Ivory Coast Clinches Victory in Thrilling African Cup of Nations Final

Nigeria and Ivory Coast certainly put on a captivating display in the African Cup of Nations final! Ivory Coast had a rough start in the group stage, losing to Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea. However, they rallied back to reach the finals without losing another game, managing to avenge their earlier loss in the process. Nigeria, on the other hand, had a flawless run until the final. With a talented squad, they were the fan favorites to take home the trophy.  

The game saw Nigeria’s Super Eagles take an early lead with William Troost-Ekong’s spectacular header in the 37th minute. However, despite this initial advantage, Ivory Coast’s Elephants dominated possession for much of the first half and maintained their aggressive play in the second.

Nigeria struggled to maintain possession, facing challenges throughout the game and ultimately succumbing to Ivory Coast’s relentless pressure. The momentum shifted in the 60th minute when the Elephants scored a header through Franck Kessie, leveling the score. Then, in the 80th minute, Sebastien Haller secured victory for Cote d’Ivoire with a decisive tap-in. 

Ivory Coast emerged as the dominant force in this match, recording18 shots with eight on target. Meanwhile, the Super Eagles managed only five shots in total, with just one on target. Ivory Coast also controlled possession for 62% of the game, further solidifying their exceptional performance. People throughout Cote d’Ivoire will celebrate this win for a long time!

Both teams are set to resume play in the upcoming summer World Cup qualifiers, each with the goal of securing a spot in the 2026 World Cup.
