No. 2 Kansas went on a commanding 20-2 run in the final six minutes of the first half to seal Missouri’s fate. MU lost 73-64 to the Jayhawks on Saturday at Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kansas. Despite continuing to battle in the second half, it wasn’t enough as the Tigers suffered their third-straight loss against KU.

Kansas Seizes Control in the First Half

Mizzou’s fortunes took a turn for the worse after they claimed a 27-21 lead with just over six minutes remaining in the first half. The Tigers could only manage one field goal for the remainder of the period…

Kansas forward KJ Adams Jr. drilled a jumper off an assist from Columbia native Dajuan Harris Jr. to start the 28-2 run. Kevin McCullar Jr. contributed a layup with just over five minutes to go. Former Missouri Tiger Parker Braun, now a KU forward, tied the game at 27 with a fast-break layup 22 seconds later.

The Jayhawks steadily built their lead following the final media timeout of the half. Adams found McCullar for a three-pointer, extending Kansas’ lead to 34-29 with 2:30 left. Harris then hit a jumper to give Kansas a three-possession lead.

Harris connected with Adams for a jump shot with 33 seconds remaining. On the next play, MU guard Nick Honor turned the ball over, returning possession right back to the Jayhawks. In the final second of the half, Tamar Bates fouled McCullar on a three-point attempt. The San Antonio, Texas native converted all three free throws from the charity stripe to put the Jayhawks up 41-29 at halftime.

Throughout the final six minutes, Missouri turned the ball over three times. Honor had two turnovers, and forward Noah Carter had one as well. The Tigers’ lone basket during that stretch was a goaltending violation against KU on a layup from Connor Vanover.

Missouri Refuses to Quit

Despite the halftime deficit, Dennis Gates’ team narrowed the gap to single digits multiple times in the second half. In a three-and-a-half minute time span, MU went on a 13-3 run with buckets made by Carter, Vanover, and Honor.

Carter converted a three-point play to cut KU’s lead to 54-39 with 11:07 remaining. Vanover made a more significant impact in the second half, hitting three consecutive jump shots. Honor scored from beyond the arc after Curt Lewis assisted him, reducing the deficit to 57-49 with 7:32 left.

Mizzou put together another run, this time going 7-2, in a final effort to pull out a miracle on Saturday. Honor drilled his fourth three-pointer of the game to make the score 64-54. Almost a minute-and-a-half later, Bates found sophomore Aidan Shaw for a bucket in the paint with 2:28 remaining. Sean East II scored a layup off Honor’s assist to trim the deficit to 66-58 with just over two minutes left.

Despite the loss, The Tigers had some positives to build on. East finished with 21 points and six assists. Honor concluded the matchup with 17 points, shooting 4-for-8 (50%) from three-point range. Carter recorded seven points and seven rebounds, and Shaw made an impact in the paint with two blocks.

NC State’s Wilson Wins 2023 Butkus Award

RALEIGH, N.C. – The 39th annual collegiate Butkus Award® honoring the nation’s best collegiate linebacker was presented today to North Carolina State University middle linebacker Payton Wilson. The award was presented formally during a surprise appearance by Matt Butkus, son of linebacker legend Dick Butkus.

The 6-4, 242-pound graduate student from Hillsborough, N.C., started all 12 games for the Wolfpack in 2023, leading a defense that ranks in the top 25 nationally in nine defensive categories. The ACC Defensive Player of the Year and five-time conference linebacker of the week, Wilson made 138 stops and 17.5 tackles for loss, along with ten pass breakups, a forced fumble, two recovered fumbles, and three interceptions with one returned for a score. Wilson played 46 games and had 36 starts during his collegiate career with the Wolfpack.

The Butkus Award Selection Committee said, “Payton Wilson set the standard for toughness, competitiveness and on-field leadership this fall. He lined up the defense and often was moving to the ball before the snap. His exceptional production, all-around performance and presence distinguished him at the top of this year’s Butkus Award winner.”

Wilson garnered 61% of first place votes and led the field with 37% of the overall vote, followed by Jeremiah Trotter of Clemson (29%), Ty’Ron Hopper of Missouri (16%), Edefuan Ulofoshio of Washington, and Nathaniel Watson of Mississippi State. Additionally, Edgerrin Cooper of Texas A&M and Tommy Eichenberg of Ohio State received write-in votes.

The Butkus Award selection committee focuses on qualities that defined Dick Butkus’ career: toughness, on-field leadership, competitiveness, football character and linebacking skills. Last season’s collegiate winner was Jack Campbell of Iowa (now Detroit Lions) and the pro winner was Roquan Smith of the Baltimore Ravens. This season’s high school winner was Sammy Brown of Jefferson, Ga. Three 2023 Butkus Award winners will be honored at an event Jan. 27, 2024, at Agua Caliente Resort Casino Spa in Rancho Mirage, Calif. Louisville, Ky. – Dec. 6, 2023 – Colorado sophomore cornerback/wide receiver Travis Hunter, an impact athlete who finished the regular season as the most prolific two-way player in FBS by averaging 119 snaps per game, was named winner of the 2023 Paul Hornung Award given annually to the most versatile player in major college football. The Award, presented by Texas Roadhouse, is owned and operated by the Louisville Sports Commission (LSC). LSC President and CEO Greg Fante made the announcement today.

The Paul Hornung Award Selection Committee, comprised of 17 sports journalists and football experts from across the country, picked Hunter from among the three finalists announced on Nov. 16. An online vote powered by Texas Roadhouse accounted for the 18th vote. The 14th winner of the Paul Hornung Award and the fifth from the Pac-12, Hunter played five positions on defense where he averaged 66 snaps per game; he also played four skill positions on offense where he played 50 snaps per game. Despite missing three games due to injury, on offense Hunter finished second on the team with 57 receptions for 721 yards and five touchdowns; on defense, he tied for the team lead with three interceptions, recorded 31 tackles, led the team with five pass deflections and had two tackles for loss. He also played substantial time on special teams.

“I want to thank the Louisville Sports Commission for this Award,” Travis Hunter said. “Paul Hornung accomplished great things that I also want to accomplish, and to be given the award in his name is truly amazing. I’d like to thank all my teammates for their support and Coach Prime for the opportunity to play both ways and do whatever I can to help the Colorado Buffaloes.”

Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders was effusive in his praise for Hunter. “Travis is a special player, a generational player, who has changed the game,” said Colorado Head Coach Sanders. “We had to find ways to utilize him to the best of his ability on both sides of the ball, where he could utilize his strengths and be a force. Thank you to the Selection Committee for seeing in Travis what we do, not only that he’s a tremendous player, but also a tremendous person. Travis hasn’t reached his full potential as of yet and his best is still to come.”

Primarily a wide corner, in several games this season Hunter was a standout on both sides of the ball. Against TCU, he caught 11 passes for 119 yards and made a key interception. Against Stanford, he played 154 snaps, caught 13 passes and made five tackles. He played 126 snaps versus Oregon, caught eight passes and made two tackles and deflected a pass. Against UCLA, he played 105 snaps, made two interceptions and had three receptions. Against Arizona, he caught five passes, made six tackles and had one pass breakup. In the season finale, in a tough road loss to Utah, Hunter played 103 snaps; on offense, he caught eight passes for 107 yards and a score; on defense, he made four tackles, including a tackle for loss.

Social voting — During the final two weeks of voting (Dec. 11 – Dec. 25), fans can vote directly on “X” (formerly Twitter) by tweeting the first and last name of the player, tagging the player’s official Twitter handle or creating a hashtag including the player’s first and last name. All three of these methods must include the hashtag: #ProBowlVote. During the final two days (Dec. 24 – Dec. 25), social votes will count as double.

Player selections will be determined by the consensus votes of fans, players and coaches, with each group’s vote counting as one-third toward determining the all-star players who will be selected to this year’s Pro Bowl Games. The NFL is the only sports league that combines voting by fans, coaches and players to determine its Pro Bowl teams. NFL players and coaches will cast their votes on Friday, Dec. 29.
