The NBA took over Super Bowl week. Multiple teams have made moves in an effort to improve their rosters before the playoffs. Several All-Stars have changed teams, including Luka Dončić, Anthony Davis, and De’Aaron Fox. Now, another big-name All-Star is on the move as Jimmy Butler has been traded to the Golden State Warriors in a four-team deal. The trade sends Andrew Wiggins, Kyle Anderson, P.J. Tucker, and a 2025 first-round pick to the Miami Heat.

Dennis Schröder, who the Warriors traded for in December, is being sent to the Utah Jazz. Meanwhile, the Detroit Pistons will receive Lindy Waters III and Josh Richardson as part of the deal. Butler and the Miami Heat seemed like a perfect match, with Butler’s aggressive mindset aligning with the team’s “Heat Culture.” He bounced between the Chicago Bulls, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Philadelphia 76ers before finding a home in South Beach for six seasons.
During that time, the Heat made the playoffs every year, reached three Eastern Conference Finals, and made two Finals appearances. However, Butler has had contract and relationship issues with previous organizations, and that has continued in Miami this season. He has been suspended by the Heat three times this year, with the most recent suspension starting on January 27 after he left a team shoot-around when informed he would be coming off the bench.
This trade gives Miami a fresh start, removing a potential issue from the locker room while still adding pieces to the roster with Andrew Wiggins. The Heat are currently the 6th seed in the East, avoiding the play-in tournament for now. However, they are only one game ahead of the 7th-seeded Detroit Pistons, with roughly 30 games left in the season. The Golden State Warriors are another key team involved in this trade, and they finally get the All-Star pairing they’ve been searching for to complement Steph Curry.

Butler will be a strong second scoring option and bring tenacious defense that will mesh well with Draymond Green. The Warriors are currently the 11th seed in the West, sitting outside of the play-in tournament, so they have a lot of work ahead to turn their season around. One of the key outcomes for the Warriors in this trade is that they were able to secure Butler on a two-year contract. While they may not have enough time to salvage this season, the organization can at least build for the future.
