A hometown football star returned to his roots, bringing inspiration, mentorship, and gridiron skills to the next generation of Louisville athletes. Josh Minkins Jr., a Ballard High School graduate and former University of Louisville Cardinal football player, hosted his annual youth football skills camp on July 5. It was held at the Lynn Family Soccer Training Complex, the free camp welcomed over 200 young athletes from across the city. Minkins signed with the New England Patriots to start his NFL career.
Participants had the opportunity to learn directly from Minkins and several of his former UofL teammates, gaining hands-on instruction and motivation from players who once stood in their shoes. Another NFL player who helped with the camp was Quincy Riley who was selected by the Saints in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL draft. Together, Minkins, Riley, and the other coaches created an atmosphere of encouragement and possibility, leaving a lasting impression on everyone who took the field.
Minkins built an impressive collegiate football career. After four seasons with Louisville (2020–2023), he transferred to the University of Cincinnati for his final year of eligibility. During the 2024 season, Minkins played in 11 games, recording 45 total tackles, 4 passes defensed, and 2 interceptions. Over his five-year college career, he appeared in 49 games, tallying 132 tackles and 4 interceptions. But beyond the stats, Minkins has made it clear that giving back to his community is just as important as what he’s accomplished on the field.
“It means everything to me, for all my family and friends to come out and support. I love to see the kids come out and see a smile on their face.” Josh said. “Growing up in Louisville, you can get overlooked sometimes. I want the kids to know that it’s possible here. I want to show them that they can chase their dreams. Not only in football, but in life.”

In recognition of his impact and commitment to the youth of Louisville, Mayor Craig Greenberg officially proclaimed July 5th as Josh Minkins Day. This is a lasting tribute to a hometown hero making a difference. Minkins’ dedication to giving back, especially through his annual youth football camp, has made a meaningful difference in the lives of countless young athletes.
In giving advice to the youth, Josh said, “You have to sacrifice a lot. You have to separate yourself from the crowd. Put your head down, work, and stay consistent. Life is what you make it and you want to get out of life, you have to put a lot of effort and time into it.”

The camp has quickly become a summer staple in Louisville, offering more than just drills and football fundamentals. It’s about mentorship, community, and showing kids what’s possible when you work hard, stay focused, and never forget where you came from. For many of the participants, it’s their first time connecting with athletes who have walked the same halls, faced similar challenges, and risen to compete at the highest levels of college football and beyond.
