Ducks take the final game of OSU series 7-1, avoid sweep

The Oregon State Beavers were aiming to complete a sweep of the Oregon Ducks in their three-game series on Sunday. However, a stellar performance from UO left-fielder Mason Neville, who hit two home runs and drove in three runs, dashed the Beavers’ hopes. Adding to the Ducks’ success was an outstanding display on the mound by pitcher Kevin Seitter, who threw 7 innings, allowing only one run on one hit. Seitter carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning before surrendering a solo home run to Brady Kasper.

Defensively, the Beavers faced challenges from the start, with Eric Segura struggling against the Ducks’ offense. Segura conceded two runs in the first inning, followed by Neville’s homer, giving the Ducks an early 3-0 lead. Despite facing considerable pressure, Segura kept the Beavers in contention until consecutive walks prompted a pitching change. Kellan Oakes entered the game in relief, but the Ducks managed to score another run with a sacrifice fly before Neville hit his second home run of the day, extending the Ducks’ lead. Nelson Keljo, a local talent from Portland, then took over pitching duties for the Beavers and delivered an impressive performance, tossing a season-high 3 1⁄3 innings, striking out six batters, and not allowing a hit.

In the final stretch, Kyle Scott relieved Keljo, conceding a solo home run to Bryce Boettcher but then retiring the Ducks’ side in the top of the ninth inning. “I wanted more today — as we all did,” expressed Beavers coach Mitch Canham after the game. “We won the series, OK, but that’s not our goal here, to just win the series. That creates complacency. So, (Saturday) after the game, we’re moving on. … We just had to pick up the energy a little bit sooner and not let one thing carry to the next.”

The Ducks and Beavers will face off once again on Tuesday at Oregon’s PK Park for another conference matchup.
