Recently signed kicker Ramiz Ahmed seized the MVP title after a clutch 46-yard field goal, propelling the Birmingham Stallions past the D.C. Defenders with a narrow 20-18 lead. While Ahmed’s performance shone in the critical moments, his overall contribution deserves recognition. He nailed all four of his field goal attempts, single-handedly contributing 12 points to the team’s total of 20.

This feat is particularly impressive given his limited preparation time for one of the season’s most significant matchups. The game kicked off positively for the offense, marching down the field after a forced fumble by Kenny Robinson Jr. However, a series of mishaps ensued, leading to consecutive turnovers for the Stallions and granting the Defenders multiple scoring opportunities. Just before halftime, Matt Corral and the offense finally found their rhythm, connecting on a pivotal 50-yard pass to Amari Rodgers for a touchdown.

Weather emerged as a pivotal factor, causing a nearly two-hour delay late in the second quarter. Upon resuming play, both teams emphasized the running game, placing the Stallions’ defense on the back foot as D.C. amassed 90 rushing yards, the most conceded by Birmingham in four weeks. Defensive improvements are imperative, as evidenced by two conceded touchdowns through the air and a lack of sacks.

Offensively, the Stallions struggled to gain momentum with Corral at the helm. Despite his impressive 291 total yards and a touchdown, the team faltered on third-down conversions. Yet, Corral’s composure shone through as he orchestrated the game-winning drive, showcasing his capability under pressure. Head coach Skip Holtz faces a challenging decision regarding the quarterback position moving forward.

While the victory marks a significant moment for the Stallions, it underscores several areas for improvement on both ends of the field. Issues with snaps, ball retention, and missed tackles demand immediate attention. With a daunting matchup against the winless Houston Roughnecks looming, Holtz must refocus the team’s efforts towards reclaiming championship form.
