Houston Survives in OT Over Texas A&M Advancing to the Sweet 16

On Sunday, March 24, Houston clashed with Texas A&M on the basketball court, each team vying for a spot in the Sweet 16. The matchup, predictably close given the intensity of their rivalry, echoed their previous encounter in December, where Houston eked out a four-point victory. This historical context set the stage for a fiercely contested battle. From the get-go, it was clear that neither team would easily yield.

Powered by an impressive offensive display, Houston quickly took the lead, a gap the Aggies struggled to narrow. A critical moment came with less than eight minutes left in the first half when Emmanuel Sharp hit a crucial three-pointer, extending Houston’s lead to seven points—the largest lead of the half. However, Texas A&M, with Radford leading the charge, briefly took the lead three minutes before halftime. Houston, demonstrating resilience, regained control to lead 43-38 at the break.

In the second half, L.J. Cryer stood out for Houston, scoring 14 points with a mix of layups, free throws, and three-pointers. As time dwindled, Texas A&M launched a fierce 13-3 run, capped by a dramatic buzzer-beater from Garcia, tying the game at 86. Sharp, with a career-high 30 points, played a crucial role in Houston’s sustained effort.

The game extended into overtime, where Sharp immediately made his mark with a three-pointer. Despite Sharp and Shead fouling out, Houston managed to keep up the pace and execute under pressure, ultimately securing a 100-95 win and advancing to the Sweet 16 for the fifth consecutive year. Looking forward, Houston is set to face Duke in Dallas, Texas, with their sights set on reaching the Elite Eight.
