2025–26 NBA MVP Race: The Stars Poised to Shine Brightest

With the 2025–26 NBA season fast approaching, the race for the league’s Most Valuable Player award is already heating up. Preseason predictions are rarely certain, but early odds provide a glimpse into which stars are expected to shine brightest this year. The frontrunners are familiar names—Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Luka Dončić, Nikola Jokić, Victor Wembanyama, and Giannis Antetokounmpo—each representing a different blend of dominance, leadership, and storyline intrigue.

Leading the early projections is Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, last year’s MVP and the heartbeat of an Oklahoma City Thunder team that looks poised to contend for another deep playoff run. His scoring versatility, two-way defense, and calm leadership have turned him into one of the most complete players in basketball. Even so, repeating as MVP is notoriously difficult—only a handful of players in NBA history have done it—so Shai will have to elevate his game even further while guiding a young but hungry Thunder squad through the grind of another 82-game season.

Close behind him is Nikola Jokić, the definition of consistency and a perennial MVP threat. His unselfish playstyle and unmatched efficiency make him a nightly triple-double waiting to happen. The Serbian superstar rarely has an off night, but his MVP hopes, as always, depend on team success. If Denver can stay among the Western Conference elite, Jokić’s steady excellence could easily earn him a third trophy—especially if voters lean toward rewarding his sustained dominance over flashier storylines.

Luka Dončić, meanwhile, continues to tantalize fans and analysts alike with his limitless potential. His combination of scoring, vision, and flair makes him one of the most unstoppable offensive players in the game. Yet, as past years have shown, MVP voters value wins as much as highlights. For Luka to make his long-awaited MVP breakthrough, the Dallas Mavericks must establish themselves as a true contender. If he can stay healthy, improve his efficiency, and cut down on turnovers, this could finally be the season that the narrative aligns in his favor.

Then there’s Giannis Antetokounmpo, the two-time MVP and former champion whose physical dominance remains unmatched. Giannis continues to terrorize defenses with his relentless drives and elite defense, but the Bucks’ inconsistency last season left questions about how far they can go. If Milwaukee can find its rhythm again under new leadership and Giannis stays on the floor, he’ll be right back in the thick of the MVP conversation.

Rounding out the group is Victor Wembanyama, the league’s most fascinating young talent and the potential face of the NBA’s future. In just his second year, Wemby’s mix of size, defensive instincts, and guard-like finesse already has fans whispering about an MVP run down the road. If he can propel the Spurs into playoff contention and sustain elite two-way production, he could fast-track that timeline and make legitimate noise in this year’s race.

As the season tips off, the MVP chase looks like a thrilling clash between Gilgeous-Alexander and Jokić, with Dončić, Giannis, and Wembanyama lurking close behind. Over the course of an 82-game grind, narratives shift and new stars emerge—but as it stands, the 2025–26 campaign could deliver one of the most competitive and unpredictable MVP battles the league has seen in years.
