On Dec. 19, 2023, Ja Morant made a memorable return to the 2023-24 season after serving a 25-game suspension for flaunting a gun live on social media earlier during the year. The Memphis Grizzlies faced the New Orleans Pelicans and emerged victorious with a close score of 115-113, courtesy of Morant’s game-winning layup.
The Return of #12
Morant showcased his skills by contributing 34 points, eight assists, six rebounds, and a steal during his highly anticipated return. “I’m a dog,” Morant expressed to interviewers after the game. “I put the work in day in and day out. I haven’t played a game in eight months. Had a lot of time to learn about myself. A lot of hard days where I went through it but basketball is my life, what I love and (it’s) therapeutic for me and I’m excited to be back.”

The Grizzlies Faced Struggles
To no surprise, the team struggled during their star’s absence. The Grizzlies went 6-19 in that 25-game stretch, not getting their first win of the season until Nov. 5. They faced eight losses of 15 points or more, with five games where they failed to get even 100 points. Prior to Morant’s return, they were on a five-game losing streak.

Since his return, Memphis enjoyed an immediate four-game winning streak. Overall, the team secured six wins and three losses in the nine games Morant played for them. However, they held a 6-4 record in 10 games since Morant didn’t play on Dec. 28 due to illness. One of these games resulted in another close win against the Pelicans, with a score of 116-115 in overtime.
Morant Issues Apology
Morant faced suspension twice last year: first in March (which lasted eight games) for flashing a weapon in a Colorado strip club on Instagram Live and then on May 14, when he was seen flaunting a gun on Instagram Live for the second time. That one was enforced after the season was over, lasting 25 games this season, but he was suspended from all team activities since June 16.
In the wake of his suspension, Morant issued a sincere apology to the NBA, acknowledging his past behavior and conduct.

“To the kids who look up to me, I’m sorry for failing you as a role model. I promise I’m going to be better,” Morant said in the statement. “To all my sponsors, I’m going to be a better representation of our brands. And to all my fans, I’m going to make it up to you, I promise.”
A Minor Setback for A Major Comeback
Following his recent performances, fans certainly feel as though Morant is making amends to them. He has to deal with quite a few issues, including being part of a civil trial. Hopefully, the rising star aims for personal growth and positive influences around him.

Alas, It Was Not Meant to Be…
This serves as an update to the article, which was initially written a while back. Morant unfortunately suffered a season-ending right shoulder injury on Jan. 8 this year during a team practice.
