Tom Pelissero of NFL Network has reported that some NFL owners about a salary cap specifically for quarterbacks. Pelissero noted, “There certainly has been discussion within the league among certain owners about even the idea of a quarterback cap, that at some point you want quarterback numbers to not go over a certain percentage of your salary cap. To my knowledge, that hasn’t really gained traction, in part because so many teams have paid their quarterbacks. If you went to suddenly an NBA model where all of a sudden you have the max and the supermax and there’s really only a couple levels that guys can get paid at, it kind of changes the dynamics in terms of how you set yourself up salary cap-wise.”

This raises an important question about the sustainability of current quarterback salaries. It’s clear that quarterbacks play a critical role in the success of an NFL team. But their escalating salaries do not necessarily correlate with producing champions. Daniel Jones, a quarterback who never made a Pro Bowl is making an average annual salary of $40 million. No other position player in the sport is making more than an average of $35 million on their current deals.

Teams often allocate a significant portion of their salary cap to quarterbacks. In return they have to cut worthy vets at other positions. The high guarantees in quarterback contracts reflect their critical role but also pose substantial financial risks. This approach can strain a team’s resources and limit their ability to sign and retain key players at other positions.

Quarterback contracts typically include substantial guarantees. These high guarantees can impact a team’s flexibility in managing their overall salary cap. A successful NFL franchise requires a balance of talent across all positions. Overpaying for a quarterback like Daniel Jones can limit a team’s ability to sign elite position players.

This imbalance can hamper a team’s competitiveness and long-term success. An alternative strategy for managing quarterback salaries is to focus on developing a young quarterback or investing in a mid-tier quarterback while strengthening other key positions. This approach might offer a more sustainable path to building a competitive team, as it allows for a more balanced allocation of the salary cap.

If starting an NFL franchise from scratch, the decision to pay a player like Daniel Jones more than elite position players hinges on the fundamental dynamics of football, particularly the critical importance and impact of the quarterback position. While quarterbacks are essential, the current financial imbalance in their contracts raises questions about the most effective strategies for building and maintaining a successful team. Balancing high quarterback salaries with the need to develop and retain talent across all positions remains a key challenge for NFL franchises.
