Michael Vick, one of the most electrifying quarterbacks in NFL history. He forever reshaped the way the position is played. Over his career, Vick’s unique playing style distinguished him from his peers. His career was not only defined by his dynamic playing style but also by his groundbreaking achievements that changed the expectations for quarterbacks in the modern NFL. Before Vick, the expectation was for quarterbacks to stay in the pocket, but his dynamic running ability, combined with his strong arm, forced defensive coordinators to rethink how to defend the position.

His influence on the NFL is evident in the rise of mobile quarterbacks who now use their legs as a crucial weapon. Players like Russell Wilson, Cam Newton, and Lamar Jackson have all followed in Vick’s footsteps, showing that quarterbacks can excel both in the passing and running games. As he helped reshape football, he may be looking to help reshape the sport again.

Sacramento State has recently met with the former NFL star about its open head coaching position. “He has expressed interest in the position, and yes, I did meet with him about his interest in Sac State football and our athletic rise,” President Luke Wood said. “As you can imagine, given the success of our athletic programs, our football head coach job is an attractive role.”

The university plans to move up to the FBS. In the works is a new stadium and over $50 million in NIL funds. The Sacramento State job became available after Andy Thompson, who had been the Hornets’ head coach for the past two seasons, left for an assistant head coaching role at Stanford. The Hornets finished the 2023 season 3-9 and in 11th place in the Big Sky Conference. Vick was also interviewing for the head coaching position at Norfolk State, according to the Virginian-Pilot. His hometown of Newport News, Virginia, is near Norfolk State’s campus.

As a player, Vick carried Virginia Tech to the 1999 national championship game, where they were defeated by Florida State 46-29. In the 2001 NFL Draft, the Atlanta Falcons made history by selecting him as the first Black quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick. Vick played 143 games in his career, starting 126 of them. His statistics reflect his dual-threat prowess: he was just as dangerous with his legs as he was with his arm. Over his career, he completed 1,889 passes out of 3,217 attempts, amassing 22,464 passing yards.

His 133 passing touchdowns and 88 interceptions highlight his aggressive playing style, though his willingness to take risks often led to occasional mistakes. Vick’s completion percentage was 58.2%, and his passer rating stood at 80.4. But it was his rushing that set him apart from pocket passers. Vick rushed the ball 1,039 times for 6,109 yards and 36 rushing touchdowns. Vick also led his teams to the playoffs five times proving that his unique playing style could succeed in the postseason.

His ability to perform under pressure was essential to his success, both in regular-season and playoff games. In 2006, Vick made history as the first quarterback in NFL history to rush for over 1,000 yards in a single season, finishing with 1,039 rushing yards. Vick’s playing style was a radical departure from the traditional pocket-passer model that dominated the NFL for decades.

His ability to scramble, evade defenders, and turn broken plays into explosive gains redefined what was possible for quarterbacks. Michael Vick’s legacy extends beyond his impressive stats. He revolutionized the quarterback position by demonstrating that dual-threat quarterbacks could not only survive but thrive in the NFL. His impact continues to be felt today, as Vick remains one of the most groundbreaking players the league has ever seen.
