FC Cincinnati began the season with inconsistency, possibly with a hangover of the disappointment from their near-miss in the 2023 end-of-season playoffs. However, under the leadership of Pat Noonan, the team has experienced a remarkable turnaround since mid-April. They have victories in eight of their last nine MLS matches. Despite the impressive win streak, Cincinnati’s victories have been hard-fought, with none secured by more than a two-goal margin.

There are some things to work on. Defensive vulnerabilities have surfaced, with Cincinnati conceding seven goals in their last three matches. This includes a 2-0 defeat to Nashville, highlighting the team’s struggle to maintain a solid defense. Offensively, Cincinnati has shown improvement, especially in high-scoring victories against Toronto FC and San Jose Earthquakes, with 4-3 and 4-2 scorelines respectively. Matt Miazga was injured agianst the Earthquakes. That could be critical for Cincinnati for the rest of the season.
As they prepare to face Philadelphia Union, Cincinnati holds a significant points advantage. Philadelphia, trails by 16 points and the recent performance saw them narrowly lose 2-1 to Inter Miami, even when Miami was reduced to nine men. Jim Curtin’s Philadelphia Union has struggled to replicate their success from last season. They finished fourth in the Eastern Conference. With only five losses in 17 games, their performance has been underwhelming. A lone victory in 11 outings against the bottom-placed New England Revolution shows their current plight.

Curtin is hopeful that his team can overcome their recent setbacks and draw inspiration from their past successes. The upcoming match against Cincinnati is crucial, and Philadelphia aims to bounce back from their recent disappointment and secure a vital win. Cincinnati’s season seems well on the way to the playoffs. As they face Philadelphia Union on Junetenth 2024, both teams are determined to overcome their respective challenges and emerge victorious in this pivotal clash.
