The University of Kentucky’s football program has agreed to sanctions imposed by the NCAA for rule violations. The penalties include a two-year probation period and the vacating of all 10 victories earned during the 2021-2022 season. This action comes after the discovery of 11 players in the Kentucky sports program who have received impermissible benefits. They were offered NIL money without fulfilling any requirements of the NIL.

The situation began to unfold when the university self-reported these violations in September 2022. As part of its commitment to addressing the issue, Kentucky took immediate steps to address the situation internally. Two key players, star running back Chris Rodriguez and linebacker Jordan Wright, were benched at the start of the 2022 season. These players were initially sidelined due to what was publicly described as an undisclosed off-the-field issue. Rodriguez and Wright had both played in every game during the 2021 season. Which is now under scrutiny due to these violations.
The NCAA’s investigation into the matter determined that the infractions fell into the Level 2 category. This classification represents a less severe tier within the NCAA’s structured system for categorizing significant violations. Despite this classification, the sanctions imposed are substantial and include both a financial penalty and the vacating of all 10 victories from the 2021 season. This also includes the notable Citrus Bowl victory over Iowa, which was a highlight of that season. Additionally, the university will be under a two-year probation period, which will include closer oversight by the NCAA.

In response to the NCAA’s ruling, UK President Eli Capilouto issued a statement on Friday addressing the outcome. “Once the University of Kentucky became aware of the issues, we undertook a comprehensive investigation to understand the extent of the violations. We reported our findings to the NCAA and implemented our own set of sanctions to address the infractions. Much of this process has already been communicated and reported publicly. Today’s announcement by the NCAA represents the final determination and enforcement of sanctions concerning the UK Athletics program. We respect the NCAA’s findings and have fully engaged in the investigative process. We accept the final resolution and are committed to moving forward with integrity, transparency, and a renewed focus on maintaining the highest standards within our athletic programs.”
The university’s response highlights its commitment to compliance and accountability while acknowledging the need to uphold the integrity of its athletic programs. Moving forward, Kentucky will work under the constraints of the probation period, which will include increased scrutiny and oversight from the NCAA to ensure that similar violations do not occur in the future. The university’s leadership is focused on implementing measures to prevent future infractions and restoring confidence in its football program.
