The NFL world was stunned by the news that Bill Belichick was not selected as a first-ballot Hall of Famer. The decision sent shockwaves throughout the sports world. Belichick is a six-time Super Bowl champion as a head coach and a two-time Super Bowl champion with the New York Giants in 1986 and 1990. He is also second all-time in total wins, including postseason victories, with 333—trailing only Don Shula, who finished with 347. Despite this résumé, only 40 of the 50 Hall of Fame voters selected Belichick. It left him 10 votes short of unanimous induction.

That raised one major question: why? There are several possible reasons behind this outcome. One major factor is Belichick’s involvement in two of the NFL’s most controversial scandals: Spygate and Deflategate. Spygate occurred during the 2007 season when a Patriots video assistant was caught filming the New York Jets’ sideline. It included footage of coaches and their defensive signals.

Additionally, two NFL teams reported that the Patriots had recorded their coaches’ signals during the 2006 season. At the time, Roger Goodell had only been the NFL commissioner for 18 months. The league fined Belichick $500,000, fined the Patriots $250,000, and stripped New England of a first-round draft pick. Patriots owner Robert Kraft expressed regret for the mistake and emphasized his respect for the other 31 owners in the league. Belichick, however, maintained that he believed the practice was legal, later stating simply, “My mistake.”

The second major controversy came on January 18, 2015, when the Indianapolis Colts faced the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game with a Super Bowl berth on the line. The Patriots dominated the Colts in a 45–7 blowout to advance to the Super Bowl. They would eventually defeat the Seattle Seahawks in one of the most iconic finishes in NFL history—Malcolm Butler’s game-sealing interception of Russell Wilson at the goal line instead of a handoff to Marshawn Lynch.

The controversy began during the AFC Championship Game when 11 of the 12 footballs used by Tom Brady were found to be slightly underinflated. Colts linebacker D’Qwell Jackson intercepted Brady, prompting the Colts’ equipment staff to check the football’s pressure, which was found to be below the league’s minimum requirement. Officials replaced the footballs with regulation balls, but the damage was already done.

The Patriots outscored Indianapolis 28–0 in the second half, putting the game completely out of reach. A deflated football is considered easier to grip, catch, and carry, and reports later suggested that Brady had a general awareness of what was happening. The NFL ultimately suspended Brady for four games at the start of the following season. These two scandals alone may explain why some voters believe Belichick should wait another year for induction.

Still, the numbers are undeniable. Belichick is an eight-time Super Bowl champion with 333 total wins. Many believe he should not have to wait another year for Hall of Fame recognition. His induction is inevitable. Tom Brady voiced his confusion, saying, “I don’t understand it.

If he’s not a first-ballot Hall of Famer, there’s really no coach that should be a first-ballot Hall of Famer.” Other athletes, including Patrick Mahomes, J.J. Watt, Ryan Clark, and even LeBron James, echoed similar sentiments. Whether this decision was meant as punishment or an attempt to tarnish Belichick’s legacy, it has raised serious questions about the Hall of Fame voting process itself.
