2025 NBA Draft Winners and Losers

BROOKLYN — The 2025 NBA Draft delivered a night of both clarity and chaos. Duke’s Cooper Flagg went first overall to the Dallas Mavericks, setting the stage for a new era in Dallas. While the spotlight centered on top prospects, the night also reshaped several franchises—some for the better, others under a cloud of scrutiny.

Winners

Dallas Mavericks
The Mavericks struck gold by selecting Maine native Cooper Flagg, a 6-foot-8 forward whose two-way versatility could be transformational. “Being able to get Cooper — it’s a generational talent,” said GM Nico Harrison, via Dallas Hoops Journal. “We’re just super excited. Top to bottom.” Flagg’s elite defense, playmaking, and scoring ability offer a foundational piece for years to come.

Charlotte Hornets
Charlotte moved toward long-needed stability by drafting Duke sharpshooter Kon Knueppel at No. 4. Regarded as the best perimeter shooter in the class, Knueppel also brings maturity and high basketball IQ. “Kon Knueppel is a high-floor pick—a near-lock to be a good NBA player for a long time,” wrote James Plowright of Clture. His addition offers both structure and a steady presence for a franchise long seen as chaotic.

Philadelphia 76ers
With the No. 3 pick, Philadelphia selected Baylor guard V.J. Edgecombe—an athletic, defensive-minded wing who complements Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. The Sixers’ official X (formerly Twitter) account said it all in six words: “GOT OUR GUY. Welcome to Philly, @vj_edgecombe!” as reported by Reign Amurao of Yahoo Sports.
Though his stats may not dazzle at first glance, Edgecombe’s impact could be immediate. “Offensively, he has an explosive first step,” wrote Paul Hudrick of Liberty Ballers. “Defensively, he’s all over the court, wreaking havoc and forcing turnovers.”

Losers

New Orleans Pelicans
The Pelicans’ decision to trade the No. 23 pick and an unprotected 2026 first-rounder to Atlanta for Derik Queen at No. 13 raised eyebrows. “You don’t give up a potential top-10 pick in what scouts are calling a stacked 2026 class just to move up for a guy with starter upside,” a Western Conference executive told The Athletic, as quoted by Erich Richter in a June 26 New York Post article. It’s a risky move that could haunt New Orleans if Queen doesn’t become a star.

Utah Jazz and Ace Bailey
Ace Bailey’s decision to skip pre-draft workouts in hopes of steering his draft destination ultimately backfired, as he slid to No. 5. “There was plenty of criticism regarding Bailey’s detailed choice to forego individual workouts… in an effort to get to Washington, New Orleans, or Brooklyn,” noted Colin Ward-Henninger of CBS Sports. Now with Utah, Bailey faces added pressure to prove his commitment and avoid becoming a cautionary tale.

Chicago Bulls
Bulls fans were vocal in their frustration after the team selected Noa Essengue at No. 12—a project player rather than an immediate contributor. “Why did we not get Derik Queen!? What’re we doing Bulls… absolutely no faith in the front office man, s— is embarrassing,” one fan posted on X, according to Sports Illustrated’s Patrick Andres (June 27). The front office now faces an uphill battle to regain trust.

Looking Ahead

The 2025 NBA Draft served as a defining moment for teams across the league, emphasizing just how thin the line can be between brilliance and blunder. As the summer league kicks off, rookies from Dallas, Charlotte, and Philadelphia appear poised for instant contributions. Meanwhile, franchises like New Orleans, Utah, and Chicago must hope their gambles pay off. Draft night may be over—but the real test starts now. The league will be watching to see who rises and who fades.
