Stroud still has the capability to make throws to all areas of the field. The QB has also been judicious with his decision-making, maintaining a clean slate with no interceptions in his early career. However, it’s important to note that the Houston offense hasn’t relied solely on short passes. Stroud has been consistently pushing the ball downfield, with 17 completions of 20+ yards, ranking among the league’s top performers in this category. What’s truly remarkable about his early success is the development of aspects of his game that weren’t as visible during his time at Ohio State.

In the NFL, he has been forced to improvise and create plays more frequently than in college, and he has excelled in this regard. The rookie consistently delivers accurate throws on the move. Concerns about his ability to perform under pressure, which was present during his college career, have been dispelled in the NFL. Overall, Stroud has comfortably established himself as one of the top 15 NFL quarterbacks thus far. While he may face challenges ahead, the Texans have every reason to be excited about his performance thus far.

Anthony Richardson, Indianapolis Colts:

Among the three first-round quarterbacks, Anthony Richardson was the most unpredictable prospect, having played the least in college and possessing a raw skill set. He lacked the polish of Stroud or Young. He was rough around the edges, but that hasn’t surfaced this season. However, despite his limitations, Richardson’s performance has been impressive.

Richardson has seen limited action, playing only about two and a half games due to a concussion. Nevertheless, a brief observation of the Colts’ offense reveals his tremendous potential. His physical attributes are undeniable; he may be the most athletically gifted quarterback ever to enter the draft. The quarterback’s athleticism has been evident in his running game contributions, his ability to escape the pocket, and his knack for extending plays. Furthermore, he possesses one of the strongest arms in the league, allowing him to make throws from any platform on the field.

However, Richardson’s accuracy remains inconsistent, reminiscent of his college days, and he occasionally makes throws that should be more precise. Additionally, he attempts high-risk passes due to his confidence in his arm strength. It’s worth emphasizing that the rookie has played fewer than three games, and his college experience as a starter was also relatively brief. He is still in the process of refining his skills and has ample time for development.

One of Richardson’s most impressive qualities is his ability to avoid common pitfalls that often plague quarterbacks with his level of talent and skill set. While many quarterbacks with strong arms tend to hold the ball too long in search of big plays, Richardson does not share this problem. He processes information quickly, progresses through his reads efficiently, and keeps the offense on schedule. Furthermore, his exceptional pocket movement, especially for someone with limited high-level experience in the position, makes him a formidable scrambler.

He displays comfort moving within and through pockets rather than consistently relying on external mobility. Richardson’s game may still require refinement, and his box score statistics may not fully reflect his potential. His performances on film in the first month of the season suggest that the Colts may have discovered another franchise quarterback.

The three rookie starting quarterbacks in the NFL’s 2023 season have shown promise and potential, each facing unique challenges and opportunities. While Bryce Young navigates a challenging situation in Carolina, C.J. Stroud has impressed with his poise and decision-making in Houston, and Anthony Richardson’s remarkable athleticism and potential shine through in Indianapolis. It will be intriguing to track their development as the season progresses.

NC State outside linebacker Payton Wilson is the Butkus Award National Linebacker of the Month. In the first half of the season, Wilson has tallied 56 tackles. He has shown exceptional ability to read the game and make crucial stops. Against Notre Dame, Wilson showcased speed that NFL scouts love. Chasing down a Fighting Irish ballcarrier, he reached 23.4 miles per hour. Head coach Dave Doeren described it as the fastest speed recorded in the Wolfpack’s program history.

It was a moment that exemplified Wilson’s exceptional athleticism and commitment to his team’s success. Standing at 6’4″ and weighing 238 pounds, he is not just a force on the field; he’s also a symbol of resilience. Throughout his collegiate career, the linebacker has battled injuries but hasn’t let these setbacks deter him. Instead, he has returned for his sixth year, determined to lead the Wolfpack to glory.

A graduate student from Hillsborough, N.C., Wilson has been a tackling machine and a well-rounded defensive presence. Leading the Atlantic Coast Conference in tackles is no small feat, but he has managed to do just that, amassing 4.5 tackles-for-loss and 2.5 sacks. Additionally, he boasts three pass breakups, an interception, four quarterback hurries, and a fumble recovery. Wilson’s versatility and ability to impact every facet of the game have made him an invaluable asset to the Wolfpack’s defense.

Recognizing the linebacker’s exceptional contributions, the prestigious Butkus Award has taken notice. Each month during the regular season, the Butkus Award selects a college linebacker of the month, and Wilson’s name has rightfully entered the conversation. As the season progresses, fans and pundits eagerly await the announcement of semi-finalists on October 30, followed by finalists on November 20.

The winner of this coveted award, named in honor of the legendary Dick Butkus, will be revealed on or before December 6. Dick Butkus, whose name graces this esteemed accolade, was a force in college football and a star for the Chicago Bears in the NFL. To be mentioned in the same breath as Butkus is a testament to Wilson’s remarkable talents and the indomitable spirit he brings to the field.

Amid a remarkable season, Wilson’s journey serves as a reminder that greatness is not only measured by statistics but also by the heart. NC State is having a solid season. As the Wolfpack continues their campaign, fans hope that his exceptional efforts will propel them to new heights and perhaps even to the ultimate recognition—the Butkus Award.

I have been granted a remarkable opportunity to cover a very special event. Thanks to Ms. Ghazal Khan, I will be writing articles about the 2023 Asia Cup of Wheelchair Cricket. The tournament is organized by the International Council of Wheelchair Cricket and sponsored by Interloop and the Pakistan Cricket Board. Officially, it is named the Interloop T-20 Asia Cup, which will be co-organized by Pakistan and Nepal. The games can be watched live on Action Sports HD 1, a Nepali sports channel.

The teams that will take part in this event are India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Nepal. In the previous iteration of the tournament, which was also held in Nepal, Pakistan emerged victorious in 2019 against India. This time, the games will be played at the TU International Cricket Ground in Kathmandu, Nepal, on the same grounds as before. It is amazing that so many specially-abled athletes can look past their impairments and represent their countries on a global platform! Kudos to these extraordinary athletes from all the participating teams. Regardless of the ultimate winner, those who have reached this stage are all champions in life!

Updated Schedule

Initially, the games were set to begin at 9:30 AM NPT (Nepal Time) and 2:00 PM NPT. However, the schedule had to be adjusted due to incessant rain and two recent earthquakes in Nepal… There were supposed to be two games played every day from October 4th to 8th (10 total), with a final on October 9th. However, in the new schedule, only one game will be played on October 4th, and two games will be played each day from the 5th to the 9th. This means that a game will be played before the final on the last day as well.

Tennessee Judge Rules to End Conservatorship Between Michael Oher and Tuohy Family

Photo Cred: Hollywood Unlocked (L- Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy, R- Michael Oher)

On September 29, 2023, a judge ruled to terminate the conservatorship between former NFL player Michael Oher and the Tuohy family. Oher signed the conservatorship in 2004 at the age of 18 under false pretenses. This arrangement granted Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy legal authority to engage in business ventures in his name. However, Shelby County Probate Court Judge Kathleen Gomes announced on Friday the discontinuation of the document allowing the Tuohy family to control Michael Oher’s finances.

The Truth Comes to Light

In February 2023, Michael Oher discovered that he had no familial relations to the Tuohys. Allegations have emerged that Sean and Leigh Anne falsely represented themselves as Oher’s adoptive parents in order to gain fame off his name. Oher also claims the Tuohy family misled him into believing that the conservatorship documents were his adoption papers. It took nearly two decades for him to uncover the truth, and only a portion of the papers has been exposed. Oher revealed that he remained unaware of the extent to which his name and story were monetized.

The Blind Side

For many, the names Michael Oher and the Tuohy family are familiar due to the 2009 film, “The Blind Side,” which captured the hearts of audiences. Sandra Bullock, who won an Oscar for Best Actress for her role, starred in the movie. The film is a biographical account of Michael Oher’s life- a young man who grew up in the Tennessee projects. He overcame challenges such as gang violence, old acquaintances, the foster care system, judgment, and poverty. One fateful night, he encountered Leigh Anne Tuohy while walking to the gym in the dark, cold, rainy weather. Tuohy questioned Oher about heading to the gym when it was closed, to which Oher replied, “Because it’s warm.”

She quickly asked Oher if he had a place to stay that night. After he responded affirmatively, she sternly said, “Don’t you dare lie to me.” The rest was history, or so we thought. Oher stayed that night with the Tuohy family and never left. Through the lens of the movie, viewers witnessed them becoming his family and, most importantly, they saw him experience a mother’s love. Personally, the movie served as a reminder that good-hearted people still exist.

Legal Battles Not Over

In August, Oher filed a petition with a Memphis probate court. In the petition, he requested the termination of the conservatorship, a comprehensive financial report detailing all earnings the Tuohy family garnered from his name, and reimbursement with interest. The petition also adds negative allegations questioning the character of the Tuohys.

“Where other parents of Michael’s classmates saw Michael simply as a nice kid in need, Conservators Sean Tuohy and Leigh Anne Tuohy saw something else: a gullible young man whose athletic talent could be exploited for their own benefit.”

While a judge ruled on Friday to end the conservatorship, the legal battles are far from over. Significant matters within the lawsuit persist, including concerns regarding payments and allegations of forged signatures by the family. The Tuohy family, along with their legal representatives, have consistently denied all claims. They emphasize that their actions were solely in the best interests of Oher and express shock at the allegations made against them. Sean Tuohy shared his thoughts on a Daily Memphian website.

“We didn’t make any money off the movie, only a share of proceeds from Michael Lewis’ book, which was the foundation for the film,” said Tuohy. “It’s upsetting to think we would make money off any of our children. But we’re going to love Michael at 37 just like we loved him at 16.”

As the world closely follows this unfolding story, we can only hope for a positive resolution, while also considering the possibility that the allegations against the Tuohy family may be unfounded.

Caleb Williams left an indelible mark on the gridiron during the past week. His remarkable performance deserves recognition, and he is SRA’s Pac-12 Player of the Week. Williams exhibited an equally electrifying performance. Facing off against the Colorado Buffaloes, he  displayed his versatility by throwing for 403 yards and tied a career-high with six touchdown passes.

USC held off Colorado 48-41 on Saturday after racing out to a big lead, solidifying their position as a force within the Pac-12. Caleb Williams has made a compelling case for their Heisman Trophy aspirations. His exceptional performances have garnered him the Pac-12 Player of the Week award and have thrust USC into the national spotlight as Heisman’s leading contender. Moreover, the star quarterback has positioned USC to make a run for the college football playoffs.

USC Holds Off Colorado’s Comeback Attempt

In their second consecutive contest against a top-10 opponent, Colorado (3-2, 0-2 Pac-12) fared much better than last week. However, a frantic second-half rally came up short, as they fell to No. 8 USC (5-0, 3-0 Pac-12) 48-41 on Saturday in Boulder. The Buffs got off to another slow start in this one, something that is becoming a theme through five games this season. The offense started stalling over the first few series, and the defense offered little resistance to Caleb Williams and the high-powered USC attack. On the first play of the second quarter, Williams found Dorian Singer for a touchdown to give the Trojans a quick 21-0 lead.

“Wonderful game, played our hearts out,” said Deion Sanders postgame. “I just addressed the team and told them that I love each and every one of them, coaches included, because they were resilient. They did not give up when they had multiple opportunities to give up. They fought ‘til the end.”

The Buffs offense woke up in the second frame, putting together a pair of touchdown drives to stay afloat going into halftime, although they were still trailing 34-14. In the second half, the defense followed suit, and the Buffs were in business. In that second half, CU started to really click, and Shedeur Sanders found a new target. True freshman Omarion Miller, who had not recorded a catch over the first four games, reeled in seven catches for 196 yards and a touchdown after the intermission. This broke Paul Richardson’s freshman record for yards in a game.

Miller was a star throughout the second half, winning in every way possible. He got open underneath with great routes, made plays down the field, and flashed his athleticism by getting huge gains after the catch. Sanders continued to look his way in big moments during the second half, including a big red zone touchdown on fourth-and-5.

“It was crazy,” Miller said postgame. “I dreamt of playing like that last night.”

The Buffs had to use their timeouts early in the second half, which cost them during the comeback. Their drive, trailing by 14 with just under six minutes to play, was discombobulated and took too much time with two scores needed. Colorado eventually punched it in, cutting the lead to seven, but it was too late. USC recovered the onside kick, ending the game.

Despite the loss, the Buffs had some bright spots. After a down week last week against Oregon, Shedeur Sanders was superb on Saturday, finishing 30-for-45 with 371 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception. The Buffaloes quarterback also used his legs more than he had throughout the first four weeks, running for 50 yards and a touchdown.

CU also established the run despite coming into Saturday ranked dead last in rushing offense. They ran for 193 yards, and Anthony Hankerson led the way with 74 yards and a score. Through the air, Jimmy Horn Jr. added two touchdowns.

Defensively, true freshman Cormani McClain, whom Deion Sanders had been critical of earlier in the week, got the most playing time of his young career and had a good day in coverage. Safety Cam’Ron Silmon-Craig created the Buffs’ only turnover of the afternoon, grabbing his third interception of the season.

For USC, Caleb Williams continued his campaign for his second straight Heisman Trophy, playing a near-flawless game and finishing 30-40 with 403 yards, six touchdowns, and one interception. Williams now has 24 total touchdowns with just the one pick through five games. Wide receiver Brendan Rice, a former CU wideout, had a big day in his return to Folsom Field, scoring two times. Leading the way in the receiver room for the Trojans was Tahj Washington, who reeled in eight balls for 117 yards and a score.

USC remains undefeated with the win and moves along in Pac-12 play next weekend when they take on Arizona. On the Buffs’ side, after two consecutive top-10 opponents, they get a more manageable opponent next weekend when they head to Tempe to take on Arizona State. Kick time is 4:30 p.m. MST.

Best Fantasy Waiver Wire Pickups of 2023

Note: Bolded statistics mean this player is the league-leader(s) in this category.

Raheem Mostert

Mostert has had a monster start to the 2023 season as Miami’s lead running back. With RB Jeff Wilson Jr. put on injured reserve after the preseason, Mostert quickly assumed the lion’s share of carries as RB1. Despite his status, the Dolphins attempted to replace him throughout the offseason, reportedly showing interest in both RBs Dalvin Cook and Jonathan Taylor. However, the Dolphins ultimately selected a rookie RB in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft, De’Von Achane, who is coming off a 50-point PPR game himself. Achane’s presence as a rookie should not hinder him in the Dolphins’ electric offense, and he has solidified himself as a true RB1 in my opinion. Mostert took the spot of my RB1 when I miraculously found him available on waivers to replace the injured Nick Chubb.

2023 Stats: Four games (four starts), 48 rushes, 249 yards, six TDs, 5.2 yards/carry, 13 receptions (15 targets), 115 yards, 8.8 yards/reception, one TD, two fumbles, seven rushing + receiving TDs.

Puka Nacua

Puka Nacua, the Samoan rookie sensation, has seamlessly stepped into Cooper Kupp’s role. After starting Week 1 of the season on nearly nobody’s roster, Nacua is now owned in 95% of ESPN fantasy leagues. Averaging over 20 points through three games, he has rapidly developed chemistry with Matthew Stafford and has been the go-to target for Stafford this season. It’s expected that Nacua’s volume will decrease when Kupp returns, but he has established himself as a valuable flex option throughout the year. Nacua has been a fantastic draft acquisition for the Los Angeles Rams and an excellent pickup for fantasy managers who secured him off waivers.

2023 Stats: Four games (four starts), 39 receptions (52 targets), 501 yards, 12.8 yards/reception, one TD, two rushes, four yards, 2.0 yards/carry, one fumble recovered.

Puka Nacua

Zack Moss

Amidst the controversy surrounding disgruntled star RB Jonathan Taylor, RB Zack Moss has taken the reins in Indianapolis and is making a strong case against paying Taylor. Moss was a late-round selection in my fantasy draft, knowing that Taylor (whom I also drafted) would be sidelined for at least the first four weeks. Most fantasy owners did not consider adding the player who would lead the Colts’ backfield at the start the year. However, everything changed when Moss returned from his own injury in Week 2. Since then, he has rushed for over 200 yards and scored a touchdown in two games, averaging over 20 fantasy points for the Colts. Time will tell if Moss maintains this level of performance, especially considering what may happen with Taylor. Nevertheless, with an 85% fantasy ownership, Moss has been an excellent waiver-wire pickup in many leagues while assuming the role of the Colts’ RB1.

2023 Stats: Three games (three starts), 66 rushes, 280 yards, one TD, 4.2 yards/carry, six receptions (eight targets), 42 yards, 7.0 yards/reception, one TD.

Jerome Ford

In the NFL and fantasy football, one thing you can never predict is unfortunate injuries. No one foresaw Browns’ star RB Nick Chubb suffering a serious injury in Week 2 of the NFL season. Those who lost Chubb for the season had to act quickly to add his backup, RB Jerome Ford, via waiver wires. Those who managed to acquire him likely got a starting-caliber running back in fantasy for the remainder of the year. Ford had a standout performance with over 20 fantasy points in the game that Chubb left and continued to produce double-digit points in Week 3. He is the classic waiver-wire gem, serving as the primary backup to an injured RB who will receive starting reps for the rest of the year.

2023 Stats: Four games (two starts), 50 rushes, 186 yards, one TD, 3.7 yards/carry, 10 receptions (13 targets), 77 yards, 7.7 yards/reception, two TDs, one fumble.

#9 Oregon Ducks Trounce the Stanford Cardinal 42-6

A strong start by the Stanford defense proved insufficient to contain Bo Nix and the now 5-0 Ducks’ explosive offense on Saturday.

Stanford initially controlled the ball, testing the Oregon defense and securing a 6-0 lead with two field goals from Joshua Karty. However, from that point forward, Oregon dominated. The Cardinal only gained six yards in the first quarter and failed to achieve a first down for nearly 20 minutes at the start of the game. The Ducks responded with two touchdown runs, courtesy of Jordan James and Bucky Irving, respectively. The first half concluded at 14-6 after a missed field goal from UO kicker Camden Lewis on the final play.

QB Bo Nix then took control of the game in the third quarter, throwing touchdown passes on two consecutive drives to begin the half and adding two more to conclude a potent offensive performance. Nix completed 27 of 32 passes for 290 yards and rushed for an additional 18 yards. Speaking about the Ducks’ slow start, Nix told reporters, “We just had to get settled in and find those things that work against what they were doing. Once that happened, we put up a lot of stuff.”

WR Troy Franklin continued his impressive performance, building on an outstanding outing last week against Colorado. He was targeted seven times and secured seven receptions for 117 yards. He also scored two touchdowns, including a 46-yard reception, which marked the longest play of the game.

The Ducks’ defense also excelled, limiting Stanford to six points from field goals and preventing them from reaching the end zone throughout the game. The Oregon defense recorded a total of five sacks on both of Stanford’s QBs.

Stanford quarterback Justin Lamson completed 11 of his 20 passes for 106 yards and rushed for 32 yards more. Backup Ashton Daniels briefly entered the game, completing three of four passes for 27 yards before leaving the field.

Stanford coach Troy Taylor summarized his team’s defeat, stating, “We didn’t put enough drives together in the second half. You’re playing with fire when you allow a team that is that talented to get as many opportunities.”

After this loss, Stanford’s record falls to 1-4, and they are set to face Deion Sanders’ Colorado Buffaloes on October 13. Meanwhile, the ninth-ranked 5-0 Oregon Ducks will take on the University of Washington in Seattle on October 14.

After a sluggish start, No. 23 Missouri surged ahead in the second quarter and maintained control to secure a 38-21 victory over Vanderbilt at FirstBank Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee on Saturday. The Tigers improved their season record to 5-0, setting the stage for a highly anticipated showdown with No. 13 LSU next weekend.

Missouri Took Care of Business

The Tigers scored two touchdowns in the second quarter, creating separation from the Commodores. MU quarterback Brady Cook had an outstanding performance, throwing for 401 yards and four touchdowns. He also connected with wide receiver Theo Wease Jr. for a 23-yard play. Shortly after, running back Cody Schrader rushed for a one-yard touchdown, giving Missouri a 10-7 lead. With only 55 seconds remaining in the first half, Cook found Wease in the endzone to extend MU’s lead to 17-7.

WR Luther Burden III led Missouri receivers with 140 yards and two touchdowns, both occurring in the second half. Cook connected with Burden for an 18-yard touchdown, increasing the Tigers’ lead to 24-7 lead at the start of the third quarter. Burden added another TD to make the score 38-21 with 4:23 left in the game. Freshman WR Marquis Johnson scored an early fourth-quarter touchdown on a 44-yard reception. Wease was the second-leading receiver for Missouri with 118 yards and a touchdown.

Cook also made history by breaking the all-time SEC record for most pass attempts without an interception, reaching 326 on Saturday.

Blake Baker’s defense put on an impressive performance against the Commodores’ offense. DB Kris Abrams-Draine secured his third interception of the season by picking off VU QB Ken Seals in the endzone with just over two minutes remaining in the third quarter. Defensive lineman Austin Firestone registered Missouri’s sole sack of the contest in the fourth quarter.
