Taking over the program will be Auburn’s associate head coach—and Bruce’s son—Steven Pearl. The university wasted no time in solidifying the move, signing Steven to a five-year contract as he begins his head coaching career. Steven played for his father at Tennessee from 2007–2011 and has been part of Auburn’s coaching staff since 2014, learning the ins and outs of the program from the ground up. While his promotion represents continuity, the challenge will be stepping out from his father’s long shadow and proving he can lead Auburn in his own right.
Bruce Pearl leaves behind an incredible legacy on The Plains. Over his 11 seasons, he compiled a record of 246–125, guiding the Tigers to six NCAA Tournament appearances, including two Final Four runs. He also delivered three SEC regular season championships and two SEC Tournament titles. Beyond the wins and accolades, Pearl transformed Auburn from an afterthought in college basketball into a national contender, regularly attracting top-level recruits and raising the program’s profile to heights rarely seen before his tenure.
Still, despite the familiarity of this transition, questions remain. The timing of the announcement—just over a month before the start of the season—creates challenges for a team already deep in preparations. Even if Auburn has been planning this change behind the scenes, the short notice puts added pressure on the coaching staff to maintain stability.
Another complication is the NCAA’s transfer portal rules. When a head coach steps down, players are granted a special 30-day transfer window to explore other opportunities. Promoting Steven Pearl may help minimize roster turnover, as players already know and trust him, but in today’s college basketball landscape nothing is guaranteed. Rival programs will surely test Auburn’s ability to hold on to its talent.
