In the first half, first-year guard Zhuric Phelps (from Duncanville High School) was a standout performer for the Mustangs. Dayton’s duo of DaRon Holmes II and Koby Brea turned the game on its head with their combined 42 points, each scoring at least 20. The game saw numerous lead changes, especially in the last 10 minutes, with SMU pulling ahead by five points with just over five minutes left. However, Dayton’s tenacious response, highlighted by a 10-0 run, turned the tide in their favor.
Brea’s career-high 22 points, including crucial baskets in the game’s dying moments, were pivotal for Dayton. He was well supported by Holmes, who added 20 points, showcasing an all-around performance with rebounds, assists, and blocked shots. After a shaky first half, Dayton’s defense tightened up in the second, significantly reducing Southern Methodist’s field goal percentage. The game’s climax was as dramatic as it gets. With Dayton leading by two, SMU had possession with just 3.3 seconds left on the clock.

They highlighted the challenges posed by Dayton’s Holmes and the need for Southern Methodist to tighten their defense and rebounding going forward.
