Brandon Aiyuk’s & the 49ers Reaches a Breaking Point

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is currently in a standoff with the team. He is demanding his release to sign with the Washington Commanders and reunite with his college quarterback, Jayden Daniels. Aiyuk has publicly called out the 49er’s leadership and terminated his representation. This multi-year, drama-filled timeline dates back to the 2023 season. In 2023, Aiyuk had a career year, recording more than 1,300 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. That’s while sharing touches with other star playmakers such as Christian McCaffrey, George Kittle, and Deebo Samuel.

The 49ers selected Aiyuk in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. After the 2023 season he wanted a contract extension. Following San Francisco’s Super Bowl loss, Aiyuk voiced his frustrations. He was claiming he was consistently open throughout the game. It was the theme of not getting the ball or not enough opportunities as the first read in head coach Kyle Shanahan’s progression. Aiyuk then created turmoil by holding out of offseason activities and was reportedly on the verge of being traded before Shanahan stepped in at the last second and overruled a deal that was in place.

Instead, the 49ers elected to give Aiyuk the contract extension he wanted. He eventually returned to practice but was later seen on video getting chewed out by Shanahan for not wearing the proper team colors. Aiyuk struggled at the start of the 2024 season, dropping more than 10% of his targets after posting just a 2% drop rate in 2023. Seven weeks into the season, he suffered a season-ending injury.

Since then, the turmoil has seemingly never ended. Aiyuk and the organization have not been on the same page publicly and have provided conflicting information regarding his recovery timeline. His status remained unclear throughout the entire 2025 season, and he ultimately never played a snap. During that time, Aiyuk continued posting on social media, frequently appearing to signal that he was unhappy with the organization and wanted to be traded.

That brings us to today, where Aiyuk has ramped up his social media activity even further, stating that he wants to play for the Commanders and expressing strong disdain for 49ers general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan. The 49ers have yet to make a deal, as Aiyuk’s trade value has obviously dropped because of his injury, large contract, and off-the-field drama. The organization has remained quiet recently, and it may ultimately have to release him without receiving anything in return after nearly three straight years of trade speculation. His public comments about wanting to join Washington have also given the Commanders significant leverage in any potential negotiations.

Among his most notable recent comments, Aiyuk said, “Tell them boys cut me today and I’ll sign with the Commanders tomorrow.” He also claimed he fired his agent because the agent represented both him and Lynch, and Aiyuk believed his agent was siding with the 49ers’ general manager. After all the drama, it remains possible that Aiyuk will once again not play a single down in the NFL, marking a second consecutive season on the sidelines.
