Golden Grizzlies Fall to Spartans 5-4 in Overtime Thriller

The Oakland Golden Grizzlies kicked off their winter semester with a heartbreaking overtime loss to the Michigan State Spartans, falling 5-4 in a thrilling, back-and-forth matchup. Despite a strong showing throughout the game, Oakland ultimately could not hold on to their lead, with Michigan State capitalizing in the overtime period. Oakland started the game on a high note, taking an early advantage when Grant Dickinson found the back of the net midway through the first period.

However, Michigan State responded quickly, tying the game just minutes later, and the score remained even at 1-1 by the end of the first period. The Golden Grizzlies came out strong in the second period, reclaiming the lead with a goal from their leading scorer, Brandon Danou. But once again, Michigan State quickly responded, with their top scorer Joe Fracassi scoring to level the game at 2-2. As the period wound down, the Spartans found themselves with the upper hand, taking a 3-2 lead going into the third.

Oakland was far from finished, however, and they came out firing in the third period. Just one minute into the final frame, Nicolas Elizarov scored his third goal of the season to tie the game at 3-3. Barely a minute later, Alexander Sharpe found the back of the net to give the Golden Grizzlies a 4-3 lead, igniting the Oakland bench and putting them in a position to close out the game. The Golden Grizzlies fought to maintain their lead, but with just under five minutes remaining in regulation.

Michigan State’s defenseman Nolan Wiebanga capitalized on a rebound off of Oakland goalie Tate Potteiger’s pad to tie the game at 4-4. The Spartans, now full of momentum, carried that energy into overtime and, just six seconds into the extra frame, sealed the victory with a quick strike. The win provides Michigan State with a much-needed boost, improving their record to 11-5-1-1 on the season. On the other hand, despite the tough loss, Oakland earned a point for their efforts, keeping them in contention for the ACHA playoffs as the season continues.

Louisiana State Police announced on Friday, Dec. 10, that they have issued a warrant for the arrest of former LSU football standout Kyren Lacy. The 22-year-old Lacy is wanted in connection with a tragic crash that took place on Dec. 17, resulting in the death of 78-year-old former Marine Heaman Hall and leaving two other individuals injured. Lacy faces multiple charges, including negligent homicide, felony hit-and-run, and reckless operation of a vehicle.

According to Louisiana State Police, the accident occurred around 10 a.m. on Dec. 17, when Lacy’s vehicle allegedly collided with Hall’s car. Following the crash, police say Lacy fled the scene without alerting law enforcement or offering any help to the injured victims. Investigators are still piecing together details surrounding the incident but have emphasized Lacy’s failure to stay and assist as a key factor in their investigation.

In response to the allegations, Lacy’s agent, Rocky Arceneaux of Alliance Sports Management, issued a statement on behalf of the athlete. Arceneaux confirmed they were fully aware of the charges and reiterated Lacy’s commitment to cooperating with authorities throughout the investigation.

“We are aware of the allegations made regarding Kyren Lacy, and we want to take this opportunity to address them. First and foremost, Kyren is fully cooperating with the authorities. We strongly believe the facts will ultimately demonstrate the truth, but we respect the need for a full and thorough investigation. Out of respect for the investigation and everyone involved, we will not be making further comments at this time,” the statement read.

Lacy, who transferred to LSU in 2022 from another program, had a standout 2024 season as a wide receiver for the Tigers. 14. Pittsburgh Steelers

Record: 10-7

The Steelers are on a 4-game losing streak. While the defense has been solid the offense has been poor since Russell Wilson’s midseason revival. It now looks like a thing of the past and you can’t expect to win in January when you can’t move the ball. Steelers look like a one and done team against the Ravens.

13. Houston Texans

Record: 10-7

C.J. Stroud has struggled all year. But a banged-up line and receiving corps has led the team to struggle against playoff teams. The moment shouldn’t be too big for them, but they’ve been more sloppy than spectacular all season. They seem that the offensive injures will be too much to overcome.

12. Denver Broncos

Record: 10-7

Bo Nix isn’t getting enough credit for leading the Broncos to their first playoff berth since 2016. They have a top three scoring defense that can offset any offensive handicaps. Will the lights be too bright for Nix in his first playoff appearance?

11. Los Angeles Chargers

Record: 11-6

Justin Herbert has looked like he’s worth his contract. Jim Harbaugh has him playing disciplined and limiting his mistakes. But they do lack explosive play making. They rely on the running game and defense. The Chargers give up 17.7 points per game which is the best in the NFL.

10. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Record: 10-7

Todd Bowles teams are scrappy teams with tenacious defense. But this year Baker Mayfield Under new offensive coordinator Liam Coen unleashed fireworks and a high-powered offense. Bucky Irving is electricity from the running back position and giving them a balance offense.

9. Los Angeles Rams

Record: 10-7

Quarterback Matthew Stafford and head coach Sean McVay have won a Super Bowl.  This year they might have Aaron Donald, but they have an unstoppable connection with Puka Nacua and Cooper Kupp. Mcvay is one of the best coaches and can scheme his way to victory every game.

8. Washington Commanders

Record: 12-5

The rookie QB in the NFC, Jayden Daniels is electric. He has a quick throws and scrambling speed. Dan Quinn defense is solid but not great. This team is led by the Young QB and his connection Terry Mclaurin.  but Washington is banking almost exclusively on his athleticism, considering its otherwise sluggish backfield and so-so Dan Quinn-led defense.

7. Green Bay Packers

Record: 11-6

When he’s on his game, Jordan Love is a topflight QB. The pickup of Josh Jacobs balances out the offense giving a balance attack. Jaire Alexander will be out and he’s one of the best cornerbacks in the league. Love is now dealing with his third noticeable injury of the season and Christian Watson is out with an ACL injury. This limits their ability to stretch the field.

6. Minnesota Vikings

Record: 14-3

The Vikings might be the best Wild Card teams. Their season includes a nine-game win streak. Sam Darnold is the question mark. He can connect with his receives given solid protection. He showed MVP-caliber play under Kevin O’Connell. On defense Brian Flores has gritty group.

5. Buffalo Bills

Record: 13-4

They’ve had trouble overcoming Chiefs in the AFC. Josh Allen has to play hero. He will probably be the MVP. The Amari Cooper trade seems like it won’t workout. Still, Allen remains a dominant force and running back James Cook play making ability are underrated.

4. Philadelphia Eagles

Record: 14-3

Can Nick Sirianni’s play it safe at the right moments or will situational coaching outshine the team? If Jalen Hurts overcomes his concussion he has the best skill of players with  Saquon Barkley, A.J. Brown, and DeVonta Smith. Vic Fangio’s Defense has turned into one of the best in the league and plays with a physical edge.

3. Baltimore Ravens

Record: 12-5

The two-time MVP is having the best season of his career! With Lamar Jackson, the Ravens possess the most dangerous player in the NFL. The addition of Derrick Henry gives them a powerful running game capable of closing out games. While the defense can be inconsistent at times, their secondary remains a major strength.

2. Kansas City Chiefs

Record: 15-2

The reigning champions are going for a three peat. But this year they have lived dangerously on the edge. The offense has played subpar throughout the season but showed life down the stretch.  But Patrick Mahomes is the most clutch QB in the league. Andy Reid is one of the best coaches and Steve Spagnuolo is one of the best coordinators i history.

1. Detroit Lions

Record: 15-2

Dan Campbell’s Detroit Lions in 2024 have evolved from a scrappy underdog story to a legitimate NFL powerhouse. The team is spearheaded by Jared Goff’s decision making.  Jahmyr Gibbs made a significant leap in his second season, breaking off explosive runs. The defense has been patched together through injures. But the defense plays with a chip on its shoulder, thanks to defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn.

 

CFP Semifinals: A Clash of Titans – Penn State vs. Notre Dame & Ohio State vs. Texas

The College Football Playoff quarterfinals showcased an elevated level of competition, as fans filled bowl sites to witness thrilling matchups. Penn State shut down Ashton Jeanty and displayed offensive firepower to fend off Boise State. Texas held off a late surge from Cam Skattebo and Arizona State, while Ohio State had no trouble with the previously undefeated Oregon. Notre Dame capitalized on defense, special teams, and a dynamic dual-threat quarterback to defeat Georgia.

This sets up an exciting semifinal slate with Penn State facing Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl and Ohio State meeting Texas in the Cotton Bowl. While Ohio State might be the hottest team left in the field, the last SEC team standing is not to be overlooked. Meanwhile, both Penn State and Notre Dame have enjoyed impressive seasons and look to continue their playoff journeys toward the national championship. Both games should be thrilling, and I’m here to offer an analysis of what to expect when each team has the ball and who will emerge victorious when the dust settles.

Orange Bowl: Penn State vs. Notre Dame

Both Penn State and Notre Dame have been known for their inability to win the big game, but one of these teams will break that trend and advance to the national championship game. These two teams are mirror images of each other, with strong defenses, solid run games, difference-makers at quarterback, and solid special teams.

When Penn State has the ball, quarterback Drew Allar will look to move the offense downfield, targeting wide receivers Omari Evans and Tre Wallace, along with versatile tight end Tyler Warren. Penn State’s passing attack has improved since its early-season struggles, finding success during the postseason. In their 37-point performance in the Big Ten Championship against Oregon and in their deep shots against Boise State, the Nittany Lions quickly established a 14-0 lead.

However, the ground game remains Penn State’s strength. Running backs Kaytron Allen (134 yards on 17 carries) and Nick Singleton (87 yards on 12 carries) both averaged over seven yards per carry in the win over Boise State. While Boise State’s defense hit Allar several times, they also allowed big plays. Notre Dame’s defense, known for aggressive blitzing and creating turnovers, will look to replicate that style. Linebacker Jack Kiser and safety Xavier Watts have been key playmakers for the Irish, so Penn State must protect the football to avoid crucial turnovers.

When Notre Dame has the ball, their offense revolves around a powerful run game, led by running backs Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price, and dual-threat quarterback Riley Leonard. Leonard, who nearly matched his passing yards with rushing yards against Georgia, is a constant threat on designed quarterback draws. In the win over Georgia, Leonard even flipped over a defender to secure a first down. Love has been dealing with a knee injury, which could affect his performance, and Penn State’s linebacker Abdul Carter has been one of the nation’s top defenders. Carter, if fully healthy, will be a major factor in limiting Notre Dame’s ground attack. Carter’s presence could frustrate the Irish’s offensive rhythm, especially if Love is less than 100%.

The matchup will also feature a special teams battle. Notre Dame’s defense and special teams carried them to a 20-3 lead over Georgia, with Leonard contributing just 90 passing yards. Given Penn State’s stout defense, particularly its ability to stifle the run, Notre Dame will need to capitalize on special teams, field goals, and turnovers to stay competitive. With Penn State boasting a more explosive offense and a top-ten defense, it’s difficult to rely solely on special teams and turnovers for success.

Penn State’s kicker, Ryan Barker, has made over 80% of his field goal attempts, while Notre Dame’s Mitch Jeter has also been reliable in clutch situations. Despite Marcus Freeman’s brilliance as a coach, I believe the Nittany Lions will prevail. Penn State’s more explosive offense, strong defense, and the probability that Notre Dame’s luck from turnovers and special teams will not continue makes me lean towards a Penn State victory.

Prediction: Penn State 24, Notre Dame 17

Cotton Bowl: Texas vs. Ohio State

The expanded playoffs have reinvigorated the once-proud programs of Texas and Ohio State. Both teams have faced postseason struggles, with Ohio State haunted by four consecutive losses to Michigan and no Big Ten Championship titles, while Texas fell to Washington in last year’s CFP semifinals. Ohio State hasn’t won a national title since 2014, and Texas’ last championship came in 2005. But this year, both teams have an opportunity to rewrite history in the Cotton Bowl.

Ohio State may not enjoy a home-field advantage in Dallas, but their fans travel well, and the Buckeyes are the team to beat. After dominating Tennessee and Oregon in back-to-back playoff games, Ohio State has emerged as the hottest team in the field. On the other hand, Texas has shown grit, holding off a tough Clemson team and surviving a late Arizona State rally. However, Ohio State is nearly a touchdown favorite, and if Texas is to pull off the upset, they’ll need to avoid falling behind by double digits, as Tennessee and Oregon did.

On offense, Ohio State is loaded, with freshman standout Jeremiah Smith alongside veteran receivers Emeka Egbuka and Carnell Tate. Ryan Day and Chip Kelly have fully unleashed their receiving corps, and quarterback Will Howard has looked especially sharp, connecting with Smith for early strikes in both the Tennessee and Oregon games. Running backs TreVeyeon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins are a dynamic duo, with Henderson posting back-to-back games with two touchdowns and over 80 yards on the ground.

Texas will need to put pressure on Howard, with linebackers Colin Simmons and Trey Moore leading the charge. Texas also boasts the best secondary in the country, which will play a key role in containing Ohio State’s prolific passing attack. Cornerback Jahdae Barron is expected to match up against Smith, and safeties Andrew Mukuba and Michael Taafe will help shore up the backfield.

On defense, Ohio State’s defensive line has been a nightmare for opposing offenses, and they’ll look to exploit Texas’ offensive line. Defensive stars like Jack Sawyer, Tyliek Williams, and J.T. Tuimoloau will make it difficult for quarterback Quinn Ewers to establish a rhythm. Texas’ wide receivers Isaiah Bond and Matthew Golden will face off against Ohio State’s cornerbacks Denzel Burke and Jordan Hancock, with the Buckeyes’ star safety duo of Caleb Downs and Lathan Ransom providing additional support. Texas’ run game, led by Quintrevion Wisner and Jaydon Blue, will need to make an impact, with tight end Gunnar Helm offering a reliable outlet for Ewers.

On special teams, both teams have experienced inconsistencies at kicker. Ohio State’s Jayden Fielding missed crucial kicks in losses to Georgia and Michigan, but he rebounded in the playoff with successful attempts. Texas’ Bert Auburn has struggled as well, with a 64% conversion rate on field goals this season. If the game comes down to a field goal kick-off, whichever kicker rises to the occasion will likely play a pivotal role in the outcome.

Despite the challenges Texas presents, I have to give the edge to Ohio State. Since their loss to Michigan, the Buckeyes have been explosive, mixing run and pass to build commanding leads against elite teams. The indoor environment in Dallas should suit their offense well, and their defense has shown the ability to shut down high-powered offenses. Texas has been inconsistent, and while they have the talent to compete, I don’t think they have enough to overcome the Buckeyes in this semifinal.

2025 NFL Draft First Round Order

 NEW YORK –– Jan. 6, 2025 –– The Tennessee Titans hold the No. 1 pick in the 2025 National Football League Draft, which is scheduled for April 24-26 in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

The tentative order of the first round was announced today by the NFL, subject to the results of the playoffs.

The draft order is determined by the following procedures:

  1. The winner of the Super Bowl game selects last and the loser selects next-to-last in all rounds, regardless of the record of the clubs in the regular season.
  2. The losers of the Conference Championship games select 29th and 30th in all rounds, according to the reverse order of their standing.
  3. The losers of the Divisional Playoffs select 25th through 28th in all rounds, according to the reverse order of their standing.
  4. The losers of the Wild Card games select 19th through 24th in all rounds, according to the reverse order of their standing.
  5. Clubs not participating in the playoffs select in the first through 18th positions in all rounds, according to the reverse order of their standing.

If, after all the foregoing procedures have been applied, ties still exist in any grouping except (A) above, such ties shall be broken by figuring the aggregate won-lost-tied percentage of each involved club’s regular season opponents and awarding preferential selection order to the club which faced the schedule of teams with the lowest aggregate won-lost-tied percentage.

If ties still exist between teams in the same division or the same conference, the divisional or conference tie-breaking method is used, whichever is applicable.

If ties still exist, the procedures for breaking ties for teams of different conferences shall be applied.

Denver, Pittsburgh, and Tampa Bay have the same record and strength-of-schedule; applicable tiebreakers will be applied subject to postseason results.

Clubs involved in two-club ties will alternate positions from round-to-round. In ties that involve three or more clubs, the club at the top of a tied segment in a given round will move to the bottom of the segment for the next round, while all other clubs in the segment move up one position. This rotation continues throughout the Draft.

The NFL 2025 Opponents Determined

NEW YORK ­— Jan. 6, 2025 — The NFL has determined each team’s 2025 regular-season opponents, the league announced today.

Under the NFL scheduling formula, every team plays 17 games as follows:

  • Home and away against its three division opponents (six games).
  • The four teams from another division within its conference on a rotating, three-year cycle (four games).
  • The four teams from a division in the other conference on a rotating, four-year cycle (four games).
  • Two intraconference opponents based on the prior year’s standings (two games). These games match a first-place team against the first-place teams in the two same-conference divisions the team is not scheduled to play that season. The second-place, third-place and fourth-place teams in a conference are matched in the same way each year.
  • One interconference opponent based on the prior year’s standings on a rotating four-year cycle (one game). These games match a first-place team from one division against a first-place team in an opposite-conference division that the team is not scheduled to play that season. The second-place, third-place and fourth-place teams in each division are matched in the same way each year. The home conference for this game will rotate.

The 2025 schedule, with playing dates and times, will be announced in the spring.

NFL Announces Collaboration With Kristin Juszczyk, Emma Grede and Fanatics to Launch Apparel Brand ‘Off Season’

NEW YORK – Jan. 7, 2025 –  Emma Grede, the National Football League, Kristin Juszczyk and Fanatics announced today the launch of Off Season, a luxury fashion brand redefining the intersections of football, sports and fashion. Set to debut today, Jan. 7, Off Season will introduce its premiere collection of unisex puffer jackets inspired by a selection of iconic NFL teams, available at OffSeasonBrand.com, NFLShop.com, Fanatics.com and team sites.

Off Season has been granted the official use of NFL players’ names and numbers through a license with the NFL Players Association and will develop product highlighting numerous NFL stars. The debut collection will represent five NFL teams—the San Francisco 49ers, Kansas City Chiefs, Philadelphia Eagles, Detroit Lions and Buffalo Bills—offering puffer vests, puffer jackets and long coats that highlight players from each team in Juszczyk’s signature spliced designs.

Why the Chicago Bears Have the Best NFL Coaching Opening

The Chicago Bears began the 2024 season with promise, holding a solid 4-2 record early on. However, their momentum faltered as poor coaching decisions, particularly regarding clock management, led to a midseason collapse. Now as the team turns to the 2025 season, the opportunity to develop a young quarterback in Caleb Williams should be the main focus for the next head coach.

Williams showed flashes of his potential to be the Bears’ franchise quarterback for years to come. But much of that promise has been held back by ineffective coaching. Bears have been known for not developing QBs for the past two decades. His 2024 stats—3,541 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions—illustrate the room for growth. He ranked 18th in passing yards, 15th in touchdowns, and 28th in QBR with a rating of 46.5.

The Bears roster has several players with long term talent for team success. Rome Odunze and DJ Moore are exciting play makers and skilled Cole Kmet provides a reliable tight end. Outside of the skill players offensive line remains a weak point. The Bears are projected to have significant salary cap space in 2025 and a top 10 draft pick to address their issues. This offense should’ve been a top 15 offense not in the bottom offense.

While the Bears showed early promise with a 4-2 record, their season unraveled due to coaching missteps. The Bears hoped that Williams, and veteran additions Keenan Allen and D’Andre Swift could spark the offense and help the young QB. Instead, the unit took a step backward, finishing dead last in total yardage, a far cry from the offensive resurgence the team had envisioned. The offense showed more offensive spark under Justin Field with his supreme running ability.

An offensive-minded coach should be able to turn this offense to an improved unit.  The NFC North is one of the most competitive divisions in the league, with all three of its other teams making the playoffs in 2024. To compete in such a tough division, the Bears need a head coach who can transform their promising roster into a high-performing offense. With Caleb Williams at the helm, the future of the franchise hinges on hiring a coach who can help him reach his full potential.
