During his senior year at North Mesquite High School, Russell demonstrated his versatility and athleticism. He amassed 34 receptions for 725 yards and nine touchdowns. He also played on the defensive side of the ball as an edge rusher.
His impressive performance earned him Texas District 11-6A Newcomer of the Year honors as a sophomore. During the season he recorded 38 receptions for 638 yards and six touchdowns.
