Michigan State Has Their Man!

Jonathan Smith, fresh off wrapping up an 8-4 regular season with the Beavers to conclude a successful three-year stretch, is set to leave Oregon State. Taking over in 2018, he successfully rebuilt the Pac-12 squad. Despite their lone season together, DJ Uiagalelei, the previous starting quarterback for the Clemson Tigers, has been under Smith’s tutelage. The duo’s future together is uncertain, and whether Uiagalelei remains in town is yet to be determined. Nevertheless, their singular season was a success.

Smith, over six seasons at Oregon State, holds a commendable record of 34-35. The record is highlighted by the remarkable 10-3 season in 2022 that culminated in a triumphant victory at the prestigious Las Vegas Bowl. However, his success hasn’t shielded him from coaching speculation, particularly after Oregon State’s loss to Oregon. Rumors linked him to the vacant coaching position at Michigan State.

In response to inquiries about potential interviews, Coach Smith maintained a measured stance, stating, “No decisions have been made. I’ve urged the team to maintain a locked-in approach for four months, especially given the uncertainty surrounding the Pac-12. I’ve adopted the same mindset, and we’ll proceed from there.”

Emphasizing the need to stay focused amidst external chatter, Smith reiterated his guidance to the team about distractions. “Throughout the year, we’ve addressed external noise, discussing recent rumors with the team just a few days ago and emphasizing the need to stay focused,” he explained.

When pressed about recent interactions with Athletic Director Scott Barnes, Smith acknowledged their regular meetings but chose not to delve into specifics. “Scott and the administration have been proactive in navigating unprecedented challenges. We’ve had weekly discussions not only about football but also regarding the overall approach to athletics, scheduling, and more,” Smith commented, shedding light on the broader scope of their ongoing collaboration in steering the program through uncharted waters.
