J.B. Bickerstaff led the Cavs to their most successful time since Lebron James left. He led them to their first playoff round win in 6 years. But the Cleveland Cavaliers wasted no time in charting a new course, beginning with the dismissal of head coach J.B. Bickerstaff. They feel they have a roster that could make a deeper playoff run. With an eye towards rejuvenating their coaching staff, the Cavaliers are actively pursuing a range of candidates to fill the void left by Bickerstaff’s departure.
They are eyeing Kenny Atkinson and James Borrego. Both have significant coaching experience. Atkinson is currently serving as an assistant with the Golden State Warriors. He was head coach of the Brooklyn Nets from 2016 to 2020. Atkinson compiled a record of 118-190 and guided the team to one postseason appearance. Since then, he has honed his skills as an assistant with the LA Clippers and the Warriors.

Meanwhile, James Borrego, an assistant with the New Orleans Pelicans, is also in contention for the role. Borrego boasts prior head coaching experience with the Charlotte Hornets, where he spent four seasons at the helm. Under his leadership, the Hornets achieved a record of 148-183, culminating in the team’s first winning season in six years. Borrego’s proven track record of success makes him an attractive option for Cleveland as they seek to rebuild and compete in the Eastern Conference.
Additionally, the Cavaliers are considering Johnnie Bryant and Chris Quinn for the position, both of whom have distinguished themselves as assistants in the NBA. Bryant, currently serving as an assistant with the New York Knicks, began his coaching career under Quin Snyder with the Utah Jazz. After six years with the Jazz, Bryant transitioned to the Knicks, where he has served as associate head coach for the past four seasons. His wealth of experience and understanding of the game make him a compelling candidate for the Cavaliers.

Chris Quinn, an assistant coach under Erik Spoelstra with the Miami Heat, brings a unique perspective. Following a six-year NBA career, Quinn transitioned seamlessly into coaching, joining Spoelstra’s staff in 2014. His tenure with the Heat has seen the team achieve consistent success, thanks in part to Quinn’s contributions as an assistant coach. As the Cavaliers continue their search for a new head coach. The organization remains committed to finding the right fit to lead the team into a new era of competitiveness.
