WINNER: Indiana Fever

After enduring several lackluster seasons and missing the playoffs since 2016, the Indiana Fever’s fortunes appear to be on the upswing with the addition of yet another top-tier prospect. Clark’s arrival promises to elevate the team’s performance, joining forces with talents like Boston and NaLyssa Smith, the No. 2 overall pick in 2022.

While the Fever may face some growing pains in Clark’s debut season, their potential is undeniable. If they can maintain roster stability, they could become a force to be reckoned with in the near future. Additionally, the acquisitions of guards Celeste Taylor and Leilani Correa further bolster their depth, with Taylor poised to make an impact as a potential reserve.

LOSER: Nika Muhl’s

Despite her impressive college track record, Nika Muhl experienced an unexpected drop in the draft, landing with the Seattle Storm in the second round. While Muhl possesses first-round talent, lingering uncertainties about her potential ceiling contributed to her slide.

However, Muhl’s placement with the Storm may prove beneficial, given their need for a specialist like her. As an elite 3-and-D guard boasting a remarkable 40.8% conversion rate from long range, she has the opportunity to develop alongside established stars like Nneka Ogwumike, Skylar Diggins-Smith, and Jewell Loyd, offering her room to grow without excessive pressure.

WINNER: Chicago Sky and Los Angeles

The Chicago Sky and Los Angeles Sparks capitalized on having two top-10 picks, prioritizing size in their selections. Chicago secured Cardoso and Reese, fortifying their frontcourt for the future. While Cardoso’s athleticism and towering frame make her a standout, Reese’s addition adds depth and strength to the Sky’s lineup.

Similarly, the Sparks bolstered their roster by drafting Brink and Jackson, addressing the departure of Ogwumike with youthful vigor. These strategic moves position both teams for success in the seasons to come.

LOSER: Connecticut Sun

The Connecticut Sun’s decision to draft Leila Lacan, a speedy but unproven point guard, raises eyebrows. With concerns about Lacan’s shooting abilities and the team’s existing guard depth, questions arise about whether they could have made a more impactful choice, such as selecting Muhl.

Nevertheless, the Sun’s subsequent picks, including center Taiyanna Jackson and point guard Helena Pueyo, offer potential avenues for growth and development, with Jackson’s shot-blocking prowess standing out as a valuable asset.

WINNER: Kate Martin’s

In a heartwarming twist, Iowa guard Kate Martin, initially attending the draft to support her teammate Clark, found herself selected by the Las Vegas Aces in the second round. Despite being ranked much lower in ESPN’s projections, Martin’s selection highlights the unpredictability of the draft process.

Now, Las Vegas has the opportunity to mold Martin into a versatile role player, leveraging her shooting prowess and defensive versatility to their advantage. Only time will reveal the true potential of this unexpected but promising addition to the Aces’ roster.
