It’s summer time and in Louisville, KY that means it’s Dirt Bowl time! The Dirt Bowl is a Louisville institution.  This summer league tournament is the second-oldest annual outdoor basketball tournament in the United States. For 50 years it has brought the local basketball community together for fun, sports, and to embrace Louisville’s basketball culture. From former NBA players to local legends, the Dirt brings out all of those who have helped shape the sport in the Derby City.

The tournament is held at Shawnee Park in the city’s West end neighborhood. Over 400 participants are competing this year, including 24 men’s teams, four women’s teams, and six junior teams. Notable players who have played in the Dirt Bowl are University of Louisville icon Darrell Griffith, NBA champion Rajon Rondo, current NBA player D’Angelo Russell, and All-Star Butch Beard. For many, it’s been the proving ground before college scholarships and professional contracts.

The Dirt Bowl began in 1969. City park supervisors Ben Watkins and Janis Miller wanted to  people together and create a space for joy after the civil rights movement. The tournament first started at Algonquin Park. In 1970, it was relocated to Shawnee Park. The sidelines are often just as lively as the play on the court. Outside of the game are local DJs keeping the vibes high, food trucks serving up soul food and local small black businesses having a space to sell their products. The court is named after legendary Dirt Bowl announcer, Cornell Bradley.

It has also served as a platform for outreach as city leaders come to the game to be among the community. The tournament runs every weekend throughout the summer until the Championship Sunday game. The energy is high, the stands full, and all the players want bragging rights. Admission is always free, ensuring that the spirit of the community is always front and center. The Louisville Dirt Bowl continues to thrive as a center piece of a Louisville summer.
