As the 2024 season approaches, every AFC West team has made changes aimed at contending for the Super Bowl. While the Kansas City Chiefs have dominated the AFC West for the past eight seasons, fans shouldn’t assume this year’s division race is decided. Each team has reasons to be optimistic.
Denver Broncos: A Mile High Hope

Since Peyton Manning’s retirement after the 2015-2016 season, the Denver Broncos have struggled to find a franchise quarterback. From Paxton Lynch to the departure of Russell Wilson, their QB experiments have largely failed. This offseason, they aim to change course by selecting Oregon University’s standout QB Bo Nix in the first round. Nix led the nation with 45 touchdown passes in 2023, along with over 4,500 passing yards and just three interceptions. If Nix can carry his efficiency to the NFL, the Broncos could emerge as a dark horse in 2024.
Kansas City Chiefs: New Weapons for Mahomes

Fresh off their Super Bowl LVIII win, the Chiefs seek to make history with a third consecutive championship. Addressing a major weakness from last season, Kansas City revamped its wide receiver corps. In 2023, Chiefs receivers dropped a league-leading 6.9% of passes, contributing to some crucial losses. The team signed Marquise “Hollywood” Brown and drafted lightning-fast Xaiver Worthy in the first round. Worthy set a combine record with a 4.21-second 40-yard dash. If this trio—Brown, Worthy, and incumbent star Jerry Rice—can reduce drops, Mahomes and the Chiefs will be strong contenders for another Lombardi Trophy.
Las Vegas Raiders: Maxx Crosby Leading the Defense

Despite finishing below .500 last season, the Raiders found a bright spot in defensive end Maxx Crosby, who had a career year with 90 tackles and 14.5 sacks in 2023. However, Las Vegas’s defensive line totaled just 46 sacks, middling in the league. Rookie Tyree Wilson’s underwhelming debut added to their struggles. As a veteran leader, Crosby’s role will be crucial in elevating the defensive line’s performance, including developing Wilson, to transform into an elite unit in 2024.
Los Angeles Chargers: Offensive Revamp for Herbert

The Chargers endured a forgettable 2023 season, marked by Justin Herbert’s injury and mid-season coaching change. Finishing last in the AFC West with a 5-12 record prompted a shift to an offensive-minded head coach. Jim Harbaugh, fresh off leading Michigan to a championship, now leads the Chargers. Known for maximizing quarterbacks’ talents, Harbaugh aims to unleash Herbert’s potential. Herbert, at his best, ranks among the NFL’s top quarterbacks. If Harbaugh can tailor the offense to showcase Herbert’s strengths, the Chargers could emerge as a formidable force in the upcoming season.
