The SEC set a new record for the most teams from a single conference in the NCAA tournament, with 14 teams representing the SEC this year. This surpasses the previous record held by the Big East, which sent 11 teams to the tournament in 2011. What makes this record even more impressive is that the SEC has only 16 teams in total, meaning nearly the entire conference is represented. LSU and South Carolina are the only SEC schools that failed to make the tournament. The second-most teams in the tournament this year come from the Big Ten, which has 8 teams.
All season long, the SEC was regarded as the best conference in college basketball, and this performance solidifies that reputation. The SEC went 14-2 in the ACC-SEC Challenge, and throughout the season, fans were treated to numerous high-stakes, ranked matchups in conference play, including multiple games featuring top-10 teams. Auburn dominated the SEC regular season and earned the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA tournament. Florida, which defeated Auburn in their only meeting and went on to win the SEC tournament, also secured a No. 1 seed. Additionally, Alabama and Tennessee earned No. 2 seeds.

While the SEC has emerged as a dominant basketball conference over the past few seasons, its postseason success has been limited. The last SEC team to win an NCAA championship was Kentucky in 2012. In fact, the conference hasn’t made it to the national championship game since 2014, when Kentucky lost to UConn. However, the SEC is hopeful that this year could be different, with multiple teams entering the tournament with a legitimate chance to win the national title.
